The Rays were known to be in discussions with the Cubs last Friday about swinging a deal to land Kris Bryant and/or Craig Kimbrel. Ken Rosenthal and Dennis Lin of the Athletic shed some light on the talks, noting that the teams kicked around various potential frameworks — including ones worked around Tyler Glasnow or Kevin Kiermaier.
Moving Glasnow would’ve been part of a larger package deal that sent Bryant and Kimbrel to Tampa Bay, Rosenthal writes. It’d have been a fascinating development, since Glasnow’s one of the best pitchers in the league when healthy but facing a prolonged absence. The 27-year-old tossed 88 innings of 2.66 ERA/2.89 SIERA ball before suffering a UCL tear in mid-June. He’s spent the past six weeks attempting to rehab the injury, but reports from over the weekend suggest he’s likely to require Tommy John surgery, which would keep him out of action for most or all of the 2022 season.
The Rays made the Cubs aware of that possibility in discussions, Rosenthal notes; Tampa Bay wasn’t hoping to sneak Glasnow through a trade without the Cubs noticing he would probably need to go under the knife. Indeed, Glasnow’s forthcoming surgery was a significant roadblock in that kind of deal getting done.
Glasnow is under team control through 2023 via arbitration. If the right-hander were to miss the entirety of next season, the Cubs would’ve only been able to count on Glasnow for one year before he hit free agency. There’d then be real questions about how many innings he could responsibly take on in 2023 after missing nearly two years. The Rays would’ve had to include additional prospects to make that happen, and Rosenthal writes the team was unwilling to part with any of Wander Franco, Vidal Bruján, Shane Baz, Josh Lowe or Taylor Walls to do so with Bryant reaching free agency a few months from now.
The Kiermaier talks were a little more straightforward, as Rosenthal notes those discussions didn’t involve Kimbrel at all. Kiermaier’s inclusion in any sort of Bryant deal would’ve been to offset salary. (Bryant is playing out the season on a $19.5MM contract, while Kiermaier is making $11.5MM this year and has a $12MM guarantee for 2022, along with a $2.5MM buyout on a 2023 club option). In that instance as well, the Rays would obviously have had to send prospects along with Kiermaier to land Bryant.
Ultimately, the Rays didn’t wind up with either player, as the Cubs moved them in separate deals. Chicago sent Bryant to San Francisco for prospects Alexander Canario and Caleb Kilian, while Kimbrel landed with the White Sox for second baseman Nick Madrigal and reliever Codi Heuer. In Madrigal, the Cubs did land an injured big leaguer but he’s expected to be ready by the start of the 2022 season and comes with three more years of team control than does Glasnow.
Since the Cubs – Rays talks didn’t come to fruition, the Rays’ openness to discuss notable players on the big league roster is more of an interesting footnote than anything else. It does, however, speak to the possibility of Tampa Bay exploring something similar this offseason.
Glasnow is making $4MM this season, and his high-quality first half should land him a decent raise in arbitration this winter. His 2022 salary will probably end up somewhere between $6-8MM; even if he doesn’t pitch next season, he’d make the same amount in 2023. That’s still likely to appeal to many teams given Glasnow’s talent, but it’s a fairly sizable chunk of the Rays’ payroll, which typically lands between $60MM and $80MM. It’s not inconceivable the Rays could look to market Glasnow this offseason to a bigger-spending club, freeing up payroll space and either addressing a deficiency elsewhere on the big league team or recouping prospect talent while opening a 40-man roster spot.
That’s an entirely speculative scenario, to be clear; Rosenthal doesn’t suggest Tampa Bay is actively looking to trade Glasnow or feels obligated to shed salary over the offseason. But his involvement in discussions this summer — regardless of how far those talks actually progressed — serves as another reminder of the Rays’ (and teams’ generally) willingness to consider seemingly off-the-wall possibilities as part of a broader effort to set the organization up in both the present and future.
I’m okay with the Rays winning one (only one) title before they become the Charlotte Knights.
Quite curious about your name. 48-team MLB, huh?
What are the 18 locations you want to add a team too
Probably one for every state (just a guess) minus the Dakotas and Wyoming and some of those other corns states no one wants to visit.
