Two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo has joined the Brewers’ ownership group, the team announced. (Jeff Passan of ESPN reported the news shortly before the official announcement).
Antetokounmpo becomes the third superstar from a different professional sports league to purchase a share in an MLB ownership group. 2018 NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes joined the Royals’ ownership group last July, while four-time NBA MVP LeBron James purchased a stake in the Red Sox this March.
The 26-year-old Antetokounmpo stars for the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, whom he led to their first championship in fifty years this season. According to the Brewers, Antetokounmpo is the first individual brought into the ownership group since majority owner Mark Attanasio bought the franchise in 2005.
Suns in 6! Suns in 6! Oh wait…
Great guy, Brewers going nowhere but up
He didn’t pay anything for anything, it’s a nice PR move, means absolutely nothing else.
Lebron owns part of the Red Sox….haha what a joke. I’m sure they just love Lebron over there in Boston…..at least Giannis is likeable.
Both are likable.
Next up for the Brewers is to sell a fraction of a share to Bucks draftee Sandro”Mamukelashvili. Bucks fans better learn how to spell and pronounce his name. Four years watching him at Seton Hall and I still can’t do it.
Giannis is very likable. Lebron is an insecure whiner.
Also, those other two guys bought sake in teams for cities they play for. Lebron plays for the lakers and bought sake in Boston. All while claiming to be a Yankees fans.
Basically, my problem with Lebron is that he never played for the Knicks. So I benefited not at all from him.
His dominance (along with the Knicks overall ineptitude) was a big part of why I no longer care for the NBA.
Which – in the end – I am grateful for.
likeable? one of the dirtiest player in the league?
Ha! Dirty?! How so? Dude is an inspiration. What’s the one play that you saw that makes you think that? There’s always some dumb reason people think he’s dirty. Some lame homer comment. Let’s hear it.
LeBron is as likable as a raging case of herpes.
You have a lot of bad takes, but saying Lebron is likeable may be your worst one yet
What’s not to like? He’s been good at everything he’s tried and isn’t afraid to speak out on the right things. Does he scare you in some way?
So anyone you don’t like scares you? That’s a stupid thing to say. There’s plenty of reasons to not like him. He’s a sore loser. He quit on Cleveland the first time around and stormed off the court in Boston. I actually don’t like his politics at all, and wish he’d shut up about it. The whole “decision” thing was obnoxious. I was living in Cleveland at the time and people everywhere we’re heart broken and burning his jerseys in the street. He came back and had them overpay love and drove out Kyrie just to leave them again. He always has to have a super team around him or else he pouts and threatens to leave. He always has to have special perks and have teams kiss his ass and let his whole entourage do what they want. He has no charisma. He tried pathetically to hide his bald spot. He proclaimed that he’s the best all time, which is arrogant as well as wrong. I hate Lebron’s personality
A long winded and circuitous way of saying: “he’s scary”
He tips over and convulses in crippling pain if an opponent looks in his general direction
What is there to like? Do you really think the cockiest flopper in the league who intimidates high school refs to overturn calls that go against his son’s team is of fine moral fiber?
As for his politics, it’s not his fault that league execs and sportscasters put a lot of stock in the things he says, but he’s never shown an understanding of any social or political issue he’s talked about (which is on par with you as well.) Remember his ironic “I don’t think a lot of people was educated” comment the 2016 election? Or his comments on China during the Daryl Morey situation? What about his frequent insta posts of him reading books of which he can’t form a coherent analysis during interviews?
Face it, you arrogant, octogenarian fogey, you only like him because he carries the water for the establishment politicians to which you hopelessly devote yourself.
On the right things? You seriously must be joking? He is the poster child for moron. Time and time again his ‘rigjt things’ are proven to be wrong.
to cey hey; what he just said.
@dumpsterdivingtheo
Does wind go through your brain when you read? No one liked your comment. Because it’s stupid. Congrats on using a big word though. Glad you were able to get that “wind” off your chest.
Cute you and people like you think anything he does scares me. He’s a great basketball player. Great. But as a person he’s socially awkward and insecure. It’s why he needs to call himself the goat. Why he needs to yell for people to give him respect when he manipulates the league and player movement. He’s a fake intellect. It’s why he needs to be photographed “reading” a book. Usually the first couple pages and then can’t speak on what he’s reading when questioned (google his Malcolm X question). It’s when he open his mouth about politics and foreign affairs you just can’t help but cringe. There’s a lot not to like about the him. Being “scared” is not the reason though little guy.
