Padres left-hander Ryan Weathers was activated off the 10-day injured list earlier today, and he marked the occasion with four shutout innings and his first career home run in San Diego’s 3-2 loss to the Marlins. Weathers had to be helped off the field after suffering what looked like an ugly leg injury on July 11, though he ended up only fracturing a small bone in his right ankle. He looked none the worse for wear today, which is a nice boost to a Padres team that has battled through multiple pitching injuries and might yet look to add more arms by the trade deadline.
More injury updates from around the NL West…
- Cody Bellinger is day-to-day after leaving Friday’s game due to hamstring tightness, though Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told The Los Angeles Times’ Jeff Miller and other reporters that Bellinger was on the field working out prior to today’s game. When he does return, Bellinger might be utilized at first base in order to reduce his running, Roberts said.
- Roberts also had more updates on other injured Dodgers stars, including Mookie Betts’ continuing right hip problems. Betts received a cortisone shot and the plan is for the outfielder to play on Tuesday when the Dodgers begin a series with the Giants. Betts hasn’t played since July 19 and hasn’t started a game since July 17. Clayton Kershaw (placed on the 10-day IL with forearm inflammation on July 7) threw a bullpen session today and is slated for a simulated game on Tuesday.
- Brandon Belt may be close to a rehab assignment, as the Giants first baseman ran the bases today as he continues to work his way back from knee inflammation. Belt told reporters (including John Shea of The San Francisco Chronicle) that he feels “way better than I thought I was going to feel at this point,” considering that there was some consideration of knee surgery when he initially hurt his knee almost exactly one month ago. Belt intends to wear a protective sleeve over his knee when he returns to the field.
- In other positive injury recovery news for the Giants, Brandon Crawford began baseball activity today. Crawford was placed on the 10-day IL with what was considered to be a minor left oblique strain on July 19, and it looks like Crawford will indeed only be out of action for a minimal amount of time.
- Diamondbacks catcher Carson Kelly will began a rehab assignment on Thursday and will move to High-A Hillsboro on Sunday, MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert tweets. A fractured wrist sent Kelly to the injured list on June 20, interrupting an outstanding season for the 27-year-old backstop. Kelly has hit .260/.385/.460 with eight home runs over 187 plate appearances.
Datashark
Belt’s contract year….he better step up his game. although Belt is on target for injuries per season.
Crawford’s defense is needed badly…his time away may have helped his contract terms.
Bett’s was heating up before injury.
Kershaw is aging he still has that sensitive back issue – has many 200 IPs under his belt too, so rest is really what he needs – he might be more value come late Aug/Sept

Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

Who is Bett’s?

Bett’s bat. Probably.
MikeD26
Campusano for Scherzer and get a guy like marte, forget about gallo.

Lol Campy for a 37 y/o rental.
MikeD26
Washington is going to get a top 100 and something else for sure
Hudson6
He won’t get a top 30 prospect. Maybe top 100 but not top 50.

@MikeD26 you are going to be very disappointed
I Beg To Differ
If Scherzer is willing to sign a 3 year extension sure. Anything longer I’m a little hesitant about but his 38 39 40 season it’s worth a shot to have Darvirsh Scherzer Clevinger Musgrove Snell. Pair Weathers with Clevinger coming off TJS and pair Lamet with Snell.
Shift paddack to pen full time to replace Stammen / Johnson leaving via FA.
Samuel
8-9 days from now it’ll come out that the Nationals never had any intention of trading Max.
And why would he sign an extension with a team when he can shop himself after the season and pick where he wants to go? And why would he and his family want to leave DC after living there so long and making so many friends?
Deleted_User
@I Beg to Differ not even if he signs an extension. An extension for a perennial All Star who is 2 months out from free agency who is represented by Scott Boras is basically going to be market rate. Therefore it doesn’t really help Scherzer’s trade value.
Deleted_User
@Samuel Eliminating the risk of an injury hurting his payday is the reason why he would do that. Although I do generally agree that the team has more to gain from extending Scherzer than Scherzer does.
I Beg To Differ
Why sign an extension now? Couple reasons
1. He’s got 10 and 5 rights. He can pick any team he wants. He can demand a new contract to waive his 10 and 5 rights. Teams looking to acquire him now are teams that he’s looking at in the off season. He’s near the end of his career; for a guy like that it’s ws contender or bust.
2. A team looking to push for a WS is more likely to overpay on an extension now (you’re looking towards a WS this year) than they would during the off-season when they to consider other financial obligations.
3. There’s no guarantee you get a 3 or 4 year deal in the off season. If you get an extension offer you like why not sign it now?
4. Threat of injury. If you get that 3 or 4 year extension offers now no reason to risk sustaining an injury from now until end of the season.
JerryBird
Didn’t the Dodgers give Bellinger a big raise, right before the injuries kicked in and his production fell of to nothing? He hits like his father now. I hope they have an insurance policy on him.
paulslc
You hit like his mother.
JerryBird
You may very well be his mother for all I know, so I guess I hit like you. Back at ya, my friend!
tstats
Wow. That was the worst comeback you coulda brought
JerryBird
It deserved nothing better. All I did was ask a question and Bellinger IS hitting like his father did. Poorly. Nuff said?
Danieley3
The last time we saw Bellinger healthy, he was blasting clutch home runs while robbing home runs from the Rays. I believe he had 5-6 bombs in their World Series playoff run, combined with some of the best center field instincts in the game… He dislocated his shoulder locking arms w/ a teammate after that last WS yack, had off season surgery, & is working his way back. He’s only had maybe 150 AB’s this season? Give the youngster a break — he’s worth EVERY penny of that contract, plus more.
JerryBird
I know the story, being healthy has been a while for the guy, quite a while.. How about… currently hits like his father, I hope he gets back on track soon. I actually like the guy. Enjoy that money!
BeforeMcCourt
It was arbitration….
Guess you think Kris Bryant had bad years because of his arbitration numbers?
JerryBird
No, I can’t agree with you on that. I think Bryant is looking pretty good at the plate.
Cap & Crunch
Arbitration gave him the raise
JerryBird
Well, a pay increase is a raise, no matter how you look at it. How about he got one heckuva pay increase and then nose dived? By injury or not. No matter, the honest evaluation is he is hitting like his father.
Prospectnvstr
Yeah, to bad they pulled Ryan Weathers after 4 shutout innings. Despite hitting a solo home run in the 3rd inning he was pinch hitted in the 5th inning with a guy who was batting under .200 who suprisingly struck out. I know that they’re trying to limit their innings but come on at least let the kid get thru 5 innings. As the saying goes “play silly games, get silly prizes”.
Central Valley
The Giants need to go get Scherzer in my opinion, because Gausman is not looking like a #1 as of late.
I also think Kris Bryant would be a great addition because of his versatility. It’s time to make it happen Farhan. This is not the time to dumpster dive.
Samuel
Don’t know. about that. Those guys are pretty old.
You can never have enough pitching. I think they should go after Zach Wheeler. He’s having a pretty good season and the Phillies are messed up. T They also need to look into Jacob deGrom. Because he’s hurt the Giants can probably pick him up pretty cheap. He might be worth taking a flyer on. If not they should be able to get either Brandon Woodruff or Corbin Burnes. The Brewers aren’t going anywhere.
For a bat they need to pick up a 1B in case Belt remains out. Freddy Freeman is on his walk year and the Braves are all injured. He’d be good. If not they can settle for that Alonzo guy from the Mets. Either would be good insurance for Belt. They could probably do a package deal with the Mets for Alonzo and deGrom. No need to go too high. Maybe 4 prospects. Low level guys. And a backup SS in case Crawford stays hurt. The Nationals aren’t going anywhere, so they can probably pick up Trea Turner as insurance. He might also be able to play some 2B in an emergency.
Maybe throw in 2 of Zack Littell, Mike Tauchman and Donovan Solano with the low-level prospects. By hey, to get somethin’ ya gotta give somethin’. Farhan can do this!
Know what I’m sayin’!