Wyoming is actually a beautiful state.
Completely agree. If only we could charge admission to cows.
M’s:
Bad guesses. I can’t imagine, if there’s a team in every state, except 2, that you’d have teams in Alaska and Hawaii. For teams to travel to and from those states would be ridiculous.
Everyone wants to visit Wyoming. No one wants to live there. Could you imagine a late October game in Alaska?
Agreed very beautiful
Have to have a dome, but would definitely be interesting lol.
AND some of those other corn states, never said no one didn’t want to visit Wyoming. I agree, it is a beautiful state. The take was 48 as in lower 48-Alaska?
Nice leap.
“corn states” insert eyeroll. Thanks for making sure we all know how ignorant you are.
Hard to ignore that much corn.
I live in one of those corn states (Nebraska). I don’t know why anyone would want to visit here. I myself got sucked into the whole this is where most my family is so I stayed. If I had it to do over I would’ve moved states years ago. When I go on vacation it’s usually out of state.
Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks….just use the same name our independent team in the AA uses
After the Rays and A’s leave they could have 20 new cities. Nashville, Austin, Portland, San Antonio, Vegas, Birmingham, Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City, Charlotte, Montreal, Omaha, Columbus, San Jose, Vancouver, New Orleans, Buffalo, Winnipeg, Orlando, Ottawa, and Indianapolis?
Vegas, Nashville, Louisville, and Salt Lake would all be great locations.
Not L’ville, agree on everywhere else.
What about a team in Puerto Rico, they love baseball over there. Would MLB be allowed to have a team there?
@frankie. I don’t know why they wouldn’t be allowed a team. After all Puerto Rico is a US territory.
Just a few possibilities…
Las Vegas Vipers
Portland Thunderbirds
Vancouver Sharks
Oklahoma City Red Wolves
San Antonio Scorpions
Charlotte Knights
Nashville Bandits
Buffalo Bisons
New Orleans Gators
Mexico City Diablos
Monterrey Skull Kings
San Juan Barracudas
Salt Lake Silvers
Albuquerque Desert Dogs
Omaha Dragons
Wichita Warlocks
Raleigh Reapers
Louisville Colonels
Memphis, Indianapolis and Columbus are also possibilities but I don’t really have good ideas for names.
Memphis Blues
Indianapolis Racers
Columbus Voyagers?
I almost completely forgot about the Hartford Seals.
I don’t see Mexico getting one team, let alone two. North Carolina probably isn’t big enough to support two teams. Some of those options can barely support minor league Baseball.
In this proposed 48 team league how many games are on the schedule?
I like the Blues or Jazz for Memphis but existing clubs might object. Memphis Riverboats? Indy Racers is also what I was thinking! Maybe Indy Autos or Indy Speed are decent starting ideas as well? Love your Columbus idea, I was thinking Columbus Armada. Fun to discuss although expansion to 48 will never happen in our lifetimes.
Both leagues would have four divisions of six teams. There would be no inter-league play.
The season would be increased to 168 games to make the math easier.
12 games against each division rival (5 x 12 = 60)
Six games against the other 18 teams in your league (18 x 6 = 108)
I agree that we’ll probably never see more than 36 at most but you never know what will happen several decades from now.
There are Rangers in both MLB and the NHL. And it’s not like Blues is a city specific name for St. Louis. Although I do like the idea of Riverboats, it doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. And doesn’t really shorten that well. Do you really want to root for the Boats?
No Indianapolis? But you included Louisville? Have you been to these cities?
True, 3 syllable nicknames are generally shrugged at. Rangers exist going back before trademarks and entities were conglomerates. Litigation may not be worth it to any new prospective clubs. All intriguing options and ideas, and very true that we simply have no idea what the future beholds. Memphis Phoenix? Egyptian roots in play?
Mexico City is 2.100 feet higher in elevation than Denver. I don’t want to see the ridiculous form of baseball baseball that would result from a team there. Denver.is bad enough.
Fair point about trademarks, but I think a word as common as blue is a little too widespread to be subject to trademarks in this case. It would be different if they tried to be the Memphis Hurricanes or Memphis Predators, but I think Blues would be okay as long as the logo was nothing like the NHL logo.
