The Mets announced they’ve designated outfielder Billy McKinney for assignment. The move creates active and 40-man roster space for third baseman J.D. Davis, who has been resinated from the 60-day injured list as expected.
New York acquired McKinney from the Brewers in late May amidst a series of injuries in the outfield. Between the two teams, the left-handed hitter has picked up 202 plate appearances and compiled a .213/.282/.415 line with eight home runs. That’s right in line with his career .225/.288/.430 mark (91 wRC+) over parts of four seasons at the big league level. McKinney has flashed some of the power potential that once made him a fairly well-regarded prospect, but he’s been a little too prone to strikeouts (26.3% career rate) and hasn’t drawn enough walks (7.8%) to cement himself as a regular corner outfield option for clubs to this point in his career.
New York will have a week to trade McKinney or expose him to waivers. He’s out of minor league option years, so any team that acquires the 26-year-old would have to keep him on the active roster or again make him available to other teams.
WideWorldofSports
billy is hof material
Skip Church
Is there a HOF for AAAA players?
Taejonguy
Wide, he has 26 career home runs. How many do you have?
hiflew
Why do people believe you have to be better at something in order to criticize someone for not being good? Wide not being a HOFer, doesn’t mean he can’t call out someone else for not being a HOFer.
koos
Why do idiots hide behind a phone and make snarky comments because they could never throw a ball accurately from point a to point b.
Doug Dascenzo
Why do some idiots get mad about some idiots, being idiots to other idiots, while sitting with idiots, talking about how everyone in the world, are pretty much idiots? To be frank, it’s just so idiotic.
Taejonguy
criticism is fine… mocking a player that is a professional athlete is just uncalled for.
DJ-VJ
Perhaps the greatest quote in history…lol.
metzfan
metzfan if I had to guess I would say you are 12 years old. Half of enjoying Sports is criticizing and finding fault and giving your thoughts on what you would do differently if you were manager to shut the hell up and learn what the world is like. If you go to a restaurant you are allowed to say you don’t like the food without your moron friend telling you you aren’t a chef should have no right to criticize the food.
Bill
If you really are serious when you say “Half of enjoying Sports is criticizing and finding fault”, you really must be a lot of fun to be around. And while I tend to be very critical myself, I’m nowhere near as bad as you apparently are. And that includes at restaurants, unless there actually is something wrong with the food.
Ham Fighter
I hope this is a joke
WideWorldofSports
sorry thought this was for Billy Martin
Al Hirschen
Why?? He has produced with runners on base and pinch hitting
Bill
Who should they have removed instead?
Ham Fighter
Remove the name rumble ponies because it’s and awful team name
phenomenalajs
I’ll take Rumble Ponies over Iron Pigs.
Bill
Wasn’t that name voted on in a poll? They had to rename themselves from Mets because they weren’t able to sell merchandise with that name on it, so they had to change it (well, they didn’t HAVE TO but they decided to).
MetsManMetsFan86
It was a vote. I grew up in that area. Pretty sure first fan favorite “Binghamton Stud muffins” was shot down. Thought it would have been a pretty hilarious team name.
ChrisMonte
It was either him or Peraza
Canosucks
How about removing from the 40:
Jerad Eichhoff ( mister back to back gopher ball)?
Brandon Drury
Travis Blankenhorn
Fat Chance Sisco
Villian Last chances
metzfan
metzfan it has nothing to do with the 40 man roster. It has to do with the fact he has no options left to be sent to the minors.
dswaim
They could’ve optioned Guillorme and released any of the aforementioned to create room on the 40-Man and active roster. They have Villar, Davis, Peraza, McNeil and Guillorme on the roster now for 2B and 3B. One of those guys are going to get squeezed out of playing time either way
Cosmo2
Producing with runners on base isn’t a talent. You’re either a good hitter or you’re not.
whyhayzee
It’s called situational hitting and it is a talent.
Cosmo2
How so? Players talent changes according to the situation? Most players take the same swing no matter what. This is just some old school notion that’s never been backed up by any data.
Colt 45
“Most players take the same swing no matter what.”
Yes, most players do; that is why you don’t want those guys up situationally, or, really, on your team at all.
The good players adjust to try to achieve what is needed in a given situation, and the GREAT players achieve it more often even than their normal high level of performance.
Colt 45
For the last several years, guy I want to see at the plate when it matters is Yuli Gurriel (and Brantley more recently).
Do you know that, lifetime, Yuli, with the bases loaded, is hitting .510?
Well, he was, anyway, a minute ago. But he just did it again, so it’s higher now.
Colt 45
Yuli Gurriel had a lifetime BA with bases loaded of .510, until a few minutes ago when he did it again so it’s higher now 🙂
Colt 45
Yuli leads MLB with 2 strikes in count, BA .278
You must have heard 100s of players talking about shortening up, etc, with 2 strikes. Your position on this one is COMPLETELY untenable, and, in fact, overwhelmingly, demonstrably, wrong.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Billy didn’t seem so bad, 8 hrs, After one really good year I wonder if NY has put too much stock in Davis? I’d like to see him succeed. We’ll see.
