On their way to back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since 2010-2011, the Nationals have for the first time in a long time turned their attention to the future. If they are able to successfully pull of a “retool” — thereby avoiding the dreaded “rebuild” — it will likely be fueled by the rapid development of a stable of young players that includes Victor Robles, Luis Garcia, Carter Kieboom, Keibert Ruiz, Cade Cavalli and Josiah Gray.
In trading away veterans at the deadline, the Nationals targeted more advanced prospects like Ruiz and Gray for the express purpose of keying a quick turnaround. That’s because Juan Soto remains on the roster, and if they plan on signing the all-world outfielder to a contract extension, the Nats will want to avoid a drawn-out rebuild. Soto is under team control for three seasons beyond this one, and as a Scott Boras client, he’s unlikely to sign long-term.
Soto said as much recently, per Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post. When asked about the possibility of extending, Soto said, “I’m going to try to take it year by year. I’m just going to keep playing baseball, not think about contracts or whatever … right now, I was a little frustrated, but I have to concentrate on the field, on how to be better for myself and my teammates. If they want to talk to my agent, they can talk to him. But let me play.”
The Nationals are better equipped than many clubs to handle the uncertainty of Soto’s long-term future because of their relationship with Boras. They’ve gone down this road before with Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon, and Stephen Strasburg. And while one view might notice that two of those three players left for other organizations, it’s also important to note that the team did bring Strasburg back on a monster $245MM deal. Besides, with Scherzer’s contract off the books and a Trea Turner extension no longer something they need to worry about, the Nats have long-term money to spend.
They’ll still need to convince Soto that Washington is where he wants to be. To that end, they should have a leg up on the competition. He has, after all, already won a World Series in DC, and with the Nats’ history of spending and pushing for competitive ball clubs, one would think Soto could envision an enviable long-term future.
On the Nats’ side, there’s the lingering question of how aggressively the Nats will work to make Soto a lifelong National. The Nats tend to put their money behind pitching — hence the long-term deals for Strasburg, Scherzer, and Patrick Corbin, while Harper, Rendon, and Turner have all been shown the door.
Soto, however, might be a generational player even beyond that star-studded threesome. On the one hand, there are few players in the game as talented as Harper, Rendon, and Turner. But on the other hand, Soto might just be one of those guys, and his youth makes him all the more likely to garner a “lifetime” contract like those mega deals signed by Manny Machado, Mookie Betts, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Harper himself.
What might be worrying for Nats’ fans is that Harper’s a pretty darn good career comp for Soto, and while they made an earnest effort to re-sign Harper, they were ultimately okay with letting him walk.
At the very least, Nats apologists can point to Strasburg and Ryan Zimmerman as two players they were intent on keeping – and did. From a personality standpoint, Soto’s understated confidence and humility might fall more in line with Strasburg and Zim than the more vivacious Harper.
If Washington feels about Soto the way they have about Stras and Zim, he should be a National for life. Regardless, it doesn’t look like we’ll know for sure until the winter following the 2024 season.
DarkSide830
oh, this could be interesting
BrewersMVP08
Don’t blame him one bit.
DM_Nats
Are people actually surprised by this? Nats could offer him the Tatis contract tmrw and his jackass agent would tell him to wait until FA. I’m really not concerned with this one, Nats have a boat load of cash available especially when Corbins off the books. His FA will time well with all our top prospects entering the bigs and the next championship window set to begin.
RunDMC
Next championship window…? Right now, I don’t know if it’s a window – maybe a porthole on a sinking ship.
Chief Two Hands
Fredo was weak and stupid, he never should have boarded that ship!
believeitornot
It was more like a canoe.
IBackTheNats6
They have a bunch of major league ready prospects, the window could absolutely be open starting next year depending on FA
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
I like the year by year idea, some of us less fortunate have to go day by day.
WtfMate
Bang bang
DM_Nats
I would expect a down year next year, 23 to be around .500 and then 24 to be competitive again. Cavalli is the real deal. Gray looks like a solid 2 or 3. Garcia, Ruiz, Soto are a solid core to start with and hopefully Kieboom and / or House can pan out. Add in a couple FA’s with all the money coming off the books and I don’t see any reason why we can’t be there again competing for the East.
bucsfan0004
Give him the Tatis deal, if he doesn’t want it…. show him the door
gmenfan
Yes, please do. But don’t mind the rest of the league lining up to sign him though.
hiflew
I am not personally a fan of a massive rebuild, but they have made that choice. When you are rebuilding to the point the Nats are, you have no need to keep around anyone that doesn’t want to commit long term. He’ll be traded this offseason, because his value is never likely to be higher. I would imagine it will take several top prospects. And not team top prospects, I’m talking league top prospects.
Detroit is looking to make a splash this offseason, could they part with a Torkelson-led package for him?
BlooBengal
It would probably cost Torkelson, Greene, Skubal or Manning, one or both of the pitchers we just drafted, plus a few lower level prospects. I’m willing to roll the dice and go with what we have. Spend money on a shortstop and another pitcher not named Verlander.
