It might have seemed silly a few years ago to suggest that the Padres would soon have to make any decisions regarding the luxury tax — San Diego only reached $100MM in total payroll once prior to the 2020 season — but the Friars now find themselves roughly $6MM from the $210MM luxury barrier. And while many teams who are so close to the tax line are loath to actually cross the threshold, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that Padres ownership is willing to make that concession as the trade deadline approaches.
Padres general manager A.J. Preller recently indicated that he’d like to upgrade his lineup in an effort to coax more consistent production out of the group, and the Padres have struggled to unexpected levels in the rotation. Blake Snell hasn’t pitched up to his previous standards, and the Friars are currently without Dinelson Lamet (forearm inflammation), Ryan Weathers (fractured ankle) and Adrian Morejon (Tommy John surgery). Last summer’s big-ticket acquisition, Mike Clevinger, underwent Tommy John surgery over the winter, so it’s been known for quite awhile that he wouldn’t be a factor in 2021.
The Padres have consistently been connected to Rangers slugger Joey Gallo, whom Preller knows quite well from his time as a Rangers assistant general manager. Gallo would be an upgrade in right field over Wil Myers, and since he’s controllable through the 2022 season, he’d be a multi-year improvement for the lineup. Gallo is hitting .233/.391/.510 and pacing MLB in total walks and walk percentage, and he’s been one of the game’s hottest hitters since early June: .282/.444/.748 in his past 133 plate appearances.
That said, Gallo himself wouldn’t take the Padres over the tax barrier, and he’s just one of multiple possibilities. Passan suggests more broadly that the Padres are open to adding a “significant” bat (Gallo included). Several others would fit that billing as well. The Marlins and Cubs are expected to trade Starling Marte and Kris Bryant before the trade deadline. The Mariners and the Orioles will be getting offers on Mitch Haniger and Trey Mancini, even if the preference for both clubs would be to hold onto them. If the Reds’ current slide continues, it’s at least feasible that they’d consider deals involving Nick Castellanos, who can opt out of his contract at season’s end.
Regardless of which bat the Padres zero in on, it’ll likely be one of multiple moves the Padres make, given their aggressive front office and the simultaneous need in the rotation.
As a rangers fan, I’d love to see some young arms come back in a return for Joey Gallo
If you’re trading Gallo, you need close to major league ready bats. You’ve assembled a nice rotation of arms in AA so you’re looking for offense for your best offensive player. Not sure who that would be. I know you can never have enough pitching but the outfield is where you need to build some depth. Have nice infielders like Jung Foscue and Huff (if he doesn’t catch).
I think the Rangers should just get the best package they can. If it means guys in the high minors, so be it. If it means guys in A ball with crazy upside, they should consider that to. This idea that they NEED major league ready bats is just a piss poor way of managing a rebuild. Don’t worry about positions, this can (and most likely will) be changed. Gallo was a 3B in the minors. Kiner-Falefa was a catcher. Aquire the most talent you can and then sort through it all once they are in a position to compete.
That’s fair and you make great points. You’re right about getting best available. I will correct you on one thing is that IKF was only catching to try to be more versatile and get some at bats. He was drafted as a SS and played that mostly in the minors.
I regret to inform you, I do not read bleacher nation and have no intention of ever going to bleacher nation nor commenting on the site. What you have encountered is yet another person who uses the same movie character as their profile pic.
I know shocking, unbelievable that someone on a baseball site may use a baseball character for their avatar.
I would suggest not getting too emotionally worked up about what any idiot, including me., says on an anonymous thread. It is clearly not good for your mental health.
Looks like you’ve got yourself a stalker, Steve…….
@iang2424 bro the Rangers are in the early stages of a rebuild. Trading for major league ready anything would be counterproductive for them.
@Tcsbaseball- how does Luis Gil and Alexander Vizcaino sound for Joey Gallo?
Why would the Yankees trade two young arms for Gallo, especially when the team needs a left-handed hitter and a centerfielder? Gallo doesn’t play centerfield and rightfield is occupied. Can he play left-field? I am not sure he’s worth it. I’d prefer Starling Marte’.
Gallo has played centerfield. With his arm and speed, he could essentially play any of the outfield positions.
It makes no difference, since there is not chance that Gallo goes that cheap. But why would you object to trade two non-prospects for an AS player with 1.5 years left?
@stevelieb- Gallo has played centerfield and so has Aaron Judge. So that wouldn’t really be a big problem. Gallo can also play left field. I would think Texas would have some interest in Domingo German and Clint Frazier also? Maybe the Yankees trade Gil or Vizcaino with those 2 players for Gallo. Seems pretty worth it to me.
The Yankees are 6th in the AL in Home Runs, 13th in Runs scored, and last in RBI’s. They don’t need a slugger they need someone who can get on base and hit more than just solo HR’s
What value does Frazier have at this point?
