Rhys Hoskins was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier today. Unfortunately, the news has only gotten more dire since then. Speaking to reporters, Hoskins said that he will not play again this season, per Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer (via Twitter). He will undergo surgery to repair a tear in his lower abdomen, adds MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki (via Twitter).
Interestingly, the earlier designation for his IL placement was for a groin injury. The abdomen issue was a preexisting injury that Hoskins has been dealing with for some time now. The two injuries in tandem, however, seemed to push the point for Hoskins, leading to the decision to have the surgery now. It’s an unequivocal bummer for Hoskins, who had put together a bounce-back season after a difficult 2020.
Big picture, this is a crushing revelation for the Phillies. They have very little margin for error as they strive to make the postseason for the first time in the Bryce Harper era. It’s been a tough month of August for the Phillies, who were leapfrogged by the Braves for first place in the NL East. Girardi’s club now sits 5.0 games out of first and 5.5 games out of a wild card spot.
All this comes amidst a front office shakeup and the demotion of Alec Bohm, their top prospect and starting third baseman for much of the year. Add in the yo-yo treatment of Spencer Howard’s development before he was dealt to Texas, as well as their wild swings in the standings since the trade deadline, and it all adds up to a rather disjointed situation in Philly, at least in terms of the optics.
Remember, they were 3.5 games behind the Mets at the trade deadline only to go on an 8-game win streak to begin August. They swiftly overtook the Mets for the division lead on August 6th. Their time at the top was short-lived, as they’ve gone just 6-10 in the games since, losing the top spot to surging Atlanta. Less than two weeks after they lost the division lead to the Braves, they sit just barely on the fringes of contention with a 17.6% chance of making the playoffs, per baseball-reference.
Losing Hoskins now adds insult to injury, especially because they’re roster is so thin after the superstars at the top. Hoskins’ 129 wRC+ and 2.4 fWAR were a key piece of scaffolding to the Harper-J.T. Realmuto core. Swapping in Brad Miller’s 93 wRC+ simply doesn’t make up enough ground for a team looking to make up ground. Miller’s going to be the guy, however, because there’s not much else in the organization by way of reinforcements — not unless Bohm can very quickly figure things out in Triple-A.

This team wasn’t going anywhere this year with or without him. Phillies will finish under .500 again.
brucebochyisthemarlboroman
Bet they finish over .500 and higher than the Mets
802Ghost
Wow, wait to shoot low.

DarkSide830
the way this team has played without Rhys? yeah, that would be impressive. the first part at least.
Bart Harley Jarvis
I liked it better with “wait”. Stick with the original.
TheLawAbides
Second in the division sounds better?
R.D.
Mets have reinforcements coming at least. This is a huge blow.
MasterShake
Reinforcing that 3rd place finish?
DarkSide830
they’ve been saying that all year…
phenomenalajs
For the Phillies, correct. Unfortunately, it may be too late to catch the Braves. To even get close, they would have to do what they failed to do earlier and run through Marlins and Nats like a hot knife through butter. The strength of the upcoming schedules between the Mets and Braves flips going forward.
Cosmo2
Reinforcements? Can deGrom bat cleanup? I’m not too confident in no slider Thor.
rct
Not saying much there, buddy.
bucketbrew35
You clearly undervalue his importance to the team as a whole. This dude is the glue.
stevetampa
Phillies stink. The roster was exceptionally flawed since day 1. Only silver lining is the legit starting 5 going into next season. Offense is a mess. Defense stinks. Bullpen stinks. And they have a bottom 5 minor league system. Someone should slap McPhail. He’s lazy -and unmotivated. Horrible hire. Klentak was overmatched from day 1. And here we are.
brucebochyisthemarlboroman
Ughhhhhh. This might be the death knell.
DarkSide830
aaaaaaahhhhhhhh
Weasel 2
Not a Phils fan. Just saying as a baseball fan I hope he gets healthy. He’s one of the unsung group of “really good, but not superstar” players who are kind of the glue of winning teams.
