Rhys Hoskins isn’t expected to come off the injured list when first eligible, per Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia. The minimum 10-day stint will have elapsed by Tuesday, but Hoskins still hasn’t tested his injured groin by running. The first baseman just received a cortisone injection to try and aid his recovery and is still aiming to be activated at some point this week. Every game is crucial for the Phillies as they are in the thick of a three-team race for the AL East crown. They are currently tied with Atlanta for the top spot, with the Mets just 1 1/2 games behind. Hoskins is having another fine season at the plate, slashing .244/.332/.509, which is 23% better than league average by wRC+.
Salisbury also notes that Freddy Galvis has started taking batting practice and is progressing towards a rehab stint. The infielder was on the injured list with a quad strain when the Orioles traded him to the Phillies before the deadline. Before getting hurt, he was slashing .249/.306/.414. That amounts to a wRC+ of 97, which is below league average but a career high for Galvis. Despite never being a huge offensive threat, he’s long been a valuable contributor because of his excellent glovework.
Other notes from around the league…
- Matthew Boyd is rehabbing and hoping to return before the end of August, reports Chris McCosky of The Detroit News. The lefty was placed on the IL in mid-June with a triceps issue but now potentially a few weeks away from returning. Boyd has a year of team control remaining before reaching free agency and figures to be an important part of the Tigers’ 2022 rotation as they look to move from rebuilding to contending. If he stays on track with his rehab, he could get more than a month’s worth of work in before the offseason. Prior to the injury, Boyd had an ERA of 3.44 on the year through 70 2/3 innings.
- Neither Wade LeBlanc nor Kwang Hyun Kim are expected to come off the IL as soon as they are eligible, according to Cardinals manager Mike Shildt, per Jeff Jones of MLB.com. Kim, who has a 3.36 ERA in 91 innings this season, has been out since August 9th with elbow inflammation. LeBlanc, who also is dealing with an elbow issue, has an ERA of 3.61 in 42 1/3 innings for St. Louis this year. However, the rotation just welcomed Jack Flaherty back into the fold and could soon see a return of Miles Mikolas, who is currently on a rehab assignment. The club is currently 4 1/2 games behind a slumping Padres club for the final NL playoff spot, but with three teams in between them.

I’m sure glad the Phillies aren’t in the AL East. Whew.

So is the AL East

Makes no sense
Inside Out
Why? You another one of those?

