7:36PM: Painter signed for a $3.9MM bonus, MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki reports, landing under the $4,197,300 slot value. As for Philadelphia’s other picks, MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis reports that second-rounder Ethan Wilson signed for a $1,507,600, matching the slot price for the 49th overall pick.
6:15PM: The Phillies have made quick work of the top end of their 2021 draft class, announcing that they have come to terms with all 11 of their picks through the draft’s first 11 rounds. This includes first-round pick Andrew Painter, the high school right-hander selected 13th overall. No financial terms were announced for any of the signings — the 13th overall selection has an assigned slot price of $4,197,300.
Baseball America ranked Painter 15th on their list of prospects in this year’s draft class, while MLB Pipeline and ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel each had Painter 18th, Fangraphs 22nd, and The Athletic’s Keith Law put the righty in 24th. As McDaniel notes, the additional risk involved in drafting high school pitchers might be the only red flag against Painter, since “basically everything Painter…does grades as a 55 or 60, and the frame, delivery and feel all check out.”
To that point, Pipeline and BA’s grades give high marks to Painter’s four-pitch arsenal, headlined by a fastball that sits in the 93-97mph range and is already considered a plus pitch. There could be more potential for future velocity since the 18-year-old is already either 6’6″ or 6’7″ and weighs between 210-230 pounds. Painter’s control is also very highly regarded, which Baseball America notes is something of a rarity for a high school arm.

I like this draft class. On paper solid Phillies draft
DarkSide830
im not quite sure, but hopefully im wrong. dont pride myself in being a great scout anyways.
Inside Out
Assuming Painter will just go to instructs, looking forward to Wilson at Clearwater
DarkSide830
why no GCL action?
bobtillman
Because there is no GCL any more? (Florida Development League).
No knock there. I’m an Milb aficionado, who used to be able to identify every affiliate of every team. Now I’m constantly checking who belongs to who.
bseventeen
The GCL is just renamed as the Florida Complex League. Still have games against other organizations, just no fans and no box scores.
DarkSide830
but isnt “instructs” assumed to be the FIL? that’s different
bobtillman
T\there are box scores for every game at milb.com

Painter and Abel give me hope for the future. Could develop into a great 1-2 punch

I heard Bryce Harper was severely dehydrated! What a travesty clearly a sign of kapler depriving his players of Gatorade and Powerade or even pure water in favor of some hippie liquids !
DarkSide830
lol

Brawndo has electrolytes!
gbs42
@Noel – what are hippie liquids?
Noel1982
Probably something like peyote drink or some Jimson tea

We’re probably looking at two future Cy Young’s if I’m being honest.
sirandrews
I agree. I have drafted painter for a few years now in every ootp. Dude is going to be an absolute stud. Also love Abel.

Keep those expectations low

I wonder why other teams don’t lock up their players this quickly? Most teams clearly have agreement parameters in place before players are picked, so it always surprises me that some of these drag out weeks on end.
bobtillman
I’m pretty sure this year’s deadline is August 1, so they have to move quickly. But ya, I remember one of the MLB network guys saying his agent tried to change the deal after he had agreed to a certain number. All kinds of theater goes on.
BeforeMcCourt
In past players would hold out till right before end of signing period, hoping team ups their Offer instead of risking they lose their pick. And if they’re trying to use resources later in draft, that could hold up other negotiations
i believe they made it much shorter deadline to sign picks this year, so we’re seeing teams get moving a bit more this year imo

Attention Mark Polishuk and all trade rumors writers. Stop deleting comments you don’t agree with and stop blocking comments on articles you think might be controversial. It’s called freedom of speech whether the commenters agree with your opinions or not.
philliesphan77
Yeah…so they can delete anything they want. That’s not what freedom of speech means.

It’s a private website. You have no right to make them let you rant on their website
Go to 4chan or Reddit or start your own site
If you’re gonna rant about constitutional rights, at least understand them. Like how the 2nd amendment is written to apply only to militias not private citizens owning assault rifles. But hey, different convo
stevetampa
“Militia” – exactly right. I rarely hear people use that term. It is conveniently omitted when discussing controls.
Rsk3228
The right to bear arms and a well-regulated militia are two separate clauses in the 2nd amendment.

Where’s the thumbs down button?
timpa
That’s not what freedom speech means, nor how it works.
Freedom of speech is protection from the GOVERNMENT locking you up. Of course that’s not even absolute. Yell fire in a crowded theater and cause people to be injured/killed in a stampede and you going to jail. Use racial slurs and you can be charged for a hate crime.
But in terms of expressing your opinions there is no legal requirement from any website, news publication, tv station, etc… To allow ANYONE to use their private service to say ANYTHING they want.

Wowwee,
Sounds like someone skipped civics class(es)…

Question: Why do some players sign for less than their slot value? Aren’t they selling themselves short from the get-go?
YankeesBleacherCreature
A lot of these draftees have ceiling and floor money figures in place with interested teams prior to the draft. A handshake agreement is usually forged minutes before they’re actually drafted. If an agent reneges later, good luck getting that team to do business with you later.
JoeBrady
They don’t draft in exact order. If someone drops from say, 10th to 20th because there might be an issue signing him, you can still sign the guy, but it would likely take more money than the 20-slot to sign him.
A guy like Mayer might be a good example. Once Davis was drafted #1, TX and Det both wanted pitchers, so Mayer dropped down to 4th. He won’t get the #1 slot money, since he wasn’t #1, but his agent will make the case that he has #1 talent.
The RS are happy he dropped, so they might offer him #2 or #3 type of bonus. But in order to pay Mayer more, they must pay someone else less. So they might draft a college senior that was ranked as a 11th round talent, but the RS might draft him in the 6th round, knowing he is going to accept a lot less than 6th round money. They could actually draft me in the 6th, and sign me for $25k, knowing I will never pay, and then use that savings to pay off Mayer.
BeforeMcCourt
Cubs 6th rounder signed for 1,000 bucks. After taxes, he probably can’t afford to buy himself a decent laptop
But they saved something like 200K+ In pool space, so your point somewhat stands. But doubt you’re getting 25K haha
Lloyd Emerson
Sounds a bit convoluted, but it makes sense. Thank you for the response and the explanation.
