The Marlins are “working on moving” Starling Marte, Adam Duvall and multiple relievers, according to Peter Gammons of The Athletic.
The fact that the team is selling is not surprising. They have been firmly in rebuild mode for years, in spite of 2020’s surprise foray into the expanded postseason. They currently have a record of 43-57, sitting in the basement of the NL East with 0% chance of making the playoffs, according to FanGraphs.
Marte’s departure has seemed inevitable since he and the team halted extension talks a week ago. Since that time, he’s been connected to the Astros, Phillies, Yankees and Giants. That popularity isn’t surprising, given Marte’s track record and excellent production in 2021. He currently sports a wRC+ of 139, which is above his previous career high of 132, set back in 2014. When combined with his defensive production, Marte has already accrued 3.2 fWAR in just 63 games this year. He is still owed approximately $4.7MM of his $12.5MM salary this year, which could have luxury tax implications for any team that acquires him. Though Miami could potentially eat some of that in order to get a better prospect return.
Duvall, like Marte, is also an impending free agent, though he does have a mutual option for 2022. Although he can’t match Marte’s production, he could still be quite useful, especially with his bat. Duvall’s 22 home runs have been somewhat offset by a high strikeout rate of 31.6%, but he’s still produced a wRC+ of 107 on the season thus far. His $2MM salary also makes him much more affordable than Marte.
Gammons’ tweet implies that the Reds and perhaps others inquired on Marlins shortstop Miguel Rojas, but were rebuffed. General manager Kim Ng has previously intimated that the team would hold onto Rojas, who is 182 plate appearances away from his $5.5MM option vesting for 2022.
As for the bullpen, the Marlins should have plenty of options to cash in their veteran relievers for prospects to help their rebuild. Yimi Garcia is an impending free agent and is playing on a modest salary of $1.9MM. Over 36 1/3 innings, he has a 3.47 ERA and 15 saves. Ross Detwiler is also heading towards free agency in a few months. His 6.25 ERA may be unsightly, but he’s left-handed, striking out 26.1% of batters and is owed only about $300K for the remainder of the year. Another lefty, Richard Bleier, is having an even better season, with an ERA of 2.82. His strikeout rate of 20.3% is actually below average, but represents a career high for the groundball specialist. He’s playing on a salary of $1.425MM and has one year of arbitration control remaining. Anthony Bass could also be of interest to some clubs. The 33-year-old righty has a 3.79 ERA this season and is making a modest $1MM this year. He also comes with two more years of potential control, being under contract for $3MM in 2022 and a $3MM club option for 2023.
ChiSox_Fan
Can he play 2B?!
Benjamin560
No kidding!
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@ChiSox_Fan- No but Bryan Reynolds can.
PoloGrounds62
The Mets can use him. He can bat third and we’ll move Nimmo to right. Conforto blows.
Metsin777
Couldn’t of said it any better myself. Conforto strikes out or pops up to the infield whenever we need a hit
VonPurpleHayes
Are you guys even Mets fans? Conforto has turned a corner lately.
Say Hey Now Kid
Isn’t he streaky though? Has he turned a corner or will he go back into a slump? Obviously you don’t bench him though. Let him walk and sign Marte this off-season
Cosmo2
Really don’t want the Mets signing Marte. Can we please get a younger player who’s not likely to decline at any moment? I’d rather have Conforto than Marte. And Duvall isn’t having much better a season than Conforto. (.280 OBP? No thanks!)
VonPurpleHayes
Almost everyone in the league is streaky. Conforto is not really an area you need to upgrade this year.
brave from the woods
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Duvall back in Atl….
Drew Waters Bat
Maybe with Marte in tow?
DarkSide830
and the kitchen sink?
brandons-3
Not bringing back Duvall was the Braves biggest mistake. Sure, you can argue it was not bringing back Melancon, Greene, and O’Day in the offseason. But it was at least based in some thought the Braves had enough arms plus an improved rotation for it to make sense in theory.
