The Yankees have reinstated Aaron Judge and Kyle Higashioka from the Covid-19-related injured list, per a club announcement. They’ve also added recent trade acquisition Clay Holmes to the active roster. In a series of corresponding moves, the Yankees placed righty Yoendrys Gomez on the Covid list, optioned outfielder Estevan Florial and righty Albert Abreu to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and transferred right-hander Michael King to the 60-day injured list.
Judge returns to the Yankees’ lineup batting second and will hope to help spur a rally in the standings for a Yankees club that currently trails the Red Sox by nine and a half games. The Yankees are a much more-manageable three and a half games out of the second Wild Card spot in the American League. The 29-year-old Judge has had another excellent season when he’s been on the field, batting .282/.375/.526 with 21 home runs in 360 trips to the plate.
Higashioka, meanwhile, has given the Yankees some power and a strong walk rate in a limited role as a backup. His .196/.278/.433 slash doesn’t exactly jump out, but he has more pop and a better walk rate than most reserve catchers you’ll find around the league.
King’s transfer to the 60-day IL rules him out until early September. He went on the 10-day IL back on July 8, and his 60-day minimum stay on the IL is retroactive to the date of the initial placement. In 48 1/3 innings this season, King has pitched to a 3.72 ERA with a 47-to-21 K/BB ratio.

Have the Yankees figured out a way to DH Judge and Stanton at the same time yet? ………..lol
ftasports
Why? Judges above average in RF? That was a good try though kid.
Salvi
Hes talking about the fact they can’t stay healthy, and need to DH to prevent injury. Nice try on comeback kid.
mrmackey
The DH would have prevented COVID?
tstats
No need for the sass on a good fair and true point
raindog
Covid is an injury? Nice try on comeback from comeback. Kid.
ellisburks
I would imagine he mentioned it so that they can keep them both healthy. Bigger bodied players like Judge break down easier.
Oxford Karma
Judge is a plus defender. One of the only good fielders on the team, and you want to DH him? Smart
dimitriinla
A plus defender who seems susceptible to injury.
Mlb1971
Oxford – Can not defend well if you are on the DL !!!!
dimitriinla
I would imagine that’s been the concern for a very long time. Potentially good offensive production (though hardly guaranteed) and a future defensive sacrifice for the club.
Samuel
Estevan Florial and Greg Allen are why they’ve been winning lately. Not swinging for HR’s, playing good OF defense, getting on base and manufacturing runs.
As John Sterling said a week ago – the Yankees problem is scoring runs. On the day he said it they were last in the AL in Runs Scored.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I know you don’t understand it.
But hitting singles is absolutely not what is missing from the Yanks, @samual.
’17-20 this team reached home more than any other team in MLB. & that is because we hit a lot of jacks. Lots & lots & lots of them.
With the new ball, perhaps a reassessment of offensive style is in order. But right now, they gotta dance with the girl that brung ’em, uh?
If we don’t start hitting more hone runs (*not* singles, bro) we won’t be playing in the postseason.
Joe says...
Whether sigles or homers, they gotta start hitting with RISP. They just had the bases loaded with one out and didn’t score.
Salvi
Homeruns are Yankees game, live or die. New Yankee Stadium is a bandbox 314ft down one line, 318 down the other. Make for a boring game though.
Mynameisnoname
399 to LCF, 385 to RCF. Below average park factor for RHB power. Many of those RF cheapies are cancelled out by loud outs in the alleys.
Tiger_diesel92
Yeah and they lead the league in solo homeruns , two in that same span , they are seeing fewer more fastballs pitch to them. Also their defense is lousy, you can’t have power in every spot of your lineup, it’s so easy to pick each of them off
Samuel
@Ducky Buckin Fent;
I know you don’t understand it.
Only dropped a part of it on you. You’re a typical Yankee fan that thinks swinging for HR’s erases all other mistakes and wins championships.
Here’s another part……
The pitching s OK. It’s not the reason for their so-so record with the 2nd highest payroll in MLB. (And all teams above them have had major injuries this year.)
Oxford Karma
They have some crazy number like 70% of their home runs are solo.
Maybe, just maybe, they need BOTH! They said on the radio today their avg with RISP IS .219. The next lowest in the AL is .236. That’s terrible.
Samuel
@ Oxford Karma;
Yes that’s a big part of it……
They think like Ducky – all their players do most of the time is swing for the fences.
Estevan Florial will be back. In addition to hitting, he played the best CF for the Yankees this year. ML pitcher’s will adjust to him. But defense is defense and baserunning is baserunning. The man is impressive. When the pitchers adjust it’ll be up to him to adjust back. We’ll see.

