The Mets placed Luis Guillorme on the IL today with a left hamstring strain, according to Mike Puma of The New York Post. RHP Geoff Hartlieb was added to the roster in a corresponding move. Guillorme has been a solid contributor on a Mets team that has dealt with its fair share of injuries this year. Across 57 games, Guillorme has racked up a wRC+ of 116 while filling in at second base, third base and shortstop. The timing isn’t so bad for the Mets, as they just strengthened their infield by adding Javier Baez in a deadline deal with the Cubs. As for Hartlieb, he’s produced solid results at Triple-A this year. Despite a walk rate of 10.5%, he has an ERA of 1.86, thanks to a hefty strikeout rate of 34.2%. His numbers at the major league level aren’t as good, but in a very small sample size of six innings.
Other injury updates from around the league…
- Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register provides some updates from manager Joe Maddon on various injured Angels. Anthony Rendon “still isn’t doing any baseball activity,” since going on the IL almost a month ago. “I spoke with him yesterday and he wasn’t highly optimistic about things,” Maddon is quoted as saying. This seems to be yet another in a series of disappointments for Rendon this year. He’s been injured multiple times and, even when healthy, played well below his usual level from recent years. There’s also a murky update on Mike Trout and his injured calf. Doctors have told him he’s “free to do more work when he no longer feels discomfort,” which seems to imply that the discomfort remains. The update on Jared Walsh, out with a right intercostal strain, is slightly better. The first baseman “has been able to hit and throw.” As for Shohei Ohtani, who was recently hit on his thumb by a foul ball while in the dugout, Maddon says they expect him to start again on Thursday or Friday.
- The Red Sox swung a trade before the deadline to add Kyle Schwarber, even though he was on the IL at the time with a hamstring injury. But it doesn’t seem like he’s too far removed from making his Boston debut. Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe spoke to Alex Cora, who said that Schwarber is “close” to a rehab assignment. The plan is for Schwarber to get work at first base, since the Red Sox already have their outfield and DH slots filled by Alex Verdugo, Jarren Duran, Hunter Renfroe and J.D. Martinez. The first base playing time has largely been going to Bobby Dalbec and his wRC+ of 74. Before going on the IL, Schwarber’s wRC+ was sitting at 137. Assuming he can play passable defense, that would be a tremendous upgrade for the team. But he’s played only one major league game at first, which was back in 2017.
- Dinelson Lamet is going to begin a rehab assignment on Wednesday, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. The plan seems to be to prepare Lamet for a bullpen role, since there’s not much time remaining in the season to build him back up for a full workload, and because he’s struggled to stay healthy this year. The righty was utterly dominant in 2020’s shortened season, throwing 69 innings with an ERA of 2.09 and a superb strikeout rate of 34.8%. This year, in between stints on the IL, his numbers have faded to an ERA of 3.67 and 25.5% strikeout rate. The club will be hoping that a smaller workload will help Lamet bridge some of that gap.

Angels are just cursed. I’m beginning to lose hope that we’ll see the full and healthy lineup this season.
Halo11Fan
This season? How about any season in our lifetimes?
Gwynning
You guys forgetting about 2002 already? I’ll give my firstborn for a ring…
VonPurpleHayes
Everyone says that, but a Championship only has a halflife of 5-7 years tops. It’s not like you’ll be content forever off one Championship. 2002 was a long time ago. I doubt anyone is still riding that high. I’m a Phillies fan. They won in 2008, and haven’t had a playoff berth since then. All the goodwill from 2008 is gone. Sure it’s a great memory and all, but you want to see meaningful baseball again. Doesn’t necessarily need to be another Championship.
A'sfaninUK
This is the least logical thing I have ever read on here, congrats. Total nonsense from start to finish. You cant be over 30.
jakerafferty87
Still reliving the white Sox 2005 WS over here. Juan Uribe is etched in my brain with the final out
VonPurpleHayes
I don’t mean the memory goes away. I mean that as a fan you’re not just content. You want meaningful sports again. You don’t just stop watching because you won over a decade ago.
Halo11Fan
We are not forgetting about 2002. We will never forget about 2002.
VonPurpleHayes
A’s, explain what’s illogical about it. I don’t mean that in a combative way. I’m genuimely curious. You’re telling me if the A’s won once in your lifetime you’d be content? You’d never want to win another? The commenter mentiomed 2002 as if Angels fans just won…2002 is almost 20 years ago. That’s long enough to be considered suffering IMO.
Dustyslambchops23
I agree only because of the circumstances .
Not seeing trout see in the playoffs and without a ring sucks.

