Joey Gallo’s name has been at the forefront of multiple trade rumors for months, though Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports that the Rangers “have become more aggressive” in their pursuit of a possible contract extension with the outfielder. Gallo has one year of arbitration remaining before being eligible for free agency following the 2022 campaign. It isn’t known whether Texas has actually made Gallo an offer, as agent Scott Boras declined to comment on the subject yesterday.
It isn’t unusual for teams to make what might essentially be a last-ditch effort at a long-term deal prior to the deadline. (Just earlier this week, Starling Marte and the Marlins held negotiations that didn’t end up panning out, so Marte is now looking like a prime candidate to be dealt prior to the July 30th deadline.) Of course, it also isn’t common for these midseason talks to actually result in a new contract. While Gallo has expressed his fondness for remaining with the Rangers, striking a new deal in the midst of the season would certainly count as a surprise for multiple factors — perhaps chief amongst them that Gallo is represented by Boras, whose clients usually end up testing the free agent market.
An extension would mean that Gallo would be putting a lot of faith in the Rangers’ front office that their current rebuild would bear fruit, as the team doesn’t look in position to contend by next season. From the Rangers’ perspective, obviously they would like to keep a player like Gallo in the fold, but his greatest value to the club at this point might be as a trade chip.
Gallo’s name has already been linked to the Yankees and Padres on the rumor mill, and Grant adds that the Blue Jays (who have been scouting Texas games over the past week) are “perhaps the Rangers’ most favored potential trade partner.” The Jays could have interest in any number of possible Rangers trade chips, and considering Toronto’s need for arms, Gallo might perhaps be lower on the Blue Jays’ radar than pitchers like Kyle Gibson or Ian Kennedy.

See, fans, at least we tried. – Rangers’ Front Office
mrranger
LOL. You don’t know what you speak of.
Al Hirschen
This is a Ditch effort. This way if they don’t sign him and they trade him they can go to the fan base and said see we tried
TroyVan
Sounds like you have used the term “ditch effort” incorrectly. If you are in a war and in a “ditch”, you are fighting hard for something you want. If you are in the last ditch, you are fighting the hardest as it is the last line of defense.
padam
Or, you can ditch that person and leave them, whom you are not trying hard to keep.
johnnygunz
That’s gold
GabeOfThrones
Exactly what that is. Especially since Boras wouldn’t leak the negotiations.
Benjamin101677
I believe your 100% right there and teams trying to get him all the sudden say we need to up that offer before they re sign him.
I believe he will be dealt;
justacubsfan
This and, “offers are not up to par. We will just extend him.”
cleribe
At least the Rangers put on a show, my team publicly told us to enjoy a player while he’s around and released their best bullpen arm over 10mm.
WiffleBall
But here’s the thing: The Rangers aren’t making a sincere effort. As you say, it’s all for show; I can appreciate your team’s honesty. At least then you can decide with your eyes open if and how you want to support your team. The Rangers are trying to trick their fans into thinking they actually want to keep their players, into thinking they actually want to win.
Jaa1968
Why would he want to stay in Texas? They’re not trying to be competitive!
Al Hirschen
No state income tax
Benjamin101677
That is a good point no state income tax but I think most players want to win. At the huge salary he will get shouldn’t be a huge matter to loose a couple hundred thousand per year in taxes.
Also some states like California tax even non California baseball players for every game they play in California. So getting out of the American league west and not having to play Oakland and angels all those games would save money too
MyWhiteSoxAreDirty
Only if you’re a resident of Texas, otherwise you owe taxes on your income to your state of residence if that state has an income tax.
Same goes if he plays in a state with an income tax but remains a Texas resident, he’d still have zero state income tax.
MarkoRock68
Wrong
MLB players pay tax in the state the games are played . So visiting players pay tax for away games in the state the game takes place. Exception is Canada and states that do not have state income tax.
A player residing in Florida/Texas but playing in California would pay taxes in California for home games and the states the away games are played.
phantomofdb
@markoRock68 – one piece of the puzzle you are missing is tax credits on states. Most states have some sort of tax credit for “taxes paid to another state”.