Plus the Phils are pretty much out of it at this point. So he shouldn’t feel guilty about it. Heck he was playing with it all year. He deserves some recognition for that (as a CA native I never heard that he was nursing an ab injury all season)
Audrey
Having the DH in the NL next year would definitely help his cause. He’s been injured late in the past two seasons and I think if they took him off the field (which he doesn’t really excel at anyway) he wouldn’t re-aggravate this injury time and time again.
tstats
The Phillies have too many DHs in Cutch (unless his contract is up, I forget) Rhys and Bohm the way he played this year…
MetsFan22
Cry me a river. The Mets lost their whole team.
bestno5
Looks like you are started filling that river

Remember when the Mets plane crashed and the whole team died? They had to get Matthew McConaughey to coach the team. It was horrible!

I assume you’re meaning anyone good, Metsfan22. So, for the record, you’re saying Pete Alonso stinks? He hasn’t been hurt, and that’s sure what it sounds like you’re saying.
SalaryCapMyth
Oh look who decided to pop his head up. Anyone think MetsFan22 will be back at all to respond to anything or will be just post the random statement to “prove” that he is still around despite all the predictions he made about the Mets being a lock for the division? =))
rct
Stop responding to him. Seriously. Dude is a troll fishing for reactions and everyone gives them to him every time.
tstats
Cause we have fun responding, that’s why
SalaryCapMyth
A troll is someone who makes statements for reactions. Metsfan22 actually believes what he is saying. I love that everyone responds to him and if the Mets actually don’t make the playoffs, he will be hounded by everyone for however much longer he posts as Metsfan22.
VonPurpleHayes
You’re really the only one crying about injuries all year.
Weasel 2
I remember Von Hayes. He wasn’t horrible. He just never quite made to the star level. Just a really good player who got miscast as a star.
He had 4-5 season of 4.0-5.0 war. That’s actually an above average career.
VonPurpleHayes
Yup Von was solid, even producing some MVP seasons. Expectations were unfairly high because the Phils traded 5 players for him.
sfes
I worked with a guy in Jersey who was from Philly. He had a band called Von Hayes. Of course he was a Phils fan. VH was a real fan favorite
mazerrackham
I have 19 Von Hayes rookie cards because he was going to be the next Ted Williams. Still an all-time favorite of mine.
JoeBrady
I traded 50 Von Hayes rookies for 4 Eddie Murray rookies in maybe early-81. The skel with the Murrays never delivered. That one hurt.
Weasel 2
Whoa!
Me: sympathy for hoskins
You: screw everyone the Mets are bad
Just trolling a little before dinner I hope?
sfes
Dude please for the love of Edgardo Alfonzo quit it! You’re making our fan base look like the lolmets meme.
fried-man
There goes the Phillies’ playoff hopes, oh wait…
sergefunction
A low blow.
VonPurpleHayes
And so are the Phillies. Lineup is horrendous without him in it. Harper just gets walked all the time without protection.
jury_rigger
Not sure how it’s crushing. They’re a garbage team either way.
VonPurpleHayes
They win games win he hits. Their recent slump was in no small due to him being missing. But that points to a depth problem which the Phillies have. Mets and Phillies never deserved a playoff spot.
Eatdust666
Because he was their 2nd best hitter at the time of the injury, despite the fact that he would get criticized by the stupid batting average worshippers.
TheLawAbides
I think it would be fair to say Hoskins might’ve had a down year this year due to his low obp but his ops is still great, he has been crushing homers and double all season
This hurts the Phillies looking at the lineup with no Hoskins the only player with ops over .800 is Harper
DadsInDaniaBeach
Hos came back and tried to play..in the 3 games he participated in he hit 3 home runs..he was in the midst of a very good year..No reason to pitch to Harper
whosehighpitch
He hit last night and they lost. Should’ve traded him for pitching in July.
VonPurpleHayes
The Phillies pitching has been solid of late. Their offense has been horrendous. Finally get a good rotation, and they can’t hit. Sadly, there are too many problems with this team.
