Yankees right-hander Luis Severino reported tightness in his throwing shoulder yesterday, and was scratched from a planned Triple-A rehab start. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (Twitter link) reported that Severino will see doctors on Monday, with Yankees manager Aaron Boone telling reporters (including Newsday’s Erik Boland) that Severino will undergo an MRI. More will be known once Severino is examined, with Boone expressing hope at this point that the injury is only “something minor,” and saying “I feel awful for [Severino]” in the wake of yet another potential injury setback.
Severino missed much of the 2019 season due to shoulder and lat injuries, and then didn’t pitch at all in 2020 because of Tommy John surgery. His return from that rehab was tentatively scheduled for around the All-Star break before he suffered a groin injury in June that pushed his timetable back another month. The righty had already made four minor league rehab appearances, and it is possible Friday’s outing might have been his final hurdle before finally returning to the Yankees’ active roster.
Now, it is fair to wonder if Severino might be sidelined for another full season, given the timing of this shoulder issue. Anything beyond basic soreness could require another shutdown, so it could conceivably be September before Severino again appears in a game. It’s worth noting that Severino didn’t make his 2019 debut until September 17 (appearing in three regular-season games before starting two postseason contests), though even this usage may not be feasible depending on the nature of this new shoulder problem. After such a long layoff, the last thing the Yankees would want is for Severino to incur yet another injury due to a desire just to get any game action in for the 2021 season.
The Bronx Bombers have long been counting on Severino to provide a late boost to the pitching staff, especially considering the team’s pitching ranks have been decimated by other injuries and a COVID-19 outbreak. On the latter front, there is some good news, as Boone said Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery threw bullpen sessions yesterday and are on pace to be activated from the COVID list early next week.

As is so often the case; oh what could have been.

I’m so soy to hear that news. He was an ann MB axing pitcher, even if he mowed down my Red Sox, I thought he was amazingly talented.

They predicted this after his breakout in the minors catapulted him to the top of the Yankees prospects. He was small for a pitcher who constantly hit the high 90’s plus he had a wanky delivery. They should have turned him into the next Rivera by moving him to the bullpen right away. Unfortunately he was about the same size as a young Pedro Martinez and that’s who they compared him to. Pedro was a major exception to the rule not the norm. If smaller thinner pitchers want long lives as a quality starter they need to study the way Maddux used to approach the game. I never saw him throw over 91 and he was a lights out ace for the majority of the 90’s. Johan Santana should realistically be what the team hopes for not Pedro.

Pedro is three inches shorter then Luis.

It’s not exceedingly uncommon for pitchers returning from Tommy John surgery to have a some sort of shoulder issue. Hopefully it does end up being minor–it’d be reasonable to assume any type of formal shutdown here ends his season though.
The good thing is, Severino will only be 28-years-old heading into ’22.
whosehighpitch
He was to pitch for AAA last night and was suddenly scratched. Was hoping he pitched for the RailRiders to hopefully break the sudden skid they were on. SMH

Dude! Maybe the Yankees should just ignore the doctors and medical science and just wrap this guy in duct tape. I hope this isn’t serious.

Man, I feel for this kid.
Get better quick, Sevy. We really need you.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, man, and it seemed that he was finally back on track and throwing well. I hope he recovers, but I know he pushed it to come back. Wonder if the repaired elbow perhaps caused him to put more incidental stress on his shoulder. Although anecdotal, I know my shoulder reconstruction caused me to put more stress on my throwing elbow subconsciously.
Thoughts and prayers with Sevy while he endures recovery.

Really like this kid.
I don’t mind my ballplayers to have a little attitude, or moxy, or swag or whatever term is being used.
& he has so much ability.
Sure, he did pretty much all the stuff that young pitchers do that are so maddening; “ya gotta throw the change too, Sevy”, “oooh…he is way too amped up here in the first”, “aww, man. You can’t just blow it by a hitter like that…”.
Ya know? All of it!
But I am hopelessly enamored with that straight up & down gunfighter strut of his. The young man would still be hitting 98 in the 8th. So he earned it.
D’accord.
Sounds like maybe a compensation type injury. Core/base + the elbow.
Was hoping to get to see him throw this summer. Guess I just hope we’ll get to see him take the mound ever at this point.
By all accounts he is hugely popular amongst his teammates. Could be a real boost to us in a lot of ways. But he’s gotta get himself right first.
Can win another series tomorrow, @Clip.
Go Yanks.
Yep it is
Wow does this mean Yankee Fans have to take him out of the HOF they already had put him in??
mike156
I’m sure that was fun to write…but, poor taste when talking about (another) injury. Still, I see you got likes, so, what they heck, right?
tidybowlman
I saw the same stuff written under the deGrom thread. It’s sad.
justacubsfan
This definitely shows you why there’s so much risk in extending pitchers. At the time of the deal, a lot of talking heads liked the deal for yankees, but he’s been disappointing ever since.
Orel Saxhiser
He hasn’t been disappointing. He’s been injured.
Ronk325
It’s definitely been a disappointment in the sense that Sevy has barely been on the field but overall the deal isn’t a total bust, at least not yet. He was headed to arbitration and coming off back to back strong seasons so his salary was going up anyway. Sevy would have been a free agent after this season as well so the extra year plus the option for 2023 means the Yankees still have control of him at a somewhat reasonable rate if he can finally stay healthy
pino
He will never pitch again for the Yankees.
Thankyou for your time Sevy
mpc5150
I guess Cashman was right about not handing out extensions. Serevino and Hicks have worked out wonderfully.
gruber63
How long are the Yankees going to keep Jonathan Davis? He’s hitting worse than when he was with the Jays.
Dickiesox
Cash and Boone are so BLIND!
wreckage
Why attempt to make this a forum about the Jays?
Not a fan of either team, but attempting to hijack it to be one about the Jays is kinda weak.
The Jays fans already have the Springer post to comment on. No reason to make this one about them. Next we’ll see that Mets kid come in and make it about how they would have won it all “if not for injury”
sambino
Get well soon Severino!.
whyhayzee
BMI = 28
And so it goes.

I’d like to take a moment to thank the Orioles for giving the Yanks absolutely less than no help in our quest for the pennant. They somehow beat us 7-1, and then proceeded to lose 10 straight while giving up 9.8 rpg. (yes, 2 of those ten were losses to us, but still…) There’s time to restore some pride, my friendly cellar-dwelling fowl, as you have important games left to play with Tampa! Oh, and special note to C.Sale: glad you’re not hurt anymore, but dont expect 16 runs of support every time going forward. Let’s gird our collective loins, Yankee fans (eww!), the playoffs await!
gruber63
You can’t count on other teams to beat the teams in front of NYY, Yankees need to take care of their own business. Unfortunately for us Yankee fans this team this year is just mediocre to say the least, constantly stranding runners, let’s opposing teams hang around and the bullpen keeps blowing games late. I don’t see this team going to WS.
