The Angels have designated Adam Eaton for assignment, per a team announcement. His roster spot will go to righty James Hoyt, who has been recalled.
This will be Eaton’s second time being designated for assignment this season, after being let go by the White Sox in July. The club and the outfielder had reunited in the offseason, agreeing to a one-year, $8MM contract. Unfortunately, the lefty wasn’t able to produce enough to hold onto a roster spot with the Pale Hose, hitting .201/.298/.344 over 219 plate appearances, a wRC+ of 82.
A few days after being released, he signed on with the Angels, who tried to use Eaton to patch over the holes in their outfield created by injuries to Dexter Fowler, Mike Trout and Justin Upton. But Eaton’s numbers have only trended downward, a line of .200/.232/.277, producing a wRC+ of 39 since coming to Los Angeles. With the return of Upton and the team giving more playing time to up-and-coming prospects like Brandon Marsh and Jo Adell, Eaton has no found himself squeezed out.
With the White Sox still on the hook for the bulk of his salary, some other club could give Eaton a chance with no financial risk, only having to pay him the prorated league minimum.
When the Angels signed Eaton many seemed to think that he couldn’t do any worse than what he put up in Chicago this year. Well, he sure did.
Eaton was always only going to be a stop gab till they got healthy. It’s just taking a little longer than expected. As this article says, They went with the kids, can’t hurt.
It’s 100 percent revisionist to write what Monkey’s Uncle wrote. He flat out made it up.
When posters do that, all they do is ruin their credibility. No one was excited to add Eaton. People were happy that two infielders who couldn’t track fly balls were being replaced.
At no point did I say that anyone was excited to get Eaton. I said that people figured that he couldn’t do any worse than he did in Chicago. I am and was well aware that he was a stopgap and replacing infielders playing the outfield, hence the “he can’t be any worse” vibe.
I genuinely don’t care if you think I’m credible or not, but if you want to call me out, please try being accurate. I’m perfectly willing to admit I’m wrong when it happens, but you’re for some reason choosing to be upset by something I didn’t even say. Be well.
Prov was the only won who said a change of scenery might do him good. You flat out made up your post.
I’m simply at a loss for words now. My post had nothing to do with anything people posted before. Zero. You’re seeing what you want to see, not what was actually there. And that’s all I’ll have to say about this now. Again, be well.
I think people can review tho original Eaton thread and determine for themselves that you hurt your credibility. And the fact you defend it, hurts your credibility even more.
I wish you were at a loss for words, but you keep on digging.
Halo11Fan
No one was excited to add Eaton.
=================================
Not being an Angels fan, I can’t be excited, but I did like the pickup. It made more sense than burning service time for Adell and Marsh.
Eaton did what they wanted as a short term fill-in. His defense saved a couple of games– so he wasn’t horrible. He was only there a few weeks and was never a long term addition. Marsh and Adell weren’t ready when he was signed– they had no outfielders.
Exactly. Angel fans wanted him because they were playing thee infielders in the outfield and wanted someone who could catch and throw a baseball.
No one was expected anything more than that. He delivered.
For sure, mainly D purposes only. Whatever he did with the bat was a plus.
The Angels signed Eaton because they were playing two or three infielders in the outfield who couldn’t track fly balls. Since then they brought Marsh and Adell and Upton came off the IL.
There was a spot for him, now there is not. I was very happy to see Eaton in the outfield instead of Goose and Rengifo.
Go back read the Eaton thread. Tell me anyone who thought he was all of a sudden going to play like he did a few years ago.
See above.
Jeus effing Christ. Who cares? It might be time for you to step away from here for a while.
Who cares that people distort others so they can feel better about themselves and their positions? Far too few.
We all should. If we cared about truth, we wouldn’t have the politicians we have. When we care about truth, we make the world a better place.
He distorted other people’s opinions. Plain and simple.
it may be time to retire
He’s young enough to have a Japan run in him, maybe he will go from being a .200 hitter in MLB to a .250 hitter over there.
I really liked Eaton on the Nats but he has fallen fast. Too bad because I like his game. So what are we doing about shedding the dead weight pitching staff? I know the answer…nothing.
Drake wasn’t there to lead the clubhouse
He’s a pro – remember when Adam was Eaton the apple in the Garden of Eaton?
Hopefully Ward gets ABs now
Hopefully he doesn’t.
Ward is on AAA IL and not expected healthy soon.
