The Braves announced they’re passed reliever Jay Flaa through waivers and assigned him outright to Triple-A Gwinnett. The 29-year-old doesn’t have the requisite service time to reject an outright assignment, so he’ll remain in the organization.
Flaa is a longtime Orioles farmhand who made his big league debut with Baltimore earlier this year. The O’s waived him after one appearance, though, and the Braves claimed him in mid-May. He’s spent the majority of his Braves tenure with Gwinnett, appearing in 13 games and totaling 14 innings of relief. Flaa’s allowed seven runs (six earned) with the Stripers, striking out a stellar 22 hitters (33.3%) but issuing an alarming 10 unintentional walks (15.4%).
Over parts of two Triple-A seasons, Flaa has pitched to a 5.22 ERA with a 21.1% strikeout rate and a 12% walk percentage. He’ll serve as high minors right-handed depth for an Atlanta bullpen that has disappointed this season. The Braves now have a pair of vacancies on their 40-man roster after placing Ronald Acuña Jr. on the 60-day injured list over the weekend.
Hopefully this means a trade or two are coming. Please don’t sign Hamels.
Does it matter? Season’s over, they can have Hamels come on and eat some innings if they want to avoid starting some guy’s clock.
I agree, but they don’t need Hamels…. so signing him wouldn’t make sense unless it’s a minor league deal, then trade Morton and/or smyly and have him come up to eat innings. But honestly at that point, what innings would he be eating? We have plenty of young talent that can get us through the season if we opt to sell.
Doesn’t mean they’d actually develop, but I suppose it wouldn’t hurt.
The point is some guys who haven’t had consistent big league time would…
Signing Hamels is pointless. As we saw with Shane Greene, you can’t stick him in Triple AAA for a month and expect things to go well. Even if someone signs him on his showcase day, then goes to AAA for a month he’s not helping a team until mid/ late August at the earliest.
Plus starting pitching hasn’t really been an issue overall. Sure, it’s not some elite, consistent unit, but the offense and bullpen are much bigger holes.
Truth be told, this was a good-not-great team on Opening Day that’s been watered down to somewhere between average and below-average.
Remember AA is a genius !
He really boned the Braves with the Acuna and Albies contracts…
You can’t be serious
Every time I see this guy’s name it always feels like the writer left a couple of letters out of his last name.
It strikes me as a George Lucas creation
Exactly what I was thinking.
He should add about 20 more letter “a”s after his current two. Make it really draw out the last name.
Now pitching, Jay Flaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
He pitched a game in the majors with the Braves so he didn’t spend the whole Braves tenure with Gwinnett.
On a related note, how many players have played in 2 career games for 2 teams? In other words, does Flaa have the lowest game/team ratio in history?
Whoops, somehow read his B-Ref page as two games with Baltimore as opposed to one with each team. Thanks for the heads up!
His last name reads like someone’s about to sneeze while naming him.
And it’s pronounced “flaw”. Some people are just born into their name.
Curious if this is creating space for a move or two to come. I highly doubt it…. and I think we should be sellers anyways. But maybe something better is about to happen
Bartolo & Franco !
Sounds like they are about to do something, probably something like Adam Eaton or some other dumpster dive
Season is over. Sell Morton, Smyly, Luke Jackson, and do whatever it takes to get rid of that ridiculous contract Will Smith is on.
Morton will be a RAY by August 1st
No sense in holding on to him
I’d sell Dansby before Morton. Morton only wanted to play for two teams this off-season all we need is him to enjoy being a brave and we could get him back next year. If you trade him you risk pissing him off.
Does Dansby have any trade value? He’s ok, but…
11th in OPS for shortstops and 6th in HRs. Also led all shortstops in DWAR last year
They have space. Do something to improve the team. I hope they don’t do the “bargain bin” shopping for a “good clubhouse guy” that doesn’t perform. Need another bat in the lineup. Two outfield spots that need a upgrade.
If they could get 2 real hitters, we could have a chance, but I don’t really see them doing it
Don’t forget the “veteran presence” as one of those intangibles we always over value.
Adam Frazier and Kris Bryant COME ON DOWN! Your the next contestants on the Price is Right! It’ll cost Pache, Wilson, Contreras, and another young pitcher!!! Split them up as u may lol!
The pic for the article makes it look like Flaaaaaaaaa straight arms above his shoulder
I don’t understand the point of “going” for it. Even if they make the playoffs because no one in the East is good, they will be another first-round exit. Why build on their postseason failures? I know casuals like playoff appearances, but let it go. This team will be better off rebuilding than going for it.
Can’t say I’ve ever agreed with you due to your constant trolling but this time you are right. Maybe they can sign Mad Bum for next year lol
Ynoa will be back after the break. That’s what they are doing. This Ownership will not spend any money it’s smoke and mirrors.
Pretty Flaa for a white… “gaa”
Trade for Joey Gallo and Kris Bryant. Move Riley to left field. I’d like Kimbrel too, but he’d cost to much in prospects. Bring Alex Jackson up when he’s ready.
I don’t EVER want to see Alex Jackson catching a Braves game again. Rather have Lucroy stay and back up Travis when he is back.
Alex Jackson can be a career Striper
Trade Travis once he is back. He is at the end of his contract. Catchers are in big need.
Jackson is an above average defensive catcher. He calls great games and the pitchers love him. You really are naive enough to think any pitcher who did well in AAA in the last few years doesn’t have to do with him? Pretty crazy to ignore
I’ll bet he was Flaa-bergasted.
It’s all about adding now for next year. Trade Morton, Smiley, Luke Jackson and any other bullpen guy. Trade Swanson if possible. 18th rank SS in the MLB. This season is a wash. It’s about building for next year and starting that now.
Cut bait this season. Reds come to mind with Swanson. Not popular but you have an aging 1B who will not be a good contract on the back end this time around who likely wants to be in west coast despite what is stated to media- Freeman to Boston. … possibly include Smiley and/or Jackson. They will give up a lot … possibly pull in a 3rd team. Giants for Smith .. not impressed. Panda to anyone who will take him. Find a way to bring Kimbrel back for 2022.. I would not be upset if the pitching coach goes away.
It’s interesting that so many people are bailing on the season because of the loss of Acuna. The Braves can replace him in the aggregate.
I haven’t given up on this squad, they need quality pitching that’s where it always starts. We need Travis to contribute when he gets back and we need a bat. Trade for Duval for 2nd half? They were good in 20 because the lineup was deep, with the loss of Acuna it shortens it even more. Wish we knew what’s happening with Ozuna.
Didn’t realize J Fla played baseball when she wasn’t singing.
Bring him back Baltimore. Might as well keep the depthpen stocked and stacked.