If you trade him to the Pirates or Mets they already have Frazier jerseys?
What can the Yankees get from the Japanese giants for Clinton Frazier .?
.
Gallo has played 55 games in center – 38 games in 2019. He marks well but he’s not a centerfielder first. He’s a corner outfielder, predominately right. Gil is j ok r had been considered a solid prospect. I don’t think Frazier gets you much at this point. Maybe Andujar
Or florial
“I got you an Outfielder. He used to play for the Giants”
“Franklin?”
“Not those Giants”
I suppose you have not seen gallo has a .390 obp
Two non prospects? You don’t even know who they are? Lol
Not too me. As a Yankee fan I say keep your strikeout machine.
If you’re talking Frazier, andujar and even florial yes everyone knows who they are and yes their value has taken a major hit no matter how many Yankees fans want to disagree , Frazier and andujar should get them Miguel Cabrera how about them apples
I think you forgot to mention that that AS player also bats around .230 and is a career .212 hitter…..the last thing the Yankees need is another 2-3 strikeout a game guy stuck in the middle of the line-up….already have one in Stanton!
Let the Padres have him!
Zero unless you’re a Yankees fan.
Check out the fantastic OBP, as per above.
So how much cash or who from the Japanese league can the Yankees get for Clint Frazier?
Gotta love Yankees fans. Think teams want to give NY all star players in exchange for NY’s garbage.
A package of both Gibson and Gallo would be intriguing to see what the Padres would offer.
I’m sure Reinsdorf would have no problem going over the threshold either.
What young arms do Padres have left to deal? Gore probably untouchable.
I really wonder if they would deal him coming off a down season knowing that this season / next season is their best window of opportunity in decades.
They will not. There is zero chance that Preller sells his top prospect at a discount.
“deal him coming off a down season”
Buy high, sell low? Bold strategy.
Let’s see if it pays off, Cotton
@Steve Nebraska it’s Preller’s strategy
Get a RH 1B platoon option for Hosmer- Cj Cron
Get a capable 4th OF LH bat- Kyle Calhoun
Get 1 or 2 rental starters
Davies, Morton
Could ask the Cardinals about Yadier Molina to sure up the catching.
Or ask the Nationals about Yan Gomes.
Move Nola to a super utility role and ease him back.
Kole* Calhoun
I don’t think Morton would accept a trade to SD, even if the Braves think they are out of it (which really they aren’t given that division and the Mets’ health issues). He would just retire.
Molina isnt going anywhere, and if he did, I’d like to see the Jay’s or Angel’s get him to complete the molina trifecta
Cron is a perfect add indeed
Could ask the Cardinals. Could also ask Biden to cover the cost of the luxury tax overage. Better chance of that happening.
Morton is not agreeing to go west. If the Braves are going to trade Morton it almost certainly have to be to an eastern team with a trip back to Houston probably being the farthest west he’d be willing to go.
Molina is not leaving St.Louis. Gomes could be realistic though.
Calhoun can’t stay healthy this year but could come cheap as the Diamondbacks just sell off everyone they can get anything for
Yeah and Bumgarner was either going to retire or stay in SF, sign with the Braves or sign with whichever team hired Bochy as their manager. And Rich Hill was going to either retire, stay in LA or sign with the Red Sox. and… and…
Morton had deliberately chooses teams from the lower south east he and braves likely have a understanding if they trade him it’s to somewhere like Tampa or possibly Houston at the furthest
@Noel1982 no, if that were true they would have given him a NTC. A handshake no-trade agreement plus a quarter is worth 25 cents.
That the Yankees were going to sign both Bryce Harper AND Manny Machado.
@Eatdust666 I heard people say the Padres would do that too
Hosmer is hitting .278 vs lefties this year.. He has similar success against lefties in the past as well, namely in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017.
Blake Snell, Chris Archer, etc…trade with the Rays at your own risk.
Tommy Pham and Jake Cronenworth disagree.
Tommy Pham and Jake Cronenworth disagree.
Padres got Cronenworth from them. Both teams have fleeced each other.
Blake Snell, Wil Myers vs. Pham, Cronenworth, Emilio Pagan, Jose Castillo.
Of all teams Padres have done about 50/50 in trades with the Rays.
I fear that Larry Rothschild is doing for Blake Snell what he did for Sonny Gray.
Snell is the same guy today as he was his most of his time in TB. Afraid of the zone
Totally agree
100% agreed DrDan
I am not a fan of Larry Rothschild and think going into 2022 the Padres need a new pitching coach.
If the Rockies fire Bud Black id love for the Padres to rehire him as their pitching coach.
Preller has made 5 trades with the Rays in his time as GM
Myers: I guess both the Rays and Padres lost that one. Why they even let the Nats get involved is anybody’s guess.
