3:51 pm: Gray seemed wholly unconcerned when speaking with reporters (including Mark Sheldon of MLB.com) this afternoon. He said he pitched through the discomfort during his start yesterday and expects to be back when first eligible. In that case, he wouldn’t need to skip a turn in the rotation.
1:38 pm: The Reds announced Thursday that they’ve placed right-hander Sonny Gray back on the 10-day injured list due to a rib cage strain. It’s the third IL stint of the season for Gray, who had very recently returned from a four-week absence due to a groin strain. Right-hander Tony Santillan is up from Triple-A Louisville in his place.
Cincinnati hasn’t provided a timetable for Gray’s return, though it’s possible that with the All-Star break looming, the impact of his absence could be minimal. Gray started yesterday’s game (and pitched quite well), so he wouldn’t have been in line to make another start prior to the break anyhow. He’d be eligible to return for the Reds’ third game after the break, so it’s technically possible that he won’t even miss a start.
If the injury does prove to sideline Gray for a few outings, however, it’ll be a particularly ill-timed IL trip. The Reds, winners in 10 of their past 15 games, will come out of the break to host a pivotal three-game series against the division-leading Brewers. They’ll then take on a first-place Mets club before playing a string of seven straight divisional games (four against the Cubs, three against the Cardinals) in the days leading up to the July 30 trade deadline. Getting multiple starts from Gray, who has a 3.19 ERA in 62 frames this year, would obviously be ideal.
The Reds’ recent hot streak has propelled them back to second place in the NL Central. They’re six back of the Brewers at the moment, making these next seven games in particular quite important to their season. General manager Nick Krall recently characterized his club as deadline buyers, although one would imagine that is at least somewhat dependent on how the team performs in the looming seven-game stretch against the current division leaders.
For now, Santillan will give the Reds’ staff some depth. All four of his outings with the big league club this season have been starts, but he’ll give manager David Bell a multi-inning option out of the ’pen for now, it seems. In 16 2/3 innings of big league work so far, Santillan has allowed seven earned runs (3.78 ERA) on 18 hits and 10 walks with 20 punchouts.

The number of injuries is getting ridiculous!
BirdieMan
Most of them are just simple strains. Guys want their money, but they sure don’t want to play.
oldmansteve
Players are realizing if they play at 75% and put up numbers at 75% they will get payed 75%. The monetary incentive is to not play unless you are fully healthy.
Ducky Buckin Fent
This may actually not be an injury at all. Just some IL/40 man shenanigans. Awfully convenient timing, uh?
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Is that it Steve or are the owners playing games like Ducky indicates? If its baseball Manfred will never figure it out….. He’s too busy trying to figure out how his own fly works.
Deadguy
If They are paying based on performance I’d only play fully healthy as well
AZPat
If all the Reds wanted was another reliever, they could always use Gray out of the pen before the AS break. They don’t need to manipulate the system to call up a pitcher that has never relieved until this past week.
lemonlyman
So the better answer would be to bring one of their top pitchers out of the pen on short rest before the break?
They’re playing within the rules. Are they bending them? Sure. But bending isn’t breaking. MLB already changed the rules to prevent IL manipulation, it’s not the Reds’ fault for operating within those rules.
bot
Reds have no money and no prospects that can be dealt for decent pitchers. Time to bring up your young guns or it’s gonna be a wasted season.
Not real sure why lodolo missed a few weeks of action but he’s been lights out ! Him and Greene are the only answers reds have to bulk this pitching staff this season. They better bring em up and not waste the season as castellanos is surely gone after this year
hoyce
Reds have plenty of prospects and GM has said they can add “within reason” at deadline. I think this gray move is to get another pitcher available Bec gray wasn’t gonna pitch til after break anyway. Can start gray 3rd game back after break. Manipulate rotation that Miley and Castillo face the brewers after break also.
bot
They do but how do u trade away 19 year olds w no professional experience under their belt ? As in Hendrick Hinds or Callahan….outside of them – if u are the acquiring team – who would you want ? Siana can’t hit and Richardson will be lucky to throw relief in majors at any point and time in his career.
Ashcroft is another option reds have to bring up.
redmatt
Um…what?
earmbrister
Lodolo was dealing with blisters on his pitching hand if memory serves. Both he and Greene have crap for innings pitched. They’re not coming up until September at the earliest.
hiflew
I am always concerned with any pitcher that deals with pitching hand blisters. That is not a problem that goes away unless the pitcher completely changes his grip. Which could create far different problems.
jbryant0693
@bot, You are obviously not very aware of Reds MiL pitching depth. Plenty of quality pitchers not named Greene or Lodolo, and plenty of prospect capital for deals too, Lorenzen is coming soon and other MLB depth include Ashcraft, Santillan, Hoffman, Moreta, Sanmartin, Plus several prospects in lower levels that are not yet MLB ready possible for trades, although probably not needed given the depth.
bot
You are right. I know very little about reds A ball pitchers. They still won’t net you a notable name however. If u acquire a big name – that requires a big name prospect to trade away.
So you ready to see Hendricks dealt then ?
SalaryCapMyth
I don’t know why you have so much negative press going for the Reds farm. Lodolo and Greene are both highly regarded prospects with a few others ranging in the top 100 propsect lists. If prospects are the kind of coin the Reds can use than they COULD make a pretty hefty trade. Don’t know if they should though. Maybe they ought to see what Greene and or Lodolo can do because I don’t think they are one missing piece away from a pennant.
burtgummer
As you noted Lodolo was injured for quite a while plus he’s only at AA
Greene has been borderline awful at AAA so far
Don’t need to rush them
BrandonGregory74
Castellanos loves being in Cincinnati.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Skies are gray for Sonny, we need to set up a triage with Hawkeye & Radar for MLB. Teams had better have multiple layers of depth to deal with this.

