The Mariners have placed Diego Castillo on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation, recalling Robert Dugger from Triple-A to fill his roster spot, per the team.
The acquisition of Castillo from the Rays at the trade deadline was a calculated gamble by GM Jerry Dipoto to gain more long-term security without suffering a drop-off from Kendall Graveman, an impending free agent who was dealt to the Astros. Castillo has more-or-less performed as expected, considering the small sample.
Castillo has one save in 10 outings since joining Seattle, tossing 9 1/3 innings and allowing four earned runs. In total on the year, Castillo has a 2.96 ERA/3.92 FIP in 45 2/3 innings with the Rays and Mariners.
Dugger has bounced back and forth between Tacoma and the bigs this season, his first with the Mariners. The results have been underwhelming at both stops, however. He has a 7.30 ERA in 37 innings in Triple-A and a 6.45 ERA in 22 1/3 innings with the Mariners.

Yeah, I’m gonna guess his shoulder. Probably inflammation or something like that.

It’s crazy how much trader Jerry dropped the ball at the deadline.

Completely disagree. Toro, who came over in the trade, has been great both offensively and defensively, was rated as high as #3 as a prospect in a strong Houston system, and was sought after by multiple teams. And Joe Smith, who also came over in that trade, has not given up an earned run in ten appearances since coming to Seattle, and has a WHIP of something like 0.89…..and that includes an intentional walk.
Castillo isn’t physically 100% at the moment, but is a good RP with three more years of control. Graveman was a free agent at the end of this year.

Not at all. The media can overblow Graveman all they want. Getting Toro for an impending free agent who will get paid elsewhere was solid.

As what others have said, anyone who says Dipoto blew it just doesn’t understand what really happened and probably needs to stop listening to Hayman. Jerry did extremely well with the Graveman trade, and smartly didn’t trade away the top 4 prospects in the system for some modest upgrades for a still flawed team. They need more than just a SP and an aging 2B.

I’m genuinely curious…. What specifics are using as the foundation for your opinion?

AND, if Graveman wants to return to Seattle, Dipoto can try to sign him this winter.
bob9988 2
That’s if the owner signs him to a new contract. Dipoto doesn’t have a job after the World Series. Stanton must have his eye on Theo, otherwise, I don’t understand what he’s waiting on. Jerry deserves more than a one year deal. And he should hold out for more.

The pick-up of Abraham Toro in the Houston trade was a major target for GM Dipoto, who had been after Toro for over a year. And RP Joe Smith, who came over from Houston with Toro for Graveman, has been rock-solid for Seattle.
Castillo has had a drop in velocity and bite on his slider, and it was pretty clear he wasn’t quite right, so this IL assignment is likely a good move for all concerned.

Feels like every time we aquire a pitcher from TB, they always end up having injury issues. Atleast this time we have 3 years control; so hopefully we can get him right before next season.

If he’s right for next season, and if Giles and Munoz are too, the bullpen could continue to be solid. Who knows how they might use Paxton if he comes back? There has been talk of adding him to the bullpen mix too… and who knows what they’ll end up doing with Dunn and Sheffield if they keep them around? No shortage of arms in Seattle!

What other pitchers has Seattle acquired from TB that had injury issues?

Smyly

Shae simmons was also aquired that trade deadline with Smiley, both injured. Both ended up not being tendered contracts after the season.
It’s not just TB either. David Phelps from the Marlins also turned out bad with an injury. He was aquired the year after the Smiley and Simmons trades. We have had a lot of bad luck with pitching trades.
Those two deadlines sucked. TJ surgery for Smiley and Phelps. Flexor Strain which ended Phelps year.
Mariners trade Luiz Gohara and Thomas Burrows to the Atlanta Braves for Simmons and Mallex Smith.
Mariners trade Smith, Carlos Vargas and Ryan Yarbrough to the Tampa Bay Rays for Smyly.
Mariners trade Brayan Hernandez, Pablo Lopez, Brandon Miller and Lukas Schiraldi to the Marlins for Phelps.
So in those 3 trades alone. 8 prospects for 3 injured piitchers.

Got a crystal pitcher of warm beer it was warm when it got here. Only to be thrown to the ground and broken by a Dipoto hating Angel fan.

One thing that hasn’t been talked about much is the 4 game series in NY. Our BP has been good this year but they gave up the lead in the first 3 games. If they would have won 3 of 4 or swept the conversation would be drastically different.

That’s a great photograph.

The Mariners administration always were a bunch of cheapskates. You’ve seen this movie year after year after year since Lou Piniella had them knocking on the door of the World Series. They refused him an arm and a bat. That tradition of cheapness has continued through today. If the Mariners have gotten the players that Oakland did they’d be right up Houston’s butt right now if not in first place.
