Let’s round up some roster moves made ahead of today’s ballgames…
- The Marlins will reinstate Sandy Alcantara from the bereavement list today. To create a roster spot, Braxton Garrett will be optioned to Triple-A, per MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola (via Twitter). Garrett made the most of his spot start yesterday, tossing seven innings to get the win against the Padres. He gave up just two earned runs on four hits while walking one and notching 10 strikeouts.
- The Phillies announced a number of roster moves today. Mickey Moniak has returned to the Major League roster in place of Travis Jankowski, who was placed on the COVID-related injured list. Chase Anderson, meanwhile, was reinstated from the COVID-related IL, and Cristopher Sanchez was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
- The Royals optioned Tyler Zuber to Triple-A today to make room for Daniel Lynch, who has been recalled to start today’s ballgame, per MLB.com’s Anne Rogers (via Twitter). Lynch is hoping for better results today after getting shelled in his first three career starts. He’s lasted just eight total innings while yielding 14 earned runs on 18 hits and five walks while recording seven strikeouts.

Garrett’s flash of brilliance just goes to show how many talented young arms the Marlins have hoarded. Can’t wait to see them develop more and for the offense to come around in the next few years.
Monkey’s Uncle
Good for Garrett. I like to see when a guy gets an opportunity like that and makes the most of it.
Fever Pitch Guy
Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

If he can find that lost velocity he has had since the pandemic, he should be fine. He went from 92-94, touching 96, to 87-89, touching 90
DarkSide830
yeah, looks like Anderson for Monday.
g32knights
They already announced Howard
DarkSide830
whoops! nevermind.
ham77
Too bad. Sanchez actually pitched decent out of the pen.

It’s time for John Middleton to lay down the law regarding vaccination. Any player on the 40-man roster who refuses vaccination (unless within three months of recent COVID infection) needs to be traded or released. Only vaccinated players should be acquired via trade or free agent signing. Players absolutely have the right to refuse vaccination, but they do not have the right to play for a team whose success is being undermined again and again by losing players unnecessarily to the COVID list.
mhsaltz1963
Well said. Enough of the “personal choice” explanations for not getting the vaccination. These multi-million dollar salaried jocks’ ability to play directly affects their team’s on field success. Professional baseball teams are private businesses and ownership dictates the responsibilities of its employees.
BruntlettSupastar
I don’t know if the world could take Vince Valsquez becoming sterile and not continuing his great line.
DarkSide830
yeah, that would totally end well for a number of reasons…
Captain Dunsel
Would it be worse than how the team is doing now? Players with real value, like Nola, will bring back value in return. Players without value can be replaced. At least the management and fans will be more reliably able to count on players actually playing. Middleton can back it up with a willingness to spend above the luxury tax line. The team can use some shaking up, and a shared commitment to vaccination can help bind the team together.
DarkSide830
dumping half the team on w whim isnt remotely worth the value provided by “shared commitment to vaccination.” i have no issue with the vaccine in general, but that really just makes no sense.
Captain Dunsel
Let’s be honest, this team is nowhere near a championship level team. I don’t think you would see half the team leave; MLB roster spots are hard to come by, so I believe that after the first few trades or releases some vaccine holdouts will take the shot. The shared commitment to vaccination is really just an indicator of putting the team first. That spirit is a prerequisite for a real championship team, and the true value obtained. Given time and resources, I trust Dombrowski to build such a winner.

Almost like this isn’t America and we don’t have a choice right? The Phillies success’ isn’t undermined because of Covid. They’re undermined by the inability to put together a decent bullpen….
Captain Dunsel
Just as the players have a choice to not be vaccinated, the team owner has a choice of which players he wants to employ. In America, choice works for everyone or it works for no one. The Phillies’ pitching woes are only exacerbated by the additional lack of decent pitching caused by losing pitchers to the COVID list.
SpendNuttinWinNuttin
Where you’re wrong is the Phillies have half assed put together a bullpen. To actually sit here and push the narrative that the Covid is ruining you’re season is a joke because every team is going through it. To push the narrative that everyone needs vaccinated is also – a joke but not for a baseball chat. JoJo Romero, Zach Eflin, Sam Coonrod, Seranthony Dominguez, Bailey Falter are the pieces that you needed to form a decent bullpen? Because that’s their IL… and only 2 of them have career ERAs under 4.50… I just can’t believe anyone drinks that kool-aid. Then again…
Captain Dunsel
The only one on your list missing time due to Covid is Falter, who has had some good outings. Losing Nola for a time definitely hurt. Losing Jankowski hurts the defense, which hurts the pitching. Et cetera, etc cetera, and so on.
SpendNuttinWinNuttin
So wait, losing pitchers to the covid list is an issue but only one guy is on the list for covid? I guess I’m missing where it’s effecting the bullpen then… The Phillies defense isn’t much to gloat about to begin with so I see where losing a guy there could hurt. But we’re talking about a historically bad bullpen here. Travis Jankowski a 7 year player with 387 career games (majority of them in ‘16 & ‘18) isnt turning the tables on that bullpen..
When it was a game.
Question For Phillies fans. Is Moniak major league ready? The few times I hace seen him it looked as if he was totally overmatched and wasn’t tearing it up in the minors.
brucebochyisthemarlboroman
He’s looked better this year but for the most part your assessment is on point. He’s still young yet but the clock is ticking and for a guy taken 1/1 it’s a much shorter clock.
Audrey
He’s hitting well in AAA so I would think he’s ready, whether or not he’ll be good in the majors is a different story.
DarkSide830
Moniak has a history of needing a while to get going when going to a new level. this was his first stint in AAA, and he’s hit much better of late, so maybe.
mhsaltz1963
He’s shown me nothing that indicates he’s major league ready. He looks overmatched at the plate and in the field.
BruntlettSupastar
I have not seen him at AAA but I suspect he may need some situational hitting coaching as well.
BruntlettSupastar
These moves remind me of one of the reasons why I hold out hope for Fuld and Dombrowski running the Phillies.
If previous management was still in charge, I could totally imagine them messing up the Covid and injured list options, and not remembering to bring people back in the paperwork or would lose track of them. I feel as though there were years of Phillies where nobody watched the wire or bothered to claim anybody.
Tdat1979
Time for the Royals to bring up their starting pitchers as well as Bobby Witt and let them finish out the year with the big club.
MajorLeague79
Definitely worth giving it a shot. Watching the Royals this year after April has been painful.
Bob333
Sanchez should be staying Moniak sucks I’d rather try to get Inciarte from the Braves instead of Moniak. This team must be sellers bad mix with NO LEADERSHIP
