Lloyd Emerson
A nice accolade for Kris Bryant before he gets traded…
anthonyd4412
Barely an all star but raises his trade value
Robertowannabe
Being named to the all star game does not really help your trade value. The trading team will owe the player a bonus.. the team that is receiving the player will not have to pay anything extra because the value has already been set. The only thing that increases value is more than one team competing for the player and getting into a bidding war.
Cosmo2
Yea an all star appearance does nothing to your trade value whatsoever
BasedBall
I think AS games matter more to fans than to GM’s.
WAR_OVERRATED
All Stars appearances may mean fans favorite = more money in attendance, park advertising, sponsorship, tv and radio ads, etc. Right?
Tigers3232
The label of being an All Stat means little for trade value. The popularity and production that got one to All Star Game is what boosts value. That said, some who are All Star snubs still have boosted value due to their popularity and production. However a player who gets All Star nod only cus every team must b represented doesnt have any enhanced value due to get All Star nod.
mike127
With that logic does that plummet Trevor Story’s value? Not a single team cares if Bryant or Story made the all star team if they are interested in them.
Ully
Is Gregory Soto the equivalent of Mike Sharperson making the All-Star team?
TheRickestRick
Was he really the best option out of Detroit?
Kaelus80
Honestly, Mize deserved it more.
zoinksscoob
Can make a legit case for Jonathan Schoop as well.
ericl
I agree. I thought Schoop was the obvious choice for Detroit
Tigers3232
Schoop has definitely been all star worthy. I thought for sure he’d have been the lone Tiger or him and Baddoo would get nod.
Steve Garvey's Son
But Schoop is a first baseman this year. No chance he was making it.
tigergreg
Badoo, Mize and Schoop all better options,
stefisclou
With Soto’s glove being removed by umpires in the game today, Mize may end up representing Detroit after all.
tigersfan1320
That was over the color of the glove, nothing to do with any sort of sticky substance
Brick House Coffee Tables Inc
Or Steve Swisher for one of the bad late 70s Cubs teams.
sherlock_
Grandal and Bauer snubbed
BasedBall
Walker Buehler deserves the nod over Bauer, he’s been better across the board except for K’s.
SoxRewl
Buehler is having a fantastic season. Strange not seeing him selected. I’m sure he’ll be one of the first replacements.
86mets
Bauer can’t be allowed in the AS game. He’s kinda under investigation for alleged DV at the moment. And I suspect the 7 day administrative leave will be extended.
dodger1958
Grandal is batting below the Mendoza line. He didn’t deserve to an all star.
rememberthecoop
And again…another poster who doesn’t understand the relative value of batting average vs OBP.
Brew’88
I agree with Dave Stewart
Sfgiants4l
T-bone snubbed
Dustyslambchops23
Why no T Bone!?
Chief Two Hands
T-bone, the ladies are gonna love ya.
A'sfaninUK
A’s have basically the best record in baseball, but 1 all-star. Sure. Whatever.
Halo11Fan
Right now the As are a wild card team and not close to a playoff lock.
Allen Adams
How many games back of the Astros? 3 and Who has the best record? Boston.
SoxRewl
Yeah, but, you know, they’re basically the best.
But for real I was shocked none of their pitchers made it. Bassit and Manea got snubbed by the rule where every team gets a player.
xtraflamy
How about the fan base votes for the A’s then? It’s all stars, not necessarily best players. It has been that way forever.
Philly A's
Wait until they move to Vegas! Every casino will require an All Star vote for the A’s with every bet!
24TheKid
Now that was a really bad attempt at humor.
seattlehof24
In what fantasy world do the As have the best record in baseball right now?
jjd002
It’s that UK math.
Cosmo2
Who got snubbed? Canha is hurt. Trivino?
GangGreen23
Bassitt and Manaea got snubbed. Much lower ERA’s than Eovaldi.
Dumpster Divin Theo
If a player gets snubbed in an empty stadium, does it make a noise?
Zerbs63
The A’s have the 9th best record in baseball.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Was it over when the Gwrmans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Halo11Fan
I guess it was between Guriell and Walsh. Neither would have been a wrong choice.
Scrap Iron
I think Walsh has the edge on Gurriel.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Guriell just made a funny face
kcroyals
Scott Barlow snubbed…he’s having a great year….
