Jesse Winker’s return to the Reds lineup was short-lived, as the outfielder left today’s game prior to the bottom of the third inning. Winker went 0-for-2 with two flyouts in his first two plate appearances before re-aggravating the mild intercostal strain that sidelined him for Cincinnati’s previous two games. A previous MRI didn’t reveal any damage, though manager David Bell told reporters (including The Athletic’s C. Trent Rosecrans) that Winker will be re-evaluated prior to tomorrow’s game against the Cubs.
While the Reds are in the thick of the wild card race, the team will surely be careful with one of their top bats to prevent a longer-term injury. Winker has hit .307/.395/.560 with 24 home runs over 481 plate appearances this season, and he entered today’s action as the NL leader in doubles (32) and total bases (235). The Reds are in the midst of a grueling stretch of 29 games over 30 days, so there isn’t any built-in time for Winker to really get a break, and a trip to the injured list might be necessary to fully correct the issue.
More on other injury situations from around baseball…
- Francisco Lindor participated in just about a full range of baseball activities prior to today’s game against the Dodgers, and Mets manager Luis Rojas told reporters (including MLB.com’s Bill Ladson) that Lindor could potentially be activated off the injured list when New York begins its next homestand on August 24. Lindor will travel with the Mets on their road trip and continue to work out, so the club will monitor his progress and then determine whether a minor league rehab assignment is necessary, or if Lindor could return to the active roster without the benefit of any minor league tuneup games. A Grade 2 oblique strain sent Lindor to the IL on July 17, so even a return by that Mets homestand would be a pretty decent turn-around time for the shortstop, given how more severe oblique problems can sometimes linger.
- Zach Eflin (right knee tendinitis) threw a live batting practice session today, while Vince Velasquez (right middle finger blister) and Sam Coonrod (forearm tendinitis) threw live BP sessions yesterday. The Phillies pitchers are at different stages in their recoveries, and Velasquez and Coonrod will each begin minor league rehab assignments on Tuesday. Eflin’s next step could be another simulated session before he starts his own rehab assignment, though the right-hander told NBC Sports’ Jim Salisbury and other reporters that he “felt great” during today’s 28-pitch session.
- The Brewers are almost all the way out of a COVID-19 outbreak on their roster, and two of the remaining sidelined players (Adrian Houser and Jandel Gustave) are nearing returns. As Brewers manager Craig Counsell told The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Todd Rosiak and other reporters, Gustave is working out with the team and Houser is expected to join the club when the Brew Crew begin a series with the Cardinals on Tuesday.

They might as well play it safe with Lindor. Dodgers and Giants about to end the Mets whole season
LordD99
The Mets year of mediocrity when greatness was expected is highlighted by Lindor’s year of mediocrity when greatness was expected. His ten year $345M deal starts next season.
BeforeMcCourt
So you’re saying nothing that happened this year has any impact on how that contract turns out
Canosucks
Now that the Met’s season is effectively over Lindor will come back with no pressure and hit in the remaining meaningless games and crow about it; wait and see.

Metsfan22 furiously Googling “how to backtrack on ridiculous, non-sensical predictions without looking like a total jackass” as we speak.
Dorothy_Mantooth
The deGrom injury looks to be the final nail in the coffin for the Mets. Cookie is nowhere close to his regular self, Walker is hot & cold, Rich Hill is good for 6IP and 3+ ERs while the Mets offense can’t score enough to keep up. Strohman has been very good but he’s not an ace and he doesn’t go deep enough most games to give the bullpen a rest. Is Thor coming back this season or is he all done for 2021? The Mets have to be one of the biggest disappointments of the year. Only the Twins rank ahead of them if you ask me.
Samuel
The NL East is so bad that anything can happen.
When the teams have to play a series against good teams from other divisions they’re lucky to avoid a sweep. They only look competitive when playing each other.
Question – When is the last time an MLB division winner finished with a winning percentage under .500?
gbs42
It’s never happened in a full season (thankfully), though the Rangers were leading the AL West with a losing record in 1994 when the players went on strike and the rest of the season was cancelled.
Gmen777
It really is a shame a team in the NL East is gonna make the playoffs but not one of the Reds or Padres who are definitely better teams
ChipperChop
The reds and the Padres are definitely not better teams than the Braves now that they are getting healthy and after the deadline moves. . Just an FYI the Braves are 22-12 vs the NL Central this season and just won a series against the reds.
VonPurpleHayes
Yea all of this. The Braves have played well since the deadline, and I wouldn’t simply assume their another mediocre NL East team. Phillies and Mets? Sure. Braves seem to have put it together.
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
The Braves are certainly the most complete team in the NL East and they’re my pick to ultimately win the division, but I’m still not sold on them as a real threat in October. They can certainly match up with the top teams on offense, but I still see their pitching depth as a major wildcard relative to the other four probable postseason teams. You can certainly overcome a weaker rotation (the 2015 Royals come to mind) or a shaky bullpen (2019 Nats), but the Braves arguably have both even after adding Rodriguez and hopefully having a healthy/effective Anderson for the playoffs.
Obviously anything can happen once the playoffs start, but I have a hard time imagining the Braves getting past the NLDS barring a pretty major upset.