Ryan Schimpf for Deion Tansel: Inconsequential
Pham/Cronenworth for Renfroe/Edwards/Quiroz: Cronenworth’s breakout makes this one look really good for the Padres so far. Still have to see what Edwards and Quiroz do before declaring the Padres winners
Margot and Driscoll for Pagan: Padres lose this one
Snell: Padres REALLY lose this one
Padres will probably ultimately lose the Snell trade, but nothing they gave up is all that great, yet. Meija is performing as an average backup (likely not needed by Padres, although would have been useful this year with Nola injury). Patino has shown some good upside, but still too early to say he’ll be better than Snell. Wilcox and Hunt are so far away (both in A ball), that we won’t know for years who won this trade.
Patiño and Mejia have combined for more WAR than Snell in 2021. This means that the Rays actually won the trade so far. And this was supposed to be a win-now trade for the Padres and a win-later trade for the Rays.
Padres have already lost the Snell trade.
0.3 WAR ahead isn’t really substantial lol.
The point is the trade hasn’t made the team better this year and it was supposed to be a win-now trade for the Padres. It’s going to get worse. Not better.
Snell is signed thru next season.
He could still bounce back and make the team better.
The results of the trade have not been determined 1/2 way thru the first season.
1. Snell is signed through 2023
2. It’s a win-now trade that didn’t help the Padres win now. Therefore they automatically lost the trade.
Ryan, you know better than most that WAR is not an accurate measure of performance until you have about 3 seasons of data. Very disappointing to see you try to use WAR for that small of a sample size
@Koamalu You’re the one who posted a million times on here and Friarhood that Luis Patiño is better than Blake Snell NOW when the trade went down and has been crying about Snell all season long so I’m not sure what your point is here.
Use whatever stat you want. It’s not going to paint a positive picture of Blake Snell for 2021.
Remove, it’s like you get tunnel vision and keeping beating the same dead horse over and over again, with an arrogance that assumes you are definitely right. I guess my brain isn’t built like that. If Snell wins 2 Cy Youngs or how about even makes 2 all star games, are you still going to say that the Padres lost the trade?
Yeah, I know you’re going to say “it’s win-now time, baby, and he isn’t helping the Pads”. But forget this year. Could it be a win trade if Snell helps the Padres win the World Series a year or two from now? Or would it still be a bad trade because he “didn’t help the Padres win this very second”?
@Begone Spenglerd (parody) Why do you change your username and have conversations with yourself Tipsy McStagger aka trillaryhump16 aka AustinKearnsIsNotGod?
@remove, when you have no comeback and realize the point made is legit, go the ad hominem route. It’s a ‘good’ look and shows that you got nothing else.
He doesn’t need to be better than Snell to make that trade look bad.
And where do you get that you need 3 years of WAR? WAR measures the performance for that year based on underlying numbers. Are you saying you need 3 years of those underlying numbers to accurately judge a player? I wouldn’t necessarily disagree with that, but when you’re just talking about their performance for a season it’s about as good as any other number to describe the single season performance (you could argue that defensive metrics may make it wonky for position players in a single year).
@PhDPad not an ad hominem. It’s a legitimate question. I wanna know why he does that.
@Padres2019ha have the Padres traded Wil Myers for Noah Syndergaard yet? How about JT Realmuto? Have the Padres traded for him then flipped him at the deadline for a better return yet?
@Pads Fans Koamalu is you. You are also outinleftfield, BaseballisLife, YourDaddy and The Padfather.
YOU still have not atoned for lying about Luis Campusano’s charges being reduced to a misdemeanor in November, about having a realtor sister who sold Freddy Galvis a house in San Diego, about Shields for Tim Anderson being a “done deal,” about Nolan Arenado agreeing to waive his opt-out clause as part of a trade or about buying up a bunch of farmland from bankrupt farmers.
Like I said. If you don’t like WAR, pick another stat. It won’t reflect positively on Snell either.
Anyway, now that Koamalu appears to be banned, I imagine it is time for you to create another account. If you don’t want us to know it is you, my advice would be to drop your tired “Ryan” schtick and stop pretending to speak to insiders.
Or maybe you just don’t care if we know who you are in which case keep it up.
Jay Jaffe, Mitchel Lichtman, Tom Tango, and Dave Cameron have all said that WAR is not a valid comparative tool until you have 400-450 games played, 400+ IP for starters, and 150 appearances for relievers.
Well if there is a stat that those guys DO like for one year’s worth of data that says Snell is actually doing well this year I am sure you will tell me.
You should look in a mirror sometime. I don’t need you to admit or deny any of those things because I actually have proof and if you don’t want everyone else to see it I’d suggest you learn your place.
Oh yeah. And Hunter Renfroe never broke his foot on June 23rd, 2019 in Pittsburgh and Alex Anthopoulos was never forced to resign amid collusion allegations.