Bill
So they should have DFA’d Davis instead? Sent Davis to AAA and found someone else to DFA?
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Slow down Hoss, the article doesn’t say anything about rehab. it just says he’s been reinstated. Is Davis ready to jump into the pond & catch fish? I hope he is
Cap & Crunch
Curly – Yes…… he was absolutely mashing last week
This dude was born to hit
If I’m a team like KC DET BAL this is exactly the type of dude I’m making a gamble trade on today if Mets like any of my current pieces for a 21 stretch run. Id even eat some Familia money if needed to help Mets CBT trade deadline limbo
Adolpho67
Love how Met fans think Davis is so good lol. One year of decent production and they think he’s worth KB! Davis comp is more like Naquin.
Cap & Crunch
Id take 3.5 years of Davis for 0.5 from KB
Not a Mets fan either
Ham Fighter
100% picked up in a few days by someone else like the pirates angels etc
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
I don’t think the current front office is putting much stock in Davis at all, given the (in my view) high likelihood that they’ll end up trading for Bryant or Donaldson. They’ve never come across as particularly committed to him when asked during interviews. They were even talking about giving Rosario reps there before he was traded.
I don’t think it’s necessarily connected to McKinney anyway. He did a decent job as a band-aid, but his days as a Met were always numbered barring additional injuries.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
As a former Met fan & a present Braves fan, please stay away from Donaldson. Another huge contract, this time with Minn & now they want to give him away. These huge contracts are buyers remorse after only a year. Let Minn eat his contract like a bad clam.
Ghost of past pirates
I think shemp was the smartest stooge. They even made a mask of his face
sergefunction
Current ghost Benjamin Franklin had soapstone countertops.
Mendoza Line 215
Ghost-Shemp was the wittiest Stooge. She was bread in old Kentucky but she’s just a crumb up here.
Larry was meh.
Mo was clearly the smartest and was one of my heros as a kid.
But Curly was clearly the best looking Stooge.
LAforreal
they’re making room….
The Natural
JD Davis will be a Cub soon and Bryant will be a Met.
Adolpho67
Lol
Cosmo2
Remember when some folks were saying that McKinney was so good they could dump Nimmo?
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
I’ve never seen anyone suggest that, but it doesn’t shock me.
jdgoat
I could see him as a Joc replacement. He produced pretty well with the Mets, he should at least latch on somewhere in the majors.
mils100
McKinney did a good job for the Mets. He filled in when the team had a million injuries and had some key hits for the ballclub to keep them afloat. With injuries happening every day, would think he wouldn’t clear waivers. I see a team like Cleveland as a fit since he costs nothing. and they need any bats they can find.
joeyrocafella
He was a very good acquisition, played very well considering all the injuries the Mets had… Hope he finds a spot on another team somewhere.
stymeedone
Given the choice of Mazzara or McKinney, I’d take McKinney. I would hope for better choices , however.
metzfan
metzfan If you mean Peraza, that would be foolish since he has played great defensively and hit a bunch of clutch home runs to win ballgames and McKinney hasn’t done anything in well over a month and they have enough outfielders now and I probably going to add an infielder which will allow Davis to move to the Outfield if he doesn’t go with a trade
plmathfoto
I would’ve sent down Guillorme , I think he still has options
Bill M
I believe he does but he still has more value to the team than McKinney
jim stem
Looks like Lindor has an oblique issue now. Guillorme stays. He or Villar become the every day SS unless they rush Mauricio.
Bill M
We don’t know the extent of Lindor’s injury but if he’s out long term, that might be a good thing for the team.
Cosmo2
How is that good? Even struggling with the bat he’s one of the most valuable players on the team.
Bill M
Because he’s struggling with the bat
Cosmo2
He’s still better than most short stops and certainly better than what the Mets would replace him with so no way it’s a good thing.
Bill M
I guess we’ll find out, Kreskin
The Natural
McKinney was acquired by the Cubs from Oakland in the Addison Russell deal. They might bring him back..who knows?
Michael Chaney
I can absolutely see the Indians giving him an audition down the stretch. If he plays well, he can be in the plans for next year because they badly need someone to prove themselves as a long term option. If he struggles, he can be part of the 40-man roster purge this winter to make room for guys that need to be protected from the Rule 5 draft.
Metsin777
This team is so frustrating, Mckinney is a better hitter than Conforto and yet you DA him and keep the guy thats batting under 200. Should of released Miguel Castro, hes been awful
tstats
People take time to recover after injury like conforto is.
Ryrodaddy
I hate mets fans. And I am one.
Doug Dascenzo
I don’t dislike Mets fans, I just dislike Metsfan22. I’m sure the rest of you are…..well a couple of you are all right.
andremets
Sad that you actually hate someone for loving their team. I think Metsfan22 is just a homer and hilarious and I’m proud we root for the same team
angt222
I think the Mets should have optioned Guillorme and just moved Fargas to the 60-day IL.
andremets
I belive Fargas is actually healthy now and got optioned to AA.
Oldschoolandthemets1980
The yanks, Indians, Braves I could see giving him a chance as well as Anaheim.
vinny5130
They should dFA almora he sucks