Dumpster Divin Theo
Jah! Without Barlow the Royals would only be 33-50
bucsfan0004
Rangers get 3 guys while the Rays, A’s and Mets get 3 total? Lame
Halo11Fan
Give specifics. Who got snubbed?
whynot 2
Walker comes to mind
SpendNuttinWinNuttin
Meadows
GangGreen23
Bassitt and Manaea both have Lower ERAs than some of the Starting pitchers chosen.
Adolis Garcia – 20 Homers but only batting .270. Lots of guys with similar stats.
Rangers have 3 All Stars but the A’s have only 1, just sayin’.
Rangers29
A’s, Rays, and Mets are way more rounded than the Rangers. They don’t need 3 All Stars. We’ve got Gallo, Gibson, Garcia and then a prayer.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Way more rounded. Is that a more palatable way of saying obese? I think Curvy is the term you might be looking for
Dumpster Divin Theo
Funny. Lame is also the new left winger the Rangers drafted out of Sainte Jean Du Richelieu Quebec. Except its pronounced La-may.
Baseball dude
Aroldis Chapman, huh. Looks like a loss for the AL
panj341
Cole also not doing well, last couple starts very mediocre. Hope they don’t use either one. They may both pass on attending.
Baseball dude
It’s interesting that Cole started having big problems after the crackdown on foreign substances !!!
mlb1225
Wonder who is all going to be part of the final vote. I’m sure that there will be a few replacements as well. Some pitchers probably are going to pitch before the break starts and teams won’t want them to play. Same with maybe a few position players. Plus you never know a short term injury could keep someone out of the game.
DarkSide830
Final Vote is no longer a thing.
wishy2
Thank God. Hated it
Dumpster Divin Theo
Wonder-Wanda. Classic John Cleese Freudian slip.
dodger1958
Kenley Jensen not on the team? What a joke.
BasedBall
The all star team can’t be all Dodgers.
We got to let some of the other guys play too.
angelsfan4life
Dave Roberts wants to manage a game, he doesn’t have to worry about Jensen blowing in the 9th
dodger1958
He wouldn’t. Jansen is having an all star season.
angelsfan4life
Yeah he is so good he lost his closer role in the playoffs last year. To a starting pitcher. Who had never been a closer before. Every Brooklyn Trolly fan I know are counting down the days until he is gone.
Cosmo2
Jansen: 1.34 ERA, 1.4 WAR for half a season of relief work. That’s pretty darn good.
BasedBall
That’s how every fan base feels about closers not named Hoffman or Rivera.
Jansen has been a stud, every year for LA
DarkSide830
As a Phillies fan, I find it wild that JT was named. and honestly, Akil Baddoo and Christian Vasquez were robbed
Ben K
Taijuan Walker is a snub in my opinion.
dodger1958
Justin Turner not named? Bryant is named?
Walker Buehler not named?
fredziffel78
Would love to have those guys be part of team, but opportunity for every Dodger not selected to get some rest for the stretch run.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Buehler? Buehler?
DarkSide830
also a shame Suarez didnt get a nod, but understandable
Rangers29
I’m so happy Gallo got the nod. He’s played his arse off this month and totally deserved it.
Doug Dascenzo
You can’t be serious. Hitting a few dingers the week before the game doesn’t make you an all-star. He’s been trash all year.
Jean Matrac
You’re the one that must be joking. 20 HRs, (tied for 7th) 886 OPS, 143 OPS+, 8th in OBP, 1st in BBs, is far from “trash”. I wouldn’t mind that trash on my team.
mlb1225
@Doug Dascenzo Gallo is second among AL right fielders in wRC+, wOBA, OPS, leads them all in home runs, and is first in fWAR. Case to be made he should be the starting RF even.
vtadave
Can still delete Doug.
zoinksscoob
NL pitching is so deep, they left Max Scherzer, Taijuan Walker, Marcus Stroman, Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, Freddy Peralta, Pablo Lopez, Sandy Alcantra, Kenley Jansen, and Edwin Diaz off the team. That’s almost an entire other NL pitching staff!
Players’ vote also screwed things up, especially in the NL; Betts and Soto are great players, but they’re not having All-Star years. I don’t think Gallo is an All-Star at all; that spot should have gone to either Randy Arozarena or Mitch Haniger.
And Mike Zunino??? Really?