Captain Dunsel
The Phillies will really miss the old waiver trading deadline now. Might have gotten something for a few people.
SalaryCapMyth
This really sucks for Phillies fans.
The Phillies already have a bad -27 R.diff and rank 16th in runs scored. They can’t afford this loss. They need someone..a couple someones to step up. Maybe Gregorious could turn it around and do what he’s done before or perhaps Bohm could choose now to live up to his potential.
I suppose their pitching staff could find another level and do it that way but if the Phillies don’t find another source for runs or a few arms that decide they can prevent more runs, this team won’t go anywhere. This is the final straw.
It almost feels like the division is being given to the Braves which is almost as bad as not winning it unless they at least win a pennant and this year’s iteration of the Braves I struggle to see doing that. We’ll see. I at least have a baseball fans hope where any team could win a world series if they make the playoffs. I just wouldnt expect them to get far.
letsplaytwo
You don’t “choose” to live up to your potential and you don’t decide to “prevent more runs”.
You focus and try to execute and often it’s just not enough or it’s not quite their time.
SalaryCapMyth
Do you really think I was saying you choose this or you decide that? I was just writing expressively.
the kutch
“Disjointed “ might be the nicest thing anyone could say about the Phillies 2021 season….
ShootyBabbit
Phils should deal for Albert Pujols. According to Dodger fans, he’s crushing it right now
jonbluvin
He has a 954 OPS against left handed pitchers and actually has a positive WAR for the Dodgers. He is doing more than expected. I wouldn’t call it crushing, but he is doing decently for a part time platoon/pinch hitter.
tstats
And has an undeniable affect on the rest of the team making them better in an intangible way much like Betts last year
BeforeMcCourt
Against lefties Pujols is pretty damn decent
htbnm57
Stick a fork in them, the Phillies are done… they’ve been done for a while. There is no hope this team will be anything better than mediocre.
VonPurpleHayes
They are destined to be Phorever Phive Hundred. Win 8 in a row? Okay here comes the losing streak. Easy schedule coming up? Okay key injuries incoming.
mwrherm0
So what happens here, surgery? Does he have a sports hernia or pulled groin?
VonPurpleHayes
Unrelated to the groin. Abdominal tear. Surgery.
Jean Matrac
Not a Phillies fan, but if I were, I wouldn’t be throwing in the towel just yet. Yeah, losing Hoskins is a big blow, but on the other hand, it’s not like the Braves roster doesn’t have it’s flaws. They’ve surged into first on the heels of a fantastic run, but how sustainable is that level of play?
Plus, the Braves have a tougher schedule left than the Phils. If the Phillies can make up some ground in the 9 games the Braves have with the Giants and Dodgers, then they still have 3 games head to head. I’d still bet the Braves if I were forced to choose, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Braves fade somewhat, giving the Phillies a chance.
JoeBrady
I don’t think they have a shot, but it should be noted that the Braves 9-game winning streak was against Washington, Miami and Baltimore.
TmanTheGoat
If the phillies can’t even beat the Diamondbacks, what makes you think they even have a remote chance to compete? Reminder, before that 9 streak, the braves came off beating the Reds and earlier the cardinals. The braves are not the mets, so don’t expect them falter like the mets did against the dodgers and giants.
Orel Saxhiser
The Braves have a tougher schedule but are a tough team themselves with a better roster than the Phillies or Mets. The Mets lost four of seven to the Pirates and three of four to the Marlins. If not for that, the 2-11 stretch against the Dodgers and Giants wouldn’t be as crippling as it looks.
A problem for the Phillies is Nola’s struggles and, now, Wheeler’s. In his three starts since tossing a one-hit gem, against the Mets, Wheeler has allowed 15 ER in 20.2 innings with the Phils losing all three games. Meanwhile, the Braves are getting SPs back from the IL. A couple of the Braves’ starters will move to the bullpen in October. They will be a more difficult out than many people think.
imissjoebuzas
I wish the Phillies would select TJ Rivera. He has always done well against the Nationals, Braves and Brewers and ( the Phillies, though not at Citizens Bank field necessarily). He is somewhat versatile, can certainly move between first and third, and can put the bat on the ball ( not much power, but a gaps hitter). He’s carrying a .909 OPS at Lehigh Valley right now. He has certaibly played well enough to earn that chance.
kreckert
And so ends the 2021 season.