Bohm defense is putting him on the bench. When Galvis returns it’s going to be even harder for Bohm to get into the lineup.
bucketbrew35
I was just thinking that Bohm might be sent to the minors upon Freddy’s return.
DarkSide830
i dont know why Bohm is suddenly in the doghouse. he was hitting decently when Joe stopped starting him. since then he’s done nothing at the plate.
VonPurpleHayes
It’s his fielding. His 1-day stint at 1B was an absolute disaster. At least that shut up the fans who want to trade Hoskins and keep Bohm at 1B. Bohm has a real solid bat when he gets going, but it’s hard to justify starting a guy with 16 errors.
VonPurpleHayes
Hoskins bat has really been missed of late. Need him back and healthy for the stretch run.
Virginiaphilliesfan
Add Bohm to the same list as Spencer Howard, Moniak, Nola, Maton and Sixto Sanchez as highly touted players who just never developed.
What happened to the Phillies ability to turn out home grown players like Ryan Howard, Rollins and Utley?
VonPurpleHayes
Nola hasn’t developed? Despite the up and down year this season, he’s one of the better pitchers in the NL. That’s definitely a win for the Phils. The other guys mentioned are all young enough to turn into solid players.
mlb1225
I don’t think you can add Howard, Sanchez, Bohm, or especially Nola to that list yet. Nola has been pretty decent. Howard and Sanchez haven’t even tossed 100 innings yet, combined. Bohm is the closest among that group that you could call a bust.
JerryBird
This is frustrating for a Cardinal fan. They sat on their hands at the trade deadline. Acquired two old and tired starters, who have provided only diddly doo. They are only 4½ back in the wild card. WTF Cardinals? I thought the overall goal was to make the playoffs. Mo sucks.
rocknwell
Yeah it’s a bummer. When I thought about it though, they really didn’t have a lot to trade from. They have only a few prospects that are worth much of a return and it would be irresponsible to trade them. And none of the 25 roster players would have been worth a whole lot either. So what could they have done that made sense? Of course I have no idea but that logic makes sense to me. Sucks to see DeJong sucking so much at the plate and all the walks. What the heck is up with that?
VonPurpleHayes
4 and a half is a lot more than it seems when you take into account all the teams in the hunt. The Cards were not good enough to warrant trading prospects for minor pieces. I think the Cards made the right moves showing patience.
hollidayfever
They were getting guys who projected to be better or as good as their depth options who would also be strike throwers comparatively speaking, which has proven to be the case so far. Lester looks crappy, but so did our farm options. Happ has looked great tbh. Leblanc also had been great. Those were net upgrades and we gave up nothing. They’re not selling out for the future for a non-contending team at this point. That’s a fool’s errand.
CujoMarlin
I understand, but I think you have to give credit for the moves that were made – the upgrades just weren’t there for the prospects they were willing to trade – replacing Oveido and Woodford with Happ and Lester are working out as a stopgap until Flaherty and Mikolas are back and now with LeBlanc and Kim’s injury, they’re still gonna need one of those two for the stretch. This season’s struggle has really been about getting the offense and bullpen to play up to their potential in light of a lot of injuries. The rotation has done well even with the injuries, but Oviedo and Woodford aren’t dependable for a stretch run. Lester and Happ are a big upgrade and thus far they’ve proven it. I was hoping for Flaherty, Wainwright, Mikolas, Kim and Happ for the stretch, but now Kim is hurt. Yes, we would love Scherzer, but the prospect load was too much for that. Maybe we’ll get him in free agency.
hollidayfever
Happ’s projections rest of the season are surprisingly decent.

Even when Hoskins come off IL, Miller should get the bulk of the playing time. I can’t understand why everybody loves this guy. He should be shipped out of Philly before Ben Simmons is.
VonPurpleHayes
Miller has been pretty bad in the last few series. Hoskins numbers, as pointed out in this article, are way above league average. He’s super underrated in Philly. Bad defender? Sure, but when he gets on fire, he’s one of the best hitters in the league.
gwaid44
Bohm’s defense was a problem at 3B that was a disaster at 1B, and with Torreyes playing very well, there’s just not the ability to risk errors. Long term Philliew, The Philliew may need to move him to LF , unless of course the DH is universal,or they will need to make decision between Bohm and Rhys.
greatgame 2
LeBlanc is done

@vonpurplehays
Uh, Nola is 7-7 with an ERA of 4.48 – that’s developing? For a guy in the Cy Young chase two years ago?
whosehighpitch
Nola should be out the door there too. H e is like a cheat code in a video game.
VonPurpleHayes
@Virgininaphilliesfan He’s having a bad year. I don’t take 1 bad year to judge an entire career. Even this year he had some brilliant starts. Either way, taken everything he’s giving the Phillies so far, you absolutely cannot call him a bust. He’s played well on the major league level. This year he’s struggling to find consistency. That doesn’t mean you throw him out the door. He’s one of the most talented pitchers in the NL. Whether he returns to ace form or settles into a nice #2 role, he’s not a bust by any means.
Virginiaphilliesfan
However, I believe your comment was that he is continuing to develop – when, obviously, he is tracking downward from his previous peak year. While not yet in the Scott Kingery mold, his inconsistency is bewildering and he is now probably looked at as number 3 in the rotation.
VonPurpleHayes
I didn’t say he’s continuing to develop. The original comment talked about the Phillies failing to develop prospects and Nola was included in that list. I said “Nola hasn’t developed?”
He’s already produced on the major league level. So it I don’t understand how he can be included on that list. Has he regressed this year? Sure, but he’s still producing at a major league level. Phillies fan are too quick to give up on people. They expect perfection immediately and consistently.
