The Rangers announced they’ve claimed outfielder DJ Peters off waivers from the Dodgers. Los Angeles had designated Peters for assignment over the weekend.
It’s not particularly surprising to see a team take a shot on Peters, who’s long been considered a prospect of some note. Peters’ combination of big power and enough athleticism to play a passable center field has long intrigued evaluators, even as swing-and-miss concerns have clouded his overall projection. Peters ran strikeout rates approaching or exceeding the 30% mark throughout his low minors tenure, although he hit for enough power to remain productive.
Peters played his way to the big leagues for the first time in 2021, picking up 34 plate appearances over 18 games. He’s otherwise spent the year with Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he’s had some uncharacteristic struggles. The 25-year-old is hitting just .233/.319/.372 with four homers across 204 plate appearances in a hitter-friendly environment, his first season of below-average production in the minors.
To his credit, Peters has actually cut his strikeout rate to its lowest level (28.4%) since his 2016 stint in rookie ball. He also still has an additional minor league option year beyond this season, so the Rangers have time to give Peters plenty of run at Triple-A Round Rock if he sticks on the 40-man roster. There’s no real downside for Texas in taking a flyer on a player with obvious physical gifts who was squeezed off Los Angeles’ deeper roster.

Picking up dodgers garbage
BloodySox
Dodgers are so loaded, their DFAs could probably start for another team.
madmanTX
All teams do it. Dodgers even traded for Darvish at one point. How’d that work out for the Dodgers?
tstats
A 3.44 ERA down the stretch for a prospect in the negative WAR catergoey that would not fit on the 2018-2021 dodgers, seems like a GREAT deal to me
CobiEven
You seem bitter? Or maybe mad?
CobiEven
Also the only reason Darvish did poorly in the World Series was because the other sorry Texas team knew what was coming. That has to mess with anyone’s head. Despite all this Darvish stated pretty classy. Unlike you, who is crapping on one of the better pitchers in your team’s history. Stay classy as always Texas.
fox471 Dave
One of the “better pitchers in the team’s history?” That’s one of the dumber statements in MLBTR’s history.
txphi_991
Bitter to Texas much? 4-3 3.44 era in LA is not what the Dodgers were expecting to get

Dumpster diving rangers

Butthurt because the Brewers didn’t get there first. Too slow.
hopper15
Some people criticized Zaidi for dumpster diving.
CobiEven
He finds gold on occasion while digging in the trash. All Texas will find is more heart break. Imagine trading Darvish and getting nothing for him, that must make one a little mad.

Waiver claims and released pitchers signed by the Dodgers this year:
Phil Bickford (off waivers from the Brewers)
Nate Jones (released by the Braves)
Yefry Ramirez (released by the Mets)
James Sherfy (off waivers from the Giants)
Jake Reed (off waivers from the Rays)
frankiegxiii
Ouch, lost him for nothing.

When the jays were trading Stroman a few years ago i was hoping if he went to the Dodgers that peters would be one kf the peices. He has a chance to be a decent player probably of the Randel Grichuk ilk. Nothing that would blow you out of the water but a solid major leaguer who can hit 25-30 bombs and play a decent center field. If either of those guys could make more contact or talk a few more walks look out

Should have picked up Shaw from the Orioles
DarkSide830
he’s injured

Peters has all the tools EXCEPT the ability to make contact. Too much whiff. So close….
A Seal
Darn, I was hoping they could keep him and work on him. At least don’t lose him for nothing.
And WHY do the Rangers like Dodgers rejects so much?
justinkm19
No risk. Simple concept.

Came from a top tier development program… I can see why

Don’t disagree

In this case the Rangers actually drafted DJ Peters once before, before the Dodgers did, but didn’t sign him. So they’ve liked him for awhile.
And the Dodgers did lose him for nothing. 😉
But as much as we fans liked him, the K rate has always been hugely problematic and seemed an issue in his brief stints with LA this year. Obviously if he can work on contact rate issues he can become someone of note, given his other tools.. Wish him the best!
empirejim
Id say losing a Peters but gaining a Trea is a very good swap…

Really going out on a limb there 😉

I do to but we could’ve fixed him, he had great potential.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I’ve generally been the most critical of Peters. The ability to find contact at a certain point is not necessarily teachable. He is similar to Kyle Russell in that regard, especially in his K rate. Peters has gotten exposed in the upper minors. He’s had two good months above A ball, and then was adjusted to. It’s really telling, especially at AA, as to whether or not players can make that adjustment.
The fact of the matter is Peters needs to play at the mlb level to show, or not, that he can make. The Dodgers can’t afford him that ability in all reality. He’s also been passed on the depth chart by a couple guys, with Pages hot on his tail. He’s tools “ie” which is why the rangers are willing to take a chance, but just power in this league has not been suppressed so you have to bring more to the table to help a team with its eyes set on trying to win a championship.
CobiEven
I hope he does well too. I think Texas will be able to give him tons of ABs. I think this was an I-owe-you-one for Texas. We don’t want the Dodgers farm team to be unhappy.
BeforeMcCourt
Hoping he becomes Joey Gallo lite
Good luck
empirejim
If he figures out how to consistently put the ball in play there wont be anything “lite” about him. Great speed, strong arm, ton of power. Just doesnt put it in play enough, so far…
Kingman#26
Get rid of that Giant killer in the making, one career Bomb against the Giants of course.
Burgeezy
I was hoping Cleveland would have grabbed this guy but Texas beat us to it

The Joey Gallo Project, Part 2.
tschdery
His OBP is almost double his batting average. Seems intriguing enough for the rangers to give him at bars
A Seal
That’s b/c of 4 IBBs when he hits in front of the pitcher. Remove those and not so much.
