10:48 am: Bohm has tested positive for COVID-19, Girardi told reporters (including Matt Gelb of the Athletic). He’ll remain in isolation for at least ten days.
10:17 am: The Phillies announced they’ve placed starting pitcher Aaron Nola, third baseman Alec Bohm and relievers Connor Brogdon and Bailey Falter on the COVID-19 injured list. Infielder Nick Maton and pitchers Mauricio Llovera, Damon Jones and Cristopher Sánchez have been recalled to replace them on the active roster.
Bohm was pulled from last night’s game as part of health and safety protocols. There’s no confirmation he or any of the other players involved have tested positive for COVID-19. Players can be placed on the COVID-19 IL for exposure to the virus or for experiencing virus-like symptoms. There is no minimum stint on the COVID IL.
Nola had been scheduled to start this afternoon’s game against the Red Sox. It’s not clear who will get the ball, although it seems likely manager Joe Girardi will conduct some sort of impromptu bullpen game. With the All-Star Break beginning tomorrow, the Phils can leverage a handful of arms to get through today’s contest and reevaluate the pitching staff before their doubleheader with the Marlins next Friday.
smh
Momentum killer. This game was really important. Symbolically getting to .500 at the ASG is a big deal. The team hit its low point recently, but finally started clicking when Didi came back. Battling back to .500 would be a huge boost. It could also determine if they’re buyers or sellers at the deadline. Most importantly, the Phillies are just 4.5 games behind the Mets. Every game is gigantic at this point. And the Phillies bullpen is the worst in the league, so a bullpen game against one of the best teams in baseball doesn’t sound very fun. This is a killer.
There is always hope that the bats gets motivated to pick up the pitchers. I am not a betting man, but if i was i’d stay far away from this game. But anything can happen in baseball.
Oh definitely. I’m not writing it off as a loss before it starts, but Boston is very good. This game was going to be tough even if the Phillies had Nola on the mound. But they’re losing their starter, 3rd basemen, and a bunch of key bullpen pieces. It’s tough to recover from that.
wouldnt be the first time. this team swept the Brewere shorthanded. it does seem they sometimes play better when missing guys.
It would be a series win not a sweep they lost the 1st game and who are brewere its the Boston red sox I’ve never heard anyone call them that before
no, not saying it would be a sweep, just in general this team can win shorthanded
And they won! As usual, great call Darkside.
You’re spot on Von. This is a momentum game. A victory today can set the tone for the second half of the season. The biggest hurdle in today’s game is the bullpen. Nola hasn’t exactly been top form, and Bohm has only just recently picked up some hits. I think the loss of them today does not necessarily limit the ability to win, but that bullpen…ugh.
The Phillies are like pathetic gamblers who keep thinking they’re just one lucky break from building a dynasty. It’s never going to happen.
Lol. It happened before. They’re 4.5 out of first place in a division where no one is impressive. They could make the playoffs. I think the Mets will, but the Phillies overtaking them isn’t insanity. Of course they’re no where near the Dodgers, Padres…etc.
Not to jinx it, but it could turn out to be a momentum builder. And the Mets are losing.
How is it that those players are sitting in the dugout with the rest of the starting nine and yet no one else is affected?
@Pax There’s a lot of confusion around COVID protocols. These players may not even have COVID. It could be another bug or something. Protocols just require them to sit out.
??
“Bohm has tested positive for COVID-19”
Haha. The headline changed since I posted this. So yea. It’s COVID.
And the guys sitting out (besides Bohm) are likely guys not vaccinated. The vaccinated players are not required to sit out.
Probably not good to assume they’re not vaccinated. Even vaccinated players can catch covid. But the good thing about being vaccinated is that their bodies should be able to fight it off. (ie it won’t be as severe and likely won’t be hospitalized)
Is Wheeler available for an inning or two?
i think they dont want to prevent him from pitching in the ASG
I’d hope they do what’s best for the Phillies, not for an exhibition game.
In the old days, pitchers threw a couple of simulated innings on the side in between starts. Two innings of relief shouldn’t keep him from pitching an inning or two in the A-S game.
COVID is so retro
I hate to hear this. Games should be decided by the best 26.
I think it’d be cool if MLB let every team reset their roster at the break, regardless of how recently a player was sent down. Teams could adjust for players who were injured, or who were held out because of the A-S game.
If only there was a vaccine.
Just so selfish not getting a vaccine. Knowing you could effect others like your teammates.
True, but we don’t know (as far as I’ve seen) that Bohm didn’t get vaccinated. Lets not flog him for being selfish in the absence of all the facts.
If the vaccinations are 95% effective, that means a few vaccinated people will get it anyway. Albeit in those “breakthrough” cases it is much less likely to result in hospitalization or death.
Bohm aside, it can be assumed the other players who can’t play were not vaccinated. Hence why they can’t play and others exposed to Bohm can.
My company still sends people home if they’ve gotten the vaccine and if they’ve been exposed. “Abundance of caution”.
@bhambrave Good policy, but baseball allows vaccinated players to play.
I didn’t know that. Thanks.
Hold up, Covid is still a thing in our society!
Morons. It’s inexcusable that every player isn’t vaccinated. Absolutely no reason for this to happen.
As said before, people can still get it with the vaccination.
That sucks. At least it wasn’t PEDs because he sucks right now and it would be a shame if he was this bad and on the juice.
*Antonio Bastardo has left the chat*
Amazing – for as frustrating as the Phillies have been, they hit the ASG Break at .500, 2nd in the NL East, and only 3.5 games behind the Mets.
Remember, whatever you do, DO NOT disrespect Covid or the vaccine. Tony Franks will delete your comment immediately. Feel free to insult humans about their baseball opinions, and otherwise be rude about everything else though.
Some of the Team Leaders are telling the others not to get covid shot.Name these people so we know who the IDIOTS are. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
@Bob333 I read this to, but as a lifelong Phillies fan, it’s probably best not to listen to the Philly media who often stirs the pot for no good reason. I’m not saying there’s no truth to it, but I’m not believing anything the Philly sports media says.
is the Gelb? if he’s going to say things and neither name figures or numbers then his credibility is shot. how exactly is this supposedly just an issue with this team and no one else? makes no darn sense.
*is this
You want people outed for a personal medical decision?
You know what that sounds like?
Grim_work Then they should continue to wear mask and not be spreaders but these idiots touch, hug and don’t follow the rules if not vaccinated.MLB needs to enforce the rules and so do the Philiies.I don’t want people outted im not Joe Biden sending people to see who
hav been vaccinated but RULES are Rules
I want to know which Leaders are saying this not who the idiots who did not get shots are.
Players who were vaccinated now saying this caused injurie to them, tired, sore back, yes the shot causes that to some people. You are professionals suppose to be in top shape.Suck it up.I had covid and don’t wish it on anybody,The 1st shot I was a little tired for a day and Im
old compared to these soft players. When I did go back to work 8hrs was rough I had to work thru it.This is why this team is 500 team no heart bunch of SOFTEES
How about all the other teams who had their shots not complaing of injuries
