4:14PM: Peterson’s shift to the 60-day IL is actually due to a new injury, as the Mets told reporters (including Newsday’s Tim Healey) that Peterson fractured his right pinkie toe.
11:34AM: The Mets have swung another deal, this time acquiring outfielder Mark Payton from the Reds for cash, per Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer (via Twitter). Payton was recently designated for assignment. The Mets are sending $75k to the Reds, per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (via Twitter).
Payton has been assigned to Triple-A Syracuse where he’ll serve as injury depth for the Mets’ oft-injured outfield. Though Brandon Nimmo, Michael Conforto and Dominic Smith present an intact trio at the present, the Mets outfielders have been stung by the injury bug quite a bit this season. Having just lost Johneshwy Fargas to the Cubs, the Mets now replenish that depth with the addition of Payton.
David Peterson was moved to the 60-day injured list to create the roster spot, per Tim Healey of Newsday (via Twitter). Peterson has been out since July 1 with an oblique strain.

I don’t understand that move
Deleted User
It’s MLB Trade Rumors. A trade has occurred. An article was written. That’s typically how it works here.
Domingo111
Just a depth move for an emergency reserve player that can be called up if (or in the Mets case when:)) an outfielder gets hurt.
Noboby you want up long term but for two weeks he can fill in and if you don’t need him anymore you just DFA him like the reds did.
seth3120
@SteveNebraska
He probably only knows three or four players on his favorite team. He doesn’t understand it takes a lot of guys to win and even a move like this as insignificant as it may be could be the difference between a game or two depending on how that depth player performed in the small amount of action he’d see if someone went down. We’ve all seen what happens to teams with a handful of stars with no depth or no bullpen. If the injury bug hits them they are really in trouble. If he’s your best current option for depth then it’s a good move to make even if it doesn’t move the needle a ton. Most trades aren’t blockbuster deals
bucsfan0004
Its a minor transaction and doesnt deserve its own article, more of a round-up type scenario with minor transactions. I see they added Peterson’s IL status to the article
@DaOldDerbyBastard
You’re talking about it aren’t you bucco?

If the rays aquire a player from the Mets for cash, does the manager get sent?

Right now we may need him, too.

Go with Bonilla. Hes already getting paid so wont affect payroll.

He slugged pct in 2020 of about 220 great pick they should have paid us
Brooklynmetsfan 2
To bad we only have a 25 man roster. I would love to have him as the 36th man on the team.
Flyby
26 man actove mlb roster with 40 total for team roster. so assuming he is the 41st man on the team or he would be part of your active mlb roster depending on which one is incorrect

Time for loads of comments crapping on Mets for picking up some organizational filler.. It’s so tiresome.

Just wondering why we moved McKinney then…
Cosmo2
Cuz all these guys are interchangeable and it has more to do with roster maneuvering than anything.
darkstar61
Correct. McKinney was on the 40 man, Payton may not be since he was acquired by trade, not a claim
Gives a needed place holding Outfielder to a AAA he is optionable to, while possibly freeing up a 40 man roster spot for needed ML players
This isn’t the type of move to complain about
neo
yes, when the Titanic is going down it’s most important to shuffle around all the deck chairs
darkstar61
No one is rearranging anything
They couldn’t send McKinney to the minors since he was out of options. They had to lose him. AAA teams needs OFers too though. So they got a new OFer they could send to minors where he is needed
How is this so hard for people to grasp? How is it something that can ever be complained about? This artile shouldn’t even really have comments, let alone the foolish whining about nothing it has attracted
VonPurpleHayes
Injury depth. Not bad.