===============================================
Did you ever consider that both you and Samual are wrong? OPS and scoring correlate very well, Right now, the NYY are 7th in OPS, 6th in HRs, 10th in average, but 4th in OBP.
However, they are 13th in scoring. This is not to say that they NYY are a good scoring team, but I see no reason that they are so low. All I can see is RISP. In 2020, they were 1st in OPS with RISP. In 2021, they are last I’ve heard that RISP is not a predictable skill, so it is entirely possible tha they were lucky in 2020 and unlucky in 2021.
Samuel
I’m not wrong because I never wrote anything about hitting singles.
While that would help, that’s hardly the solution.
Ducky draws conclusions from what I write that I did not state, nor infer. Like other social media people, TV political commentators and politicians, he misrepresents what people say then condemn them for it to win his arguments…..because he cannot comprehend the issue.
Samuel
@ JoeBrady
If “OPS and scoring correlate very well”, then why don’t they for the Yankees?
As for RISP – you’re on MLBTR. Don’t you know that “there’s no such thing as clutch? Statistics prove it.”
tstats
This would be a good fangraphs study, RISP BABIP…

Winning lately? 5-5 in last 10 games isn’t winning lately when you’re looking up at the Mariners in the standings
Samuel
Brilliant……
And what would their record be the last 10 games without Estevan Florial and Greg Allen?
YankeesBleacherCreature
Florial only played in six of those ten games.
YankeesBleacherCreature
*five
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Samuel They’ve gone 5-5 in their last 10 games so I would hardly call that “winning lately” or gaining ground in the standings. I’m glad you think the Yankees are actually trying to play baseball now.
whyhayzee
Why does everyone think it’s a choice between hitting a single and hitting a home run? When you miss on the home run, it’s a pop out or an easy ground ball. When you miss on a single you still can hit a single. Singles replace ground outs and pop outs. And you can still hit home runs on the right pitches. And there’s always doubles, too. Hitting’s hitting. Swinging for the fences is not hitting. It’s easy outs. Runners lead to runs. Runs lead to wins.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Preach that to the Tatis Jrs,, Guerreros., Gallos, Ohtanis, etc. Your fight is with achieving launch angles and exit velos.
whyhayzee
That’s one guy in a lineup of nine guys. How many need to launch angle exit velocity the daylights out of the ball? There’s a critical number there. If you have four or five of them, who gets on base?
YankeesBleacherCreature
The guys who draw walks when they’re not busy striking out or hitting homers.
tstats
Tatis gets his hits Vladdy is competing for the batting title, just no
Yep it is
Awesome I will watch the IL for Saturday when he goes back on.

Any chance the Yankees ever consider trading Aaron Judge? What the long term plan with him, DH?
YankeesBleacherCreature
I don’t see it as he’s worth more to the Yankees than any other team. The long-term is play him in RF where he excels until he can’t. Every power hitter’s long-term plan is to DH.
Mlb1971
Central Valley – Staton is the DH for the next seven years, so that was my question in the first post in this thread, The NYY need to find a way to have multiple DHs, because Cashman loves them so much. He is paying $100s of millions for China Dolls (easily broken players). I seriously doubt they win another World Series as long as he stays as GM. He can not out spend every other team by $100 million any more!!!
Wowwwwww
If Stanton and Judge had been able to stay healthy consistently their whole careers, and assuming they played the equal amount of games and years. Who do you think would have more home runs by time they retire?
whyhayzee
Ted Williams.
Mlb1971
My wife has started conversations, “If money was not an issue…..”
Who cares about the answer to an irrelevant question!
Staton and Judge did not stay healthy!
If we could live on the moon or Mars which would be better……..see what I mean
Hughass5g
21 dingers and 47 rbis is not great compared to other teams “best hitters”
Oxford Karma
Hard to get rbi without guys in base.
mjpeez
Yankees suck
mlbnyyfan
Great now trade him Would ATLANTA be interested with Acuna out for the year. A package of Waters and others for Judge.
Dorothy_Mantooth
If the Yankees trade Judge, they might as well blow the team up as much as they can. He is their vocal leader in the clubhouse (DJ is too quiet to lead) and the team looks to him for motivation and direction. God knows they don’t get that from their coach! While I don’t think NY should sign Judge to a huge extension, they should make a reasonable 3-4 year extension offer to try and keep him after next season. I’m not sure how robust his 2022 FA market will be anyways due to his age and injury history.
JoeBrady
Spot on correct. The idea of trading Judge, when he is their only outfielder, sounds insane to me.
ctyank7
Shame on Cashman, still disrespectful of Florial’s talent and potential impact.
mlbnyyfan
Yankees need to blow team up. Yankees are boring and not very athletic. Judge may get Yankees a decent return much like Boston did with Betts
YankeesBleacherCreature
Betts is a better player with a much longer track record. Judge is not going to command as much via trade.
Oxford Karma
Betts was a one year rental that you needed to resign. You’d get a better package for judge right now, but not because he’s better. Team control.
YankeesBleacherCreature
That’s team control for an extra two or three months over Betts. Look at Betts’ year-end average games played and fWar totals for the previous five seasons before he was traded. He was a sure thing with high upside. No one believes Judge has an 8-10 fWar ceiling. I disagree that Judge could fetch more even considering the salary he will earn through arb next season.
Samuel
@ mlbnyyfan;
You can move the players around. But when you play the same style of baseball in an environment that’s not conducive to it, that won’t make much difference.
Example – if you have an football organization that primarily wants to run the ball on offense in today’s NFL, are they going to win a lot?