Dodger Dog
Betts is 10th in the league in WAR
mlbdodgerfan2015
I don’t think Betts deserved to be an all-star this year. Obviously a great athlete and talent but an off year so far. I can name 8 Dodgers alone who were more deserving this year. Muncy, Jansen, Turner, Buehler, Bauer, Taylor, Smith, Kershaw. I’m surprised that Buehler and Jansen didn’t make it. Turner could have also made it.
mlbdodgerfan2015
He’s actually tied for 13th among outfielders. He doesn’t deserve it this year.
Jean Matrac
You do know, of course, that every team must be represented, right? Mike Zunino is regraded as one of the best defensive catchers in the game. plus he has 18 HRs, and a 134 OPS+.
So if you take Zunino off the roster, you have to replace him with another Rays player. Which guy from the pitchers, IFers, or OFers do you remove from the roster to replace with a different Rays guy?
fredziffel78
God love Kershaw, but he’s not all-star worthy this season. Use the time off wisely.
calguy
AND Anthony DeSclafani, maybe cuz they can’t spell his name.
solaris602
Sobering that the Rays’ lone rep is Zunino, but a testament to the fact that in Tampa the whole continues to be greater than the sum of it’s parts.
Sideline Redwine
Maybe you are not paying attn, zoinks. Zunino leads AL catchers in HR’s I believe, and has hit rockets all year. His best year by far. And his defense….
He has been the best Rays player this year, hands down.
DarkSide830
if he’s only hitting HR then put him in the derby, not the ASG.
ericl
Zunino is hitting .200. Sorry, that isn’t an all-star.
Cosmo2
It is if his overall value is more than other options.
Tdat1979
Actually he’s 2nd in HR behind Salvy Perez who is starting the game.
2020WorldChampions
@zoinksscoob Mookie was picked by his peers. By the players not the fans. And the players don’t get it wrong. Mookie is 10th among NL position players in Baseball-Reference WAR. He’s performed like an All-Star even if it’s a down year so far by his standards.
mlbdodgerfan2015
Mookie is a well-liked guy and obviously talented. Not surprised that players voted him in. Still doesn’t deserve to be an all-star if you’re basing it on performance on field. If he’s an all-star there are a lot of all-stars not going to the game.
Jean Matrac
What happens if Eduardo Escobar gets traded before the ASG? Does someone from the D’backs have to be named as their sole representative, and does Escobar get removed?
sidewinder11
Could be similar to what happened with Samardzija when he was traded from Cubs to A’s before the ASG. The outcome of the game still mattered at that time so he wasn’t allowed to play for the AL. I would imagine that Escobar would still be able to play, especially if he’s traded within the NL.
sidewinder11
As far as the DBacks getting another All star named…. probably not unless they are added to replace someone else that’s injured. Kettle Marte certainly would be there if he’s healthy but that’s about it. Carson Kelly was also doing well before he was hurt
DarkSide830
Pavin Smith and Josh Rojas arent bad options.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Or Carl Everett from the Rangers to the White Sox. Reps his new team without replacement I believe
Eric M Tanner
I am very happy for Bryan Reynolds.it was well deserved.
Oldschoolandthemets1980
Where is walker from the mets
vtadave
Probably in New York getting ready for the game.
sufferforsnakes
Shane Bieber over Aaron Civale? Proof right there the AS Game is a joke.
mike127
Tribe, you do understand that it was the PLAYERS that voted Bieber over Civale, right? Ask the PLAYERS if they think the game is a joke.
sufferforsnakes
That makes it an even worse choice.
IHateJamesDolan
As a Yankees fan, Chapman in there is the biggest joke of this whole thing. He sucks this year.
jonbluvin
I hate the “every team must be represented” rule. Tanking teams usually have zero all-star level players.
SpendNuttinWinNuttin
Pirates are tanking and they have 2 should be starters
brewers1
Not sure why Burnes deserves the nod over Peralta for the Brewers. Should have been Freddy
mike127
Burnes deserves the nod because the players chose him. He was player elected. Not saying Freddy isnt deserving but that’s how Burnes gets there.
stubby66
Narvarz the catcher deserves it too
DarkSide830
Narvaez should be in over JT. he’s at best the 4th best C in the NL this year.
mp9
Whatt?? NO BERRIOS got 2 be kidding me
Cosmo2
Why does everyone think Berrios is so great? Doesn’t seem like an all star to me.
mlb1225
Berrios isn’t bad, but he’s been inconsistent. In both 2018 and 2019, he went into the break with an ERA hovering right around 3. Then in the second half, he had an ERA above 4.50. Overall, he has a 115 ERA+ since 2016 which is like a high-end 3/low-end 2 starting pitcher.