Is this bizarro-world?! My Padres exceeding the luxury tax?! Incredible. Now go get some solid SP to carry this team through the post season!
Hopefully they do and miss the playoffs. Be hilarious to watch all the spending equals winning folks make excuses. Go all in never works.
Yeah cause it’s surely didn’t work for the Yankees, Red Sox, or Dodgers. Good take!
Highly doubtful Padres miss playoffs. More likely they play wild card game and lose.
They’ve added 100M in payroll in less than 2 years and you’re pretending to be shocked they’re spending money?
Lol, no. To spend OVER the luxury tax threshold is something unexpected for a team that spent it’s entire existence profiting off of revenue sharing.
Other than catcher which is the most important defensive position, their offense is pretty stacked. They should probably just look for a platoon bat for hosmer and a utility man.
They should have kept Ty France! He would have been a perfect platoon option with Hosmer. That was the one guy I thought they shouldn’t have given up in the Nola trade.
How does a “small market team” get a bonus draft pick AND go over the luxury cap? what a joke. Any team that goes over the cap should forfeited the bonus pick.
Agreed, the Padres are walking on some thin ice if they continue with this decision
If you don’t understand what constitutes a small market you probably should not be commenting about it. 27th largest TV market. TV drives revenue in baseball with tickets and ballpark revenue making up 30% of the total. SD is a small market. They won’t get the competitive balance draft pick if they do exceed the CBT threshold.
So because you are willing to spend you are going to get penalized? If the Padres are willing to commit more revenue to the payroll then other teams. Theres no reason for them to lose their bonus picks. The picks are market based.
If anything small market teams like the Padres should be compensated draft picks if they actually do go out and spend.
It’s good for baseball for small market teams to go out and spend $$
Same for Rays, A’s, Pirates, etc.
By that same token if you have under say $90 mill payroll for 5 consecutive years you should be docked draft picks. Don’t need to sign guys to long term contracts but you can sign 1 year high AAV guys to at least put together a somewhat competent roster.
They can score runs. They don’t have the starting pitching to win it all though. They need to go in that direction. They should take a shot at Scherzer. The Nats aren’t going anywhere and probably would at least think about it. This move makes them legit.
Can we just stop talking about Scherzer getting traded. It’s not happening.
You are exactly right. The single greatest move for playoff success is a dominant SP. Forget the bat, find an arm. My dream is Scherzer but I think it’s unlikely.
I have to say the Padres greatest weakness is also their greatest strength
They are kinda like a puppy….Young and dumb yet never deterred. They don’t hold onto past mistakes for longer than they occurred and are ready to run into the fire the next inn/game
It’s a fun style to watch tbh, albeit probably a tad frustrating at times for real Sd fans ……Wait …….we are talking trades ….ofc Prellers IN
What are the giants ? The old dog you gotta start preparing to put down but at the least moment they show a renewed sense of life .?
Problem is most of the old dogs haven’t been playing much together all year. They finally have some decent depth this year. I hope they don’t screw with their farm system too much with trades.
Lol, the Padres…
Thanks for the hard-hitting analysis Johnny Superscout!
Well, say what you will about Preller, but he’s rarely boring.
As a White Sox fan, I actually am a little jealous of the Padres. They still have a decent farm system, even if not what it once was, while the Sox’ system has very little in the way of appreciable depth. The talent at the major league level might swing slightly toward the Sox, but the Padres definitely have the best overall player between the two. What makes me jealous isn’t any of that, though; it’s that the Padres are aggressive and had so much farm depth that they built a terrific rotation while keeping most of their top prospects. Sox did great in getting extensions, but never had the wealth of prospect capital SD had to draw from.
I have outside envy of some Sd traits as well –
That endless bullpen…,,,
Stamens ownership rights!
Tatis
The way they run the bases
Saying all that, I still prefer the CWS model to Sd’s team building wise
….But yea Sd wins the pitching battle, has a strong pen, and has some capable arms in the rotation so it looks great…The ledger on the other hand….is probably near maxed out moving forward……but so is CWS nearly (after Lynn’s new upboot) … they are at all time highs currently
They will be 2 young fun teams to track over the next 3~5 years . I think White Sox have a longer rope but Sd has that get hot Oct its over feeling at the moment for them indeed
Padres offer to Machado was better than the White Sox’s offer
I love Joey…. but we need to send his a** to SD for a haul and a half. At this point, Abrams seems like a real possibility, and I swear Gore is almost to that point too. Though the Padres would be selling low on either of the aforementioned two, so the inclusion of either of them in a trade is something I doubt. Granted, if it were to happen, it would probably be Abrams coming to Texas since the Rangers have had a prospect crush on him for a while now.
We’ll see how it plays out, but I have my hopes up for a sky-high Gallo return.
