The Dodgers have claimed right-hander Jimmie Sherfy off waivers from the Giants, according to multiple reporters (including MLB.com’s Maria I. Guardado and Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times). Righty Bobby Wahl was designated for assignment to create roster space.
San Francisco designated Sherfy for assignment last week. After being released by the Diamondbacks last August, Sherfy caught on with the Giants on a minors contract during the winter and tossed 10 2/3 MLB innings this season (posting a 4.22 ERA and 19.6% strikeout rate). Sherfy totaled 45 1/3 innings over parts of the 2017-19 seasons with Arizona but didn’t see any big league action in 2020.
The Dodgers will now give Sherfy a look in their organization and may be pretty quickly parting ways with Wahl, who was acquired on another waiver claim off the Brewers’ roster just two weeks ago. Wahl’s tenure with the Dodgers has thus far consisted of just one total inning over two appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The right-hander has 15 1/3 total innings on his big league resume, with 13 of those frames coming with the A’s and Mets in 2017-18 and the other 2 1/3 innings coming with the Brewers in 2020. Wahl didn’t pitch at all in 2019 due to a torn ACL, and he has a 3.90 ERA and some big strikeout numbers (31.29% strikeout rate) over 233 career innings in the minors.

Will the last one out of the bullpen…

Head scratcher. How do the Giants not trade this guy in the week following Sherfy’s DFA?
Cincinnati has a need in the bullpen and so do Philly and Houston. All contending teams. And Zaidi can’t spin a small deal for a very serviceable reliever? Wow. And the worst part is the Dodgers claim him. Double bad on you Zaidi.
kdubbs716
Either of those teams could have picked him up before the Dodgers but didn’t.
theroyal19
In this situation he’d have to clear waivers first to be traded.
It’s possible an AL team tried to get him but the Dodgers put in the claim and no other NL team did.
Waiver system goes by same league first, worst record to best. If no one claims in same league then the opposing league follows same record format.

Actually, when a player is DFA’ed his former team has 7 days to trade him. After 7 days he’s open to waivers and if unclaimed can be reassigned. Just like when SF DFA’ed Matt Wisler and traded him to Tampa Bay a few days later.
I just find it hard to believe the Giants couldn’t find a trade partner and/or no one else with a worse record than the Dodgers in the NL doesn’t claim this guy.
theroyal19
I find it hard to believe the Giants DFA’d him so quick. 8.2 innings and only 1 earned run in June. 2 bad outings to start July and then he was done. 2 solo HRs, 2 singles, a walk, and a hbp for 4 runs

And yet, that is what happened. If you don’t start with the assumption that Friedman can see around corners and through walls, then you’d probably have to conclude that there wasn’t much of a market for Sherfy for a reason.

Yeah, looking at it out of context, it seems like the Giants gave up on him, maybe too quickly. But in a wider view, I think the fact that every team in the NL passed on him, except for the last team with a shot, tells you all you need to know about Sherfy. Seeing the lack of enthusiasm around the league for this guy, makes me believe Sherfy won’t be a Dodger very long.
BlueSkies_LA
You could say that about the majority of the faces in the Dodger bullpen. Does any team churn relievers more than the Dodgers?
AndyWarpath
Good sign for the Giants 40 man to see players being claimed by good teams.
Jean Matrac
Except the entire NL passed on him except for the last team in order. Plus, I’m not sure how long Sherfy will be with the Dodgers. He’ll be the first guy DFA’d should anyone better become available.
JohnJasoJingleHeimerSchmidt
Honestly, I think the Dodgers grabbed him just to keep the Giants from stockpiling him.
Jean Matrac
That’s possible, but still doesn’t negate the fact that no other NL team wanted him. I haven’t changed my mind that this is about as minor a transaction as you can get, and it will have close to a zero impact on either team.

Reds should pick up Wahl today. He was a Brewer. Bring him in to throw inside to Avail Garcia.. Mix it up this weekend @ GABP.
Jean Matrac
Well, I was totally wrong. I was sure there was a trade coming with so many teams in need bullpen help. I thought teams wouldn’t risk him being claimed, and would give up something for Sherfy. Instead, the entire league passed on him except the last team with the opportunity

Dodgers must focus on Berrios. Even if they have to give up Ruiz. If they get Berrios they’ll be just fine
