The Yankees have agreed to terms with first-round pick Trey Sweeney, per Baseball America’s Carlos Collazo (Twitter link). He’ll take home a $3MM signing bonus that checks in $242,900 south of the slot value for the No. 20 overall selection.
Sweeney, a shortstop out of Eastern Illinois, posted a ridiculous-looking .382/.522/.712 batting line during his junior season, adding 14 home runs, ten doubles and a pair of triples in 226 plate appearances. Pre-draft rankings didn’t necessarily foreshadow a first-round selection, as he ranked 54th among Baseball America’s top 500 draft prospects, 55th at MLB.com, 63rd at FanGraphs and 89th over at The Athletic. Scouting reports on Sweeney peg him as a candidate for a position change at the pro level — though his plate discipline and raw power could still play at a number of other spots on the diamond.
As Collazo has previously reported, the Yankees have gone under slot with their selections in the second, fourth, ninth and tenth rounds of this year’s draft. The total savings so far have netted them about $623K, which could help them sign high school lefty Brock Selvidge — their third round pick (No. 92 overall) who entered the draft believed to be a tough sign thanks to a strong commitment to Louisiana State University.

In a perfect world he takes 3B over from Urshela in 2025.

Yep I think this kid could move fast and be our future 3rd baseman.
Volpe can play ss and second and Peraza ss and second. Josh Smith can be super utility and is another left handed bat. The 3 of them are high contact, fast, good defense players and that’s exactly what the Yanks need. Hauver is another kid that can fit in there somewhere. What that means is in 2-3 years we could have a completely different infield. Torres may be traded. Voit should be dealt as soon as he’s healthy. Urshala is great for next few years but no long term deal should ge given to him and maximize his trade value at some point. We have a nice strong positional youth movement with Wells and the Martian coming so the future does look very bright! If only Stanton would waive that no trade and go to the west coast. We than sign Judge long term. Deal Hicks when healthy for whatever and the Yanks can have a very nice transition to more youth, high contact, small ball, speed on bases, better overall defense!

I think you might have the cart pretty far in front of the horse.
billysbballz
Actually I’m laying out a future where the team could be younger and much more exciting than this base to base, swing forward fences, mostly strikeout team.
higgy5220
Peraza might be the best SS prospect in the system
PinstripedPride
Um, every championship team hits lots of home runs, and teams who hit home runs are exciting. What we need is a more fundamentally grounded team that can do the other facets of the game. Now that I am game for
pbfog
No you didn’t, the Yankees did. You’re just restating what they did.
ws_champs
I also remember when Phil Hughes was going to be the next ace… Jose Tabata was the next Soriano… and Severino was the next Pedro.

Jesus Montero says Hi!

Stanton is going nowhere and the Yankees are going to a youth movement. They will continue to pay for overpriced stars. Cashman sucks. He has spent over 2 billion dollars the last 10 Years and won nothing.
rocky7
While they haven’t won the World Series, they have pretty consistently been a playoff team with the exception of 1 year…..in fact they have finished first in the Division 15 times since 94, second 9 times since 94, 3rd twice, and 4th (while still going 84-78) 1 time since 94…again, judging from success, there are lots of franchises in MLB that would gladly trade places…..just correcting your incorrect comment about “inning nothing”!!
Secondly, everyone can be traded….just need to find the right team, and it probably will cost lots of money too move him, but you can trade anybody with the right deal.
scottbour
If the Yankees don’t win the World Series their season is a failure. Anybody can spend $200 million every year and make the playoffs, for them that’s meaningless. There is a better chance of you going to the moon than Stanton getting traded.

Great comment.
Don’t forget Wells. He’s gonna be bigger than all of them.
I disagree on the positions you had for them but I know their bats will play. It’s funny,I’ve always thought Gleyber should be in LF.
stymeedone
Wasn’t aware there was a west coast team, let alone any team, that was willing to take Stanton’s contract off the NYY hands.

It shouldn’t take Sweeney four years to reach the majors since he’s coming out of college. Also Urshela is a free agent after 2023 and will be 32. If all goes well in his development Sweeney could be up with the Yankees in late 2023 and take over the 3B job full time the following year
mlbnyyfan
Don’t forget if all goes well Yankees sign International Superstar Roderick Arias next year. Hopefully he will be our SS of the Future.
stymeedone
You mean take the 3b job from Andujar. That was the last great plan wasn’t it? When Andujar and Frasier, and Floriel got to the bigs?
rocky7
And how many other franchises have proclaimed future stars only to see them fall by the wayside and become pretty ordinary…..the Yankees aren’t; any different than any other MLB team…..predicting stardom sometimes get you burned but the Yankee organization is not alone in that!
billysbballz
Frazier unfortunately I don’t feel has the personality to truly fit in NY. I think eventually he winds up in Atlanta and thrives. I hope he returns at some point healthy and sticks with one batting stance and starts raking. Andujar has a quality bat but zero glove and he will be a future DH somewhere. Unfortunately that is not in pinstripes because Stanton clogs up that spot for next 8 years. Florial maybe a 4th outfielder for the Yanks eventually with elite speed, defense, and some power. I think these young kids like Volpe, Peraza, Smith, Wells, Hauver are a different mix of talent. They are not all or nothing swing fir fences. They are high contact, excellent defense in most cases, speed on base paths which can succeed in the majors. It’s what the Yanks need and where they are headed. Some small moves here and there to maybe get lucky and try and get into the playoffs the next few years until this prospect class is ready.
When it was a game.
I agree every year everyone is future superstar. That draft about 10 years ago the Yankees had 4 first rounders. All washed out. Cant go by me. I had Lastings Millage the second coming of Rickey Henderson
FunkyD
Suit him up for Tuesday’s game.
whyhayzee
Funny when you hear yankee fans constantly complaining about other teams overvaluing their prospects.
karldanger
Uhh every team’s fans does this
top jimmy
A lefty with good power … something that the Yanks have desperately needed the last few seasons.
fitsiqis65
with the genius cashman running shop the chances this guy ever makes it to the bronx are somewhere between slim and none…..
toomuchpie
You just described the majority of all prospects regardless of organization.
fitsiqis65
maybe- but you should check and see how the higher round draft picks of boston tampa toronto and the teams the yanks chase have been doing compared to the drek cashman turns out….
Kyak
Going to be a bust. Guy can’t hit a fastball over 93 mph.
When it was a game.
Since power now is so important he has none at his age level. I never got the raw power and developed. Heard it a million times but never heard the result.
YankeesBleacherCreature
They’re paying him $3M to hit knuckleballs.