Not only did they falsely assume Pache was ready, but they gave themselves no alternatives in the event he wasn’t.
formerlyz
Didnt Duvall hit like 10 of his 16 HRs against the Marlins? Some of that is kind of going the other way this year, but the one constant in life has always been Braves beat the Marlins, so I wonder how much that really hurts, more than Ozuna and Acuna, and a couple of their pitching injuries
TomahawkChop
It wasn’t a mistake to not bring back Duvall. He’s either a homer or an out. That being said, he’d be a good addition for the rest of the season thanks to all of the injury issues. Melancon didn’t want to come back and the Braves offered more than SD. Greene and O’Day didn’t need to be back and have proven as much this season.
Cosmo2
Duvall gets on base less than 30% of the time. Letting him go was smart.
ChipperChop
@brandons-3 I’m really not sure how Duvall has anything to do with Pache. The Braves said they wanted Acuna in right. So even if they had Duvall it didn’t provide a backup plan to Pache. It would have provided a backup plan to Ozuna but nobody saw that coming. Plus fans act like signing a player is a one way street. If Duvall signed with the Braves he would have started the season as a bench bat. If you were Duvall would you want to have a chance to play every day to attempt to build value or ride the bench waiting on an injury? I have no doubt that factored into him going to the Marlins.
Drew Waters Bat
Made worse by the fact they decided to keep Ender around who cost twice as much for a quarter of the production. What a crap year for the Braves. Just means they will win it all this season or next season. Gonna be great.
AA, I hope you do something with the prospect capital. Getting tired of seeing everyone’s value destroyed by this up down sending. Lots of wasted time. Feels like the team has been waiting in water for months. Get everyone to AAA and just let them stew. Need to break that chain.
48-team MLB
They had to keep Ender around because no one was going to take his contract. He will be gone for good after this season.
Stallion97
Reds need relievers badly. Bottom 5 bullpen in the league had blown multiple leads so far this season.
deweybelongsinthehall
The fun part is guessing who will end up where and then the even more fun part (second guessing) begins.
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
You don’t say?
seamaholic 2
Too many sellers not enough buyers. Prices are gonna be super low and as a result this deadline is gonna be a dud. Can see it coming a mile away.
VonPurpleHayes
Deadline is already not a dud after the Padres blockbuster.
luther.elmo
Frazier, not so much, but wake me when Bryant, Baez, Rizzo, or Scherzer gets traded.
xfactr
Rizzo and Baez will get QOs. I don’t see anyone trading for that. Relief pitching and Davies are the trade bait.
ChiSox_Fan
White Sox to get Contreras for Collins and a P.
Cubs don’t like players who want to win and speak up!
Mjm117
Marlins going to be sellers & buyers and should(have to) do well during the tread line. That way they set themselves up for the offseason and begin to truly contend starting next year.
formerlyz
That being said, the Marlins never get value in trades, whether they’re selling or buying. They always end up giving up way too much either way, and I just feel like something like that is coming, but we’ll see.
Mjm117
Dude Marlins are won big and lost big in trades in their history. During this regime they’ve don’t both. EVERY ORGANIZATION (maybe except the Rays) and lost big via trade.
Btw the Ozuna trade to the Cardinals was a mega win.
Mjm117
Goddamn autocorrect!!
formerlyz
Alcantara was lucky. Gallen I had in my version of the deal for like a year before the deal went down, so that was good. Still could have been a better deal. Everything else besides the Jesus Sanchez deal fits into what I said
Mjm117
as much as I might regret this…what was the illustrious deal you had conjured up 1 year prior to the Marlins/Cardinals finalizing theirs, aside from Gallen?
formerlyz
For some reason, I couldn’t remember 1 of the players in the deal coming back to the Marlins, which is funny b/c after I found it, I laughed for multiple reasons, 1 being the fact I somehow forgot, and the other b/c…well, it would be obvious once I mention it. Honestly, this is literally 4+ years later, so it’s kind of hard to go back to that mindset, and think about how things were at the time. Most of the guys were in A ball, but every piece I mentioned ended up in the big leagues, and more valuable than they were considered at the time. Also, I personally didnt think Alcantara would end up as he has these last couple of years, though it had little chance of happening. I thought he was going to end up a reliever, with a 3rd starter ceiling…without spending too much time on it, I found a post from right after the 2017 season, so half a year-a year later than I was first talking about it, so slightly less years of control on the Marlins pieces, when first talking about it value wise, and a couple of those prospects had moved up slightly…also, it wasnt just Ozuna going out. It involved multiple relievers as well.