I don’t like LeBron at all.
The big difference with LeBron is that he bought into the Fenway Sports Group, not the Red Sox directly. LeBron was more interested in the Liverpool soccer team (also owned by FSG) than he was with the Red Sox side of the business. I don’t think LeBron has shown up to one Sox game since he became a part owner. He’d probably get booed out of Fenway if he did.
LeBron could teach those booers a thing or two about the business world. No college. No problem. He’s a smart guy.
LeBron is far from a smart dude I’m sorry to say. It really doesn’t take a genius to sign a massive Nike endorsement deal when they come knocking on your door.
Just because he’s made a ton of money off of deals that basically fall into his lap because of his skills on the court doesn’t make him a smart man.
You could spend 10 minutes browsing his Twitter and come to the conclusion he is not bright.
Not hating, just giving an honest assessment. He really hasn’t shown much intelligence.
His political comments about slavery, long dead in the US, yet he endorses a company to have proven to be doing just yet….
Exactly. People taking about social justice meanwhile taking millions from Nike, made on the sweat of cheap Indonesian labor. Outsourced away from USA where workers (all ethnicities) have rights, because those countries can work people like slaves. It’s disgusting to see Kapernic make social justice commercials with Nike. Shoot the next commercial at one of the shoe factories in Vietnam.
He doesn’t speak with proper grammar. We was … they was …
Yup. LeBron’s a smart dude; he knows there’ll be a lot more money with Liverpool than the Sox (not their fault, just the way the industry is going). Lots of growth in soccer over there.
There’s huge money in baseball. Rich business people don’t throw millions away. They give players megabucks because it helps them make more money.
you forgot to mention that Dwyane Wade has ownership with the Utah Jazz!
Who are not yet part of MLB…
I would think that if you have the money, a stake in a major pro sports franchise would be a pretty solid investment. There can’t be many (if any) instances where the value of such a franchise has decreased.
Im pretty sure i remember Bill Maher regretting his minority stake in the Mets, but that may be a special case
You should close the comments on this “story” because no one GAF. Seriously.
So you don’t GAF and therefore nobody does?
I do.
Never seen somebody so wrong on something so inconsequential before. Close the comments on a story where a famous person buys a stake in a professional sports team (hometown team no less) because people “don’t GAF” when they quite obviously do? Lol
You cared enough to take time to comment
“You should close the comments on this “story” because no one GAF. Seriously.”
There are some dumb comments here certainly but yours is actually the dumbest.
The Orioles are waiting for Wilt Chamberlain to make an investment.
Maybe not Wilt but I hear Joba bought a BJ Surhoff shirsey once
Might help the Brewers with PR.
I spend quite a bit of time in WI. Packers gear is ubiquitous. Seeing a lot of Bucks caps etc lately, too.
But despite having a fabulous starting rotation, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of excitement about their “other” team.
They are in the top 10 for attendance, which is pretty good for a small market team. I think there is more excitement than you may be seeing. Packers definitely rule the state though
My bad.
Didn’t realize that.
We have a satellite office just over the border (Hudson). & I do quite a bit of hunting there. But that’s all in pretty rural/off grid places.
Guess I’m not seeing much (any?) excitement there specifically. However, it’s not like I am going to Milwaukee or whatever. Thanks for the gently given correction.
I went to college in Eau Claire (northern Wisconsin) and there was basically no interest in the Brewers/baseball. I live in southeastern Wisconsin and there is a large and devoted following. The greater Milwaukee area is where almost all of the fans are; leave the 5 county area and it’s all Packers.
Ok.
Fair enough. & that tallies with my experience as I don’t spend any time in the SE part of the state.
Interestingly(?); I also spend time in the U.P. So…pretty similar to Northern WI (& MN) but the Tigers are really popular there. No idea what that means though.
That is interesting, I am guessing that the obsession with the Packers comes from them historically having more success. The Brewers have been really good since David Stearns came in, but prior to that you had 2011 and 1981/2.