You? You could be doing literally anything else on earth but you’re here reading and commenting about it.
Gwynning's Anal Lover
This is a good move and provides some depth without giving up prospects. The Mets are making some good moves at the deadline without breaking the bank. I wonder if anyone else made a claim for Payton before going to the Mets?
Metsin777
So let me get this straight, they get this dude Payton for nothing when they literally could of kept Mckinney for nothing whos a far better hitter and is easily a better hitter than Conforto, this organization is so poorly run
Cosmo2
When you say that McKinney is a better hitter than Conforto you kind of are letting the world know that you know nothing about baseball. McKinney is a constant waiver guy for a reason: the whole baseball world disagrees mightily with your take.
BadBenjamin
Think McKinney was out of options and the roster spot was needed for the guys who came back from the IL
Cosmo2
Correct. But way too logical of a response considering the original post.
carlos15
He’s a small step above signing someone out of the stands during a home game.
Cosmo2
Funny thing: that’s actually been done before.
DocBB
LOL $75K. This goes to show you just how friggin cheap Bob Casellini and the Reds are…
mlbnyyfan
They need to change the rule on players options. Players change teams more often than people change socks. Everything hinders on whether a player has a option or not how does that help
Cosmo2
The rules on player options are designed to maximize a fringe player’s ability to collect a paycheck. These people have lives, bills to pay. But, yea there might be a better way to achieve that.
C.K.Rebel
It definitely didn’t help that MLB consolidated the minors. That put alot of people out of work and the way that injures are managed these days , it makes a whole lot of sense to expand the 40 Man.
Big phil
They need their money for skyline chilli..lol
darkstar61
How does it show anything other than he wasnt needed on the Reds so he was sent somewhere he was needed?
These types of transactions happen endlessly all year long, be it through trade or claim
earmbrister
It was $75k PLUS a two year supply of soda for the clubhouse vending machine …
LongTimeFan1
The Mets are idiots. Instead of keeping the talented and energetic Fargas, they opt to replace him with a lessor player. They had already made mistake DFAing McKinney. Fargas has the tools and heart to shine.
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
This is so silly. Fargas is energetic, but at the end of the day he’s AAA roster filler, just like McKinney or Payton. They didn’t just dump Mookie Betts
darkstar61
Fargas is also a nearly 27 year old minor league vet of 9 seasons, with just 147 games above A ball and merely 7 in the MLB. And they had signed him off the minor league scrap pile themselves in January 2020
If you are rearranging your franchises plans to accommodate that type of disposable filler, then you are really showing organizational foolishness
NMK 2
I largely agree with you (plus an organization needs players throughout its system), but I was hoping to see more of Fargas in Queens. He had a nice, albeit brief, start but there was a spark. Sometimes guys are late bloomers; see Dickey, R.A.
Cosmo2
LongTimeFan? How long? You have apparently no idea how roster considerations work. Been around long enough to know that these guys are all constantly being shuffled around, signed, released by everyone? See mine and Darkstar’s comments above if you want to understand.
Cosmo2
Good on you for trying, Darkstar, but it’s like trying to argue with someone who thinks the world is flat. Some of these commenters know nothing about how professional baseball works.
darkstar61
Haha, thanks. I just wish I even cared about the Mets instead of being here just frustrated, playing whackamole on fools over something so unbelievably meaningless
Deadguy
Its crazy to me that people are still bought and sold, but instead of calling it that we call it a “trade for cash considerations”
Monkey’s Uncle
BaseballReference.com in their transactions section of player bios used to refer to those as “purchases”, which is how most media used to write them up. In older days they would just say players were “sold” to a team. But recently BaseballReference changed all of the “purchased” transactions to read “sold player rights to”. Maybe that’s supposed to be more dignified sounding, I don’t know.
Cosmo2
Those unnecessary changes in terminology seem like garbage to me. Oh, sorry, I mean rubbish.
mkeyankee
Reds throwing in the towel?
baseballnerd20
Castellini already sold all of the towels.
joeshmoe11
By trading a dude who was in AAA and who was like 8th on their depth chart?
BPrice's 77 F-Bombs
“Castellini is highly competitive”, umm yeah.

Roster depth for an impending trade?
Cosmo2
Doubtful. If their making a trade it has nothing to do with him, teams don’t generally work backwards like that.

They can also have Senzel and Shogo. Not living up to what the Reds hoped they would be.