Have you seen the returns that Preller gives teams when he makes trades? He got Darvish, Snell, Musgrove and Clevinger and gave up a total of 1 top 100 prospect (#32)among all of those trades. Now you expect to get a top 10 prospect in mlb plus more from him? For Joey Gallo? I mean dare to dream but don’t hold your breath.
Only one elite prospect, but a ton of other prospects. In addition to Patino, Quantrill was top-50, Naylor fringy top-100, a 2nd rounder, 3rd rounder, Arias a #87, a 3rd rounder, a 3rd rounder, Lucchesi, a 2nd rounder, and a couple of other well-regarded kids.
I could’ve put that in better order, but SD gave a lot of pieces. Gallo won’t fetch Gore or Abrams, but if I were Texas, I’d be looking for 2-3 of the younger, well-regarded kids that the Cubs got.
Quantrill was never a Top 50.
csspackler
Quantrill was never a Top 50.
=====================================
According B-R, pre-2018, BA ranked him #52 and BP ranked him #48. That averages to #50.
Luis Urias was the #36 prospect in baseball in 2018. Do you think his value may have dropped a bit by the time he was traded in 2019? Yeah, and Quantrill was traded the year after. Quantrill wasn’t a top 50 prospect when he was traded, just like Fernando Tatis wasn’t the #2 prospect in baseball when the White Sox traded him.
Quantrill was not a top 50 prospect when he was traded. His stock had plummeted. Urias was not either.
Doesn’t matter what they were at one time, just what they were when traded.
The point being that they gave up good prospects, and a lot of them.
He doesn’t have the back half of his farm system like he once did. The 20th prospect in SD could be top 10 on most other teams an offseason ago. That’s not the case anymore. They’re a top heavy system and let’s be honest, the top prospects he’s held onto haven’t had great years. Abrahams needed surgery. Gore has stunk it up again so much they won’t call him up even though they need pitching. Capusano still hasn’t proven to be an MLB regular. That prospect sheen is starting to wear on some of them..
BeforeMcCourt
He doesn’t have the back half of his farm system like he once did.
=====================================================
Pretty much my point. They traded off probably more prospects in the past two years, than the RS had in their entire farm two years ago. Trading off 2-3 to get you over the top, I get. Trading off that many, I wouldn’t do.
You’re not wrong Joe, some here are just very defensive of Preller
Gore is hurt. Blisters. He has been at the Padres Peoria facility since mid-June.
Campusano had never played above A ball before coming to the majors. He was not SUPPOSED to be a MLB regular this season. After a slow start he is tearing up AAA.
“If you ignore when he’s been bad, he’s been good!”
@Before. His name is Abrams, and he had a great season before the injury. Campusano is looking very good last 2 months as well. I know you don’t like the Pads but try an honest take now and then.
LOL. You wouldnt get Gallo strait up for Abrams.
Gallo plus 2 top 40 prospects for Abrams.
You are high off your ass if you think Preller will ever move CJ Abrams… Gore is almost as untouchable. Lol you are trippin my boy
Agreed. It’s hard to believe you actually think the Padres would trade 6+ years of either Gore or Abrams – two top TEN prospects in baseball – for basically one season and change of Gallo. Gallo should command a solid return package, especially with how good he has been over the past six weeks, but I think deep down you know that there is no way in Hell the Rangers get those types of prospects for him.
Fangraphs has Gore @ 30 on their board, not top 10.
Pretty much everyone else has him top 10. Who do you believe? 6 other top publications or Fangraphs?
Preller has made terrific trades for SP but they’ve blown up in his face. Bad luck, karma, poor medical-record scrutiny, I’ve heard all of that. You know he’ll keep trying until his “hot talent lava” stream runs cold. Good. His moves are interesting.
Most observers felt Blake Snell would not turn into Skinny Pete. Clevinger could have led the 3 Aces. Darvish can’t stay upright, which at this point in his career was unanticipated. Dinelson Lamet has the talent to lead any team. Musgrove left a wee bit of his arm on the hill during his no-hitter.
Preller makes great gets that haven’t panned out. But he and his boss each have a robust pair, so this is not the main roster going forward. Both of them are absolutely, definitely going for it.
Getting Darvish, Clevinger, and Snell just feels like an all-in move at a really high level. Considering that talent surrendered, those three have a combined 10-6 with a 3.97. I think Davies & Quantrill have a 7-8 with 4.23. Just imho, but it feels like SD is giving a a lot of prospects to get a little bit better, and also adding a lot of payroll.
@ sergefunction
If you bother to check you will notice that both Musgrove and Darvish have superior numbers to Jose Berrios. Jose Berrios is expected to demand a huge haul this year yet somehow Darvish and Musgrove are trades that haven’t panned out? No top 100 prospects for either one. Do you think trading for Berrios will cost more? I do.
