Cubs should sell and eat most of the money going out as well- Edwards from TB would be a nice get for KB
CubTN
So just to be clear. The Cubs eat money to get a better prospect for Bryant but deal Kimbrel just to get the money off the books??
C’mon, Mark! At least be consistent in your speculation.
Kimbrel is the best trade chip the Cubs have. Jed isn’t going to give him up for nothing when there will be more than one team that wants him and bidding on him.
1984wasntamanual
His take on the cubs was pretty bad and seemed to completely ignore the fact that they’re getting gate revenue again. I’d be pretty surprised to see the cubs salary dump Kimbrel this deadline.
A'sfaninLondonUK
The Cubs have lost 9 straight & are 8.5 games back in the division & 7 from a wild card. They’re a mediocre team.
Why wouldn’t they cash in on the 1.5 years of Kimbrel? I don’t think it’d be a salary dump though….

“Why wouldn’t they cash in on the 1.5 years of Kimbrel? I don’t think it’d be a salary dump though….”
If you’re responding to me, then you just reiterated my point.
Cap & Crunch
I didn’t understand the not paying Kimbrel down part as well –
Id pay him down completely if I had too to get better prospects …I dont think the Cubs have a money problem they have a talent in the minors problem ….They should use money as an asset to help that system upgrade at all costs Imo
I’ve been wanting the Cubs to tear it down for awhile now….they kinda obliged starting w Yu then a hot April/May changed a couple things…..As I’ve said many times recently tho I view this losing streak as a possible blessing in disguise for CHC. I know its tough to hear for Cubs fans but thats just my take…I welcome dissenting views always
1984wasntamanual
As a cubs fan, it’s not tough to hear for me. I want them to tear it down as well. They did (maybe still do?) have money issues due to the pandemic and some of the loans that the owners have, but if they’re getting gate and wrigley revenue again, I don’t think it should be as big of an issue. This team has the expiring contracts this year and they’re just not very good with, as you mentioned, little talent in the farm system to replace them.
The rebuild and 2016 WS was good, but a lot of talent was traded away and other talent failed to develop in order to supplement the roster, it’s not ideal, but starting over is probably necessary at this point.

@ Cap above
I don’t think the Cubs need to pay down or salary dump – Kimbrel would be owed @8m for this season – the club option is for $16m next year. A season and a half for an elite closer at @24m? Seems about par for the course, no?
Additionally look at what the Cubs (2016 version) gave up for a half season of Aroldis Chapman – Gleyber Torres, Billy McKinney and err Adam Warren (with thanks to baseball reference)….
I don’t think the Cubs need to tear it down – they’d have a lot of money freed with Kris Bryant & Kimbrel off the books and could re-tool pretty quickly with that freedom and that kind of haul from a contender.
Cosmo2
Bryant is a better trade chip. Kimbrel is expensive and do teams trust that this sudden resurgence will last? Plus the whole everyday player vs reliever thang.

BTV says Tigers say no to the Abrams-Baddoo trade.

Thanks!

Abrams is the only talent in that trade. The Padres are not in the habit of trading their best prospects for salary relief, which is all that trade would be.
Deleted_User
And Eric Hosmer is in the same category as Giancarlo Stanton and Stephen Strasburg when it comes to tradeability.
Hudson6
Last year Will Myers contract was basically untradeable. Fans all over this site said San Diego would have to include Gore just to get rid of Myers. That didn’t happen. Now they will need to include Abrams, a top 10 prospect in mlb, just to get rid of Hosmer? Please!
The Padres have no need to trim payroll right now and have zero interest in trading Abrams.
1984wasntamanual
Are you trying to argue that wouldn’t have been necessary? The fact that they’re still stuck with Wil Myers being garbage probably shows that teams did not want him.
Hudson6
It tells you that the Padres value prospects like Abrams, Tatis and Gore too much to trade them for salary relief. Fans always make these proposals and they never happen.
Deleted_User
Wil Myers IS untradeable. And so is Hosmer. I’m not saying the Padres will (or should) trade Abrams just to dump Hosmer. But if that’s what they wanna do then that’s what it’s gonna take.
Also, the suggested trade wouldn’t be simply “dumping” Hosmer, as Akil Baddoo looks like a long-term building block for Detroit.
DarkSide830
idk, Baddoo has the potential to be a massive piece for DET
BobGibsonFan
MLB trade simulator accepts Hosmer Abrams for baddoo grossman.
Myers would move to 1b. Baddoo to left and grossman is 4th outfielder. Padres save money and have a very talented outfield. I dont see why it’s such a terrible idea.
Abrams is blocked at short and 3rd. Why not trade him?
Hudson6
What do you think the Royals would say if you suggested Akil Badoo for Bobby Witt Jr.? How about Seattle if you suggested Badoo for Rodriguez or Kelenic? They would laugh at you. Abrams is that same class of prospect, yet you think the Padres SHOULD do it as long as it gets rid of Hosmer? The Padres disagree. So do I.
Badoo has a .381 BABIP this year. He is due for some SERIOUS regression.