What it means is, typically ALL of your income is taxable to your resident state. You file a nonresident tax return to every state you play in that has income tax. But then you file your resident state tax return last and take credits for the actual tax paid to the other states. If their tax is lower than your home state tax, you end up paying the additional amount on your home state as well. So a high tax state like California is going to be taxing pretty much everything to some degree
MarkoRock68
Yes exactly . Works the same way between countries with tax agreements. I work in Singapore but I’m Canadian and maintain my primary residence in Canada. I get a tax credit for the amount of tax I’ve paid in Singapore which is at a much lower rate then Canada . Keeps me from being double taxed .
gammaraze
There’s a reason why MLB players have accountants… By no means are you required to be a resident of the state in which your team plays. You can simply own a house in Texas, claim that as your residency, and rent an apartment in California. An AL West player who chooses to reside in California also chooses to be taxed on all 162 games, instead of living in Washington, Texas, or Florida where 60 games wouldn’t be taxed at all.
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@Jaa1968- Gallo has voiced many times that he would like to retire a Texas Ranger. He’s loyal and a high character guy. The Rangers wanted SS Anthony Volpe as a piece from the Yankees in a Gallo trade. The Yankees have said no to every team that has asked, saying that Volpe won’t be traded.

Mate I’m not tryna be rude or anything but you really don’t need to put the username of the person you’re replying to because of the line
xtraflamy
@tstats sometimes it’s not that clear at one level of reply hierarchy because the replies don’t always indent/group logically.
it’s also not a pain to skip over if it’s obvious to the reader, and has a side benefit of adding more clarity occasionally, so it’s a good investment of a few keystrokes if one is willing.
YankeesBleacherCreature
It helps. When I’m on my Android app, a lot of comments are displayed linear.
cwsOverhaul
Unfair. Gallo has final say, but Boras would strongly discourage bypassing a shot at FA in 1+yr unless it was an incredible offer.
SonnySteele
Wouldn’t the fact that the looming MLB/MLBPA negotiations are likely to be contentious factor into a players decision regarding an extension offer?
Monkey’s Uncle
Interesting.
Rangers29
I think it’s critical in this situation to remember that Gallo has voiced numerous times how he’d love to stay in Texas. I know it could just be fluff by a player, but it’s not to be overlooked that a player said something like that about this bad of a team.
RyanF
Absolutely. He said he doesn’t care about money and that they could figure that out later. You don’t hear very many guys say things like that. It wasn’t just your typical “I love being apart of this team and I’m here until they tell me I’m not anymore.” I think he genuinely wants to stay in Texas.
Simodine
His words will be put to the test. If he turns down the extension it’s most likely because of the money.
Jaa1968
Or his agent tells him not to take it, Which Boras would tell not to. I’d love to see Texas get back into contention.
Simodine
Agents work for the player not the other way around. He is an adult if he tells.his agent to get a deal done with Texas that’s what will happen.
He loves texas
Says he doesn’t need the highest dollar
Means if he doesn’t resign and rangers gave anywhere near his value then one of the two things he said was bs.
SonnySteele
I don’t think anyone will disagree that agents work for players. But players are young, and agents (in most cases) have been around the MLB block several times. It’s probably not hard as an agent to talk your client into doing what’s best for you the agent as opposed to what the player truly wants.
Jaa1968
Then Texas needs to build a team around him. I’d rather see him in stay in Texas than go to the Yankees
padam
He doesn’t care about money but his agent is Scott Boras. Think about that for a second. Just because he said it doesn’t mean it’s true, as much as you’d like to believe so.
stymeedone
Name me a player (other than Bauer) that says he’s looking forward to playing elsewhere!
sleepy bear
Translation: other teams up your trade offers. Ranger fans we tried to extend him.

Rangers are at least 2 years away from being competitive, and thats only if the arms all work out. Get the best prospects you can while they are still healthy and look toward 2023.
User 1104686089
I think we will start to improve next year when Cole Winn and Josh Jung start playing mlb ball
thatdudetg
Makes sense. Rangers have ~$35m committed to the books after this season with Gallos little league training partner (Kris Bryant) and Fort Worth native, Trevor story headed to free agency. Both fill huge gaps for Texas (1b/SS). With top prospect Josh Jung knocking at the door and pitchers, Winn, Crouse, and Reagans right behind. Texas may be bad this year, but they could be .500 next with Leiter and crew making them competitive for years to come.
Yep it is
The Mgmt Group lead by Jon Daniels is one of the worst in all of pro sports. What has the guy ever done by himself? He has rode Jon Hart and Nolan Ryan coattails.

Trades Mark Texiera for the face of the franchise for years to come including to trips to the World Series.
Traded for a rule five pick who had all but been given up on due to his drug abuse in previous years who lead Texas to the aforementioned World Series runs and many happy moments.
Signed the greater third baseman of all time who brought many joyous moments to Ranger fans.