Deep in the playoffs*

Dont bother with A’sfaninuk, he’s not really an A’s fan to begin with. Just a common troll.

Ahh well. More power to them I guess. Thanks for the heads-up, Pete.

Did Phils miss playoffs in 2009-11 ??

Don’t remind Angels fans. That was our year. ALCS game 2. AJ pierzynski can eat a large d!ck.
Halo11Fan
Don’t forget the bases loaded interference that wasn’t called that turned into a DP. That was a horribly umpired series.
bravesfan0618
You should be a Braves fan. 14 division titles, but only one championship.
VonPurpleHayes
Nope. 2009-2011 was great. And even though 2011 was painful and disappointing, I was cool with it because 2008 was still fresh in my head. 2012-2021 has been a disaster. Not only 0 playoff appearances, but not a winning season to be found. That’s a long time without anything remotely meaningful.
YankeesBleacherCreature
I can’t remember anyone’s Subway commercials besides Ryan Howard’s.

I’m a 63 year old Cleveland fan. I’ll be content with one World Series title since I have zero in my lifetime. Lol

Haha. That’s actually true for me as well.

From my perspective, the Angels typically have “top heavy” teams. I would be hard pressed to name better players in the AL than Trout & Ohtani, for example.
I’m not exactly accusing them of fielding stars & scrubs squads. But it does strike me as a version of that?
So.
When they are effected by injury it seems to have a pretty big impact on their ballclub. I know you’ve harped on their bullpen, but it also seems that their overall depth is not on par with a lot of contenders.
I certainly may have the wrong number here.
However, that is my impression.
LordD99
Too heavy, and never a focus on starting pitching.
LordD99
Top.
ElysianPark
You are absolutely correct.
Halo11Fan
Being top heavy is not the problem, they have a lot of nice pieces. What they don’t have is a good starting rotation or adequate relief pitching.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Gotta drive Angels fans nutty.
You have Trout whom is easily the best player of his generation. A first ballot Hall of famer. When writers at fangraphs needed something to write about, they’d just dig through his numbers & find something else to put an article together, serious. They admitted it.
& Ohtani?
He has a legitimate chance to hit 50+ jacks & swipe 25+ bags. All while being one of the what?, easily 10 best starting pitchers in the AL. He’ll definitely get Cy Young votes. That’s just…man, insert whatever superlatives you want & it’s accurate.
Yet they are below .500.
I can’t imagine how frustrating that must be.
VonPurpleHayes
The Angels are the Phillies except with more injuries.
Halo11Fan
Trout and Rendon are not here. Right now they have Ohtani.
When everyone is together, after Walsh, Rendon, Trout and Ohtani they have Fletcher Stassi, Iglesias and Upton.
That’s only top heavy because Trout and Ohtani are so good.
Every time the bullpen comes in a close game in the 7th inning I’m frustrated.
kellin
You have no idea.. Every year it seems like the team goes on the cheap for pitching and it shows.
DODGER JR
Artie loves to pick up bargin basement players. He is like the 99 cent store genius. When they were going to the playoffs in the mid 2000’s and beyond they have strong starting pitching (Lackey, Weaver) ETC that is not the case anymore..Artie hasn’t a clue how to run a baseball team.
BeforeMcCourt
Their owner likes to see dingers more than strikeouts. And he can be talked into overpays
BuJoBi
