TODAY: The Mets are one of the teams interested in Anderson, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports (Twitter link). A trade might have to come together quickly, as Heyman writes that the Pirates would ideally like to move Anderson before his scheduled start tonight against the Brewers.
JULY 25: The Pirates are likely to trade starter Tyler Anderson before this week’s trade deadline passes, per the MLB Network’s Jon Morosi (via Twitter). That’s hardly surprising, as it’s quite literally been the plan all season, notes Jason Mackey of PGSportsNow (via Twitter).
Morosi does note that Anderson is particularly appealing to the Dodgers and Phillies, who like his manageable salary as they try to minimize potential tax bills. Of course, if Anderson’s salary makes him an asset to high-payroll teams, it’s surely an asset for low-payroll teams as well. Anderson is playing on a one-year, $2.5MM contract and headed for free agency after the season. In theory, he won’t cost much to acquire, but there’s still the matter of finding the right piece that fits the Pirates’ vision.
The 31-year-old, after all, is valuable largely because he’s eminently available. He has, in 560 career innings, offered up mostly the dull consistency of a back-end starter. For some teams right now, the Phillies among them, that’s tremendously valuable.
With 103 1/3 innings, Anderson has crossed the century mark for just the third time in his career. His 4.35 ERA/4.26 FIP would be his best numbers since his rookie season, but they’re also right in line with what he’s shown since leaving Coors Field. In these past two seasons with the Giants and Pirates, Anderson has logged 163 innings in 31 appearances (29 starts) with a 4.36 ERA/4.30 FIP, 33.9 percent groundball rate, 18.4 percent strikeout rate, and 7.2 percent walk rate. That’s 2.1 fWAR over roughly a full season of work.

Meet the Mets, meet the Mets,
Step right up and greet the Mets.
Bring your kiddies, bring your wife,
Guaranteed to have the time of your life.
Because the Mets are really sockin’ the ball,
Knockin’ those home runs over the wall.
East side, West side, everybody’s coming down,
To meet the M-E-T-S Mets, of New York town.
Francys01
To the Dodgers. The Phillies are good, they could acquire another pitcher like Zach Davies.

Knocking those broads & the cops they’ll call. East Side West Side sweet hookers around,

You’re about 35 years too late with that lame attempt at satire. It wouldn’t have been clever or amusing then either.

As a Phillies fan I always thought it went like this..
“Beat the Mets, beat the Mets
Step right up and beat the Mets..”

Well speaking honestly if the Mets don’t pick up another pitcher and one big bat the Phillies might win the division All year the Mets have been struggling with runners on base I’m shocked they are in 1st it goes to show you pitching wins

Bro… Pirates? Stop it. You’re a terrible version of the A’s.

In other news, in the dictionary under redundant it says “See: redundant”
In all seriousness, Anderson has been exactly what the Pirates were hoping for, and I hope he does well wherever he lands.
Pete'sView
Tyler Anderson is the definition of “meh.”
Todd Kemmerer
As a pirate fan I agree. But one thing is he can eat 5 ip with 3 r or less for a 5th starter is something teams will hold if value. U could be wrong I think I heard he has 15 starts of 5ip + and 3 or less runs. On a playoff team with a really good bullpen those are wins
13Morgs13
Phillies need someone like Kelly(DBacks). We need a controllable SP
DarkSide830
Caleb Smith is a nice stealth get. I’d like to propose a trade with him, Soria, and Clippard for a handfull of lottery-ticket types.
VonPurpleHayes
That’s not a bad idea. I don’t think Soria and Clippard are too great (certainly an upgrade of Kintzler), but Smith is exactly what the Phillies need.