Cross the border- you must be in Minnehaha. For most of the rest of us who refer to Crossing the border into Wisky, the SE part of the state is where we go most often (it’s just Czechoslavakia!)
Ah.
The “Lions factor”. Hadn’t thought of that.
Being in Hudson explains a lot. My sister in law has been living in Hudson for the last 20 some years and that area has grown a lot, mainly due to Minnesota transplants. Cheaper to live in Wisconsin and drive to the Twin Cities for work. She also can’t get Packers games but can get Vikings and Twins games. Local coverage is mainly Minnesota with a few WI stuff sprinkled in. Its a suburb of the Twin Cities.
I don’t buy that, I live in the 5 county area but know people way out of this area and many many Brewers fans even since I met them in the early 00’s when the team sucked. Bucks fans are all located in southeast WI it seems though. Packers are of course the dominant team in the whole state. But don’t discount statewide Brewers fans.
What don’t you buy? I agree there are plenty of Brewers fans located around the state but at the same time go to Kenosha and Racine and you’ll see more than your share of Cubs/White Sox/Bears hats. Probably in the Beloit area as well. Wisconsin is definitely a football state but Milwaukee is a baseball city.
You’re “up north” though right Ducky? That’s a big part of it right there. I’m in north central WI and Milwaukee is a solid 4-4.5 hours away. Plus the Twins are closer and their TV coverage area pushes quite a ways east. Could be more casual fans up here, but I think a lot of it is just due to distance.
Minneapolis.
But yeah. Definitely spend my time in Northern Wisconsin for the most part.
Good bird hunting. Good trout fishing.
Those folks certainly love their Packers.
If this gets him into the owner’s suite at will, it’s a win-win. He doesn’t have to bother with buying a lesser-situated suite on his own if he was of such a mind.
I don’t know what the Brewers’ suite setup is like, but in my local experience:
1) They’ll want him there
2) He’ll want to be there
3) Pampering like he’s gotten used to
4) Deals only with people of the caliber he’s also gotten used to.
The managing ownership can bring all their pals to meet-greet Giannis whenever, and those contacts are of the elevated type.
Sometimes, the suitemates might even look down upon the action on the field. Not that much, if ever (depending on the person) but he’ll have that option if, again, he is of such a mind.
Win-win.
The owner of the Brewers sits in the first row. No owner suite for him. He wants to be on field.
Wisconsin sports MVP roulette. Rodgers owns a percentage of the Bucks; Giannis a share of the Brew Crew. Maybe Yelich will buy into the Milwaukee Admirals.
Ben Sheets owns part of Admirals. Uecker and Robin Yount own part of Lakeshore Chinooks
Boston doesn’t like people who love the CCP
Um, doesn;t Magic Johnson own a stake in the Dodgers?
LeBron likable? You must have forgot when he tweeted to a Columbus Ohio police officer after a shooting “You’re Next”. When asked about his tweet inciting violence he quickly deleted it. And since LeBron is the true commissioner of the NBA Adam Silver was quiet about it
The police should stop racial profiling. A black neighbor of mine gets that all the time. I was talking to him one day when the same cop passed and stared at him three times. I kindly told the cop(a Liberty University grad, which figures)(to buzz off. Why are some people okay with that nonsense?
File this under: things that never happened.
Why are some people so obsessed with race?
Says the guy who probably never has one of these encounters so it never happens.
@jonny5 Too bad ignorance isn’t painful!
@jonny5 Too bad ignorance isn’t painful!
Obviously you have ZERO knowledge of police work or security. It’s called proactivity. Profiling stops hundreds of thousands of crimes per year. But let’s stop doing that to everyone be side their feelings are hurt…liberals…
Aaron Rodgers owns a share of the Bucks
Good way for Mark to raise a little walking around cash…..
I heard he bought 1/600th of a share of the team. $3500
Pure PR move on behalf of the Brewers, similar to the Nets and Jay-Z or the Dodgers and Magic. Antetokounmpo probably now owns the chairs in front of the Greek gyros stand.
Giannis has been great to Milwaukee. He’s been seen out and about around the city with his family plenty, especially since the championship. He’s out there interacting with fans while attending fairs/festivals amd patronizing local stores and restaurants.
Not that he needed to invest in the Brewers but I feel that it’s an outstanding gesture to show his commitment to the Milwaukee community.