Ham Fighter
Yusei an all star yea!
Cap & Crunch
Freeman over Muncy as the starter is laughable
Big miss by the fans w Cedric
miltpappas
Be nice to see Mullins get some at bats.
dodger1958
Chapman, ERA over 4.5 doesn’t belong. Not even close.
Cole has an ERA approaching 3.
ButchAdams
I’m a rangers fan, and I’m shocked we got 3, esp Gallo. Dude may hit homers, walk and play defense. But I have a hard time wrapping my head around an all-star having that batting avg. And, although, he deserves it, didn’t really expect Gibson. Figured he gets overlooked bc he is a ranger. Garcia is all I expected us to have
etex211
As far as the Rangers go, Kennedy and IKF were both much more deserving than Gallo.
I expected Garcia and Gibson, and nobody else.
User 1104686089
See the above post man. Gallo is one of the best RF in baseball this year and there is a pretty good case to be made that he should stary in RF. IKF is a pretty good ballplayer but is barely an average hitter in terms of OBP, way better SS out there in the AL. Kennedy not a chance.
ldoggnation
History!!!! Ohtani first to be chosen as a position player and as a pitcher. That’s the top story.
ButchAdams
If u read and comprehended my post, I almowledged his power, walks, and defense (that’s rf) but said I have a hard the buying a all-star starter that strikes out as much as him and batting avg as low as his. A ranger fan and fully aware of his strengths and weaknesses. Reading is fundamental
Cosmo2
You gotta look at a player in total and not cherry pick stats like batting average. You may acknowledge his other stats but then you clearly ignore them in favor of BA and K rate.
Brad Kane
It’s nice to see a lot of all stars here that are first timers especially some of the starters like: Shohei Ohtani, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Glad the MLB is in good hands.
sufferforsnakes
MLB will never be in good hands as long as Manfraud is commissioner.
DarkSide830
figurehead…
YourDreamGM
Yep most fans hate commissioners. That is why the billionaires have them.
carlos15
Manfred is a disaster
etex211
This ASG is a political show for the commissioner. I won’t watch a minute of it.
brickhaus
Rays have one of the best records in baseball and the only all-star is a catcher with a sub-.200 batting average? I know Glasnow is injured but it’s a joke he wasn’t named, and in the past plenty of people who were already injured were named and replaced.
Zunino is deserving, but also kind of marginal. Fire Hydrant and Wendle also should have received consideration. A lot of the issue is just the Rays way.
Sideline Redwine
If you are judging Zunino by batting avg, that is yr mistake. HR hitter, great defense.
I love the Rays, honestly cannot think of anyone else who deserves it. Feyereisen? Kittredge? Meadows is up and down…like most guys on the team.
And who cares about the game anyway. Meaningless and politicized.
DarkSide830
the mendoza line is the mendoza line…
Cosmo2
Mendoza line is an arbitrary, meaningless number. Can’t judge a player on only one stat; definitely can’t judge a player according to a made up statistical threshold.
YourDreamGM
Record and number of all stars is irrelevant. Unless you have 10 all stars or something. They don’t have a obvious choice and only so many spots. In case of a tie the other player gets the nods. Mlb isn’t too concerned if the 356 rays fans tune in or not.
GriffeyJrFan
Have you ever thought that the whole game plan against the nationals is not to let Soto beat you. He has no protection at all and is not being pitched to. Why would you pitch to him. With the catcher, Robles, castro down the line I would just walk him. He is an all star in my mind. Guys that have played a half a year with no track record should not be an all star in my opinion. Do it for an entire year and then we will talk.
SpendNuttinWinNuttin
Reynolds should be starting but Atleast he’s getting his due
YourDreamGM
Well that’s like your opinion man. You should look at the starting outfielders stats compared to Reynolds and see how many categories Reynolds is better in. Let me know. If you still stand by your statement I can then mute you. If you change your mind I want to see a John Cena level apology.
mlb1225
Reynolds is 4th in NL outfield wOBA, wRC+, OPS, 3rd in fWAR, OBP, batting average, and 5th in SLG. So while there are 3 OF’s better than him, it’s not like the gap between him and one of the starting OF’s is that large and an argument to start Reynolds over Winker has merrit to it.