“He has, in 560 career innings, offered up mostly the dull consistency of a back-end starter.”
Dude can write.
Colt 45
In fact, most of these guys are pretty good writers.
alwaysgo4two
Any consistent major league starter, as rare as they are, should never be referred to as dull. He’s a soft tossing lefty. Pretty much every team has at least one.
seamaholic 2
Threw pretty hard when he was a young buck with the Rockies. Guess he’s a different pitcher now.
richt
That’s a good one, but what the hell is this?
“ The 31-year-old, after all, is valuable largely because he’s eminently available.”
A lot of words that seem to say nothing. He’s valuable because he’s available? Um, what?
lemonlyman
There aren’t a lot of starters available right now, so the fact that he is available makes him valuable, whereas if there were a lot of starters available he’d have less value.
BeforeMcCourt
It’s 5 days before the deadline. Guys are available
bmcferren
besides the return for Frazier, all the Pirates are looking for is International Spending Allotment for everyone else they are about to trade
Anderson, RichRod, Stratton, Sheve, Moran, Gamel, Polanco, Newman Kuhl and Difo
Entire 2022 International class will be members of the Pirates organization
mlb1225
Last time the Pirates got international money was with Jarrod Dyson when the White Sox gave them the right to spend $243,300 more on INT. prospects. That money was used toward Po-Yu Chan who was one of the top high school prospects in Taiwan.
bmcferren
also that Australian outfielder Solomon with the money from the Marte trade
Mendoza Line 215
MLB- I am amazed that anyone gave anything for Jarrod Dyson.
He wasn’t any good even when he was good.
bigdaddyk
Don’t think they trade Moran and Stratton plus rich Rod will fetch players. I would gladly take a comp pick for difo Gamel
YourDreamGM
No other team wanted him to be a starter. Fans and media should be asking their gm why they didn’t sign this guy. Instead they paid double or triple or more for older lesser pitchers coming off mutiple weak seasons with nothing to suggest they would improve. Anderson even better than his numbers show. Was left in too long to eat innings and looks stronger of late. Will provide excellent value for some team.
Monkey’s Uncle
That’s right, I forgot that he had to suck up a couple of extra innings in a couple of starts because of the bullpen being fried. The Pirates make this kind of veteran starter signing almost every year, but rarely does it work out this well. (See also: Cahill, Trevor).
YourDreamGM
@Monkey’s Uncle They wanted Anderson. They needed Cahill to replace Brault. Cahill wasn’t consistent. Showed moments of solidness. He isn’t healthy, and if he was he wouldn’t fetch much. But being able to start or relieve has some value. These veterans provide value even if they can’t be traded. Cahill has a nice curve, if he just gave advice to help one young pitcher it’s worth 1.5 million.
mlb1225
Pirates were hoping to get both Anderson and Cahill to do what Anderson has done this year. Isn’t always gonna happen. You always take a small gamble on these kinds of one year deals.
Mendoza Line 215
Dream, you are right on once again.
I always have been a proponent of “ throwing out” say the two or three best and worst starts to get an average.
Anderson has had about three bad games and on a bad team that is excellent. Also, they were all pretty bad.My guess is that his ERA without them is no higher than about 3.50.
I am not a proponent of receiving international spending money unless you cannot get real prospects for someone. It seems to me that they need to get at least a solid AA player and a good lower minors player for him.If not, keep him and sign him for next year.
YourDreamGM
@Mendoza Line 215 He should fetch at least 1 high upside prospect. Maybe throw in a reliever for a higher end prospect. But hypothetically if he had lesser value, it’s better to receive anything than nothing. Can always sign him in free agency. It’s also very likely he would like to go to a contender and pitch in post season. Most everyone likes to win and make more money. He knew when he signed that if he did well he was going to be traded.
Noel1982
This is going be the Mets big or should I say. Bigger pitching addition via trade
bucsfan0004
Hopefully there ends up being a decent market for this guy and the Bucs can choose the best offer
mlb1225
Anderson is the quintesential back of the rotation arm. He’s went 5 innings in all of his outings so far this year and has given up 3 or less ER in 15 of said outings. Not a dominating ace by any means, but goes out and gives your team the chance to win every time he pitches. He’s a perfect fit on a contender who already has 2-4 good starters and looking to round out the back of the rotation heading down the stretch. Consistency and durability are two things some teams pray to have in their #4 starter.
Waddupitsyahboy
If the M’s are really in on Frazier, then I’m sure DiPoto will try and package deal the both of them.
BuJoBi
