The White Sox have acquired catcher Deivy Grullon from the Rays in exchange for cash considerations, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports (Twitter link).
With Yasmani Grandal still recovering from knee surgery, it isn’t surprising that the White Sox are looking to add to their catching depth. Zack Collins has been starting while Grandal is sidelined, with Seby Zavala as the backup and Yermin Mercedes (who has caught in a couple of games but is primarily a DH) is at Triple-A trying to get his swing on track. Grullon adds another backstop with at least some MLB experience to the mix.
It represents an opportunity for Grullon to perhaps finally get another crack at the big leagues after a number of different uniform changes over the last 10 months. Originally with the Phillies last September, Grullon has been claimed off waivers five times by four different teams — the Red Sox, Reds, Rays, Mets, and then the Rays again back in May.
Grullon appeared in one game with Boston in 2020, after debuting with four appearances for Philadelphia during the 2019 season. A veteran of eight minor league seasons, the 25-year-old Grullon didn’t show much at the plate until 2018, when he hit 21 homers over 353 plate appearances for the Phillies’ Double-A affiliate. He has had a lot of success at the Triple-A level, hitting .265/.340/.488 with 29 homers in 574 Triple-A plate appearances.
You can thank me now!
And it begins….
I just made a player on the show 21. With that last name. Didn’t know the names on the game were real names and players.
How many f’ing teams has this guy been on this year?

Good lord 5 teams in a year maybe its time to hang it up
Perhaps some day he will catch on.
how many teams have you been with this year?
Yeah, when a lot of teams have interest in you is exactly the time to hang it up.
A backup catch making “minimum wage” on an MLB team makes $570,000 a year, so two week on an MLB team, as a backup catch, replacing a injured player, Grullon could make the ANNUAL average income in 11 states.
….worth staying for?
OMG! I would hate to be him at tax time. Filing must take at least half a season to complete.
that’s why ymwe have accountants and tax pros, they aren’t doing their taxes themselves, no way
Reds to Rays to Mets to Rays to Sox since April
Ok. Catching depth is good.
A rental 2nd baseman, an outfielder, and some bullpen help is hopefully in deck
If Robert can be up to playing speed by September 1 there is no need for another outfielder. Like to see them get Story to play second. Hamilton and Goodwin good reserves. Engel in right.
I’d rather they not rush Robert of they can strike a deal for a starting outfielder that can also DH (or make eloy a full-time DH), if Robert can get back in time
No need for an OFer.
Dumpster divin theo… wait, wrong team.
Dumpster diving had them up 8 games at the AS break… Even in a bad division that’s impressive
World Series!
Worst division. And not overly impressive. White sox definitely could use eloy + another reliever.
CubsFan your bias is showing…
The worst division in baseball is the N.L central hands down…
I can’t wait to see how many non-top 100 prospects the Cubs scoop up for Bryant before the deadline. Or worst yet, Rizzo in a Brewers uni. lol
Doubt rizzo, but you could be right about bryant. Feel like he will get them a bucket of balls and a ruby tuesday gift card for bryant
City, how were they able to get this guy!! What a move!! I’m so surprised that Uncle Jerry was willing to spend soooo much to help the team lol.
Hope the rebuild goes well!!!
excuse me for being stupid….who the h— is Grullon? Never heard of him……thats the best thats available? I once played semi-pro and once caught a no hitter, am still a free agent, since 1965. How can I get a try out?
This is a depth pick up… Go call the score and complain
Why complain. I LOVE it, lol.
It’s an indication that Grandel will be back 100% or close to it by the playoffs. Nothing subtracted from the talent that gets them there leaving prospects available for a 2nd baseman and bullpen help. Great move by Hahn if they get healthy.
I will go out on a limb and predict that this move will in no way impact this season at all.
might impact Charlotte’s though
Daivy Grullon learned to hit. On defense, he can make plays and quick to throw out base runners but, he just hasn’t mastered how to throw out base stealers.
Another smart move by Slick Rick Hahn!
He hit a homer tonight!
Well now you’re just tootin your own horn
Hahn grew up a Cub fan. Least you could do, is say thank you.
I
I’d like to see this guy actually get a chance to play a little bit. Clearly teams keep seeing something in him if he keeps getting claimed over and over like this… or maybe teams keep not seeing something in him, causing him to get claimed over and over like this.
Zero cost to the roster; pay to take a flyer on a 25 year old who has to be better than Seby. Hahn won’t get credit, but this is a smart move and with enough time to see if they need to move a prospect or 40 man player to get a guy like Stallings, Barnhart or ??
This is about replenishing Charlotte.
All of the White Sox fans jumping on Hahn in the comments section are incredibly uninformed.
All of the non-Sox fans jumping in as if this was intended to be a big move, well that’s what they do here in the comments section of mlbtr.
Or it could mean Collins/Zavala has been discussed in another possible trade move,
Dude being passed around like a bong at a frat party.
That’s half of the cubbies roster…
Only 1 of 1 I’ve ever pulled and it’s worthless
Nice one Rick. This is a good depth move. And just money, no prospects. Now that, I like to see.
My first thought was, “Who?” and second thought was, “Who’d they give up?” On learning the answers, I’m ok with this. Too bad they won’t fill true needs so easily and cheaply.
Don’t mind the low-cost depth move. My guess is it signifies they have no intention of standing pat if they’re shoring up a position of little need. Now I’m just hoping they aren’t getting Story or trading Kelley for a rental.
This has me thinking the Sox either think Grandal might be hurt more than they are letting on. If they add Grullon to the roster, that means the Yerminator will be forever in the minors as he was listed ahead of Sevy Zavala on the roster chart, and Zavala is on the active roster.
Maybe this also means that the Sox are working a deal where either Zavala or Collins has been discussed, so the Sox are getting ready for the replacement.
MLBTR is the only place I have seen this news. So am I wrong in assuming all he is right now for the Sox is minor league depth?
When I first read this, I wondered if he was taking Zavala’s spot on the 26-man right away, that’s why I ask.