DarkSide830
hot take: a Soto deal starts with Mize
hiflew
Possibly. I would imagine either Mize or Torkelson, but probably not both. Then one of Greene, Skubal, Manning. Or perhaps Detroit says pick two of the five if Washington balks..
Then add someone like Daz Cameron who is close to the bigs and can take Soto’s spot immediately, and then a high upside young guy like 17 year old Bastidas and maybe one more young lotto ticket.
4 top 30 prospects will be expensive, but not crippling.
BlooBengal
Probably, but if your taking Mize over Skubal, then I would think your getting Dingler instead of Torkelson. Either way, I’d rather see these guys come up while having a more flexible payroll over the next six years other than put it all in one basket and have Avila piecemeal around Soto.
hiflew
I understand your feelings there, but it comes with risks. None of the prospects is guaranteed to be even half the player Juan Soto is. Great prospects fail at the big league level all the time. It’s a gamble either way. And if none of the prospects step forward toward stardom, I doubt the payroll will be going up much.
But with Soto, I guarantee it would. And you would keep 2-3 of your top 5. If you kept the right ones, then you could have a special team formed. If you don’t keep the right ones, then it is a big problem.
To me, that risk is what makes these types of deals fun. Of course it isn’t my job on the line, so I understand GMs maybe not taking that route.
stan lee the manly
The CBA is going to completely change the way prospects are paid, so no sense in forecasting team payrolls until that gets done
1984wasntamanual
Wait, why is it guaranteed that payroll would go up with Soto, but not with them going with what they have?
hiflew
I doubt it costs THAT much. I am thinking probably something along the lines of the Chris Sale package with the #1 overall prospect Moncada along with one other great prospect, one mid range prospect, and one low level. It might take a little more, but any more and Washington would price themselves out of the market.
It’s not about what anyone thinks Soto is worth, it is about what people are willing to pay. They don’t HAVE to sell Soto, but if they want to sell him they are probably going to have to sell him for less than he is thought to be worth.
dshires4
I think you have that backwards. They don’t have to sell him, so why settle for less? They won’t accept anything more than a monster of an overpay. Which is justified.
hiflew
I think I am going to stick with my original take. They don’t have to sell him, but if they want to the market can’t afford to overpay for him. The choices will be to keep him or to sell him for what the market is willing to pay.
Of course there is always the Padres who could be willing to give up their two top 10 prospects. I guess if they acquired an entire All Star team, there is a chance they could get out of 3rd place.
believeitornot
I know the Tigers are much better now but Soto is a free agent after 24. Will the Tigers give up so much for maybe two years of Soto?
hiflew
Um this is 2021, so getting him this offseason would mean 3 years of Soto, not 2.
believeitornot
I doubt very much they will trade him this off season.
DarkSide830
he’s probably the 2nd most valuable player in baseball when you factor in contracts. he’s worth well more than any team can part with.
Armaments216
In what way have the Nationals shown they’ve decided to undertake a massive rebuild? There’s only one year of remaining team control (Trea Turner) among all the players they just traded. And there will be plenty of veteran SS talent available this offseason should they want to go that route. They got a boatload of talent at the trade deadline in return for more or less being in the same offseason position they’d have been in anyway.
VonPurpleHayes
@Armaments Nailed it. The only trade I was surprised by was Turner, but even he only has 1 more year of control. Rizzo is a win-now GM. He gave up players he knew he wasn’t resigning. The Nats will be buying again soon.
hiflew
You might be right, but it is really all about appearances. Right now, other than the Cubs, no team looked more like rebuilders than the Nats. They could easily change that perception this off season, but we’ll have to wait and see.
iverbure
I’ll guarantee Soto will not be traded this offseason just like no other generational talent with 3 years control is ever traded either.
hiflew
I’ll guarantee nothing other than you don’t possess the ability to guarantee Juan Soto doesn’t get traded. The only person that could possibly guarantee that is the Nats owner.
And I don’t know if I would call Soto a “generational” talent. He is a great player, but generational is a bit of a stretch for him.
MikeD26
If Soto is not , who is? Lol
1984wasntamanual
Soto is not. Someone who is? Mike Trout. Lol.
Appalachian_Outlaw
I always feel as if it’s hard to debate the “generational” talent label with other fans when talking about players. It really depends on how the individual defines it. Are we talking the type of talent the sport sees once or twice a generation, or the type of talent a team might be able to draft once a generation? I’ll give Iver that one if only because I don’t know how it’s being defined.
I wouldn’t guarantee Soto doesn’t go anywhere though. He made a somewhat veiled- but very clear- statement with this that he is not onboard for an extended rebuild. I’d say the Nats are going to have to honestly ask themselves where their rebuild/retool is at the end of next season, and if it’s not where they could see themselves quick winners, he may go. Depends how willing he is to sign a new deal.
scottn59c
He said the right things to avoid discord but still intimate that he wants to play for a winning club. The Nats have plenty of time to move him for a great haul if they choose to at various junctures in the future.
natsgm
This isnt a surprise and is pretty much a nothing bomb. Fans freaking out that the Nats will be terrible forever now are just plain dumb.