Traded for the best lefty in the game in 2010 by giving up a prospect who turned out to be less than valuable in Justin Smoke.

Also noted, don’t use voice to text in this app. That brought on more typos than me texting blind would have.
Monkey’s Uncle
“Greatest third baseman of all time”????
If you mean Beltre, hey I liked him as a player but… yeah, no.
gammaraze
So clearly you believe that Brooks Robinson is the best 3rd baseman of all time, right? Because objectively there is nothing anyone can do at the plate that determines how good they are on defense, so you would HAVE to be agreeing that Beltre is the 2nd best 3rd baseman of all time, right? In which case, why are you nitpicking over 1st and 2nd? The Lebron/Jordan discussion is so tired, do you really want to argue who’s the Lebron and who’s the Jordan of 3B? And if Brooks Robinson isn’t your #1, you aren’t being objective, and subjectively Beltre can be the best 3rd baseman of all time.
Mike Schmidt, Eddie Mathews, George Brett, Chipper Jones, Wade Boggs, Brooks Robinson, Paul Molitor… How many are in the top-4 3rd Basemen of all time in these categories: WAR, JAWS, dWAR, G, R, H, 2B, HR, RBI ?? Of these Hall of Famers, Brett leads the way with 5. Adrian Beltre is top-4 in all NINE of these categories.

Spoiled Yankees fans that are so insistent that that they will make not one, but several blockbuster moves, including trading for Gallo at the trade deadline overreacting about this “rumor” in 3….2….1….
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@Eatdust666- spoiled Yankee fans? You gotta be kidding me. Not expecting any blockbuster trades for the Yankees this season. The Rangers should sign Joey Gallo to an extension considering he wants to be a Texas Ranger for the rest of his career.
bravesfan
He’s really not good
gbs42
Gallo’s not good? That’s an impressively poor take.
rocky7
Yeh, that lifetime .210 is HOF material.
gbs42
Ah, the old low-BA argument…
There’s a lot more to a player’s value than batting average, and there’s a wide span between “good” and “HOF material.”
RunDMC
I mean, he has a 140 OPS+ in 2019 & 2021. His ability to take a walk offsets his strikeouts, and when combined with his impressive slugging PCT, he’ll maintain a healthy .900 OPS. 2020 looks like it was a flash-in-the-pan and if 2021 reflects the change he started in 2019, he could be dominant for awhile. Even when he’s going through cold streaks, that high OBP and gold glove defense gives you a high floor.
gammaraze
Imagine being a career .300 hitter and having to retire because your team went and bought a candy bar, and that candy bar is better at doing you than you… oh, and you’re in the Hall of Fame, and along comes a .200 hitter who has played 1/3 the games you have and already has 50% more home runs than you…
That “Hall of Really Good” argument loses when you take a look at Home Run Baker.
gbs42
I’m struggling to comprehend this analogy.
gammaraze
@gbs42 don’t worry, there’s artistic interpretation/license going on here… but 2 years before Babe Ruth first lead the Majors in HR with a whopping 11, yes eleven led the entire majors, Home Run Baker 4-peated as the AL HR leader; his season high was 12. The Yankees acquired HR Baker and 4 years later did the same with Babe Ruth. After playing 2 years with the Sultan of Swat and witnessing an unfathomable number of dingers, HR Baker never played in the Bigs again. Home Run Baker has a career total of 96 HRs in 1575 games, owns a .307 AVG and a .805 OPS. He is in the Hall of Fame.
Joey Gallo projects to have 400 HRs (exactly) in 1575 games.
Kike Can of Corn
Daniels still has the final say and it will torpedo this team.

its_happening
Jays don’t need another OF. Which means they are all in on Gallo.
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
I find it so hard to believe the “Texas faithful” don’t want to keep Joey Gallo in a Rangers uniform? I wonder what kind of contract he is looking for as far as an extension?
Mystery Team
Really though? What about his game makes him desirable to fans? The strikeouts? The sub par defense? His .211 career BA? You can literally find a free agent every off season for cheap that does what this guy does. Why would any team give him a long term deal that’s silly? Nelson Cruz has been working off one year deals for what seems like forever and his numbers put Gallo’s to shame so I’ll ask again why would any team be willing to chain themselves to a one dimensional player for any longer than one year at a time?
rangers92
Gallo has a lot going for him. Most people look at his avg and Ks and make an assumption. If you look at his WAR and his wRC+ and his defense metrics you’ll see he’s actually pretty good.