LOL

@Hudson6 bruh, I never said the Padres should make that trade. I said that, according to BTV, the Tigers would be the ones to vote down that trade as constructed. If you take out Grossman they say it’s about equal.
Of course KC wouldn’t trade Witt and Seattle wouldn’t trade Rodriguez or Kelenic for Baddoo straight up. But if they were also shedding a contract as bad as Hosmer’s there is definitely room for discussion.

“ What do you think the Royals would say if you suggested Akil Badoo for Bobby Witt Jr.? How about Seattle if you suggested Badoo for Rodriguez or Kelenic? ”
You miss the entire point of having to include a Abrahams tier prospect with your rant. It’s to get rid of the ridiculously dead contract. Your “comparisons” have no such big money, 4.5 year connection to a negative WAR player.
Further, saying the Padres didn’t cave with Myers/Gote proves they wouldn’t cave with Hosmer/Abrahams is idiotic, unless you were in the negotiations. You don’t know how close they were to taking such a deal. And you don’t know what they may do in a different situation. The only way that helps your case would have been if the Padres had managed to trade Myers without attaching a premier prospect. But they did not.
Heck. Maybe watching Myers fail repeatedly for most of the last 5 years makes them more open to this type of move with Hosmer
BobGibsonFan
There are so many Karens on this site… it’s just a suggestion for goodness sake.
Think of the Padres for a minute… they just spent big over the past couple off seasons and they did a very good job of it. They picked up Machado, Grisham, Caritini, Cronenworth… Snell, Darvish, Musgrove… They built a very solid team to strike NOW! And where are they? They are in 3rd place behind the Giants and Dodgers. The two teams with the best records in baseball. They are looking at a 1 game playoff in LA. If they could add a couple OBP and solid glove guys to the outfield, that might be the difference between a one game wildcard and sitting the first round out.
I think the Padres should consider improving their team. Even if it costs them a top prospect.
On Baddoo… in the past 2 months, he has cut down on his strike outs… improved his walk rate… shown he can steal a base, can play defense in left and CF… He won’t be the Padres number 4 hitter, but most likely a bat at the bottom of the order. He has severe splits… so if a lefty comes in, then go to a right handed hitter. But as long as teams throw out right handed pitching, he would be a huge advantage in your lineup.
If not Baddo, then they should find a way to improve their offense.
BobGibsonFan
Hudson
I think the Tigers would seriously think of a deal with Torkelson and Miguel Cabrera for a young outfielder.
They would probably say no, but they aren’t close to being a first place team. If that piece would improve a playoff bound team and give salary relief… I think they’d do it.

Cleveland values defense at catcher so the Indians would not have any interest in Kirk. Mark P. is correct. The Indians have no plans to rebuild. They have no reason to trade JRam.
ldoggnation
Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe I didn’t get the memo. It’s the 4th of July. Where’s the flags, patriotic uniforms, flags on the bases and pregame demonstrations and fly overs.
Is that tomorrow?
DarkSide830
i think observing a day-specific holiday is stupid, but whatever.

Good point dog…..

Been awhile since I saw King Kelly ask a question…..

Adell is not killing AAA.. near 50% K rate, last month has been ATROCIOUS.. still an awful outfielder.. let him grow more!!! why rush?
A'sfaninUK
It’s actually insane that the level and volume of talent the Angels could get for Trout and Ohtani could probably get them into the World Series in under 2 years. Gotta be frustrating to have players that teams would give their best 8 players (including prospects) for each of them. Could flip the team into a beast but nope, the rest of MLB gets to never see the two best talents because they play on an irrelevant franchise.
DarkSide830
the Angels will likely just continue to spin their wheels and fail to understand how to build a pitching staff.
californiaangels
a couple years ago I’d always sit around with friends and make up trout trades…and honestly I agree with you . the only reason I wouldnt trade ohtani is because we simply need pitching. the Angels when healthy can hit with the best of them, 4 hitters in that lineup that straight mash with an ops over 900… bulpen is killing us!
MetsFan22
People really think other teams have had it worse bc they have a little more injured players than us total… it doesn’t work like that. It’s who has been hurt. The Mets have lost the most projected war to injuries out of any team. ESPN showed it today…. We would be running away with the division rn…
FredMcGriff for the HOF
Braves are coming to reclaim the division. Get ready.

LOL… I needed a laugh!

shoot, let me get the popcorn out. cage match between you two perhaps?

that title sounds like a joke

I get this feeling that Kris Bryant could be headed to the Yankees. It’s just a hunch as it looks like Judge could be on the way out.
aussiegiants53
Marlins need Bats hey, would Bart, Armani Smith and Canario get it done for Trevor Richards?
LarryJ4
Trade adell now while his value is “high!” Well idk if it’s at the highest points it’s been. But with the way he’s reacted to coming up, then going back down and playing even worse, he just seems to be one of those “never lives up to the hype” prospects. Better unload now before you sit on him too long and you have a failed investment with no return on your hands.