Darvish: 3.09-ERA, 1.00-WHIP, 105-IP
Musgrove: 3.14-ERA, 1.00-WHIP, 103.1-IP
Berrios: 3.16-ERA, 1.08-WHIP, 114.3-IP
It’s too early to tell on either of those trades. Lucchesi has a 2.28 over his last 7 games. Bednar has a 2.92. And three other prospects, primarily Head were moved. I’m not sure this will look good at the end of the two years that SD has Musgrove.
Same with Darvish. The Cubs got a 40+ FV, a 45, a 50 and a 40+. And Davies, a decent #3/4. One more injury by Darvish and that trade could be a disaster.
Lucchesi just had TJ surgery.
Karma for what? Preller didn’t do nothing.
He probably means the tampering with medical records thing. See the Drew Pomeranz/Anderson Espinosa trade.
You mean like how the Red Sox tampered with Espinoza’s medical records? And the Marlins tampered with Chris Paddack and Carter Capps’ medical records? That tampering with medical records thing?
Terrific trades that have “blown up in his face” are also just known as bad trades.
“Most observers felt Blake Snell would not turn into Skinny Pete.” – There were quite a few people, at least on here, that pointed out the real question marks with Snell.
“Clevinger could have led the 3 Aces.” – You’re using “Aces” pretty liberally here, but sure.
“Darvish can’t stay upright, which at this point in his career was unanticipated.” – Darvish is still having a good year, but there is a reason the Cubs traded him when they did. Injuries shouldn’t have been too surprising and him not repeating what he did over last years’ 12 starts shouldn’t either. He was on pace for something like an 8 win season, I’ll bet against that for pretty much any pitcher on a year to year basis.
I think too many SD fans are treating Darvish as a lock. He has a 4.78 ERA over his last 9 starts. Not a huge sample size, but still noteworthy.
Darvish has missed one start all year and was an all star and so he’s injury-prone and not a good pitcher?
Cmon. Must be something better to complain about.
I’m not complaining. I was the first guy, two years ago, that said Darvish was still a good pitcher, when everyone else was talking about how bad his contract was. He had a bad start to 2019, but had an insane K/W in the 2nd half.
Now he is struggling.
This is not complaining. This is simply telling you what his BR numbers are. If you don’t think the numbers are meaningful it is okay to ignore them. But those are what his numbers are.
Sure but name a quality SP in the league that doesn’t have a several games rough patch? In his case explainable by a tweaked hip. I guess I don’t get the point. Overall, Yu has been fairly consistent the past 2 years.
You could be correct. Players get hot and cold. IMO, when older pitchers hit a rough patch, it is a more serious issue than when a younger pitcher hits a rough patch. He’s almost 35. so it is fairly remarkable that he’s pitched as well as he has.
Maybe another way to think about it is, I think we can all acknowledge that he will hit a wall and decline. The question is, when will he hit the wall, and how will we know that he is in decline. If there is a signal for a decline. would a 9-game stretch not be it?
It feels like Preller built one of the all-time great farms, and is now frittering it away. A couple of years ago, when Betts was on the block, I mentioned that SD might’ve had 15 50 FV prospects compared to the RS with maybe 3.
It feels like SD just got a lot more expensive, a lot thinner, but not a lot better.
At that time we hadn’t had a winning record in a decade. Not sure how you can say they haven’t gotten any better. It’s just they haven’t hit the peak their looking for…so they keep trying.
I understand that, on a one-off basis. What I object to is trading for Darvish, Clevinger, Musgrove, and Snell, in short order. It’s almost like they wanted to overwhelm MLB, at all costs. The Pods farm is a lot stronger than the RS, but it feels like the RS trading their top ten prospects for a 2-3 window. With the Pods farm, it felt like it should be a ten year window.
3rd place in nl west? Is an improvement? So far giants have blown by the in win percentage and boost an improving farm over padres. Padres typically finish 4th/5th yearly. Brady is correct, padres cleared out bottom minors and sure while the overall is still nice the window has closed to the next 3/4 years as opposed to what could have been an 10 year window. Padres are already expensive and will get more expensive when players like cronenworth and Grisham, snell, clevinger lamet expect to get paid. Hope the couple years is worth it
Sorry to tell you, but the Padres have an owner who wants to win now. The days of the penny pinching cellar dwelling Padres are over. Preller is one of the best scouting GM’s in the game. Tatis signed a 14 year contract. You really think they won’t try to put a winning team around the most marketable player in the game? Lol get used to it my guy.
Great. If only he could actually develop the prospects he scouts.
Spending money doesn’t equal wins look at the angels and yankees
14 of the last 15 WS winners had elite payrolls. What’s you’re point again?
He didn’t say they haven’t gotten any better.
As someone who has watched the Padres closely for a long time, they have gotten better.
