The Cardinals have reportedly acquired right-hander T.J. Zeuch from the Blue Jays, per Robert Murray of FanSided (via Twitter). Zeuch was recently designated for assignment. The Blue Jays will receive cash considerations, and Zeuch will be assigned to Triple-A, per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (via Twitter).
St. Louis has been extremely active in the waiver market, already snagging T.J. McFarland and Justin Miller from the Nationals. Zeuch, however, brings the ability to log innings in the rotation. That fits a particular need for the Cardinals, who currently have four starters on the injured list (Jack Flaherty, Miles Mikolas, Carlos Martinez, Dakota Hudson).
He’s been fairly reliable, for what he provides. Basically, Zeuch offers innings and groundballs. Zeuch figured to be a popular target on the waiver wire given his relatively reliable production, pedigree as a former first-round draft pick, and contract, as he not only is pre-arb, but also comes with two options remaining. The Cardinals also had a 40-man roster spot open after losing Roel Ramirez off waivers to the Mets.
gbs42
He’s probably starting for the Cardinals tomorrow.

Funny!

Yes it is!! But——It’s not funny having a GM/President of Baseball operations such as John Mozeliak !!!! Because the only type of player he ever signs during the regular season IS a players who is DFA & any player who has been lt go by another team.
Duh—-there is a REASON these players were DFA’d from other teams!!! They are Extremely washed out players on their last leg!!!!
SlippinJimmy89
Honestly, I would be shocked if he doesn’t start a game in the next couple weeks.
twisted laces
Why not Scherzer instead?…..
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
I hope the TJ doesn’t stand for Tommy John
smuzqwpdmx
He pitches to contact and doesn’t throw that hard or have extreme spin on anything, so he’ll probably stay healthy.
jdgoat
I’m glad the Zuech experiment is done. I’m surprised St Louis couldn’t find a better option elsewhere on the cheap. That type of pitcher just can’t find succes anymore unless they are a unicorn like Kyle Hendricks.
sirandrews
Teams aren’t usually letting quality pitchers go to waivers. It literally doesn’t get cheaper than Zeuch.
Why not take a chance on a former first round pick for absolutely nothing?
Deadguy
St Louis used to have lots of good options, but they traded them all
Cubs Dynasty
Ha. The Redbirds have a long history of making moves to improve. Whereas our Cubs just make moves.
Wisdom is playing LF today. That’s where Ross likes to stick players for a rest (except Happ). Ok, nothing to see here. Let’s move on.
BuJoBi
Wish Zeuch all the best. Too bad he couldn’t figure it out for us, he never really developed a strong 3rd pitch to offset the sinker/slider. Hopefully stl will be able to get some innings out of him and help em figure things out he is still young.
jboll74
The higher the era.
The better chance the Cardinals will go after you
crshbng
Not exactly a game changer. Picking up a pitcher that was dfa by a team that is desperate for pitching. Good luck with that.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Sometimes brilliance is right under your nose & you don’t realize it. Seems to be Tampa Bays mantra.
Hope he works out in STL
DonOsbourne
Averages a walk every other inning. Should fit right in.
JerryBird
The Rangers announced they want to extend Gallo. Most believe it is a meaning gesture to impress the fans that management has made some effort. What does Mo do? Doesn’t care to impress anybody and doesn’t show any effort to help the team. As a Cardinal fan.I cry with head in hand.
Hit4me
If anything he insults and talks down to the fans
Deadguy
With a smartest guys in the room smirk
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
JB, sounds like bait to make Gallo look more delicious for the up coming week.
geg42
Who would have thought that Adam wainwright would have logged the most innings for Cardinals by far at this point in the season? Go old guys!
EndinStealth
Quite a few actually. Flaherty was the only one with a shot at more innings. Taking a look at the rotation at the start of the season and it was either going to be Waino or Flaherty and Flaherty has yet to find the ability to go deep.
rocknwell
Go deep in the season? Cause he was going deep in nearly every game he pitched this season.
EndinStealth
Jack only went 7 innings twice this season and those were 7 only. The rest of them were 5 and 6 inning games. That is not going deep.
Monkey’s Uncle
I was wondering if perhaps the Pirates might jump on Zeuch given his age, pedigree and possibly being familiar with him from his University of Pittsburgh days. I’m not sure he would be better than what the Bucs already have.
Tdat1979
But can he hit? Cardinals down to their final out the other night and they put in Wainwright and his .031 batting average.
Cardinal
ERA 6.60 in current year; Mozalik again lacks the ability to judge talent….year over year.
EndinStealth
It’s depth and this team desperately needs it. Don’t make this more than what it is.
17dizzy
Okay——- then tell us WHAT IT REALLY IS—- then!! How is “Low Hanging Fruit”—-
Depth???? Now I’d go along with more Depth in debt-Not Talent!!!
smuzqwpdmx
Talent evaluation is about what his ERA will be next year. We’ll see.
tim815
Extremely aggressive in the waiver market.
Is that like refurnishing your house on late day price slashed from garage sale buys?
bassrun
Dumpster diving.

“If Zeuch could get control over his sinker he could be a good starter.
That is a big if. Most of the time he doesn’t know where it is going or it is in the center of the plate.
There is going to come a time if he is going to stick in the big leagues he has to be able to hit the corners with that pitch, otherwise he is a AAAA player.”
Dexxter
Yeah it’s true. He’s never really developed that put away pitch either. Sinker is good… but if that’s all he’s got it’s tough to be successful. Unless you can run it up to 100mph…. But he can’t.
Mario93
How much exactly is a “cash consideration”? 250k?
EndinStealth
It’s not a set amount. The two teams will decide on an amount. It’s not always disclosed, but usually far less than the 250k mentioned. If you look at these type deals that have had the numbers leak some have been around 10k. The team is going to lose him anyway so they gain what they can.
Mario93
Thanks for the explanation. Always wondered..
Deadguy
Enough to feed a family for half a year?
TheRabbitBaron
Any other Cardinals fans sick of this same old song and dance B.S.? How many horrible pitchers are we going to have to sit through? LeBlanc, McFarland, Miller…. This guy…
EndinStealth
Yeah they keep passing over all the Cy Young caliber pitchers that are available. Oh wait…..
Deadguy
LeBlanc has been decent
Big Al Secord
Zuech is a Zilch… just like Cardinals fans.
rocknwell
Why do you and most everyone else dig on the fans of all the other teams? So hypocritical. You don’t critique from your point of view? Of course you do. Are you in the know any more than anyone else. Likely not. So stop digging on fans from other teams. It’s one of the most annoying parts of reading comments on here. Add something to the conversation.
hollidayfever
Derp de derp. You sound like a mental defective.
nottinghamforest13
Remember when Dan McLaughlin was so intoxicated during a DUI stop that he peed in his pants?
Deadguy
No but I do remember Tony La Russa passing out behind the wheel
Oooo ooooo and Scott Spiezio
Devlsh
I think this is exactly the type of move this team needs to be doing. For the longest time, they just kept dragging up the same suspects from their system, ready or not. Rather than damage a young player’s progress and psyche by leaving him out to eat innings while taking a beating, grab some flotsam off the waiver wire and throw those guys into the fray. as your last line of defense.
homegrown
Wish him the best! Too early to give up on him. Wasn’t going to work for him in Toronto.
Sonny 3
I am pulling for him.
CluHaywood
I can’t believe this needs to be said, but getting a guy for cash 100% means it is not intended as a high impact move.