This is the most obvious post ever mlbtr. It’s been well know for 2 months now Andersen is gonna be moved. Therefore until he gets moved it’s not news anymore, we have discussed Andersen being traded since may and all the reasons why he will be traded, lemme know when it happens
bucsfan0004
Mlbtr has posted a lot of “non-news” news lately. They must be doing something right – both of us dopes clicked the link.
Bob Melvin
We are looking at moving Frankie Montas to the bullpen and acquiring Tyler Anderson. We have significant interest. Bob
Mendoza Line 215
Bob-I do not think that you are the manager of the Oakland A’s.If so,I think that you would have better things to do.
But,in reality,you could be.
You are indeed smart enough to know that Anderson would be a plus for any team.
BC got this one right.
I hope that he is smart enough though to get good players in a trade for him.
DadsInDaniaBeach
Not sure who or what the Phillies will possibly get, but I know one thing for sure and that I’ve had enough of Vince Velasquez.
On a bright note, it was nice seeing Seranthony tossing the ball yesterday. When he comes back it’ll be nice. Most likely next year. No matter as it will be a start to right the pen. Again!
Mendoza Line 215
Dads- It is not VV’s fault.
I have followed his career somewhat since the trade for him.
He is clearly not a starting pitcher, even though he thinks that he is.He should be a long man in the bullpen.
There is no question in my mind that he could flourish as one if told that that was his job.
In my mind,it is pretty evident, and the Phillies have done him a disservice in this regard.
brucebochyisthemarlboroman
That was VV’s role early in the year. He was moved back to the rotation more out of necessity because Moore and Chase Anderson have been abysmal.
Mendoza Line 215
Bruce-I understand that but that is DD’s and JG’s fault for not having an alternative.
They complain about their bullpen but one of their best is not actually relieving.
DarkSide830
he never looked good even when in the pen. it’s not the team’s fault – he’s just not that good.
Mendoza Line 215
But he has never been given the opportunity in the bullpen because he was never told that that was his only role.
He is good enough to have been given an opportunity just like they screwed up on Kingery.
These GM’s have Ivy League educations and statistics en masse but common sense is often lacking.
trophyhusband
Mendoza Line, I agree with everything you said. 100 percent. He has no business in that rotation. Even despite Anderson and Moore’s issues. I actually believe he might be able to help the bullpen.
I just can’t understand the thought process of continuing to bring him out there every 5th day. Through 2 different front offices and 3 different managers and I don’t know how many different pitching coaches, the powers-that-be still feel he is a starter. What am I missing?
Mendoza Line 215
You are missing nothing.Stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again with the same stupid result.
DadsInDaniaBeach
Vince wasn’t particularly good out of the pen either..he has the stuff, but if you listened to the broadcasters, he would be very good, then lose concentration and flop a hittable fast ball right down the middle..MLB players can flat out hit a fast ball..the aim is to move it and spot it.. Velasquez doesn’t do that.
The Phils had the same thing in a more talented Nick Pavetta..we all saw the same thing last week..The very first thing that doesn’t go Nick’s way and he just unravels..loses all composure..Too bad too, because Pavetta can be outstanding.,.
Mendoza Line 215
Dads-I am not necessarily disagreeing with you.I am just saying that he has clearly failed as a starter, and his only chance is in the bullpen. If they kept him there instead of flip flopping him,it could lessen his inconsistencies, especially since he would be pitching a lot less innings.
Buccrazy
Anderson will be a good get for something for nothing. Pirates left him hang out a few times.
Going to RichRod, has not been so good lately. Under control until 24, don’t think he will be dealt.
Shreve will be dealt. Has only pitched like 26 innings should be pretty fresh. Decent numbers.
Greg Polanco. Has been great for 2 weeks after the injury. Any chance he gets dealt? Bob nutting will be looking to get the 1.4 mil he sent to San Diego back no doubt. Maybe they can split the awful contract with someone.
Mendoza Line 215
Buc-They will have to send a minor leaguer with Polanco if they want to rid themselves of the contract. He has played better recently though.I wonder whether he will get a ML contract next year from someone.
Shreve has been a sleeping beauty.Again,I would not just give him away for nothing.
Richrod still will command a good return. He was pitching extremely well early and many teams want relievers.
Anderson is the one that they should get a reasonably good return on,not just a low minor league flyer or international pool money.
BC needs to get relative returns like he did with Taillon and Musgrove and not the lesser returns that he got with Bell and certainly not the ones for Marte, which in essence was a salary dump.
Buccrazy