I’m with you.. want to see what talent you been growing now is the time. They should gave Ward the run last season instead of starting the Arb clock on Adell when he wasn’t ready. Ward was putting up numbers close to Goodwins, at a cost cheaper than fowler.
Still don’t know why theyre wasting Thaiss away. He was hitting AAA well and they moved him back to catcher, knowing they will never give him a chance to catch the mlb staff.
Not to mention the minor leaguers talking trash on arte for bad facilities and what not. Do better angels.
Ward is injured, but even when he’s healthy what has he done? What position is he good at defensively? I wish they would move him back to catcher because I believe there his bat is actually very decent and his defense would be at least league average. He could be a good backup catcher.
I didn’t mind the Eaton signing at all, especially as the Halos were desperate for another outfielder at the time with their projected starting outfield (Trout, Upton, Fowler) all out. He was playing okay and hitting .265 just about a week ago. But he’s been slumping lately—gone hittless in his last 16 ABs—putting his average right on the Mendoza Line.
I guess his failure is because the Angels didn’t bring Drake LaRoache in to lead the clubhouse…
Multiple Drake LaRoche comments from you on this post. I can see your joke book is full of original content.
Multiple post on the child on multiple articles actually
“Pay off your mortgage”…
Angels – bottom 5 franchise in the history of mlb
Another nut heard from. Has your franchise ever lost more than 95 games.. yes, In fact your franchise lost 100
7 championship series this century (not wild cards). A World Series championship. A season with the best record in baseball. Can your team say that. Few can.
And Ohtani chose the Angels. Trout chose the Angels. While most fans were saying Ohtani cannot do both, the Angels did it right. Your franchise likely wouldn’t have.
Your take is moronic.
Dunno why they still have so many loyal fans haha. I love giving the locals grief about it. They want nothing to do with Anaheim!
Gay secret Santa strikes again!
I would argue that the Angels are better than bottom 5 franchise all time you have tabbed them. Here is my list of franchises worse all-time than the Angels.
Seattle Mariners
Milwaukee Brewers
Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals
Tampa Bay Rays
San Diego Padres
Florida Marlins
Texas Rangers
Toronto Blue Jays
Good to see Detmers pitch solid and pick up his 1st career win. The young SP’s are looking pretty solid of late. Liking the promise of next year more and more. Let’s go!
I agree. Things are looking up in Halo land. Still mountains to climb, but I’m optimistic about the Angels future.
I don’t think mountains. If the Angels go into 2021 with a shortstop and bullpen next year they should contend.
Sure they could add a good starter as well. That would help them out tremendously. But if they have a shortstop and a pen, they will contend. If they don’t, they won’t. Just like this year.
Bullpen… mountain #1,
SS…….. mountain #2, and
SP…….. mountain #3.
Hence, the figure of speech, “mountains to climb.”
Yes, everybody knows the needs, which are very obtainable with the funds this off-season. But I’d put a solid SP over a SS. Only if your cost cutting on one of all 3 needs. That said, I’d like them to get the best SS they can on a 1 year deal. I believe there’s some young SS possibilities coming soon in the organization.
Everyone keeps mentioning shortstop. What’s wrong with Iglesias?
Both Iglesias are free agents. Both exits create a vacuum that needs to be addressed.
Angel tradition suggest we will get Trevor Story. We will get sign a starter that used to be good but hasn’t been good recently, Noah Syndegaard seems to fit the bill, so expect him to sign a one year deal with the Angels. We will fill the bullpen with the left over pitchers around the league that no one else wanted.
Hopefully, it is different this year, but I feel like the past few off seasons have been a bit like the movie Groundhog Day.
With a healthy team, the Angels have a very solid line with literally no easy outs. For the first time in years, the Angels have hitters who can hit behind Trout.
There is no “tradition”. This is a unique situation.
The Angels need someone who can play short. He doesn’t have to be great, but a real shortstop. Iglesias is good enough.
I don’t thing there is a young shortstop coming up.
I’d like it a lot if they brought Jose Iglesias back. But it’s only if it’s a 2 year max deal. I was just saying if you were cost cutting some where. You got him at just over 3m in trade, maybe find someone like him, or close to. Need that pitching.
I agree. When you have multiple needs, you need to start off with the glaring holes. I don’t think SS is a glaring hole.
Joe,both Iglesias are free agents. Both exits create a vacuum that needs to be addressed.
They should have moved Eaton to the BP. His 89 MPH utility pitch is better than three or four pitchers they are using now. I’m only half kidding.
