The Blue Jays announced they’ve designated reliever Tyler Chatwood for assignment. The move creates roster space for José Berríos, who was acquired in a deadline blockbuster from the Twins this afternoon.
Toronto can technically trade Chatwood within the next two hours, but it seems likelier he’ll be waived and then cut loose — either via release or rejection of an outright assignment. Either way, Chatwood would be entitled to the remainder of his $3MM salary.
The Jays hoped that a bullpen conversion would help Chatwood unlock some success. He’s long intrigued teams with his quality stuff, but consistency has eluded him. That was again the case in 2021, as the righty has only managed a 5.46 ERA/4.51 SIERA across 28 innings of work.

Addition by subtraction.
Taejonguy
and Stripling will take his place in the bullpen

Matz

Stripping returns to the role he had in LA. Matt is actually pitching better than last year.
andremets
Matz had an era over 9.00 last year so that’s a very low bar to hop over.
smuzqwpdmx
Matz has done well the first time through the order and has the kind of raw stuff that might make him a dominant reliever, unlike Stripling. On the other hand, there’s already a million lefties in the Blue Jays bullpen.
neo
this is the deadline transaction worth the most wins of all the moves the Jays made today

What a fall from grace after they got rid of the sticky.
Taejonguy
nah, he was toast before the sticky was taken away…
its_happening
He never reached Grace. Wake up.
smuzqwpdmx
“Grace” is an odd way of a describing a guy whose ERA has been around 5 for the past 5 seasons.
Darthyen
Strange thought Castro or Jansen would make more sense.
goalieguy41
Huh?
Darthyen
To be DFAed. Castro is injured and has not pitched that well and Jansen is a below average catcher that can’t hit. Two very obvious candidates to be DFAed. Maybe they are waiting to get Gomes before they DFA Jansen.
Dustyslambchops23
They are adding an arm so wouldn’t make sense to cut Jansen now when Chatwood deserved to lose his spot
Darthyen
Well Jansen need to go either way I think they are just waiting on a trade for a catcher be finalized. However Castro would seem like a more reasonable option to DFA as Chatwood has had his moments but Castro was just a guy..
Thought the catcher would be Gomes but apparently not as the A’s seem to have a better deal. Maybe they can get Suzuki from the Angels with Iglesias
too.
smuzqwpdmx
Jansen has options. He’s out for the rest of this year probably and should spend next year at AAA rebuilding his swing. No need to give up on him yet, he’d be a useful backup if he can get his bat working just a little again.
Darthyen
But he is a below average catcher too so why keep him? He hasn’t hit in over 2 years what makes you think he will change now?
smuzqwpdmx
Half the players in the league are below average. Backup catchers who play good defense don’t need to hit much.
Darthyen
If you took the time to read, I said he was a below average catcher, in other words a below average defender, that is a far cry from a defensive backup.
Also those backup catchers are all hitting better than Jansen. Several have got released over the last couple weeks because they could not hit above a 200 average and again that is better than Jansen.
smuzqwpdmx
If you took the time to write what you actually mean, you’d write that you mean defensively, because the rest of the universe means below average overall when they write below average catcher.
At any rate, you seem to be living in some weird parallel universe since Danny Jansen’s defensive metrics have been excellent every reason in this universe. He’s worth half a run of dWAR this year alone despite barely playing.
George Bell's purple ass
Shatkins wouldn’t DFA Jansen. Why would they get rid of what they believe is their best defensive catcher? They don’t throw any value away. Remember all the bums the have given at bats? Facecatcher etc.

yes

Chatwood. Rhymes with “not good”.

He can take Dolis with him.

Guy has great stuff but no command of it.
jdgoat
Elite on the sticky icky. Poor man was ruined when Manfred decided cheating wasn’t allowed anymore.
kellin
He was never any good.
jdgoat
He was pretty dominant for a month or two to start the season and then instantly went to crap when the rules changed.
smuzqwpdmx
He’s been dominant for 10 inning periods lots of other seasons too. Much like all the other guys with good stuff but inconsistent command.
C-Daddy
He was brilliant for the first six weeks of the season then fell off a cliff. Never seen a pitcher issue so many bases loaded walks in such a short time.
orange2001
I wouldn’t mind a reunion with Maddon and the Angels. I always liked his poise as a 21-year-old rookie. Angels’ pen is so bad, maybe with some minor adjustments he can help as a long reliever. Angels desperately need relief pitching.
nickmontgomery10
Cardinals will go for this guy

So long, Stinktown!!

Long overdue

Actually Chatwood is quite good most of the time. But when he is bad, it is a disaster.