ML– I was thinking of the Liriano deal with Toronto when I was thinking of Polanco. Yes it would be a dump of sorts, but he could also be useful to someone. He is a good baserunner as well as having some pop. I do think he is going to get another chance in MLB at any rate.
Rich Rod is an interesting case. He probably still gets traded but I dont think its a 100 percent certainty. The return is going to be less than it would have seemed in june.
Anderson and Shreve are useful players, but they wont move anyones needle. They are also going to be free agents, so tough to get too much from either. Best case is for a couple teams to be interested and that could drive the price up. Im not going to lose too much sleep if they dont get so much for these guys, pending free agents. Rich Rod will be the one to watch IMO.
Mendoza Line 215
Well put Buc.With the underwhelming return on Frazier I would rather see him keep these guys.I know that they would want to go to a contender, but other GM’s will learn of BC’s reputation if he is giving players away. Shreve,,Anderson, and RichRod have all performed well. The Pirates deserve to get decent to good prospects in return.
bigdaddyk
They will just buy out Gregory after this season for 3 million they have no future salary commitment next year so no need to dump Gregory.
They got a potential Frazier clone who can play ss plus 2 other players how was that an underwhelming return?
We need C and low level pitchers that aren’t close to rule 5 cause we have a crunch coming
Mendoza Line 215
It is my understanding that all three minor leaguers will need to be on the 40 man roster in one year.
How many middle infielders do you need?
They need a young catcher still. The top draft choice, while very good,is not guaranteed.
Potential Frazier clones are not hard to come by.
Players leading the leagues in hits are hard to come by.There is only one each year.
How many players can play both second base and left field well?
This trade reminds me of some of the early ones that NH made.
jimmyz
I think in a few years Liover Peguero and to a lesser extent Brennan Malone will make the Marte trade look good for the Bucs. They’re both really young but have a solid foundation of tools/ability to build upon. Give them some time to develop.
Mendoza Line 215
I am not saying that they are not good minor league players but how many of this type of player actually make it to become a good ML player?
Marte was a fine tradeable commodity and even is now with 1 1/2 less years.
And the Pirates have many middle infielders. How many do you need?
bklynphil
Dodgers don’t need a guy like him. BERRIOS!
Bob333
Phillies should be selling 500 club at best time to start rebuilding PLEASE
sdbaseballguy
The Dodgers are in a pennant race, this guy ain’t helping.
seamaholic 2
David Price is starting (and losing) games for them. Tyler Anderson would definitely help.
sdbaseballguy
Price is 4-0 with a 3.35 era. Do you even watch the Dodgers play?
sdbaseballguy
You know what funny about your comment? David Price has never lost a game for the Dodgers.
Mendoza Line 215
Sd-Not so.His ERA without three games is about 3.50.
That means that he pitched well in 15 games.
I do not think that the Dodgers brasss is stupid enough to totally disregard a pitcher such as that as there are as many starts in the regular season for a strong #5 as there are for a #1.
sdbaseballguy
The old let’s pick stats that make my argument routine. Starting your statement with, “without 3 games” is ridiculous. The rest of your statements make no sense either. As predicted, the Dodgers ignored Anderson BECAUSE HE DOESN’T MOVE THE NEEDLE. Picking up 5th starters doesn’t win championships. Getting Scherzer does and that’s what they’ll probably do.
Mendoza Line 215
Sd- Wrong again.Picking up fifth starters helps to get you into the playoffs. In the highly competitive western division that is very important. You cannot win a championship if you do not get in.
I would be interested in Scherzer if I were the Dodgers also.Much, much more than Anderson. But they are smart enough to know what you clearly cannot understand that Anderson pitched well in 5 of 6 games,or 83% of the time. Also, the 5th starter is almost important as the first during the regular season as previously noted.
Scherzer obviously is most important during the playoffs.Anderson may or may not get to pitch in relief in them.
Maybe they have a deal almost done and they will get the prize pitcher.Maybe they don’t.Maybe they think that they do not need a fifth starter.Maybe they are smart enough too know that injuries occur. They have plenty of money to stack pitchers in case they have physical problems that will occur even more often as pitchers have begun to get into areas that they did not encounter last year.
I think that we disagree on the importance of having a good fifth starter for this particular season especially.
mgomrjsurf
White Sox or so on not in on Scherzer and other big name starter who might be available.
Shrutefarm
Back end of the rotation pitcher. Can help eat some innings. If he is a starter for your team in the post season, you need more pitching help.