That’s exactly what people are saying with a lack of depth. When you have superstars on your team usually you build around them with depth and mid-level stars. That’s what the Angels have been lacking for years, they seem to be one of the worst lately at developing pitching
A'sfaninLondonUK
Morning Ducky,
The Angels have got a nice young core of SPs and a “problem” looming in Ohtani. Detmers is 22 years old, Sandoval is 24 & Suarez is 23 (was listening to the A’s/Angels game last night) so that’s a bright young core even if they have to sign veterans (hopefully for them they’ll be better than Bundy) for a couple of years and use a six man rotation to encompass Ohtani.
The problem is Ohtani’s arbitration in 2023. If Mookie Betts got around $30m – what could/should Ohtani command if he can stay double duty? And then Ohtani’s free agency when Trout & Rendon are together on the books – the pair – for $75m a year. (Justin Upton will be off the books by then though….)
Not throwing stones at the Angels – quite the opposite – it’s a bit baffling as an A’s fan when an owner is as willing as Arte Moreno to throw out the lucre. When it’s a bit on the misdirected/snakebitten side. This core of young SP and the twenty they drafted paints a different long term picture. AL west next year will be even more err, even…
London…
Halo11Fan
Ohtani is signed for two years. As you said, he doesn’t hit arbitration until 2023.
Why are people concerned with 2023?
People are complaining Rendon is too old…. When? At 34? He just turned 31. Ohtani has already been a free agent and chose to play here. Something likely will be worked out in 2024.
If the Angels emphasize the bullpen, like the A’s, and they add a starter that at least has a chance to be good, they are fine.
It’s a big shortstop market next year. Shortstop won’t be a hole.
A'sfaninLondonUK
Hello Halo11fan,
“Why are people concerned about 2023?”
It’s because you (the Angels) can’t afford to lose the unicorn. This guy is the baseball comic book super hero of all time. Seriously – if he can stay two way healthy (an achievement in itself) what should he get in 2023. AAV $50m? If the CBT starts at $250m next time out, three players have just used up half of it.
I certainly don’t think Rendon is too old either – but I’ve seen the comments…
You’d prefer a five man not a six man rotation?
Of the fascinating franchises, that you follow out of curiosity the Angels are right up there. Admittedly the Rockies are far and away kings of the castle on that one though..
Nodlon (differentiating)….
Halo11Fan
He already chose to play for the Angels. He’s going to play on the West Coast for an AL team. He’s not going anywhere.
I fine with a six man rotation.
When it was a game.
Or any teams. Seems every year opening day is full of injuries and doesnt slow down.
Ducky Buckin Fent
“That’s only top heavy because Trout & Ohtani are so good.”
I’ll buy that.
Haven’t seen the Angels much. But every time I do, their ‘pen has been busy losing games for them.
lime chutley
Agreed. Trout is just amazing, and what Ohtani is doing is insane. I remember laughing to myself over all the hype when he was coming over, thinking “failure” was written all over it. Now I wouldn’t trust myself to pick out a color of tissue paper.
Halo11Fan
I remember when Ichiro came over, I thought the same thing.
86mets
I’d ask the author if he saw Hartleib pitch today. He CAN NOT THROW STRIKES. He has no business being in MLB.
Cosmo2
Dude is a walk machine
Canosucks
So why not Tropeano? Long time Mets fan.
HalosHeavenJJ
Let Trout and Rendon rehab with a goal of 2022. Season is toast. Sucks to pay for a ticket plan and not see them, but that’s life.