No offense man, but I think Memphis Phoenix might be the worst name I have ever seen. I think the Egyptian roots would be a little too esoteric for most fans. Memphis Pyramids could be interesting though.
North Carolina will probably never receive a MLB team. It has a dozen minor league teams and their income would be crushed if a Grande Liga option was right around the corner.
No offense taken, hiflew! Just having some fun spitballin’ here. The winged music note is a heck of a logo though. Hard to consider what a different Blues franchise logo could look like. Your points on the limited appeal make sense; perhaps not many people even know that Memphis (Egypt) was the birthplace of commerce. When I said Phoenix I was thinking of Firebird merch! Haha! Enjoy the rest of the season if we don’t cross basepaths again.
Memphis Kings would make more sense because of Elvis
I like that! Just to rehash the theme… Memphis Pharaohs? Good stuff Rsox!
Talk about a clusterf— of a leavue. Wow. I like the Las Vegas Vipers. I just have a feeling that will be the A’s. Being from Las Vegas I wish they didn’t change the name of the 51’s. The Aviators is so bad in my opinion.
I think the logo could be a guitar silhouette with Memphis arched around the bottom and the word Blues down the neck. Maybe add a baseball in the guitar hole. Team colors would be blue and black.
Man I have put WAY too much thought into this! But hey at least I didn’t actually draw it out.
I don’t know why Vegas couldn’t just be the Aces. The name applies perfectly to the city’s gambling appeal and is a term for a pitcher as well. I don’t think there is a better city/baseball term combination out there.
I always liked the Memphis Showboats
Nashville has already decided it will be “STARS”
Florida having a lot of minor league teams didn’t stop them from putting 2 expansion teams there. I don’t think MLB really cares about the health of minor league organizations anyway. Especially when there are many cities from the former SALLY league that recently lost minor league teams that could serve as alternative sites for the Carolina League teams.
I always liked Nashville Sounds, but Stars fits the city as well. As long as it is not XPress, I am okay. That was one of the worst team names ever.
AT some point in the future. My guess is Florida will have one MLB team and it will be located in Orlando.
I think the Marlins are there to stay, but I do agree that the Rays will be elsewhere within 10 years.
A few more…
Virginia Beach Sand Crabs
Birmingham Hammers
Cedar Rapids Raccoons
New Jersey Jackals
At some point this sounds less like expansion and more like absorption of the Minors. How could these teams compete with the pocketbooks of say LA or NY? Player’s Union will “probably” never agree to a Salary Cap…
Some are a little out there but several of them could actually work.
Also, I know some of these markets are ridiculously small but the Rays and Athletics don’t exactly have trouble keeping up with the Yankees and Angels recently. Cleveland has also been more competitive than the White Sox over the last several decades despite the White Sox winning a World Series in 2005.
Understood, but we are talking massive dilution of talent across all boards. Beyond just players, there would be FOs, SDs and owner(s) undertaking massive uphill battles. Expansion will be 2 teams at the most… and who knows when that will even happen. 10 years from now? 20?? I respect your passion for the improbable.
Glasnow is going to bolt the second he can in Tampa.
I agree. What a way to feel appreciated by your team.
Meh. Personal feelings don’t count for much when millions are at stake. And players are always free to lock in long term contracts.
Probably going to be non-tendered this offseason so it won’t be too long.
Um, no. Still have 2023. You don’t non-tender a player with as much ability as Glasnow.
The Rays and Glasnow probably knew he needed TJ surgery and because he/they waited he won’t take to the mound til 2023. Maybe thats a sign the Cubs are punting next season and ’23 falls in line with when they hope to be competitive again. For the Rays, they must believe Glasnow isn’t worth the wait and were hoping to cash him in to someone who would be willing to wait
The article made it seem more like the rays were hiding the injury and still trying to trade him. Which seems stupid given how mlb reacted to the Padres hiding medical reports on Colin Rae I wanna say his name was when they traded him to the marlins awhile back.