Didn’t the brewers goto the postseason over the giants with a worse record last season? I remember feeling very confused at the end of the season.

Last years postseason was a mess
gbs42
The Brewers and Giants were both 29-31 last season. Milwaukee won the tie-breaker, which was record within their division.
Isthisserious
You’re absolutely wrong. Considering the Padres and Reds have dealt with injuries themselves. Homerism can be blinding sometimes.
Robrock30
The Mets embarrassed themselves last night. Arod called them out all night long. Rojas not pinch hitting for Carrasco in the bottom of the 2nd after pitching two horrible innings only to sacrifice bunt runners to 2nd & 3B with 2 outs and then come up empty. LOL Then he replaces Carrasco in the top of the 3rd inning. LOL x 10. Sandy Alderson needs to be gone like the President of Afghanistan. LOL

JoeBrady
That’s just an awful move. If you want to save the BP, and give up the game, then I’m fine with leaving your SP in for 100 pitches Sometimes losing 14-4 doesn’t mean as much as preserving your BP.
But down 6-0, with two on, and you play for one run, and replace your SP anyway, is about as bad as it gets.
VonPurpleHayes
I mean we say that, but the Braves are now 8 games over .500. If the Braves keep up this pace, they won’t be too far away from other division winners. And keep in mind up until the Nats just got rid of their entire team, there was no real bottom feeder in the NLE. The Marlins aren’t an easy win within the division. The NLE doesn’t have the Orioles, or Pirates, or Diamondbacks to feed on. I really don’t think the Braves are as bad as people think.
MetsFan22
Just a friendly reminder… the Cubs were 7-0 against the Mets in 2015 just to get embarrassed in the playoffs… I’m not scared of the dodgers at all… they’ll lose in the playoffs… Braves are chokers too.. Mets should be in first by the end of the year.
Faith in the Padres
Man. You’re not going to be able to show your face around here if you keep this up. Trust me I get having faith in your team and hoping for good things to happen but you’re taking it to whole new levels. No need to cry over the Braves n Dodgers owning the Mets.
MetsFan22
The Braves owning???
SalaryCapMyth
If I asked you why you believe the Dodgers and Braves are chokers, you would probably go down a recent history of choking. Okay, fare enough.
If I went down a recent history of the Mets, what conclusion would I come too? That the Mets are just perennial disappointers?
fox471 Dave
What are you, 12? Mets are fighting to finish third in a weak division.
Gmen777
Even if you make the playoffs the Brewers are gonna seeep you in three games
MetsFan22
Brewers??? Lol
mlb1225
Brewers have 3 guys with an ERA under 2.50, a deadly 1-2 punch of Josh Hader, Devin Williams, and Brent Suter and Brad Boxberger are having great seasons. Not to mention that all of Brett Anderson, Adrian Houser, and Eric Lauer are quality options. Without deGrom, that Mets’ pitching staff is really lacking. Stroman has been good and Megill has been solid, but Walker has a 5.11 ERA since June, and deGrom is still TBD. Bullpen is still solid, but that Brewers’ pitching staff has twice as much depth
Joe It All
You keep saying you’re not scared of the Dodgers, Braves, Phillies and other teams but in reality we know the only team you’re scared of is the Mets not playing up to the unrealistic expectations you had for them. In your mind they’re the 27’ Yankees or the Big Red Machine. They have some nice players but you’ve set yourself up for disappointment with what you expected them to be.
bucketbrew35
Well you don’t have to worry about that at all since the Mets won’t make the playoffs.
VonPurpleHayes
“I’m not scared of the dodgers at all…” They just swept the Mets…in Citifield. Sometimes it’s smart to be scared of things.
Gmen777
Now they get to fly west and face the Giants and then the Dodgers again, MetsFan22 is about to get humbled real quick
RobM
The Mets are being humiliated in their home park by the Dodgers. That was one of the Mets few strengths this year — overplaying their capabilities in their home park, yet here they are being swept. I do appreciate the unintentional humor you provide. : -)
BeforeMcCourt
Bro they needed multiple position players pitching to get out of a single inning against LA it got so bad tonight.
What will you say if the Mets are suddenly 7-10 back by next week? Lmao
AshamedMethGoat
So, Mets just got swept on their home field by a Dodgers team missing three-fifths of its starting rotation, several bullpen pieces, and its right-fielder who is also a top-5 player in the game…But Mets22Fan isn’t worried and thinks that the Dodgers will choke in the playoffs and that his Mets are a better team anyway.
I am now convinced that Mets22Fan must be a troll account used by MLBTR to drum up comment activity, because there’s no other explanation for such irrational takes to be shared publicly.
willymayshayse
Irrational? Kinda like calling the Dodgers IL 4 of the top 5 players in the game?
So to your mind……Mike Trout…….then the entire IL of the Dodgers make up all of the faces of the game that need to be seen?
Otani……doesn’t qualify. Nor does, Betts, Degrom, or Harper. Castellanos, and Winker? Nothing, by your measure. Not one single Padre worth watching, according to you. What about rookies like India and Garcia? Nothing to see there…..
Perhaps you should stop reading headlines and actually WATCH a few FULL games, not just the post game highlight wrap up. Understand the game so you don’t make comments that show your limited knowledge of the game.
Samuel
For those over 20…..
Remember how nice it used to be when a fan could follow their MLB team and their opponents without having to keep a spreadsheet of who was on the roster that day, and how guys on the IL were progressing?
Lucky touchy-feely MLB mandated minimal contact between players of opposing teams (although players are free to run into players on their team) and MLB has been made into a non-offensive, non-contact, politically correct sport.
Recent rumors suggest that players sweating will be outlawed (offensive to many viewers) and that if a players uniform gets dirty he must change into a clean one at the end of the half-inning. The Commissioners office will be soliciting other suggestions to further improve the sport.
lemonlyman
Haha?
Remember how nice it used to be when people quit complaining so much? Remember how nice it used to be when men spent time with their families at night instead of commenting on message boards to strangers? Those were the days, when men were men. Now they’re just a bunch of whiny, cranky, self-centered know-it-alls who think they’ve figured out the solution to all the world’s problems. Thanks for sharing, Sam. Get back to us when you got a solution.

Other than a tag out, what part of baseball – per the rules – is supposed to be a contact sport?
willymayshayse
Did you even play little league? What part is a contact sport? WHAT PART ISN’T?
Batting? Possible contact…..
Running bases? Possible contact……
Fielding? Possible contact……..
Pitching? Throw too many up and in and see if there isn’t contact
Your comment only shows that you should not have commented at all.