Joe It All
He’s still there for 3 more years and a lot will change between now and then. I would think he’s rattled from seeing a lot of his top teammates get dealt last week so asking him about a long term extension right now isn’t the ideal time to bring it up. When it comes time to sign the dotted line, I think he stays put in D.C.
LordD99
Mike Trout should have taken this route.
BrewersMVP08
It’s awful for the league that he’s on LA. Ohtani and Trout won’t see a playoff series until they leave. Damn shame too would love to see both hitting bombs in a WS.
hiflew
It’s not awful for the league, the league is just fine. It might be awful for Mike Trout fans or Ohtani fans, but the league will survive fine if both retired tomorrow. As Trout fans like to say whenever you criticize Trout’s team always losing, one man cannot make a winning team. Well, one man does not support the league either. Every postseason has its heroes that step up and fill the void of a missing superstar. Look at Randy Arozarena last year.. The league did not miss Trout.
DarkSide830
yep. baseball stardom is very spread out, rather then localized to one or two players like some sports.
YankeesBleacherCreature
…If he prioritized money and allowed it to dictate the team he plays for. I think Trout did alright in the money department without having the same concerns as Soto does now.
believeitornot
Love that the Angels lose. They deserve to. After all, they signed Pujols to a ten year deal when he is two years older than he says he is. Also, their name is so stupid. There is nothing L.A. about this team. They don’t play in the city of L.A. or the county.
angelsfan4life
@believeitornot, you do realize that the Angels started in LA right? They also play in the Los Angeles media market. You do realize that right? I would rather them go back to being called the California Angels. But I understand the name change. Just the Jets and Giants play in New Jersey. But no one calls the the New Jersey Jets or Giants. The Washington Football Team, you want to talk about a dumb name. Don’t even play in DC or Virginia. They play in Maryland. So for you and everyone else caught up on a name, get TF over it. They have been the Los Angeles Angels since 2004.
1984wasntamanual
So that’s a very long way of saying that what he said was correct. Got it.
believeitornot
Not one of the teams you mentioned has the names of two cities in their name. Make a better argument next time. I hope you are not going to law school.
30 Parks
Trading Turner is a mistake.
believeitornot
They didn’t think they could sign him for the 200 plus million he will want so they traded him. Better to trade a player one year too soon than a year too late. A year too late would have been next year.
Longtimecoming
Is the Scherzer contract really “off the books”? I seem to recall a boatload of deferred money like the Bobby Bonilla deal for like 5 years or so?
YankeesBleacherCreature
No. It’ll still count towards annual payroll as long as they keep paying him. Bobby Bo’s deal was 25-year deferred money deal.
believeitornot
The deferred payments end in 2028.
Baseball 1600
It’s shocking to me that he only has 3 more years of control. He’d be the most in-demand FA ever if he keeps this up
AMATO
To be honest I feel a few of those trades vets (Scherzer, Gomes, Hudson) will resign w the nats once the WS is done
I think it’s a Rizzo add long term pieces to sacrifice this year and retool and reconquer next
brian214
Like some are commenting, it may very well take a Tatis-like deal for Soto to sign long term. I wonder if stuff like this phases Acuna. Sure, he’s got wealth beyond his wildest dreams, but he sure did sell himself short with that extension.
YankeesBleacherCreature
You move past it. Concerning yourself with things no longer in your control does nothing.. The most he can ask for is an extension every year to re-work his current contract.
fox471 Dave
Hey folks. Really enjoyed the discussion today. No name calling or arguing, just in the know fans giving and taking opinions. Well done!
believeitornot
I think I changed that.
NatsFaninMD
Anybody who has followed the Nats knows what will likely happen. Boras won’t let him sign until January or February of 2025, the Lerners will make an offer that is mostly deferred payments and he will ride off into the sunset to make some other team a success. The Nats are like a farm team – developing players for other clubs.
Unless Soto does what Strasburg did – tell the agent he ants to stay here and to make it happen – he will be gone after 2024.
Armaments216
Nationals have definitely let a few players ride off into the sunset for their big paydays: Jordan Zimmermann, Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon. The “make some other team a success” part of your assertion hasn’t really materialized yet though.
ilikebaseball 2
“Besides, with Scherzer’s contract off the books” They mean for a luxury tax purposes????
gcg27
scherzer is on the books for the next decade plus.. 0 mill a year deferred for next decade plus is crazy stupid
gcg27
Meant 10 mill a year deferred
Rsox
The death knell ringing loud and clear in Washington. The Nats were fortunate to be able to replace Harper with Soto, it’s unlikely they get that lucky again. Soto going year to year means he’s as good as gone after the ’24 season
Yankee Clipper
NY welcomes you!
angt222
Nats should never have given that contract to Strasburg. That $245M could have gone to Soto.
believeitornot
Don’t know if he would have taken the deferred money.
