The Yankees are in agreement to bring right-hander Nick Goody back to the organization on a minor league contract, reports Conor Foley of the Scranton Times-Tribune (Twitter link). He’ll head back to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre for the time being.
Goody, 30, opened the season with the Yankees on a minor league deal and pitched quite well for their top affiliate in Scranton, logging 22 innings of 2.86 ERA ball with a massive 36.5 percent strikeout rate against just an 8.2 percent walk rate. Goody exercised an early July opt-out clause in that deal, however, and the Yankees elected to let him become a free agent rather than add him to the MLB roster at the time. He went on to sign with the Nationals but didn’t fare as well with their Triple-A club in Rochester; in 14 innings there, Goody yielded eight runs on 13 hits and seven walks with 13 strikeouts (5.40 ERA).
Originally a sixth-round pick by the Yankees back in 2012, Goody made his big league debut with them back in 2015. He was traded to the Indians in a 2016 deal that netted minor league reliever Yoiber Marquina, and he went on to enjoy a solid three-year run in Cleveland from 2017-19: 107 innings, 3.53 ERA, 29.6 percent strikeout rate, 10.4 percent walk rate. After going to the Rangers via waivers in the 2019-20 offseason, Goody was hit hard in the 2020 season, yielding 11 runs on 14 hits and eight walks with 13 punchouts through 11 innings.
Now back with the Yankees, Goody will provide some depth to a bullpen that has a different composition than when he left the organization. In the six weeks since that time, the Yankees have lost Darren O’Day to a season-ending hamstring injury; traded Luis Cessa and Justin Wilson; and acquired both Clay Holmes and Joely Rodriguez in separate deals. They’re also currently without closer Aroldis Chapman, who has been on the injured list since Aug. 7 owing to elbow inflammation.

Goody, goody

Diggin’ Through the Trash, Cash.
I like what Cashman has been doing. All of his deadline adds were essentially an admission of former mistakes one way or another.
& now he’s churning guys around on the 40 man.
This is completely Brian Cashman’s team.
& he’ll get this one into the postseason, too.
Bet.
& Goody was pretty…decent with Cleveland.
So: decent move.
RobM
Always liked him when he was originally coming up through the Yankees system. I feel like that was a couple years ago, but it was five or six. The Yankees always have interesting arms at the ready for the pen, although my guess here is he’s more minor league depth in case something goes wrong down the stretch.
gruber63
With the A’s going down Yankees are tied with them atop the AL WC standings.
Ducky Buckin Fent
3 way.
Ummm…tie. With Boston too.
gruber63
Technically Boston is .001 below.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Well…that makes it .001 better then.
Yankee Clipper
Goody was a prior Yankee farmhand and performed okay before. This could be a really good get for them, given their BP situation.

Ducky, correct me if you think I’m wrong here, when Rizzo comes backs -hopefully tomorrow-Stanton in left, Voit at DH until the Yanks have the lead late then inset Gardy or Davis in center, Gallo moves to left & Judge to right. Win, Win!

Oh goody

Wish I knew.
I like:
Judge LF
Gallo CF
Stanton RF
Voit DH
Rizzo 1B
Screw it. Let’s just try to bludgeon & bullpen + Cole our way to a pennant.
RobM
Has Judge ever played LF? He’s a very good OF, so it wouldn’t be an issue. I’d let Stanton play the shorter RF, but they seem reluctant to put Gallo in center. That means Judge in center if they want to go for the Death Star hitting lineup. Hopefully they do it for at least four games a week.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Not much from what I recall.
Look.
I haven’t been to the “new” ballpark yet. But in the old Yankee Stadium, a LF with range was fairly important. *If* it’s still similar (which it looks like on my TV) I definitely prefer Judge in left. Stanton is actually a decent defensive outfielder. But Judge is an excellent one.
As is Gallo.
It appears we are all thinking the same thing. Namely, how to get all these guys into the lineup at the same time.
I get it: they’ll hit.
Other aspects of the game will probably be rugged.
Not sure what else we can really do.
Play to your strengths. Ya know?
RobM
Just going by comfort level, Stanton in right, Judge in center and Gallo in left makes sense. Cashman likes a strong defender in left because it’s the large field. That’s why Gardner has played most of his career out there. Second CFer. Judge can handle it (meaning center) but I do wonder if they’re concerned about all the extra running in center on someone his size. Davis can’t hit, but he can field. He basically saved the game the other night on the ball Adell hit. So, yeah, I don’t know what they’re going to do!
gruber63
I like Stanton RF, Judge CF & Gallo LF too. Yup Stanton was decent with Miami. Judge was a CF at Fresno St.
Yankee Clipper
Ducky, I’ve been incredibly impressed with the job Matt Blake has done to get these pitchers on track. With 3/5 of the starting pitchers out, his team managed the filling SP well. Bullpen is another story and nobody’s fault but the pitchers. Tallion is looking like a true #2 in several outings and IF we can get Kluber back the SP for all playoff games is set.
Cortez is another story as well and really stepped up to everyone’s amazement. I agree with Judge RF, Stanton LF, and Gallo CF. Judge played an adequate CF but I think Gallo’s peripherals reflect he’s a bit more mobile, thus covering more area. I believe his sprint speed is above Judge’s as well.
pjc1966
Yankee Stadium 3 has identical dimensions to Yankee Stadium 2 when it closed. I’d also prefer Judge in left, but they seem reluctant to do that. Perhaps Judge has stated he’s uncomfortable playing left or there is some reason we don’t know about. They seem to have no qualms about him playing center.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Hate to say it, @pjc. But I wouldn’t doubt that the location of the “Judge’s Chambers” plays into it somehow.
I couldn’t understand the reticence to move him to left after we initially acquired Stanton. Although a solid defender, Giancarlo is nowhere near the defensive player that Judge is. Give him the easier assignment on the grass. & Gallo lined up in CF plenty of times down in Texas.
Gothamcityriddler
That’s close enough, works for me pal!

They need to keep that RP Stephen Ridings up with the bigs
mlbnyyfan
Definitely agree all with the lineup that has Stanton in LF, Gallo in CF, Judge in RF.
Ideal Lineup even though they may strike out too much when everyone is healthy could be scary
DJ
Rizzo
Judge
Gallo
Stanton
Voit DH
Sanchez
Torres

I think I bat Gio leadoff.
At least until DJ shows he remembers how to hit.
mlbnyyfan
Good idea. I still wish they had a legitimate lead off hitter with speed
64' Yanks
What a mistake. He had a 9.00 ERA, This year the pitching short Washington Nationals release him after one month….another reason why the fans call Cashman Trashman. Sorry Goody is toast.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Call him whatever you want but I’ll take winning ballgames. Nats are retooling so it serves them to use higher-ceiling, young arms.
mlbnyyfan
All teams this time of year taking a chance on any healthy available arm. The Dodgers have been trying to find guys too. If Goody helps the Yankees win a handful of games it’s worth it. I’m still not sure about the Heaney acquisition but if he wins tonight definitely changes my opinion of him a lil bit.
YankeesBleacherCreature
I don’t expect much from Heaney as he’s a stopgap for Kluber and Sevy. I do expect him to stay on the roster as insurance for those two.
mlbnyyfan
Unfortunately I don’t think Sevy or Kluber coming back this season especially Sevy.