I bet Winker plays on Wednesday guy’s a beast. That might be my favorite lineup in all of baseball. From India to Barnhart it’s no joke. Imagine if they could have added a couple of big arms at the deadline?
DarkSide830
yeah, it’s scary. glad we werent swept by em.
Gmen777
Reds offense is definitely playoff legit, it’s their pitching that will be their undoing
ctrenkamp
No. The manager is our downfall.
Joe It All
As a Reds fan, I love their lineup. One advantage they have on most teams is both their catchers can hit. They don’t miss a beat whether it’s Barnhart or Stephenson behind the plate. Jonathan India should lock up ROY barring disaster or a freak injury that takes him out for an extended period of time. Votto has put himself in position for a chance at MVP and he’s missed a month (Same goes for Tatis) and Castellanos and Winker have both had amazing seasons. It’s been a fun season to be a Reds fan. Hoping they can grab that second wild card but if they come up short, I’ll still be happy with what they did on the field this year.
AaronAngst
Votto as MVP is not going to happen. He went on a homer binge for a minute. People look at WAR now days, and the only place his 2.1 WAR would be talked about as MVP caliber would be Cincinnati.
stymeedone
WAR is an individual assessment. It should merit consideration for Player of the Year. Unless your talking fantasy leagues though, there should be other considerations for MVP. If you helped your team to a third place finish, MVP should not be mentioned with your name. They could finish out of the playoffs without you. That means you were not very valuable. Ohtani is having a great season. The Angels could have missed the playoffs whether he was on the team or not. Player of the Year? Absolutely! MVP shouldn’t even be a consideration.
AaronAngst
I wasn’t making a judgment as to whether factoring WAR into the equation was either right or wrong, but the simple fact is voters are looking at it. Recent results bear that out. Also, the Reds performance on the season is another reason why Votto won’t get any national consideration – he’s helping to lead a team that won’t even put up the best record in their own division, let alone league. There will be more deserving players on the three to five teams that finish with a better record.
gocincy
Our roster is fun. They seem to enjoy playing with each other, which makes them even more fun to watch. The bullpen will be their undoing. If they had an average bullpen, they’d be ahead of the Padres. But that’s not reality as we know it. We should enjoy this team beating expectations, having fun, and hanging in the playoff race longer than most anyone expected
oebrr00
The Mets suck. Like really bad. Congrats on the new owner.

