The Dodgers activated Mookie Betts from the injured list and recalled Darien Nunez. In terms of the corresponding moves, Gavin Lux and Matt Beaty were optioned to Triple-A, per The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya (via Twitter).
These moves are at least in part due to yesterday’s marathon 16-inning game (though Betts, of course, would return no matter the circumstances). Nunez can provide a fresh arm to a busy bullpen. The southpaw has logged 7 1/3 innings with the Dodgers over six outings while being tagged for three home runs and eight runs total (seven earned). He’s been solid in the minors, however, with a 2.29 ERA in 39 1/3 innings.
More curious here are the demotions of Lux and Beaty. With the acquisition of Trea Turner, there simply aren’t many at-bats left for Lux and Beaty – not with Justin Turner, Corey Seager, Chris Taylor, and Max Muncy all expecting regular playing time as well. Both Lux and Beaty will benefit from consistent playing time in Triple-A. After all, Lux has had just one plate appearance in the past week; Beaty has been used regularly as a pinch-hitter, but he’s started just two games in August.

Talk about trashing any trade value that Lix still has… not to mention confidence.
Oh well.
ShootyBabbit
Gotta keep a lot of AB’s free for Mr. Pujols
Deadguy
700 baby, that man has to get 700 and if you don’t want him on the dodgers cause he’s wrecking your playoff odds we will take him here in St Louis.
BlueSkies_LA
They don’t care if they aren’t trading him and especially now because they can’t trade him anyway.
It also makes no sense to talk about Beaty the bench guy having started only two games this month. He’s appeared in the vast majority of games. That’s the role of a bench guy. The only reason to option him now is to make room for another relief arm after a 16-inning game. He’ll be back in a few days.
kevincwilson
Totally agree. I bet Beaty doesn’t even leave the Dodgers, he’ll hang out in the dugout until they “call him back up”
davidk1979
He’s not gonna play either way and sitting for Trea Turner crushed his value? Lol
amk1920
No regrets keeping Lux. Dodgers were just fine without the Pirates RP who is doing time or Lindor and his awful contract.
mikefults
How does this comment make any sense?
stevewpants
The comments on this site are supposed to make sense?
cecildawg
Lots of ways mike. History really is with us today.
amk1920
Lindor and Vazquez were the players that Lux was involved in rumors for. It’s really not that hard to follow, Mike
Ghost of past pirates
typical idiotic comment from a moron. also so much for the future hall of famer lux
amk1920
Of course a Pirates fan. Someone is mad Friedman didn’t cave to Neil Huntingtons ridiculous demands for a relief pitcher. Enjoy the everlasting rebuild.
JoeBrady
If Lux’ sub-.600 OPS over the past three months hasn’t trashed his confidence, I doubt another trip thru the minors will.
yankees2016rebuild
So lux is officially a bust right dodger fans.
ElysianPark
He doesn’t even have a full season’s worth of plate appearances. It is too early to give up on him. Someone his age would typically be in AA/AAA.
@dodgers_2021
It’s politics. He has options. He still
Has value. We needed an extra picture
dodger1958
Trea is locked in next year.
Deleted User
I don’t think the Dodgers plan on trading Lux any time soon. He is going to have an opportunity to win the 2B spot next year (or at least a shot to play v RHP). If being sent to down to AAA to get regular ABs when you can’t help the club right now is going to “Trash his confidence” he is pretty weak mentally and probably wouldn’t have figured it out anyway.
cecildawg
Steve? You are heard loud and clear. He, Lux, SHOULD shave his face and head.
Gotta be humble before the ballball gawgs.
jagonza
When is belly going down ??
amjr
Exactly. Apparently the Dodgers value his pop ups and strike outs. He’s a rally killer. I rather have the pitcher come to bat than him.
paddyo furnichuh
He’s been putting competitive ABs together recently(though not consistently). Along with his elite defense(only in the OF this year though) and his career accomplishments it’s easy to see why he’s still at the big league level.
Notice the qualifiers I added. It seems like with his long swing, he’s always have plenty of whiffs and pop-ups.
It would be nice if he shortened his swing a bit and more line drives and putting the ball in play up the middle.
tstats
He had a GOOD hitters hit last night
Bleedsblue81
Apparently there’s a clause in bellis contract that states he can’t be sent down. The Dodgers really handcuffed themselves on that one
BeforeMcCourt
aside from Mookie there’s no one with higher potential to impact a short series more than Bellinger when he’s right on offense, because of his already elite defense
They have every reason in the world to try to get him right for October
@dodgers_2021
I agree. He robbed home runs against the Padres last years playoffs and homered in the nlcs. He can be a game changer.
gbs42
Bleedsblue81 – Where did you read/hear about that clause in Bellinger’s contract? I couldn’t find anything about it.
mikefults
Because there isn’t. BeforeMcCourt recently wandered off a troll farm.