Better go after Marte, Myers and Hosmer play 1B, you will get a guy with speed , power and won’t have to give up the farm for him then maybe get an extension, or if you want to make it a bigger deal trade Paddack, campusano + for marte and one of Alcantara/Lopez, after that just get a guy like pineda or Danny Duffy.
Duffy just went on IL
Not going to take Campusano to get Marte for 2 months.
Read it again.
I missed the Alcantara/Lopez portion of your post. Lopez just went on the IL with rotator cuff injury. So would have to be Alcantara. Do you really see the Marlins moving a young, controllable starter?
Man would I hate to see Mancini go but he would fit in that team so well. He’s the kind of guy that could put the team over the top
I want to trade with the padres. They in any fantasy football leagues? Did they never stop and wonder why a team that was in the world series wanted to trade one if it’s best pitchers? Or did they actually believe they couldn’t afford him?
You act like Snell wasn’t good last year. You also act like TB has never traded pitchers away.
It’s going to have to be a significant return to pull Gallo away from Texas. Man wants to stay here and he’s good and young enough to be the face of our next run. Not expecting SD, or anyone else, to actually give up enough to entice Texas.
Gallo has no say in that matter. At least not for another year-and-a-half. It would be nice to see the Rangers trade him then bring him back just so people will stop saying that that is impossible.
Just throwing this out there:
Who is going to be more clutch in the playoffs, Machado, Tatis, or Chronenworth?
If you had one game to get, who do want to pitch the game?
Muncy
Tatis will give them the most Complete overall offense.
Cronenworth will give them the most Consistent offense.
Machado will give them the most Clutch.
I think Rangers should fire Chris Woodward. He can’t motivate the team at all. Cut their losses and get a real leader in the clubhouse
Same old trade deadline speculation for weeks then nothing happens.
Good for them. Teams refusing to cross the luxury tax line are a joke. This is sports. Play and pay to win.
So if you cross the luxury tax line you’re guaranteed to win while paying “extra money to finish out of the playoffs??—– better rethink that before you go playing Russian Roulette with someone else’s money if you’re wanting to keep your GM job! lmao
Spending does not equal winning. It’s a very naive viewpoint to think otherwise. It’s not about the luxury tax, it’s that payrolls in excess of 200 million do more to bog a team down and kill future flexibility than they do help winning. Spending smart is smart. You are advocating spending for the sake of spending. That’s dumb. Having a budget isn’t being cheap, it’s a smart way to sustain success… then there’s the little matter of teams being businesses that can’t survive in the red. Y’know, a little thing called not losing money. What good does a third place team with a huge payroll running into debt do? Cuz that’s all your plan will achieve, lordd99. To win you need a plan a bit more thought out than, spend all duh moneez!
All I know is don’t trade CJ Abrams, he is the perfect fit for the Padres with his speed and contact ability. Abrams, Tatis, Cronenworth, Grisham are the core of the future Padres (and hopefully add Campusano to that list). Hopefully Lamet, Gore and Weathers get things together and form the future of our pitching staff, but that’s currently trending in the wrong direction.
Just gonna throw this out there. The Rangers and their fans want a ton for Gallo the strikeout machine. Yes he has light tower power when he connects but he strikes out so much that the times he does connect for solo home runs you will probably miss it because it won’t be in big spots with runners on. Yes he is above average defensively but I have another name for the Padres.
Here me out everyone because your gonna accuse me of ignorance and tom foolery.
Giancarlo Michael Stanton is owed approx $150 after this season with a cap hit at $23 mil per. He use to be a solid RF until became a Yankee and Judge blocked him. Now the dumb dumb Yanks are afraid to put him in the field because they are afraid he may get hurt.
The Yanks would have to convince him to waive his no trade and go back to his west coast roots to a winning team and also send Luke Voit in the deal and the Padres send Eric Hosmer to the Yanks.
So let me get this strait!
Yanks send Stanton and 25 million plus Luke Voit for Eric Hosmer.
Stanton has a full NTC and already said the only teams he would approve trades to are the Astros, Dodgers, Yankees and Cubs.
That was before San Diego was a good team. It’s a great place to live and west coast. Plus they are ready to win now!
@billysballz there were other good teams out there when he said that
Whoa….Removepitcher………where did you read that….the NY press has not ever come out with a list of “approved” teams Stanton would accept a trade to…..the closest they came was hypothesizing that he’d probably accept a trade to a “West Coast” team given his California roots…..NEVER…NEVER… have the Astros or the Cubs been mentioned in any trade scenario the NY press has written about and they would be all over anything like your inaccurate statement of potential “other” teams.
@rocky7 go back to 2017. When he was traded to the Yanks. Said he would only accept trades to the Yankees, Astros, Cubs or Dodgers.
Ill do that deal. Cashman says get out.
Myers and Hosmer for Stanton and Voit. If you factor the injury risk in it’s not a bad deal.