Actually, it states that the Rays were up front about the situation. They are one of the best run organizations in baseball. You don’t get that way by being dishonest. Other teams sniff that out in a heartbeat and you’re toast.
what iverbure? Did you read the article? It clearly states the Rays were up front about that, which is why this was a “significant roadblock in that type of deal getting done”…jeez. I don’t know if the other people who post on here can’t read or simply ignore details so they can shoot their mouths off.
Did you even read the article?
Wow, I’m shocked that deal didn’t happen lol.
I’d much rather have the deal they got from the WS.
High risk trade for the Cubbies, who’s to say without the use of the sticky stuff Glassnow doesn’t blow out his elbow again and again……. /s
Who is to say he is even good without the sticky stuff
Could be just another Garrett Cole.
@metsfan Certainly not Dallas Keuchel.
Not sure I would touch Glasnow with a 10 foot pole right now. You will get one season probably limited innings. You might as well wait until he hits free agency.
Dumpster divin for everyone
Any chance Glasnow gets dealt in the offseason? I don’t see the Rays paying ~$14-16M for one pitching season post-surgery.
I think one of the big-market teams will trade for him. There is a small possibility that he could be ready next September, and having him for one year and two playoffs might be enough to have someone pony up.
would’ve been incredibly dumb on the cubs part… lol Glasnow
Glasnow has 400 IP in 6 years. He was never healthy before he needed TJ lol. And at best they’d get a year and a half out of him. Can’t imagine Jed gave this any real consideration.
Glasnow is a better player now than kimbrel or bryant imo
That’s inherently false considering he’s going under the knife next week.
He’s more than likely shelved until ’23. The best ability is availability, not to mention NOBODY knows if Glasnow will heal properly.
The best ability is not availability. Chris Davis has been available for tons of games where the Os probably wished he wasn’t because he had went off into retirement.
With all due respect Mr. Outlaw, I meant to compare just the 3 named players. I’ll take a healthy KB or Kimbrel if I’m trying to win “right now” as mentioned, not a broken Glasnow.
Well if the Orioles had not used their signability poorly then Davis’s availability would not be a problem.
What a insanely dumb take. Glasnow better than Bryant and Kimbrel. Fans are just so dumb.
Glasnow was pitching very well before his injury, but he was also utilizing a banned substance. Is he really that good? Plenty of guys are coming back down to earth with the crackdown on sticky fingers… Will he completely recover from surgery? These are legit questions. Kimbrel alone netted the Cubs 2 major league players.
Portland Protestors
Rays need to find a way in the offseason to shed the Kiermaier contract – guy is an albatross
You took my take “albatross” and all. Margot and Phillips are the same player as KK. Geat D blah offense. Combined they make %20 of KK. Get rid of him at all costs and use the money for a power hitting right handed first baseman
Neat fact….Kiermaier’s brother is the head groundskeeper for the Cubs.
Love Glasnow, but business is business. He’s making a lot of money (for the Rays) to sit on the bench and *maybe* come back at the same level 2 years. He’s an injury risk and that limits how much he is worth despite the massive talent when healthy.
They have a chance to win this year despite losing their best pitcher. Glad he gave them some quality innings at the start of the year at least. I would love to see the Rays win just one WS.
It seems obvious that none of the prospects mentioned in the article were considered by the Rays in a Kiermaier deal (Franco, Brujan, Baz, Lowe, or Walls). Those first four are elite prospects!! I wonder if Greg Jones was considered? He’s an absolute beast. I also like Edwards, but Jones looks to have a higher ceiling.
I was excited to hear the Rays were involved in talks with the Cubs for Kimbrel and Bryant, as the Rays system is absolutely loaded.
With the Cubs kicking in money, I would have been happy with a Bryant, Kimbrel, + cash deal for Kiermaier + prospects Greg Jones, Xavier Edwards, Taj Bradley, and Brent Honeywell. Something like that would have been amazing.
I did think the Bryant and Kimbrel trades were a little light on the return, unless the entire prospect evaluation world is wrong about Caleb Kilian’s ability. If his stats are a true reflection of ability, then it’s a decent return.
I’m a little confused. I thought players on the IL couldn’t be traded?
False, they can be
If the rays offer you a pitcher say no
