Rangers right-hander Kyle Gibson is enjoying a career year, reaching his first All-Star Game and posting a 2.87 ERA and 50.8% grounder rate over 113 innings. There are some red flags (a 4.46 SIERA and a below-average 20.4% strikeout rate), but for a veteran arm controlled through 2022 on an $8MM salary, Gibson has been drawing a lot of attention. Here is the latest on Gibson as the deadline approaches…
Latest Updates
- Spencer Howard is part of the Phillies’ talks with the Rangers, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. The two sides could be discussing a deal that would see both Gibson and Ian Kennedy go to Philadelphia.
Earlier Today
- The Rays may be the leaders to acquire Gibson, The Athletic’s Levi Weaver tweets. Tampa Bay was initially linked to Gibson a few days ago, as the team has continued to overhaul its starting and relief pitching mix.
- The Phillies are a new team in the Gibson sweepstakes, as MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that Philadelphia is “making a hard push” for Gibson’s services. The Phils are known to be looking for help at the back end of their rotation, behind their top trio of Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, and the currently-injured Zach Eflin.
- The Padres were also rumored to have interest in Gibson earlier this week, and they have “maintained” that interest heading into this afternoon, according to The Athletic’s Dennis Lin. Twins right-hander Kenta Maeda is another name on San Diego’s radar, but the “price tag has been too high for the Padres’ liking,” which could indicate that the club is perhaps now turning more towards Gibson or other rotation options.

I doubt the Phillies will get him, but finally!
VonPurpleHayes
They won’t. I’m being overly negative because in my mind it subconsciously increases the chance of moves happening.
Captain Dunsel
That’s the same reason I often turn off close games when they are winning.

Rangers fan here, I don’t know what Phillies pitching is right now, but Gibson has developed a bought of, wildness over last 2 or 3 starts. Don’t know if it’s mechanical or if he’s lost focus, just being on Rangers. I wouldn’t give up the literal farm for him though.

This is why I am not dying to trade him. Depend entirely on the offers, but I suspect it won’t be a crazy high offer and I kind of like him pitching in arlington next year and let’s let Cole Winn get fully developed before we have to start the milage on his arm.
FloridaSportsGuy
Rays are the new Blue Jays, in on everyone.
Baseball 1600
Rays and Giants seem to be doing the same thing, expressing “interest” in everyone but will probably wait until right before the deadline to make all of their moves, hoping teams will accept lesser returns out of desperation to trade their players.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of return there would be in Texas ate a bunch of his salary. I doubt it’s huge but 1-2 quality prospects for Gibson while paying at least half his salary seems like the right move for Texas
User 1104686089
I’m not sure it will require much money to get the deal done, Gibby doesn’t make much. One good prospect and a lotto young guy probably gets it done I suspect.
TaylorLH
I just wonder if it helps on the return.
Let’s say the Rays are serious. If it’s something like like Cole Wilcox (lighting up A ball) vs pay most of his salary maybe throw in a bullpen arm for Shane Baez I gotta think they pay his salary
User 1104686089
I think Rangers fans should temper their expectations on this one. Gibson has never been really all that good, he just looks good this year and has added a cutter that has helped him out some, but he is a known quantity honestly. I don’t think us eating his salary will get us a top prospect or anything.
Rangers Homer
I agree, Chris. If it is Gibby and Kennedy, I’d like Rickardo Perez and a lower tier prospect.
User 1104686089
Can Rickardo be traded? I thought he signed ths year? I was thinking like a FV 45 guy and someone from the lotto pick category. I just don’t buy the Spencer Howard rumor, that seems crazy to me. Take it if they offer it I guess haha!

Dave Dombrowski’s assistant (on phone to the MLB channel interns):Mr. Dombrowski with the Phils just wants to let you know we are “way in” on this (reading off of a piece of paper) Kyle Gibson guy with the Rangers

Made me laugh.

Now that berrios is gone , this is who Mets should go after if they don’t get a potential meaningful starter Phillies or braves might catch them ! Bryant and or story is a unneeded luxury
PoloGrounds62
Perfect fit for the Mets
tbfern
So from what I’ve read we’re apparently getting Story, Gibson, Bryant, and Gray. (Almost had Berrios & Schwarber too) We’re just in on everybody huh? Lol. Might as well get Maeda & Sano while we’re at it!
And to top it off, all of them for Chris Archer.
angt222
Probably fits best with Philly.
DarkSide830
I’d be mad if we gave up a real massive asset for Gibson.
VonPurpleHayes
Lots of signs to stay away from Gibson, but the Phillies can’t keep throwing Moore, Valezquez and a bullpen game every 3rd to 5th start. Something has to be done.
DarkSide830
yeah but rentals
Steviefigs
Dont worry Rangers cant negotiate
Joel Peterson
If you trade Gallo you sort of have to trade Gibson right?
User 1104686089
Maybe? We have a ton of young arms in the system. It is always nice to have veterans to eat innings and protect the workload. Gibby is pitching well but he was originally signed as protection, obviously if the offer is good it all gies out the window haha.
Bill Kane
Phillies need to get him and Ian Kennedy from Texas. Give them 5 trash prospects like they gave us for Hamels back in the day.
User 1104686089
haha someone hates Nick Williams
TaylorLH
Texas is gonna look for arms most likely and outside of Abel there’s not a ton of higher end guys.
For both guys and not including Abel it’s gonna ask Morales Miller and Medina
User 1104686089
Actually I think Texas will look for the best player regardless of position. We kind of have a ton of arms in the minors over the next few years. I wouldn’t be shocked if we grabbed a catcher or a corner bat if a decent prospect is to be had.
kingbum
This is who Boston should be after and hopefully John Henry says fu** the luxury tax let’s win a pennant
Confortoismyspiritanimal
Why aren’t the Mets involved. He fits their needs perfectly.
TaylorLH
Man if it’s Howard + a prospect or 2 Texas has to pull the trigger for Gibson and Kennedy
TDM
Not Howard. Stop this trade. Phillies should be SELLING. Please don’t trade away Howard. He is the type of player the Phillies need…he’s brilliant and should be part of the back end of the rotation now. A blister on his finger derailed his last very fine start.
htbnm57
He’s brilliant for 2 or 3 innings until he turns into Velasquez. He might be a decent RP but he has continually sucked as a SP.
Bob333
Phillies will screw it up this trade will not do anything for the phils if it happens they are a 500 team no matter what with this group of overpaid loser babies.SHOULD BE SELLERS