Whatever you do, don’t drive yourself home tonight! Get a cab or a ride from a friend.

So what part of OP’s comment sounded so batshit crazy as to elicit that level of snark? He suggested no trades, just stated he thought the Giants might look into one or two high level rental players ? Man..just crazy right? Are you suggesting the Giants don’t have the players in their farm system to entice the under .500 Nats or Cubs?
Danieley3
Sweet Fancy Moses It’s as if you have never seen a game, checked a stat sheet, viewed the standings, or are even talking about the right sport… May God have mercy on your soul.
Brad Scott
It’s not Zaidi’s style to go after big-money players like Scherzer & Bryant. (And the Giants have no need for Bryant anyway.) Sure, they could use another front-line starting pitcher like Scherzer (who couldn’t?), but it’d be out of character for Zaidi to try acquiring him.
A player like Bryant doesn’t help put any contending team over the top. But everyone needs more pitching (and perhaps no one more so than the Dodgers).
SteveGoGiants21!
Remember 2016 giants were in first place before all star break. Traded Duffy away for longo and the team hasn’t been the same til this year! Add to roster unload a couple stars in the minors.. We need Marte and a starting pitcher… Go Giants!
BRUH.SF.BRUH
@SteeveGo Giants you’re getting your trades mixed up. The giants didn’t trade Duffy for Longo in 2016. They traded for Matt Moore…
Jean Matrac
@BRUH
I’d tried telling him the exact same thing about a week ago. Longo was acquired a year-and-a-half after the Duffy Moore trade.
Jean Matrac
@SteveGoGiants21!
Duffy being traded in 2016, even if it had been for Longo, which it wasn’t, was nowhere near the cause of the Giants poor showing in the second half.
After being traded, Duffy got hurt, and played in only 21 games the rest of the year. And he had only a .655 OPS, park-adjusted to an 81 OPS+. Clearly not the difference maker for the Giants in 2016.
SteveGoGiants21!
Sorry you guys are right! Just haven’t seen a move by the Giants that was a difference maker since Pence. And it wasn’t Duffy bat it was how he got along in the clubhouse and on field. Just sayin team chemistry hasn’t been great after recent trades. Just so used to wining finally then bad ball until this unbelievable year so far.
onbase_plus_hugging
Moves that have made a difference: Yaz, Dickerson, Wade, Flores, Ruf, McGee, Gausman, Wood, DeSclafani, García…
CuddyFox
Why only give us the NL West injury news, while some other teams in the NL have people that are or will be throwing pitches. Like today, Miles Mikolas threw in Memphis and tomorrow, Jack Flaherty will be throwing some.
30 Parks
Bellinger and that long swing. Javier Baez has the same issue.
solaris602
Any update on the time table for Evan Longoria’s return? Normally it wouldn’t matter, but he was actually having a solid season at the plate when he went down.
SteveGoGiants21!
He was put on 60 day DL retro to June 6th so hopefully around Aug 5??
UnbiasedFan13
Kris Bryant (with extension)
Whit Merrifield
Bryan Reynolds
Which is a better fit for the Giants?
SteveGoGiants21!
See you guys! This is what I mean on Giants trades as of late. Jan 2018 giants trade crick and Reynolds for McCutchen!! But Reynolds for sure.