I’m not going to lie, I feel like it’s pointless to mention, and there were worse deals…
Mjm117
Yes…I regret asking.
formerlyz
Lol I regretted mentioning it. I feel like it would look dumb to mention, at this point, in 2021 perspective…and ya there are way worse deals
Ducky Buckin Fent
@MJM117 –
That’s how I see it too. Marlins have good, young starting pitching. Ng is going to want to take advantage of that. I think that was part of the motivation behind extension talks with Marte.
Would love to see Cash swing a deal for Marte. I like that sinker/slider mix of Bass’ too. I would imagine Ng & Denbo can find plenty of prospects they like in the Yanks system.
formerlyz
Another Yankee fan here claimed it was somehow way too much lol, but Starling Marte for Yoendrys Gomez, Josh Breaux, and Trevor Hauver, and potentially Ken Waldichuk…maybe they throw in a bullpen arm with more than a year of control, like Bleier, or Floro, or 1 of their “backend” rental relievers, like Garcia or Bass, and grab another lower level pitching prospect…
All of those guys arent close to the big leagues right now, with the exception of Waldichuk having had 6 starts in AA. Hauver doesnt even really have a defensive position, though I liked him going into the draft last year b/c he can hit. Breaux honestly is also a pretty high variance prospect, and arguably isnt a catcher, so maybe a better combination of guys than this would make more sense
Mjm117
Marlins would fall over themselves trying to pick up the phone and say “Yes, we agree! ” if the Yankees offered such a deal for Marte.
Id be happy with CF Florial and 2b Hauver for Marte.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I’m really bad at trade proposals myself. Even BTV doesn’t seem to help me all that much.
But for Marte & a RH reliever with team control past ’21 that’s probably not too far off. Seems maybe a little heavy on the Yanks side but that could merely be my homervision.
I don’t think these teams would have too hard a time coming to an agreement based on how familiar Ng & Denbo are with our system.
Also: from what I am seeing Bass would not be a rental.
formerlyz
It’s not far outside of what the Marlins gave up for Marte, and what we’ve seen go for others, as recently as a couple of days ago, except these prospects arent close to the big leagues
Mjm117
@Ducky
Marte and RP like Bass who does has 1 year remaining is something Marlins would be selling to bring back young long term controlled hitters that are ready to play within 1-2 years.
Let’s see what happens this time on Friday.
formerlyz
I’m not going to lie…I just realized Bass is controlled beyond this year
Ducky Buckin Fent
No worries.
I once referred to Nick Williams as a “good defensive outfielder”. One of the Phillies fellas politely pointed out his -27(!) OAA.
So, yeah.
Been there, @formerlyz. Looks like a couple more years. Cash *loves* his relievers. & he mentioned relief pitching specifically. I can easily see some type of “consolidation trade” for a RH reliever with some control as the Yanks will be losing a number of bullpen arms over the next couple seasons.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Should be interesting, @Mjm117.
I just think our respective front office’s – due to their familiarity – could broker a deal. & Marte & a guy like Bass (along with at least 50 competent starting pitching innings) should be enough to keep my Yanks in the WC 2 hunt.
But yeah.
We will see Friday.
formerlyz
Bass does have the extra year, plus the team option for 2023, but not sure what his value is. Without looking up the numbers, he has been hit hard at times, and given up a lot of HRs, and has been terrible in amy semblance of high leverage situations, but I could be wrong. I would consider Bleier, Floro, and even a rental Garcia to have more value than him
formerlyz
I’ve heard the Marlins arent trading Rojas or Aguilar, and Cooper hurting his elbow may have kept them from moving him now, although he may be on the move in the offseason…
Personally, I would keep Cooper over Duvall, and obviously, as mentioned previously, I would give Marte the 4th year, but if they’re moving him, hopefully they at least get value for him, b/c that is a must, in my opinion. He is a star CFer, at very low cost for the rest of the season, and for a potential FA deal, as has been talked about, and he is literally the type of player they’re looking to trade for, in the first place…
Any relievers should be in the market, either to add to a Marte deal, as part of a bigger deal for other pieces, or separately…that being said, obviously Bleier and Floro would have more value than Garcia or Bass
I would also probably hold Rojas, although I’d be more open, in the right deal. Marlins have a few guys that they could give a look up the middle, although Rojas is already a known, and a team leader
Mjm117
Marlins are going to be sellers & buyers and should(have to)do well during this deadline. Set themselves up for the off-season and add even more talent to start truly contending by next year.