He leads the lead in walks bc he doesn’t get many good pitches to hit. His OBP is .384. I’d rather have a guy hit .220/.384 OBP 45 hr than a guy who hits .270/.330 with 17 homeruns.

User 1104686089
This is so weird, why do people keep saying that Gallo is a bad fielder? Where do they get this?
Ducky Buckin Fent
I don’t get that one either.
A big reason I would like to see him on the Yanks *is* his defense.
billysbballz
Why would they. They want to fleece a team fir a guy who never comes up big in big spots. He strikes out just about all the time. It’s hard to watch. The Yanks have Stanton. If Texas wants Stanton and he waives we can swap players as they both are all or nothing bats. A lineup can’t have too many of those.
User 1104686089
haha this is other thing I can’t fathom. Yanks fans keep trying to palm off Stanton, it is really crazy. Guys just face it you are never getting rid of that contract, noone in their right mind would come near it.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I think most fan bases have a “what have you done for me lately” mentality.
However: Yankee fans seem to be pretty extreme about it. I’ve seen guys like Reggie Jackson, Winfield, A-Rod, Henderson, etc get booed. Stanton certainly hasn’t been the problem for us this year. But…well, you know…
JoshHolt32
Hope it gets done this is a no-brained for me if I’m the owner
RG1 4
Fire Woodward!!!
gammaraze
Can I ask why? Seriously. What on Earth do you think Chris Woodward is responsible for? The best player he had on the field in 2019 was Elvis Andrus. He doesn’t get to choose the pieces he has to work with. It’s not his fault the team doesn’t have the talent to compete; the manager can only do so much.
bbatardo
The good ole try to sign a player for an under market offer and trade them when they decline it.
Rsox
Gallo is not going to break the bank and the Rangers have no long term contracts on the books. No reason not get this done
Simodine
That all depends on the rangers offer. I dont buy him taking a real discount. Which means they may not come to an agreement and him being traded.
TribeFan88
Gallo has one of the most interesting career statistical lines in baseball, in my opinion.
.211/.337/.498, 384 H, 74 2B, 144 HR, 314 RBI
stymeedone
He’s Rob Deer with a better glove. Gallo is a solid player, but not what you build a franchise around. He gets the press because he is the best player on the team, currently.
positively_broad_st
Would Trevor Story be a target for the Rangers in the off-season? He’s from the Dallas area. Maybe if he cannot sign with an immediate contender, he tries to go home and try to win on the back end of his deal…
hiflew
I think that is a given. Most Rockies fans have naturally assumed that is where Story will end up for over a year now. Either that or he could end up in Houston if they lose Correa.
gammaraze
Why not? The Mavs target every superstar free agent they have no hope of getting, might as well put the Rangers in the same boat. The only thing stopping the Rangers from getting talent is failure to develop players and trying to undo the knot on the owners’ purse strings… But we can dream, right?
2021 can bring us Trevor Story, Kris Bryant, a long term deal with Joey Gallo, trade Porzingis to Miami, and sign Kawhi
bayareabenny
This is what is referred to in basketball as “fake hustle”.
Mystery Team
He hits home runs and singles, great. The guy’s on pace for around 13 doubles and over 200 Ks. His fielding is also nothing to write home about. He’s the perfect trade candidate not an extension guy for the Rangers. Move him and get what you can he’s no cornerstone piece.
User 1104686089
why do I keep seeing people saying this? there has never been a player, manager or analyst that has labeled Gallo a bad fielder… have you ever watched Gallo play baseball?
rocky7
Yeh, that lifetime .210 is HOF material.
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@rocky7- no Joey Gallo is not going to be a hall of famer, but he fits the Yankees to a tee. I definitely see the Bombers being a wild card team with him. Isn’t that the most important getting into the playoffs and being a surprise team? Ca$hman really needs to trade for Gallo or Kepler to save his own hide. I’m not a Boone guy, I loved Girardi. I would love Buck Showalter managing, and Andy Pettitte or CC Sabathia being our next pitching coach next season regardless of making the playoffs or not. The Yankees got to make changes within.
billysbballz
Fits Yanks to a tee? All or nothing better who strikes out in big spots! Yeah I guess do.