Didn’t read all the comments as there were too many, would the Padres up their prospect offer if the Rangers took Myers? Offsets their salary. Not that I’d like to see Gallo on the Padres haha
I think the time for teams to make a move like that was during the 19-20 offseason before the pandemic began. Preller was desperate to move Myers then. Now, I think he probably lets a team have him if they are willing to take the whole contract but isn’t going to eat significant $ or attach significant prospects to do it.
Myers is tearing the cover off the ball right now (.311/.407/.622/1.030 in July) and only has one more season left on his deal. Why would including him in a deal increase the quality/number of prospects going along with him?
His track record and exorbitant salary (even for just one year) is the reason why that would happen Koamalu. I’m not saying it actually WILL though. As Preller likely values Myers more than other teams.
Myers has 1 year left on his contract. He is not a major liability anymore, especially with Tommy Pham’s contract running out this year.
Pham will be resigned.
Why would they do that?
Not sure they will resign Pham but his 300+ BA, OBP of 390 and OPS .890 since midMay, along with being on pace for 20 hrs 25 SBs is a bargain for his salary. Plenty of teams can use that.
Can someone explain why Gallo is so sought after ? Sure he walks and hits HR’s, but a 210 or so career BA who strikes out roughly 35% of the time ? Is he really worth a haul of prospects ? What am I missing here ?
I agree.
New age fans don’t acknowledge batting average as a valid measuring tool. Gallo leads the league in walks which has good value and plays decent OF defense. A good player to be sure. Would rather watch a pitcher attempt to hit than any of these 3 true outcomes players. They’re so boring
A .230 hitter, career ..212 still only gets 23 hits for every 100 at bats…..walks are nice but this guy isn’t paid to walk, he’s paid to hit and hit for power which he does all too infrequently as pointed out but his .230 BA.
That’s a high value metric as it tells you how many hits per 100 at bats a player gets. So contrary to what you think, its still the top metric when assessing a player.
You’re not missing anything….you’re spot on with your assessment.
He’s just another Adam Dunn or Dave Kingman (another era but still the same)…..the exit velocity and launch angle gods just adore a guy like Gallo.
He’s over hyped, he’s just another Dave Kingman like someone just mentioned, its either a home run or bust for him, there are a bushel of those players around the league earning a lot less then what he’s making. Clearly not a difference maker, however a player like Castellanos is considered an impact bat to add to the Padres lineup.
Making 17 million a year- there’s a real nice luxury tax piece in Castellanos signed for this year and next!
I can see why some on here aren’t GM’s, including me!
Yeah, 145 wRC+ players by the bushel! (He’s 15th in MLB by wRC+).
The Pads need pitching more than another bat
Gold glove defense, premier power, and an elite OBP.
Clint Frazier and Gardner for Gore & Abrams
Nope!
I don’t think Padres would trade last week’s pop tarts for Gardner
The Padres could really use Castellanos right now, he would be the bat to pry if they can from the Reds. His bat would energize the rest of the lineup….Gallo is a nice bat but he’s inconsistent at best, that type of bat won’t move the needle. Marte would be an option and is in his walk year, but Castellanos is the difference maker here.
Trade Castellanos??…when he’s injured and signed for 2 more years , albeit with opt out clauses , but Castellanos himself has said on multiple occasions he’d prefer to stay in Cincinnati!!
So just because he is “only” signed for around $17 m…doesn’t mean jack squat!
Even if he does opt out, it doesn’t mean they couldn’t re-sign him so why give up on him when they’re in 2nd place in the division and 3rd in the Wild Card race with Milwaukee’s easier part of the schedule coming to an end and not having to face the Reds again for over a month after just going 4-3 against the Reds in a 7 game back to back series….which proved the Reds can bang with them even withh by out Lorenzo, Senzel, Moustakas and Hoffman and great call up pieces from the minors in September! (Lodolo, Greene, the former Jose Garcia (name change) among others.
Trade Castellanos while in 2nd place in the division and 3rd in the Wild Card…
He said the Reds signed him later in the free agency period when he didn’t feel wanted by any other team and that he has developed some great relationships with other players and management!!
Players often say they’d like to stay somewhere…then they go to where they get the most money. I can’t believe fans still put more than minimal stock in those type of comments.
If Castellanos doesn’t opt out it’s because no one is willing to pay him more money, not because he wants to stay in Cincy. Casual fans will talk about players opting in because they like the org they are with all day but in the end it always comes down to $.
How these owners let Preller spend them into oblivion is beyond me
Gallo doesn’t hit enough doubles. disappointing…..
I heard Joey Gallo is still looking for Larry
Rothschild or the lobster?
What will happen first: Matt Holliday touching home plate or Pads Fans providing a single credible source that Luis Campusano’s charges were reduced to a misdemeanor in November 2020 or admitting he made that all up?
I got my money on Matt Holliday…
