The Cardinals have traded first baseman John Nogowski to the Pirates in exchange for cash considerations, per the teams. St. Louis had recently designated Nogowski for assignment.
The move kicked off a series of roster changes for the Pirates. For starters, to make room for Nogowski, the Pirates designated Geoff Hartlieb for assignment, notes MLB.com’s Jeff Jones (via Twitter). They also placed Ka’ai Tom on the 10-day injured list because of a lower back strain and recalled right-hander Kyle Keller from Triple-A.
The Cardinals made their own flurry of roster moves today, but here they were simply moving on from a somewhat-limited player without a role. Nogowski surprisingly made the Cardinals’ Opening Day roster because of a strong spring. As a first baseman on a roster with Paul Goldschmidt and Matt Carpenter, however, the only role available to Nogowski was as a right-handed power bat off the bench. He went 1-for-18, walking once while only striking out twice. A bone bruise placed Nogowski on the injured list from April 23rd to May 18th.
With the Pirates, the 28-year-old can server as a right-handed compliment to Ben Gamel, with Phillip Evans moving from first base to the outfield. As we near the trade deadline, more playing could very well open up in Pittsburgh as well.
Hartlieb, 27, has a 7.71 ERA through four games with the Pirates. He will now be exposed to waivers. Keller, 28, returns to the big league club with three appearances and a 8.10 ERA to his name so far — though in only 3 1/3 innings. Keller has been very productive in Triple-A, where he has a 1.95 ERA over 18 1/3 innings with a stellar 43.7 percent strikeout rate and minuscule 4.2 percent walk rate. If those numbers translate at all to the Majors, the Marlins would have a quality arm to deploy from the bullpen.
Joel Peterson
Well it’s nice to see the team woke up and decided to make baseball decisions.
Next step is to make ones that actually impact the 2021 team……
leefieux
Not gonna happen. They’re just picking up fillins. It is a tank year. So is 2022.
Putmeincoach12
2022 will not be a tank year for the Cards.
2022 is the year they make a big push forward in my opinion with the likes of Nolan Gorman probably playing 2nd (he will be a sept call up this year or sooner?) Jordan Walker will also make a push although he is young. The arms for 2002 should be stellar and especially if they add a 2-4 type starter.
Liberatore, Flaherty, Hudson, Reyes, Waino, Mikolas, Thompson, etc…
Putmeincoach12
Arms for 2022*
Not 2002 obviously
philliesphan77
He might have been talking about the Pirates
AZPat
Cardinals fans always think it’s about STL. Lol.
Binnington50
And people named Pat aren’t always guys.
TheOtherMikeD
You did mention Waino.

Not a tank year yet. That is “IF” John Mozeliak would make “Common Sense” moves instead of waisting money and roster spots —Dumpster Diving for players.
These are players are Contending teams rejects.
Obviously if these players aren’t good enough for Contending Teams —— those same players aren’t going to make the Cardinals a Contending Team!!!
Duh!!!!!!!
How hard is that to figure out????
If Milwaukee could make a trade for an impact player in May without depleting their minor league system——— why can’t John Mozeliak do it????? Or— at least attempt strong discussions toward obtaining an impact hitter or a Starting pitcher??? Those impact players are out there!!!!
An impact baseball player is just that. —- Am impact player who helps teams be a consistent winner!!
A Number one prospect is just that—— A PROSPECT!!! A player who “MIGHT BE”
an Impact player one day.
I see no problem in trading a prospect who is currently not good enough to play on the Big team—— for a star hitter like Trevor Story or a star pitcher such Scherzer.
Both of those players have indicated they would like to play for the Cardinals!!!!! So what’s the hold up?????
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
It must be a tank year in order to hold on to Carpenter, who they’ve paid about $26 million for the last 2 years (I estimated 2020) to hit well under .200. Even Goldschmidt has become a disappointment striking out 3 times more than he walks this year . He used to be an on base animal (.398 total with Ar.), this year a paltry .320 so far.
17dizzy
Time to trade for Trevor Story right now!!!
Paul DeJong becomes the Top Utility Infielder because he can play all 4 positions.
(Carpenter finishes as a pinch hitter off the bench. Where he can get his 1-2 helpful hits a month still. But won’t add to the teams strikeout totals and less team base running mistakes).

Cardinals roster isn’t really disappointing to me ! It seems like a perfectly fine 500 caliber roster with some good fortune , it just looks bad bc brewers and giants and Padres are playing well abound their heads right now and distancing themselves from the rest of the non dodgers nl
DarkSide830
im shocked that Milwaukee is running away from anyone with the 15th best AVG in the NL.
bobtillman
They have insanely good pitching and defense, and David Sterns and Craig Counsell are as good as it gets. Still, I have to think the pixie dust might wear off at some point. At the same time, no division contenders outside of the AL East have the warts the rest of the NL Central does. So they’re definitely in the hunt.