How is it that the ‘bench mob’ was able to have the Mets solidly in first place the entire first half, even while playing against top of the heap teams?
Yes, deGrom was 20% of that equation. But the hitters were also scoring runs, too. I didn’t think it would be true, but the tacky substance ban seems to have wiped out this staff, outside of Stroman.
-Everybody in their common sense mind knew that Walker was going to hit a wall after pitching so little the past three years.
-Carrasco, missing half the year, shouldn’t have been counted on for anything.
-Stroman is a very good #3.
-WAY too many games were sacrificed with starting pitchers like Eickhoff, bullpen games, Peterson (when he was obviously out of whack), Lucchesi was only decent when he had his glue in his glove and so on.
-Syndergaard should have been assumed to be available for zero innings, and plan accordingly.
-Jake needed to reign in his velocity and pitch to some 96 mph ground balls. He threw ONE curve ball this year. Throwing all those 102 fastballs along with all those sliders worked out well. An ace pitcher is useless sitting on the bench for half the season. Look at Scherzer. That’s a smart pitcher who knows how to get himself through 30 starts.
-The front office has failed horribly to address known team needs as these injuries mounted. The Mets haven’t had an opportunity like this in a LONG time (5-8 games over with every other team under .500) and should have pushed to bolster their roster, not sit back and wait (hope) for players to get healthy.
-The entire training staff, philosophy, application and players’ efforts to get ready really needs to be addressed. Year after year, this team is decimated by non contact, soft tissue injuries.
-Firing the hitting instructor that mentored all our young hitters, driving them to homerun titles (Alonso), looking like batting title contenders (McNeil), experienced career years (Conforto, Smith), improved and adjusted with every at bat (Nimmo, Davis), who actually knew HOW to hit and what goes on in a player’s mind during a long season, replacing him with data assessing, binder toting librarians telling the manager who should and shouldn’t play based on ‘the binder’ who couldn’t get out of A ball? Every single home grown hitter has essentially FAILED under the new ‘thinking’ system of hitting. Whoever decided to replace Chili Davis needs lose his job immediately.
The bottom line is that the front office, just like every fan, saw what was happening during the first half. With a few aggressive additions early during the trade period, the Mets could have put BOTH the Phils and Braves into sell mode instead of buy mode. Not adding two starting pitchers and a veteran closer was just incompetent. Carrasco and Syndergaard (IF he ever puts on a jersey) should have bolstered the bullpen instead of counted on to start. We have needed TWO more healthy front line rental starters since day one, knowing Walker’s innings were going to need to be managed and after losing Peterson along with Lucchesi who were only #4 and #5, but were depth. Only adding a forty one year old #5 and a #5 cast off were media moves. Rich Hill and Trevor Williams would have been great pick ups ALONG WITH two other starters. I say this because Stroman, Walker and Megill aren’t going to carry us through any post season series.
McCann has proven terrible in two areas: pitch framing and blocking pitches. I honestly didn’t think we could get worse than Ramos defensively, but he is terrible. His pitch blocking mechanics are non existent with runners on base and his pitch framing is lazy, often just swiping at pitches on corners, IN the strike zone. He doesn’t even give the umpire a look at the pitch. Nido is a better receiver of pitches.
-Without looking up the stats, this team has to be near the bottom in run production against opposing starting pitchers. How can you have 4 days to prepare for a starter and have no idea what he’s throwing? Just what ARE these pitching coaches preparing for the hitters?