Bleedsblue81
Orel and Joe Davis said this the other day, thus I said apparently
BeforeMcCourt
How about you bash the correct person?
I said nothing about Bellinger’s contract
bkbkbkbk
Not an actually thing
bucincharlotte
Trade him to the Pirates and include Ruiz so the Pirates rid the Dodgers of the contract.
Ya'll a bunch of salty crybabies
Ruiz isn’t a Dodger any longer…….
802Ghost
Damn, I didn’t realize he was batting below .200, and significantly at that.
Kewldood69
Roberts loves Beaty; surprised they actually made the right move and sent him down. Lux is a flash in the pan.
BlueSkies_LA
I didn’t know Beaty and Doc were romantically involved. The things you can learn here. Well most managers would love to have this on the bench:
.262/.358/.374/.732
So maybe it’s true after all.
deano 2
The thing I don’t get is playing McKinney,
a lefty over Beatty? McKinney barely over .200.
empirejim
McKinney has come up huge lately, and he plays excellent outfield D. Beaty is solid at 1st, but always looks shaky in the OF. Both solid depth, but only room for one until the next IL placement.
bravesfan
Beaty is definitely a bit puzzling to send down. I expect him back up ASAP
Jean Matrac
I think Nunez is only up temporarily. He’s there to give the bullpen another arm after the extra use it got. Lux or Beaty will be back soon.
Since the moves were also to make room for Betts, I think that means Lux being recalled once the pen gets a little rest. That is, unless they think Lux needs to work on his hitting, which wouldn’t surprise me either.
amjr
I would have sent down Bellinger! I’m tired of him taking a spot on the lineup and killing rallies.
fox471 Dave
Amjr, you keep saying the same thing and we keep saying he is great on defense. Circular firing squad anyone?
amjr
And I will keep saying it until he effing hits!
cecildawg
amjr? no need brah. want your milk warmed?
GarryHarris
Rules are messed up to send Lux and Beatty down without consequences.
gbs42
What consequences should there be?
BeforeMcCourt
Why would there be a consequence for deciding a 23 year old would benefit from consistent at bats instead of 1 per week?
tstats
The consequence is you don’t have them on the roster
Louholtz22
Yelich was Bellinger for most of this year til recently. Rally killing and weak contact. With the Dodgers all star lineup, they can afford to be patient. Not to mention their winning a lot of games and prolly will catch the Giants
Datashark
Lux has not panned out, he needs to some confidence and work on this bat to match up against MLB style pitching. Beaty so far looks decent and maybe benefit from consistent ABs, but I dont see him succeeding in the KIKI or Taylor role of moving around the field with inconsistent ABs.
OCTraveler
Lux will start as soon as J Turner’s time is finished in LA or if Seager is not resigned. The Dodgers’ depth for position players has never been better.
Yep it is
Doesn’t the minor leagues end next week?
Stop Giving Billionaires Money
Thank you for pointing this out.
All the dramatic comments and these guys will be back up when rosters expand at the latest.
Friedman has been send down and bringing guys up like yo-yos anyways.
JoelReagan
They extended the minor league season through early October this year.
Bi Soxual
Lux is Hot garbage.Eye test always said Verdugo was the baller when they both were getting some time in LA
bkbkbkbk
I wish the Angels sent Igelsis and Rengfio for Lux
Stop Giving Billionaires Money
I actually think Lux for McKenzie Gore makes sense but I bet both fan bases will disagree with me.
bucincharlotte
You will have to include Ruiz and Betts to get Gore and pay half of Betts contract
Ya'll a bunch of salty crybabies
Again, Ruiz was traded for Turner/Scherzer
ElysianPark
Uh, right…like Betts would be traded for a struggling prospect….to a division contender, no less…….
Ruiz was traded for Scherzer.
Stop Giving Billionaires Money
Gore is broken, no one is giving up anything of value except another change of scenery guy.
That’s one of the reasons I suggested lux, because they are same same, different positions but similar circumstances.
ElysianPark
There is NO way SD and the Dodgers exchange prospects.
Stop Giving Billionaires Money
Probably not but Preller and Friedman did swap Grandal and prospects for Matt Kemp and cash
foyposn
Send Bellinger with them.
bklynphil
Is Mitch White back on major league roster?
@dodgers_2021
I think they sent him down and had to stay down for ten days. He was great last start. We’re having a bullpen game today. He could have been used with Andre Jackson. What happened to him
@dodgers_2021
What happened to Andre Jackson
Orel Saxhiser
Isn’t Jackson starting tonight’s game?
BlueSkies_LA
Jackson is on the 40-man roster but is currently in the minors.
empirejim
I know it cant happen, but as an avid Dodger fan I wish that Bellinger could be sent out for complete swing overhaul. I suppose the decision to overhaul the swing has to come from Belli, but no Dodger ever needed it more.