I don’t really know what the Reds are doing. They don’t have a bad team. But it’s not a good team either. India is really good but a 3b playing 2b is silly. The Reds seem to change directions like the wind I don’t understand the direction of the team at all.
hiflew
India has been pretty good, not great, at second. Besides they had long time 3B Moustakas at 2B, which was even weirder because at least India has the youth to pull of a position switch like that. The biggest problem is that aside from Votto, their entire infield is best at 3B. Suarez is not comfortable at short and his hitting is suffering from the position change.
They need to trade either Suarez or Moustakas for a real middle infielder. I wonder if Suarez + a middling prospect would get Trevor Story. If Moose gets healthy, a Moose/Story/India/Votto infield with Farmer as the utility guy would be very good for the stretch run. For the Rox, it would give them a bounceback candidate and a good opportunity to stop giving Josh Fuentes regular at bats.
Sideline Redwine
How about a RH starting pitcher for Joey Wendle? Good bat, great glove, solid clubhouse presence, years of control remaining…
hiflew
Problem there is I doubt the Rays will be willing to give him up midseason.
oldmansteve
I thought the same about Adames. One thing I’ve learned is never let conventional wisdom get in Rays’ way.
hiflew
Fair point. Although they don’t have the #1 prospect in the game to take Wendle’s place like they did with Adames.
bot
I like that Suarez for story trade hiflew ! Suarez is under a sweetheart deal so that’s probably all it’d take and be way better if return for Denver then they’d get anywhere else. Reds would loose Suarez making roughly 12 mil per for next 4 seasons in exchange for a 1/2 season rental, but if reds are going for it this season- having story at short, moose at 3rd and india at second improves that line up substantially
hiflew
I think with the poor season Suarez is having it might take a mid range prospect to go along with him. But not a top guy. Maybe a 14-20 team guy attached Someone like Riley O’Brien, a prospect close to the majors, but a bit older pitcher.
BrandonGregory74
Or let Senzel take over at Shortstop and unload Moose or ride it out and let Moose go in the off season. Senzel is not an OF.
hiflew
Senzel is also not healthy enough to play. It’s a fine idea, but a guy needs to be on the field to be useful.
Armaments216
Moustakas has spent most of this season on the 60-day IL and is still owed $38M for 2022-2023. Can’t imagine there are many takers for that.
votto68
I watch every Reds game and India plays a good 2nd base. There is no problem with him switching positions and playing there.
jbryant0693
Roster manipulation pure and simple. Santillan needed as RP for huge MIL series before and after the break,
bot
Him and Gutierrez both need to be in that long relief role. Pitching 3 innings every 4/5 days. Throw Hoffman and lorenzen in that mix too. Decent crop of inning eaters for 2nd 1/2 of season
bucsfan0004
Rec for roster manipulation. The Pirates used to do this type of stuff with Cole and other SPs when they were halfway decent.

redsorbust
Hey all. IMO I don’t see the Reds being able to overtake the Brewers. No chance at wild card with the NL West claiming that and I am an optimistic die hard Reds fan. We need to trade Nick Castellanos while his value is very high. I would not trade for Trevor Story he is just a half year rental and he’s not playing that well this year anyway. I say cash in now on Castellanos, combine that next year with our triple A players coming up and Castillo, Gray and Suarez playing up to their potential we can have a legit playoff team. DH is coming and stick Votto in there and find a power hitting first baseman. Anyway hope I am wrong. Hope Reds can overtake Brewers and need to start by somehow winning 3 of four or sweep them this series.
Grand Salami
I don’t disagree on Castellanos but the fan base would revolt if the Reds deal him while sitting, for example, three games back.
If the DH comes then the Reds already have a platoon with Votto/Stephenson. No reason to shop for another 1st basemen.
The Brewers up 2 early with Reds threatening.
This team needs to fix its roster and upgrade SS once Moose is back. Will he be?
bot
Castellanos is a goner 100%. But he’s never been given a QO so reds can do that and then they’ll pick around 30. Recent picks in that range have turned into Jeter Downs, Tony Santillian, Taylor trammel, and Jesse winker. Plus they have 2 more of those picks this weekend. I’ll take reds track record w that pick vs unloading castellanos
Cap & Crunch
Wade Miley for Didi makes a bunch of sense for both teams – Reds probably have to kick in a few moderate prospects but it’s a nice hedge trade for both teams for the 2nd half of 21 and all 22 –
Cincy brings up some arms internally 2nd half and see what happens
Id still hold optimism as I see the Reds the team to capitalize if Brewers fall to inj, it won’t be coaching as Counsell’s a wizard …We seen what happened to the Dodgers in 10 days so optimism should still linger in the corners
I think I would trade Cast as well, but maybe go Cle style and ask for some pro ready players for 22 min in the package
lumber and lighting
Reds need up the middle everything!Worst infield D in baseball.3 corner OF playing most nites because they’re the only 1’s hitting consistently.