-Rojas. If there is a positive, it’s that his players are still giving great effort. But to be honest, they all did that BEFORE he named manager. Yes, you can only put a lineup together with what you have available, but why keep struggling players at the top of the lineup? Lindor and his ego should have been hitting 7th. McNeil should be on the bench. Alonso needs a kick in the ass and told to get aggressive. Conforto and Smith both look better against lefties. Villar and Pillar are the only two hitters who don’t seem to be afraid to swing the bat. Nimmo needs to ambush some pitches and act like a guy capable of 20 homers/40 doubles. McNeil needs to make his career saving adjustment because that big bat wrap around his head and funky stance isn’t benefitting him anymore. He’s never got any pitch barreled up. Pete still can’t touch the up and in strike. So either lay off it or make a stance adjustment to get it. Not being able to hit with runners in scoring position all season long? That’s a thought process that needs to be changed. Somebody has to WANT to be the hero. The only hitter who looks like he wants to drive someone in is Villar. He’s in the lineup every day right now, hit him 4th or 5th. Heck, hit him anywhere in the top 5. Rojas doesn’t seem to understand lineup mechanics at all.
Hot players sit, cold players get more at bats, positive split players sit, pitchers left in too long or pulled with 75/80 pitches when pitching well, using 6 bullpen arms every game, using Diaz in non save situations and Familia when the game is on the line. Not letting relief pitchers go more than one inning following an easy inning but expecting them to be effective three days in a row or after 35 pitch innings. Trevor May is terrible in tight spots and prone to home runs. Lugo is hot or cold. When he’s hot, let him go more than one inning. Drew Smith has been great in covering innings when the team is behind, but not in hold situations. All these reasons are why WE needed a Kimbrel, Rodríguez, Holland type of veteran closer addition.
So much this front office could have done to insure this team’s lead coming into this west coast challenge. I said many times: we just need to play .500 ball in the second half. Instead, we lost series to the Pirates and Marlins and got swept by the Phils and Dodgers. Just terrible.
VonPurpleHayes
RE: The hitting coach, the Mets struggled with RISP under Chili Davis. They were near the bottom of the league in 2020 as well. It’s an ongoing issue with the core players. So I honestly understand why he was fired (even though I like him), but it seems the new hitting coach didn’t improve anything either. The Mets hitters are pretty stubborn and tend to swing for the fences. They have the fewest amount of doubles in baseball which is amazing, because Citifield is a pitchers park, and while it’s tough to hit homers, it is conducive to extra base hits. The Mets just swing for the fences way too much.

Dang this is one of the longest comments I’ve see
JoeBrady
Most of the rotation went south at the same time.
* DeGrom is an absolute beast. Hopefully he returns in time to help my fantasy teams.
* It’s possible that Walker could’ve been anticipated. He hasn’t had anything close to this level of IPs since 2017.
* Not much you can do about Carrasco but hope he turns it around.
* It’s possible that Syndergaard was rushed.
* I’m not sure why they thought that Hill was an answer. He had a 5.40 in his last 7 starts with TB, and was a prime sticky stuff candidate. Without the big curve, the 88 mph FB doesn’t work.
* The Baez trade was strange. It was just enough talent to cause them to give up a good prospect, but not good enough to turn their season around. And now, it appears that Lindor might be back in a week+. So, even disregarding the injury, you traded a good prospect for someone that will be forced to play a new position after only four weeks with the team.
Bob333
First they have a Sucky Mgr and will never win with the hitters they have oh sound familiar just like the Phillies. Both teams the players are very overated. Both owners only heard from when winning.

So Syndergaard pitches a simulated inning against Francisco Lindor (and Luis Guillorme) and MLBtr doesn’t report it. Why not.