The offensive difference between Winker and Reynolds is a .029 OPS, .011 wOBA, and 4% wRC+ difference. Reynolds has a higher fWAR by an admiditly small .5 margin.
Scrap Iron
How is Eovaldi an all star over Civale, Bassitt, and even Glasnow?? Not even sure Barnes from Boston deserved it but there is a case to be made. No way Eovaldi deserves it.
carlos15
How is Chapman on the AS team with an ERA near 4?
Scrap Iron
How is Eovaldi on the team as well? Neither deserve it over several alternatives.
xcfan
JP Crawford is the most deserving Mariner. Best defensive SS in the AL and leading the team in hitting.
PeteWard8
Guerrero Jr Olson Walsh AL stacked at 1B
seattlehof24
Much as I love JP, I think Yusei is the better choice.
bravesnation nc
Good for Adam Frazier. Looks like Pittsburgh came through for the guy. I’m glad Ozzie Albies didn’t get didn’t get snubbed
YourDreamGM
More like national voting base. Atlanta fan base is much larger than Pittsburgh. Happy to see a reasonable person though. Frazier should have been then choice but it was really close. If Frazier was only hitting .299 it would have been Albies.
joeyrocafella
No Taijuan Walker?
YourDreamGM
Why would he make it when walker buehler who is better in most if not all stats was left out?
YourDreamGM
Same with Peralta.
Gwynning
Happy for everyone who got in… many snubs mentioned in comments here but I’ll throw Machado in there, too.
YourDreamGM
Agree. Machado has the 39th best ops in baseball. It’s more than a snub. It’s tragic.
rememberthecoop
I wouldn’t use “tragic” when talking about baseball. Tragic is when someone dies of COVID…or someone is maimed on the battlefield. But not a baseball snub. It’s called perspective.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Some of the posts on here are tragic
sonorawind
As a pitcher, Ohtani has given up 35 walks in 60 innings and has a WHIP of approaching 1.3.
Only averaging 5 innings per start.
But, making it both ways makes for desperately needed MLB headlines.
phatboi69
Whip of 1.3 is fantastic while you’re leading the league in bombs.
I’m super excited to see what he can do in the asg and hopefully bring out the best in the angels in the 2nd half.
sonorawind
No beef with him making it as a DH. But the pitching aspect has eliminated SOME OTHER PITCHER who is more deserving..
Dumpster Divin Theo
This mean he gets to enter the game twice? That would be cool
Zerbs63
Walker Buehler not an All-Star? He’s lost one game since Aug of 2019 and the loss was a game where his offense was no hit. He’s gone at least six innings every start this year. His ERA is just above 2.00 and whip is 0.9.
How can the team with the best ERA in baseball not have a pitcher make the all star team?
SanDiegoTom
No buehler? No machado? Hm- sweet popularity contest.
sufferforsnakes
Ohtani as a hitter? Fine.
Ohtani as a pitcher? Not worthy.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Kinda like the Rock n Roll hall of fame. Alice Cooper? Fine. Wayne and Garth? Not worthy. Not worthy.
Bill nd
Quit a few who could be traded before the deadline, probably increases their value.
JoeJackson4HOF
Though I thought he deserved it, I really didn’t expect Jake Cronenworth to be named. The fact that he just bedevils the Dodgers probably helped. But, absolutely, a well deserved honor. It didn’t take long to go from “the Pham trade” to “the Cronenworth trade.”
Brew’88
Cron has highest WAR at 3.1 of any 2B in NL, he deserves
rememberthecoop
Mookie Betts??? When guys having a tough season get elected – like Betts – it makes me wonder what the true meaning of “all-star” should be. Is it who the fans want to see, regardless of stats? Like back in the day when Reggie Jackson would get the nod even after being washed up? Or, should it be the player having the best statistical season at the time of voting? I guess one could make arguments both ways. I say the latter.
Cosmo2
Betts is having a “tough season”? He’s on pace for over 5 WAR. If that’s a “tough season” relative to his expectations, doesn’t that exactly make him an all-star? He’s having a great season.
rhillmer
Just getting around to seeing this but how in the world do the rangers have 3 all stars lol
pbfog
Lol Chapman. I’m a Yankees fan, but he’s blown 4 saves.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
It’s ashame Willson Contreras was snubbed. Hopefully Schwarber isn’t snubbed and is the starting DH for the NL
