The Mets are selecting the contract of right-hander Jerad Eickhoff, the team informed reporters (including Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News). Righty Nick Tropeano has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to create active roster space. A 40-man roster move has yet to be announced.
Eickhoff was previously selected to the big leagues last month. He was designated for assignment not long after and passed through outright waivers. After electing free agency, Eickhoff quickly re-signed with New York on a minor league deal and made it back to the majors.
The 31-year-old has made two starts for the Mets this season, tossing ten innings 0f five-run ball with six strikeouts and four walks. That was his first big league action since his 2015-19 run with the division-rival Phillies. He initially looked like a solid back-of-the-rotation starter, but his results with the Phils tailed off over the last few seasons.
Eickhoff has spent the majority of 2021 at Syracuse. He’s tossed 46 frames with the Mets’ top minor league affiliate, working to a 5.09 ERA with decent strikeout and walk percentages (22.4% and 6.8%, respectively) but an elevated home run rate (2.15 HR/9).

Phillies could use Eickhoff today…

Chris Sanchez seems to be doing well so far.

I do not understand why Trpoeano cannot stick with a ML team.He may not have the “stats” to prove his worth, but he has consistently pitched reasonably well throughout his career.
Another guy like this is Casey Sadler. The Pirates could have used him for a number of years. So what if he does not strike out ten batters a game.
The new found predictive statistics should never trump the proven game results.
Monkey’s Uncle
Sadler I know had injuries and I think occasional issues with control, but overall I agree with your premise and examples. If the pitcher is getting guys out consistently, I don’t care how he’s doing it.
Metsin777
Tropeano looked awful the other night for the Mets. You cant be throwing 80 mph and expect to get batters out on a 90 mph fast ball that he rarely throws. Teams know this and see that he really isnt that good
Mendoza Line 215
Mets-I am not saying he is another Nolan Ryan, and that he has great stuff, but he may be in a low point.Everyone has a bad game, but over his career, his results have been reasonably good.
It boggles my mind that guys who throw 95 but cannot hit the broad side of a barn keep on getting chances thinking that someone will teach them control.
Teams know that also.

It’s about options. He will be back. But he has options so he will be the one sent back and forth.
Mendoza Line 215
I assumed that he did not.
Big difference.
Thanks.
StudWinfield
It’s not about options it’s about not wanting to expose any else on the 40 to waivers and/or promoting a prospect on the 40 who’s not ready yet.
findingnimmo
Hence options

Amen.

I, OTOH, understand completely

Called it. I figured once he cleared waivers that he’d elect FA and likely resign with the Mets. Hopefully he can stick around a bit this time. I’m going to say a DFA of Robert Stock will open the required 40 man roster spot.

Tarpley DFAd

That makes sense because Tarpley isnt getting anyone out in AAA either. And Anthony Banda just became his replacement there.
mookiesboy
at least Scott tries to improve the fringe
Sandy under the Wilpons never did that
LordD99
That was a Wilpon issue, not an Alderson issue.
EasternLeagueVeteran
I agree. It was a Wilpon issue not an Alderson issue. Alderson understood about keeping some experienced bench help around, with Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson and Carlos Torres and Tyler Clippard. They all contributed in 2015 to get the Mets to the World Series before Bernie Made-off crashed their budget.

Bad move. He gave up 2 runs in one inning. The Mets had a 5 run lead . They blew it .The Pirates scored two runs apiece off of Familla ,Eickoff . and Diaz. .They lost 6 to 5. The problem is really management. All the Mets hire for their managers are all minor league instructors. Rojas was a Mets minor league instructor, Terry Collins was a Dodger Minor league instructor. Callaway was a coach. When was the last time the Mets hired a manager with experience? I believe it was Davey Johnson who managed in Japan. You can blame that cheapskate Wilpon for this..

Get rid of this idiot Eickhoff. And that ashole Familia.
