I see that the Phillies are 2.5 games back.. that’s nice that you guys have hope. But I’m just here to remind you guys that you’ll never see first place this whole year. And the only reason you are even close to us is bc of injury luck. Shows you how the two teams are in different levels… good luck.
The Baseball Fan
Yeah, obviously the Mets are the most competitive team in the most competitive division. You don’t even have to try to win, so why should you? The division is a complete LOCK for the Mets, and so is the World Series. Heck, they are the best team since the Cleveland Spiders- I MEAN, 1908 Cubs. Every other team sucks, right? So what, we’re only 5 games above .500, we are still the greatest of all time. Right?
Ridiculous.
Rob 23
Haha! Mets fans. 35 years and counting.

The Mets should be grateful they’re playing in such a weak division. In the Central or West they’d be 3rd or 4th place.
Ducky Buckin Fent
In the AL East they would be in 5th.
Gwynning
Muttsfan22 making his team easy to root against, and I generally like everyone and love baseball.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Personally, @Gwynning, I kinda like metsfan22. He is loyal, energetic, & perseverant. In short: all qualities I seek in…well, my hunting dogs.

Do with this take as you see fit.

Everyone else is still living rent free in MF22’s paranoid head… even though I’m pretty sure that there isn’t a lot of room there to start with.

MetsFan likes to poke the bear than sit back and watch the responses roll in. Well played, sir.
As a side note, do you have an opinion on the Yankees? Keep in mind, they have a better record than the Mets.
MetsFan22
The Yankees are a good team. But they aren’t better than the Mets. If you look at the injures from both team. It’s sad that they don’t have a better record by 10 games.

Why is this guy always talking about the Mets injuries like they have it worse than anyone. I do agree the Phillies are overrated because any team whose opponents have outscored them by 18 runs isn’t a good 2nd place team. The Mets have been outscored by 10 runs though which makes them the worst first place team in baseball. The Braves lost Ynoa, Soroka, d’Anaud, Ozuna and Acuna but have still outscored their opponents by 49 runs. Any team that gets outscored is lame and blaming anything on injuries when you don’t even have a player the caliber of Acuna to lose in the first place is even lamer. Even Ozuna was a better hitter last season than any player on the Mets. So the Braves lost multiple players that are better than any Mets players lost and you don’t see Braves fans whining about it on the message board. If anything the Mets fans should be complaining Cohen wasted his $341 million on an overrated light hitting player like Lindor. They could have gotten a MUCH better player than him with that kind of money. $341 million should get you a player that can win an MVP with his bat alone. Lindor won’t even compete for a silver slugger much less an MVP. He’s just not a good enough hitter.

@BovineCrab The Phillies aren’t good. So I’m not arguing that, but the Phillies run differential is bloated because of their back end rotation, and the fact that in many of those games they ended up using position players to finish out those games. It’s not really an accurate stat of what the Phillies are because they changed their backend rotation for the better. I think the Phillies are exactly what their record shows, a fine average team with some great talent, but not enough depth.
BovineCrab
That’s true. That only accounts for so much. Every team also goes through blowout games and eventually trots there worst pitcher out there to give up a ton of runs. I guess what I mean is if you compare them to other teams that are close to contention, the Phillies really aren’t even close. Look at the Toronto Blue Jays for instance. The Blue Jays haven’t been outscored at all. They have actually outscored their opponents by 104 runs compared to the Phillies -18. That’s a 122 run difference. There’s no way the Phillies position players pitching in blowouts gave up anywhere close to that many runs all season long. The Blue Jays are that much better and they are only a 4th place team. Even in our much easier division the Phillies shouldn’t really be a 2nd place team with that kind of run differential. 3rd place at best and arguably 4th. If the Phillies moved to the Blue Jays division they would be behind the 4th place Blue Jays which would make them a 5th place team. That’s not even close to being a 2nd place team trying to win the division. To be fair, the Blue jays are the best 4th place team in baseball. But the Phillies are definitely the worst 2nd place team in baseball and the Mets are definitely the worst 1st place team in baseball so it does kind of even out and make it a fair comparison in terms of team talent. Everyone was talking about how great the red Sox were but the rays had out runned them by 20 runs. That caught up and now the rays lead

The law of averages basically implies the teams with the best run differential usually end up overtaking the teams win worse differential given enough time. The Braves differential is so much better than anyone in the division. At least the law of averages suggests that given enough time the Braves would overtake everyone in the division and the Phillies would never overtake the Mets leaving the Phillies as a 3rd place team that never even makes the playoffs much less compete while they are there even with their new additions. The only thing the Phillies can really hope for is that the season ends before that can happen. The Mets could be taken over now though. With the loss of deGrom it’s likely the Mets got worse even with their additions. The Braves definitely got better though considering Acuna has been gone for awhile and they weren’t bad without him. The Phillies need the season to last just long enough for them to take over the Mets but not long enough for the Braves to overtake the Phillies. That’s a tough needle to thread and it doesn’t bode well for the Phillies as a playoff team even if they do thread the needle and win the division.
VonPurpleHayes
No one is scared of the Mets. They didn’t start scoring runs consistently when their “core” came back from injury. deGrom very realistically may require surgery. The injuries aren’t something that goes away. As guys come back, others get hurt. Walker’s amazing start is over, and the guy is clearly fatigued. The Mets pen, while leagues better than the Phils and Braves, is all of a sudden not great. The Mets are mediocre. Luckily for them so are the Braves and Phillies. This horrible division is going to have an exciting finish. So that’s fun. Still a bit baffled that the Mets traded for an all-or-nothing power hitter instead of another starting pitcher or two. That’s what the Mets really need to hold the fort.
SalaryCapMyth
Shouldn’t the Mets be running away with the division by now? I mean you keep predicting that. Wonder why the Mets can’t seem to pull away from teams playing so poorly, right?
bigj
Phillies were in 1st place for like a day or two earlier in the season
RunDMC
There’s a pennant up in LF commemorating it.
Pour your drink out for those fightin’ Phils.
mlb1225
2.5 games at this point of the season is almost nothing. a 3-5 stretch from the Mets could easily be enough for the Phillies to overtake the division.