Truth is this is a pretty bad team that occasionally has a REALLY good week. Being in the worst division in the sport is the only thing that kept them in the playoff conversation this long.
DarkSide830
its a mediocre team that sometimes goes on runs. .500 is and always be mediocre.
tstats
It’s hard to call NLE the worst division when the ALC is pretty bad too
Dannyocean
The Phillies are going to waste Harper’s best years fielding a poor roster with him or after a few more years of this he is going to want to be traded. Then they’ll be back to that “rebuild” mode but the farm system will be bare because they draft so poorly.
Phillls
I wonder if Angels fans whine about wasting Trout’s best years, and he is going to pout and want to be traded?
njbirdsfan
Say what you will about the Mets, but at least their own fans like the team, as opposed to the Phils, whose “fans” are just killing time until concussion ball season starts.
VonPurpleHayes
Yes because when you turn at 660 you don’t hear fans bashing Lindor and McNeil 24-7. The idea that people think fan bases somehow have different personalities is ridiculous. I live in NY. You hear the same things coming out of the Phillies fan base right now: misery and disappointment.
Orel Saxhiser
Check out Metsmerized or Amazin’ Avenue during a Mets game. Lots of talk from fans about this being their least-favorite Mets team. The negativity has been season-long.

Lots of talk from fans about this being their least-favorite Mets team.
===================================
It’s probably the high expectations. There are probably a lot of RS fans having a good time, even though that is against their nature, because very little was expected.
Some of the unnamed NYM fans weren’t even sure why we needed to actually play any regular season games.
Bob333
Mets fans always think they are going to win the WS everytime they sign a FA or even waiver pick ups they dumpster dive.Your owner picks up where the old one
left off your front office is loaded with sexual harassers and your Mgrs usually are horrible. So your team sucks this year get over it and maybe better luck next year though I doubt it.
Bob333
This team makes me sick .They should have unloaded all these no hearted MF’ers at the trade deadline. The front office make over may help 2 or 3 yrs from now.You still need to find
a Mgr if Girardi comes back that is another lost season of what if’s.Since when did Hoskins become the season life saver. He is having a good season but we have seen this act before
should have traded him while hot.Nola needs to go he is a #3 at best and poor Zach Wheeler will be begging to get out.The Diamondbacks are going to be home watching the playoffs with hope of improving next year and the Phillies will be no different but be stuck with heartless players like Realmuto and Harper.I hope this team finishes last the deserve it.
TheLawAbides
Way overreacting. Nola “at his best” is a 2.3 ERA pitcher with sup .200 baa and sub 1 whip and granted I don’t think he is a #1 anymore Wheeler definitely is, Harper is playing his — off seriously go look up his seasons 146 ops+ since joining the Phillies. To call anyone on the Phillies a no heart player you’re listening to to much WIP, take a chill pill
Bob333
NO HEARTS play when they feel like it.Nola has been over rated since he was started read the old scouting reports 2 at best most likely will be a three.Sucks in high pressure games Mr.Stats
Phillls
Sure, trade for “prospects” right? How is Phillipe Aumont doing these days? Jerad Eikhoff? Nick Williams? Jake Thompson? Ben Lively? Enyel De Los Santos? Alec Asher? Mark Appel?
TheLawAbides
Sure we can pick and choose prospects that didn’t pan out
You could also say Nick Pivetta, Cole Irvin, Tyler Gilbert, Travis d’arnaud, Carlos Carrasco, Jonathan Villar, JP Crawford to name a few
Should have looked to see if anyone was wanting to trade for McCutchen or anyone from our bullpen still