I wouldn’t trade Volpe, Dominguez, Duran, or Schmidt in any deal to start. And if Gallo loves Texas like he said he will just sign. Texas is trying there best to maximize his value and trade him. Nothing worse than watching a guy not make contact the majority of the time and occasionally finds one and hits a solo homer in. No thanks
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@billsbballz- he absolutely would fit the Yankees to a tee.The kind of damage he would do in the Yankees lineup sandwiched in between Judge and Stanton would be scary. I really think Max Kepler could do the same. I am a real Yankee’s fan that wants to make the playoffs this season. I don’t care if they get the 2nd wild card. Just as long as they get in. Kepler or Gallo in that lineup definitely gives them that best chance. I have no problem giving up a Gil, Vizcaino, Duran, Josh Smith or a Alcantara to do so. Maybe just 3 of them. We would still be keeping Dominguez, Schmidty, Deivi, Florial, Peraza and Volpe. What’s there not to like? Please explain.
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@billysbballz- if you hate Gallo that much then maybe the Yankees can trade for Max Kepler. I’m actually afraid to hear how you feel about him. I’m so sick and tired of looking at all these righthanded batters in the lineup all the time. There is no balance. Why do you think teams throw out all their righthanded starters all the time against the Yankees? Smh
angt222
Texas needs to cash in on Gallo.
nyy17 2
I’ve gotten sour too many times on Gallo. I prefer buying milk in half gallos.
j_butte
His value is so hard to peg. 2 years ago he looked like one of the best players in baseball, then he gets hurt and last year he was awful. A package of him and Kennedy would work for the Braves. I’d like to know what the cost would be.
Matt_Angel_Bronco_Laker
I feel like this is a smoke and mirrors report. I think they’re trying to get a larger return for a guy with prodigious power.
Gallo reminds me a lot of Chris Davis.
User 1104686089
well he shouldn’t, I have actaully met Davis back when he was in AAA. Gallo is far more athletic and a much better all around baseball player than Davis. Gallo is not one deminsional, he runs well, plays great defense. People just get hung up on the low BA.
Matt_Angel_Bronco_Laker
No disagreement that Gallo is more versatile defensively (plays more positions). But their height, weight, power, OPS (comparable to their ages), fielding percentages are very similar.
User 1104686089
Davis was a 1B, even the best defender at that position is signifigantly less interesting than a corner outfielder. Gallo is one of the better corner outfielders around. He also runs well (i.e., steals bases). I just don’t really see the comparison here. I guess the power profile and OPS makes some sense, but Gallo provides so much more than Davis as a complete player, makes his floor so much higher.
LordD99
The new Adam Dunn at the plate with an even lower BA. Or maybe Chris Davis is a better comp. When the skills go it will be rapid. A five year deal still only takes him to 32, but I wouldn’t go beyond that.
He remains spectacularly streaky and he’s had a hot month. Basically, they’re negotiating at a high point. Not sure if they’re serious. Might be posturing as they negotiate with teams to trade him.
hd-electraglide
Season ticket holder take on Gallo. Well above average defensively. Strong accurate arm. Always gives 100%, even on obvious infield ground ball outs. Can hit ball a country mile when he makes contact. Walks a lot, strikes out a lot. Having watched him ever since he made it to big club, the problem I see at the plate is this….most pitchers don’t intentionally pitch around him. For the most part, when he draws a walk, he has swung and missed on pitches he should be making good contact with, one of my reasons of taking exception to grading him solely on OBP, and or OPS. Has over 1700 AB’s and to my knowledge, has no more sacrifice flies that I can count on one hand if that many, but he has had plenty of opportunities. He is supposed to be a power hitting corner outfielder that can drive in runs in critical situations, but has performed that duty marginally. Now, do the Rangers need to trade him? One one hand I say yes, however 2 or 3 years ago, probably could have gotten a king’s ransom for him, now not so much. The Rangers are 3-5 years away from being competitive. I like Gallo, but I don’t think he is the one to build a team around, but then again they have no one else at the big league level to do that either…..what a quandary.
User 1104686089
the problem is the coming roster crunch at the AA level. The Rangers have a million decisions to make concerning guys that will have to be added to the 40-man coming up. If you are trading Gallo I suspect it will be for young guys that are down in the AA range and then quickly promoting Jung, Winn and Walker to AAA. Pretty tough quandary I agree
RG1 4
12 losses in a row, non competitive losses at that. Woodward can’t motivate the team. Fire his ass before the team gets back to Arlington! Worst manager they’ve EVER had!
hd-electraglide
They look like they’ve given up. Bases loaded, no outs, K, DP….
johnnygunz
I think they’re scared of a Chris Davis 2.0 situation where they lose faith and give up on him then he goes on to crank HR’s. But….he could end up being the Chris Davis of 2018.