Luis is my fave Met. Then Nimmo. Then deGrom. Then Dom bc all were very engaging and fan friendly at Savannah in SAL.

Mine too, but mainly because of the beard.

Matt Strahm should be considered as a starter/opener for the Padres. Lamet’s injury issues might curse him forever as delicate, leave him in the bullpen.
Cubs Dynasty
Good luck sticking Schwarber at first base. The Red Sox better find a different spot. Not the outfield either. Schwarber is a natural DH…nothing more.
Lloyd Emerson
And learning how to play first base on a tweaked hamstring is just a recipe for re-injury
bobtillman
Paying your #8 prospect (albeit in a short system) for Schwarber was just idiotic. Really, beyond comprehension. At his best, he’s a K machine who clogs the bases and is a negative defender. Then taking this lout and telling him he’s a 1B is just comical.
I’m sue Cora said to his coaches, “Does Wonder Boy have a clue how you win games?”.
Again, with all the improvements the rest of the division made, it’s gonna get ugly….
GASoxFan
Meanwhile, did you see dalbec picking all manner of errant throws tonight, especially the 8th inning?
He’s doing the splits. He’s saving a ball sailing into the stands, he’s going all over which are instincts a FA-to-be nursing an angry hammy isn’t going to do.
Schwarbs isn’t going to save the offense. JDM left what, 6 on base tonight with a poor outing?
Sox usually start slow after the AS break, but pitching and defense win championships. The trade in question brought neither.
JoeBrady
Paying your #8 prospect
=========================
According to FG, he was #14. He only became #8 when he joined the Nats’ weaker system.
BuJoBi
I agree with every comment on this feed lol that’s rare but you are all so right. I see Dalbec taking most of the reps at 1st and Schwarber becoming a pinch hitter or they rotate him with Renfroe which is still a big downgrade on defense
TribeFan88
Anthony Rendon is 31 years old – will be 32 in June – and has 1,100 career hits.
He still has a shot at 2,000, but it’s likely going to be tight.
Halo11Fan
He just turned 31 years old and was the best Angel last year. There is nothing to worry about until there is something to worry about.
Meaning one year is an anomaly, two is a trend.
Cosmo2
He’s 31, a typical age for decline, and performing poorly. Owed tons for 5 more years. It’s ok to start to worry a bit.
Halo11Fan
31 is still a little young to worry about being too old.
Lloyd Emerson
For all we know Anthony Rendon is sitting on the couch somewhere playing “Much Too Young to Feel This Damn Old”
Halo11Fan
Could be, but I’m more data driven.
He still has a couple more seasons before i worry about his age. But if he’s injured next year, then I will concede this is a disaster.
Cosmo2
I know everyone THINKS 31 is too early to worry but that is a misconception. The idea that players don’t decline until their mid thirties is a complete misnomer. Seriously, look up the WAR totals for random good players and take note of age 31 seasons and after. It is VERY common for players to go quickly downhill starting at that age. The common perception to the contrary is just wrong.
JoeBrady
I think the misconception is due to the difference between declining, and deep declining. Declining starts at least as early as 30, and maybe earlier. The steep declines start at maybe 32-33.
The Angels problem stems from the fact that they have no respect for the aging process. It isn’t just a decline in skills. It is more injuries, a longer time to recover from those injuries, losing a half-step every year.
Halo11Fan
Third baseman are generally quick and don’t rely on speed. Thirty one is not old.
Come back to me next year if he’s still spends a lot of time on the DL.
Cosmo2
It’s not about coming back next year. No matter what happens with the specifics of Rendon, it will prove neither of our general points. 31 is not old in general, it’s the beginning of old in baseball. Speed doesn’t factor in. I’m talking about hitting. Again, try my experiment looking up hitters and their age 31/32 stats compared to their previous career. You’ll be surprised.
SoCalADRL
Rendon was a terrible signing. Absolute waste of money. Albert 2.0.
BuJoBi
It’s even more common for players to decline around age 30 when they sign a fat contract. I doubt he puts up another 2019 type season ever again, and he becomes a steady 3b not worth the contract. But I hope I am wrong I like Rendon
Halo11Fan
You don’t know much and you keep proving it. Albert netted the Angels millions and millions of dollars Rendon was the Angels best player last year and without Rendon, the Angels have o play someone like Mayfield.
Cap & Crunch
What fan really cares how much Albert made Arte from a Tv deal tho?
Kinda hard to sell that in any forum let alone this one
Rendon is underwater as an opportunity cost, how much is debatable, but being the Angels best player over a 60 game season doesn’t change that in any regard.
He has one of the worst 10 contracts in all of baseball today, it pains me to say that b/c Im a fan of his when healthy.
I would honestly trade him for Hosmer or Aaron Hicks if I could straight up next offseason in anticipation of paying Ohtani money .
Id doubt Preller or Cash would bite tho and before people jump to say how dumb that sounds. look below ………
Rendon 5 yrs -190 left
Hos- 4 yrs -60
Hicks-4yrs- 41 mill
GASoxFan
But did Albert bring in more millions than the angels paid in his salary, payroll taxes, benefits, etc? Because he surely didn’t help them win any hardware.
Rumors2godsears
Schwarber playing first base reminds me of moneyball with Billy Beane just assuming first place is easy for Scott Hatteberg to play.
Robrock30
Luis Guillorme entered last night’s game as a pinch runner for Jeff McNeil who has a bad leg. He then scored the winning run but injured himself running in from 2B. Hartlieb pitched the 9th inning today and couldn’t throw strikes and allowed 3 runs. Can’t make this stuff up LOL Mets
Canosucks
Why Hartlieb and not Tropeano I don’t get it?
Secondly I wonder if guys like Rendon and Lindor who suffer these muscle pulls and strains are as intent on off the field stretching and training programs once they are guaranteed 10 years worth of money?
Robrock30
I am not familiar with Hartlieb who was obviously nervous but it was Mets mismanagement for inserting him in the 9th inning of a close game. They just conceded the Game there and let him hang to embarrass himself.
