The Brewers selected right-hander Jandel Gustave to the 40-man roster before the second game of today’s doubleheader against the Mets. Milwaukee acquired the 28-year-old from the division-rival Pirates last month. Gustave is active for tonight’s game in New York as the designated “27th man” for the doubleheader. The Brewers already had a vacancy on the 40-man roster, so no additional move was necessary.
If he makes an appearance, Gustave will return to the big leagues for the first time since 2019. He’s appeared in parts of three major league seasons, tossing 44 2/3 innings of 3.43 ERA ball with the Astros and Giants. While Gustave’s run prevention numbers have been solid, he has struck out just 17.4% of opposing hitters in the big leagues while walking a slightly elevated 10.9% of batters faced.
Before tonight, Gustave had spent the entire 2021 season in Triple-A. Split between the Pirates and Brewers affiliates, he’s tossed 17 innings at the minors’ highest level over as many appearances, working to a 3.71 ERA with a strong 21:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Would’ve liked to see Barker. His Low K rate relative to his very high velocity is a real oddity.

What does Barker have to do to get a cup of coffee?
MannyPineappleExpress9
I hear Starbucks or Dunkin’ will make one for anybody with a few dollars (actually, I have no clue how much it costs, but he can probably afford it..)
stubby66
Your absolutely right what does Barker gotta do to get a chance? Add him to the list of players that keep proving themselves but no chance. Orf, Cooper, Barker, Heilemann. A lot of players you see that they don’t give a chance then they go some place else and they hold there own .

Agreed…not a lot of love for the guys that do it day in and day out. Not a long term system guy but Westbrook was deserving over Robertson this year.

Sterns plays it safe. He prefers mlb experience. Ashby, small sample size, got destroyed by a stumbling Chubs offense… I just moved to Denton from Madison, WI. If you’re in the area, maybe meet at a bar and watch the Crew.
HiAndTight
Yeah, I’d say it’s a small sample size for Ashby. LOL…of ALL big league teams, saying the Brewers don’t give guys chances may be the funniest.
Ashby’s going to be a guy who plays a big role for us. His first start you saw he has elite stuff. He was just wild, jitters from his debut, but more than anything, terrible defense. Bothed DP ball, throwing error.
Stearns most definitely does NOT play it safe. Traded a young reliever with elite stuff and the stuff to be a closer for a guy hitting hitting .197 after another young, former top prospect stuggled.
And Adames and Urias have both taken off since that trade.
.298/.380/.550 .930 for Adames since the trade(and on pace for an 8.0 WAR over a full season).
And Urias has been one of our better hitters since then as well.
Which players who’ve deserved a chance haven’t gotten one in Milwaukee and gotten one elsewhere…?

Does this break a team record for number of players in a single season? I know they were close with 51 different players to suit up. If it is it’s kinda crazy to do it before the all star game.
DarkSide830
wow, went to the BBREF page for this season and man, that is a lot of players.

Hello Thomas James. I am also Thomas James!

I know this is off subject but how soon is to soon for Ethan Small? I read the article on how electric Houser is when he comes out of the pen. His numbers are off the chart and his pitches play up in shorter stints. But in order to do this they need a sixth starter. If Small can fill that role the pitching staff would be more complete and balanced. I was hoping for Ashby but they kind of messed him up putting him in the pen. He needs to go back and start, and leave him to work things out, otherwise I think it’s just to expensive to try and get another quality pitcher. Waiting for Topas return also!

I too thought it was exceedingly odd to groom Ashby for long relief after half a season as a starter, and then for his first appearance to be a start. The results were also very much bad luck for him and I knew he’d go right back down to bring up a fresh arm. I still think he will be great.
Topa will help a lot. Suter must go. And the pen is so strong we could let a very effective Richards go to take a chance on a lefty 1B.
Small is uncertain to me and hasn’t done it at the highest levels of the minors yet.
I still believe Ashby should get here first, but I’m not sure that Houser should go to the pen with Topa returning. He’s had a string of the best starts of his career recently. As good as Anderson was last night, I’d rather trade him for a reliever or another OF. Lauer has been decent and Lindblom lights out since returning from injury. When does he get to return?