Noel1982
Maybe it changes but cardinals braves reds seem like mid 80 win teams it’s just that this year at least for right now that mid 80s might not be that close to qualifying for the playoffs ! Even the giants just gotta go like 40 and 40 give or take to get to 90
kripes-brewers
It’s been a good run against some so-so teams. Cubs are more talented than their record shows – they went on their own hot streak a while back. Otherwise it’s been against Rockies, D-backs,Pirates. The crackdown on sticky stuff may have made an impact on the Brewers bats. They’ve been struggling with offense, but gotten hot within the last week or so. Fun to watch lately. We know those darn Cards are coming up in Aug and Sept, so it’ll be down to the wire as usual!
bobtillman
The key for us non-Brewer watchers is, as you said, “they’re fun to watch”. They play the game well, and have their “types”; being a Red Sox fan, nothing JBJ does defensively surprises me (of course, nothing he does offensively surprises me either). Adames is a piece of work; Hader, et al are, again, “fun”. And I really do respect their management, both upstairs and on the field.
Dogbone
It seems to me, that Adames is a lot more than just a piece of work, Adames is a major steal. He is a very good MLB SS.
Monkey’s Uncle
The Geoff Hartlieb experiment might finally be over. He certainly got enough chances. Not that I have any higher hopes for Kyle Keller, but we are talking about the back end of the bullpen after all.
Nogowski I know almost nothing about and his numbers don’t look exciting, but I guess that there are at-bats available at first due to injuries.
34679
I think Nogowski will rake if given a proper opportunity.
bobtillman
Maybe the Bucs can teach him their unique way of conducting home plate to first base run downs.
oldmansteve
He is a swing change away from tapping into some serious power. The right team, the right coach, he has late career breakout written all over him.
Deadguy
Like ADOLIS GARCIA?
Mendoza Line 215
Hartlieb is a converted outfielder who never learned how to throw strikes.
He did get several chances with the Pirates and looked good for a while a couple of times but could not get the ball over the plate consistently enough to stick. They need the roster place and probably hope that he clears waivers.
Mike Carlini
Damn! The Pirates will take a flyer on anyone, won’t they? Neal Huntington really screwed that franchise over with his repeated horrible trades. I would not want to be Ben Cherington right now.
YourDreamGM
NH was great at trades, only thing he could do. And don’t feel bad for BC. He has 5 years, gets to pick high in 4 or 5 drafts and trade away everybody to get more prospects. Already has a top 5 farm. Guy has it made.
Mendoza Line 215
Mike-You absolutely do not know what you are talking about based on one trade.
leefieux
I bet Will Craig is wishing that he had chosen Free Agency.
Monkey’s Uncle
Yeah, this move isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement for Craig’s future, is it?
YourDreamGM
Why so he could be unemployed.
letsholdemandgohome
Wait and see, Nogowski will be another Arozarena in a short time
dmarcus15
Another young player in Nog going to get a chance to play wish him all the luck!
Avoidlloyd75
Not every move requires that much thought. We pick up a 1B and place another guy on 10 day DL. Why not see for cash consideration?
Hartlieb and Keller are there own move.
Rsox
Cardinals keep getting rid of the best Hockey names in Baseball. First sending Lars Nootbaar down and now trading Nogowski
Gwynning's Anal Lover
Good move for the Pirates.
frustratedpittsburghpiratesfan
Holy Crap, Nutting paid cash instead of selling players for cash.
Bob Nutting mush has a minimum spend mandated otherwise there is no way that cheap a.. is spending any money in n payroll. Worst owner is n major sports. Look it up if your not a believer. Cold heated owner that has no regards for fan base. Please sell the team to someone that wants to win in Pittsburgh. The madness has to be stopped.
YourDreamGM
If spending a few hundred grand impresses you just wait for next weekend. He is going to spend 15 million.
frustratedpittsburghpiratesfan
Then will trade everyone. Rinse and repeat. Owner is cold hearted and self centered. No desire to win a World Series!! Just a money grabber. Sell the team to a Pittsburgher.
Mendoza Line 215
You truly represent your poster name!
YourDreamGM
This guy is going to fit right in.
frustratedpittsburghpiratesfan
Yep with a bunch of below Major League talent. Dollar Hot Dogs, Fireworks are the draw. Could you imagine the Yankees or Cubs operating a team like this?Shameful!
joblo
Dollar hot dogs with no buns.
Tim P
Jeff Jones works for the Belleville News Democrat, not MLB.com
Deadguy
Why do the Cardinals keep selling players like they are slaves?
Buccrazy
I like the move for the pirates. Might as well try him out. Hartlieb is a 3a guy at best, plus pirate bullpen is a strong point on this garbage team anyways
Ghost of past pirates
frustratedpittsburghpiratesfan is a typical know nothing yinzer. Hes not a fan hes an idiot
Mendoza Line 215
Maybe so,but every team has them, even the Cubs and the Yankees
frustratedpittsburghpiratesfan
Actually your incorrect. Do your research and peel back the onion on that Nutting owner.
Buccrazy
Nogowski starting tonight.
The pirates are the mlb version of the “last chance saloon”