ajrodz1335

Bring Duval back to ATL!!! No leftfield solution right now.

Why wouldnt the Reds just bring up Barrero, if they’re looking for a SS
Lrtexasman
My guess is Marte to Astros for Javier, Straw, and a top 25 prospect.
Strosfn79
Way way overpay for Marte.
He’s a rental. Straw or Javier EACH have more trade value by themselves!
The MLB trade simulator values Marte at 8.9
Straw is 16 and Javier is 22.1
Based on expected production over the course of controllable time.

What did Jeter do to him? Inquiring minds want to know.
Mjm117
Hopefully @48-TeamMLB tells us.
48-team MLB
Incorrect. I was in favor of the Marlins relocating long before Jeter came into the picture.
Mjm117
So it was Loria who f***ed you over?
48-team MLB
It was no one. I just don’t see the point of MLB in Florida. They get no fan support and Miami has been completely irrelevant for the majority of three decades (obviously excluding 1997 and 2003).
Mjm117
Fair enough. Unfortunately for you, neither the Marlins or the Rays are going anywhere. I would dare to suggest that one should learn to accept that reality.
48-team MLB
Rays relocation has been discussed several times. As I’ve stated before, if the Southeast is only going to have three teams then it makes no sense for two of them to stay in cities where they get no fan support. Charlotte, Nashville, New Orleans, Memphis or Raleigh would draw better than any Florida city.
Rsox
The Yankees could use Marte so they would probably trade for Duvall. Astros and Phillies should be in on Marte as well.
A’s missed on Nelson Cruz so they may have some interest in Duvall. Maybe the Red Sox since Duvall can play First Base, even though its been a while since he lined up there (2018)
Cosmo2
Duvall is not good. He hits some homers. That’s it. No winning team is gonna improve by inserting him into the everyday lineup.
MarlinsFanBase
Duvall is more of a Dave Kingman than Dave Kingman.
Rayforever21
Rays will not pursue Marte nor Duvall, actually if the braves arent sellers they should get Marte and Duvall, but if they are sellers, they should send Morton to the Rays for Shane Baz if they want to go all the way. Letting Baz go it’s a kick in the nuts, but they need an alpha dog in the rotation as their ace is hurt.
MarlinsFanBase
Marlins trade thoughts:
Marte – We need to get a young CF in return. The CFs we have in our organization now are pretty much 4th OFs (Brinson, Sierra and Harrison; Mesa Mesa is not finding his way up either)
Duvall – I’m curious to see what we actually get for him.
Yimi Garcia – Yes please.
Detwiler – Yes please.
Bass – I’ll drive the guy to the airport and pay for all of his travel and relocation expenses. Bass Fishing = relaxing; Miami Bass = cool music; Anthony Bass = the only Bass that has been wrong in Miami.
Too bad Cooper got injured because we’d need to move him too.
ludafish
Cooper is on the only offensive upside we have for the next two years. He’s been great when playing this year. Yeah I know “when” is a big deal but he doesn’t cost much and can be controlled till 2024.
Definitely agree on anything else. I got gas money for Bass’ trip for sure. Or maybe we carpool and send him off in style.
I’ve heard Arepa man is staying put which I’m ok with as he’s basically our mascot. After getting interest and saying he would accept a trade they say MiggyRo is staying. So it should be interesting what happens. All I know is if they don’t sign or acquire a lockdown closer they just better have a competition for closer next season. Just automatically giving it to Bass and leaving Bender off the roster was a giant mistake. There are bones for a decent pen on the team and in the system, just have to make them work for it.
