Yankees catcher Gary Sánchez has tested positive for COVID-19, manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News). He woke up this morning not feeling well and a rapid test came back positive. Rob Brantly is being re-selected to the roster as his replacement.
Sánchez is yet another notable Yankees player to land on the COVID IL. Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery hit the injured list earlier this week, and a few players (including star outfielder Aaron Judge) tested positive immediately after the All-Star Break. One of those players — reliever Wandy Peralta — just made his return from the IL this afternoon. Assuming follow-up testing confirms the positive result, Sánchez will miss at least ten days recuperating, leaving New York to rely upon Kyle Higashioka and Brantly behind the plate.
Brantly was selected as a COVID replacement, so he can be returned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at a later date without being subjected to waivers. He’s already been up as a COVID replacement once this season, appearing in four games.

Rather see Donny Sands called up instead of Brantly even though Sands was promoted from Somerset recently.

Still might be better than Red Sox in the end.

Has that been his problem for the past 4 years?

The Yankees hate vaccinations apparently.

FWIW The Yankees were one of the first teams to reach an 85% vaccination rate.

Just posted the same thing, @Joe.

It’s funny that people don’t understand you can’t get it while vaccinated. And if this was you trying to be funny, it was not.
df08988
You absolutely CAN get the virus if you’re vaccinated. It doesn’t prevent Covid, it just greatly reduces the severity of it.
baseballguy_128
then what is the point of it
Brendan Guttmann
you won’t die
josebatflip
What hole has baseballguy been living in? Vaccines just mean you won’t get seriously ill from a virus. You can still catch and spread something.
jcrinck
Based on this reasoning, why should catchers then wear a cup? If a foul ball or wild pitch hits them in the groin it will still hurt so there’s no reason to wear it.
The fact that there can be degrees of an illness isn’t a difficult concept.

Not dying

Remember last summer when there wasn’t a vaccine and people still survived at over 99% and mostly the old and unhealthy died? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

I really thought Sanchez’s numbers were going to take off this year, but sadly he’ll be taking off the next 10 days.

The Yankees either have just been to Florida or they got all their players injected with the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
josebatflip
Or they think they’re invulnerable because of the vaccine and are therefore partying in groups every night. Just because you’re vaccinated doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still be careful.
Dorothy_Mantooth
The vaccines only have an efficacy rating of 70-85% so they knew there would be cases of Covid amongst those who received the vaccine. If I recall, some teams in MLB opted for the J&J, one dose vaccine which has the lowest rating of them all (70% effectiveness)? Regardless, the vaccine has proven to both slow down the Covid infection rate and for those who are vaccinated and still catch Covid, it has greatly reduced both the symptoms and more importantly the mortality rate versus those who chose not to get vaccinated. All signs point to the vaccine helping in the fight against serious Covid issues and death rates but I believe people have the right to choose whether or not to receive it. Let’s just hope Covid doesn’t come back with a vengeance this fall and we get back to more shutdowns and mask mandates. It would be terrible for the country to have to go through that again.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Agreed with everything you’ve stated.
WarrenSpahn
yes, but “I believe people have the right to choose whether or not to receive it” does not extend to people with jobs that require close proximity to other vulnerable people such as the sick (hospitals), children (schools), elderly (nursing homes, assisted living) and indoor public places. People do not have the “right” to employment when they place others in jeopardy and where a simple jab with the world’s most studied and safest drug ever is freely available.

Since Democrat’s are in charge……
There will be no reason for shutdowns, mask mandates, or panic coming from the media and Democrat run statehouses.
Good to see that in the largest attack on the American people since WWII, that one party decided – and the media elected – to play politics rather than put the people first….you know……the ones that got into politics and went to DC “To Serve”….as they – and their relatives and friends – got rich on taxpayer money.
So while the politicians are patting themselves on the back, do any of you know some names of the real scientists that were literally working 24/7/365 for months? Or the business people that created manufacturing facilities, distribution channels; and the health care workers that did the vaccinations around the country? Meanwhile posters on here are pointing out that the vaccine didn’t eradicate the disease. Shucks, look at all the MLB players and coaches that got it. Of course, not a one died or was so stricken that they lost their health and career. OK, they couldn’t play for some weeks or a month – but all got paid in full. Just continue to point out that he world is not perfect – because you are ENTITLED to sit at a keyboard and demand that others do for you.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Samuel – I’m not sure if your comment was pointed at me, but yes I do know many of the scientists who worked on the vaccine. My wife works for a bio-tech company who actually designed the original vaccine components, so I’m well aware of and really appreciate all of the blood, sweat and tears these people went through creating the vaccine at warp speed. It was an amazing process to see ‘first hand’ (through my wife) and I have all the respect in the world for these people; most of whom worked 18-20 hour days with no increase in pay (they didn’t even ask for it) to do what they could to help fight off this virus. Politics aside, it was amazing what they accomplished, and they’re not close to being done yet either.
tedtheodorelogan
I live in the very liberal SF Bay Area. Over 70% of eligible people have been vaccinated. Our health officer overlords just reinstated the mask mandate on Tuesday. The county where I work has a 7 day rolling death count of zero. The people ending up in the hospital are almost exclusively the unvaccinated. Yet here we are, covering our faces to go grocery shopping over a virus that over 99 percent of people survive, regardless of whether or not they are vaccinated. We gave these health officers an inch and they took 1000 miles.
TalkSomeSense
The danger of having a large population of unvaccinated is having a variant emerge that 1- Has a much higher RO 2- Higher fatality Rate 3- Resistant to current Vaccines.

Are other teams getting hit like this – or is the Red Sox curse just doin what it do?

So much ignorance in this thread. I don’t care if you are/get vaccinated or not but do a favor for yourself, people you care about, and fellow neighbors and educate yourself about Covid from a reliable source which doesn’t have a vested interest in pushing an agenda.

Brantly gives them at least a little roster flexibility since he can also play some 1b. But, I imagine that he will not be seeing much playing time in the next 10 days. Higashioka’s time to shine. #next man up
YankeesBleacherCreature
If Brantly is playing 1B, something has gone horribly wrong since DJL can play there. Go Higgy!
sascoach2003
I know, no doubts there. I was actually just trying to take the focus off the “vaccine/no vaccine ” debate that the thread fell into, and bring it back to actual baseball. I did have to laugh though because Brantly played 1B the entire game at SWB his last night there, because Sands bat has been hot.

actually all of em nearly are. Shows the vaccination is just another game the government wants to play. Remember… The CDC backed up the Tuskegee Experiment too.
