As many as eight clubs are in the mix for Nationals ace and three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, per Jayson Stark of The Athletic (Twitter link). The Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Red Sox, Rays, Blue Jays, Astros and Mets are all interested, according to Stark, who adds that the Yankees also inquired but were told Scherzer isn’t likely to waive his no-trade rights for a move to New York. That meshes with recent reporting from SNY’s Andy Martino, who wrote earlier this afternoon that Scherzer wouldn’t approve a trade to the Mets (nor would the Nationals be keen on dealing their ace to the current division leaders).
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported earlier in the day that Scherzer preferred a West Coast club, though MLB Network’s Jon Heyman adds that the ostensible West Coast preference is more about Scherzer wanting to go to a team with a chance to win in 2021 and beyond. Scherzer prefers to go to “a team he could stay with” on a possible extension, per Heyman. Agent Scott Boras indicated as much earlier in the summer, although at the time Boras suggested an extension might be necessary in order for Scherzer to waive his no-trade protection at all. That no longer seems to be the case, but as evidenced by Scherzer’s unwillingness to go to a New York club, the no-trade rights can help him choose his eventual landing spot.
If the Nats are to ultimately trade Scherzer, tweets Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the team’s preference is to do so within the next 48 hours. Doing so would leave ample time to sort through the no-trade obstacles and any potential compensation for waiving those rights (e.g. alterations to deferrals, taxes, etc.).
That said, a trade taking place prior to Thursday’s game would put an acquiring team in a tough spot. Scherzer was scratched from his weekend start due to a triceps issue and is set to return to the mound Thursday. A recent MRI came back clean, and any team acquiring Scherzer would obviously have access to the results from that imaging and other testing. Still, a clean MRI may not inspire as much confidence as seeing Scherzer go out and actually perform. If interested clubs prefer to wait until Scherzer has taken the mound, there’d be fewer than 24 hours between the conclusion of Thursday’s start and Friday afternoon’s deadline.
Any trade involving Scherzer is going to be financially complicated, but looking at Stark’s list of interested parties, there are a few particularly complex scenarios. The Dodgers are already into the final luxury-tax bracket, meaning they’d pay a 62.5 percent overage penalty on any additional money added to the books. For Scherzer, whose remaining luxury hit clocks in at roughly $10.03MM post-deadline and $10.49MM as of this writing, that’d mean paying between $6.27MM and $6.56MM on top of the approximately $12.2MM he’s still owed in actual 2021 salary. (Luxury tax is calculated based on a contract’s average annual value, but Scherzer’s backloaded contract comes with a $35MM salary in 2021 — albeit with much of that sum deferred.)
The Padres are reportedly just above the luxury tax threshold, but are still considering moves that could take them back under that line. A Scherzer acquisition, however, would push them well above the mark. That’s also true of the Astros and the Red Sox, who are both within just a few million of the $210MM threshold. The Rays, of course, have an entirely different sort of financial obstacles to consider (namely, their perennially cellar-level payroll). The Jays and Giants, as teams with deep pockets and no real luxury concerns of which to speak, ostensibly represent the “cleanest” fits of the bunch.
That’s not to say that the Dodgers, Padres, Astros, Rays or Red Sox shouldn’t be considered legitimate contenders for Scherzer. (Although if Scherzer is hoping to stay with the club that acquires him, the low-payroll Rays are an admittedly tough fit.) Most clubs this summer have voiced some iteration of a “we’d exceed the threshold for the ’right’ player” stance. It’s hard to imagine a player who fits that billing more than a bona fide ace and three-time Cy Young winner who has a 2.92 ERA in 49 1/3 postseason innings with the Nats since 2016. But with the Nats theoretically negotiating with a rapidly ticking clock, any complicated financial elements of a deal are magnified.

He’d be the ace for every other week (deGrom’s IL weeks). But he’d happily be a number 2 for those rare occasions when deGrom’s boo boos don’t hurt.
Note: Don’t take this seriously. I love deGrom and think his injuries are a bummer.

Love the city as well. Also players on the Mets and Yankees usually live outside the city in beautiful suburbian mansions.

Dodgers will offer up $$$$$$$$ extension and Pepiot with other prospects
Scherzer would be better off with Giants….but they would be fools to sell the farm for him
44McCovey
Agreed. It will be interesting to see if it’s going to take an organization’s top ten prospect for a potential rental. I think he is a Boras client who will probably want him to hit the market this off season before any deal is struck? He turned 37 today.
Dorothy_Mantooth
It’s going to take a top 5 organizational prospect and more to acquire Scherzer. The only way it costs less is if the acquiring team agrees to take on some of the $100M in deferred salary he is owed after 2021. I highly doubt a team would be willing to take on any of his deferrals (with the exception of his deferred 2021 salary), but if they do then it won’t cost nearly as much to acquire him. In fact, Washington could even throw in a prospect if a team is willing to take on that financial burden (not sure if they are even allowed to do this under the CBA).
ABStract
Giants have the ability to absorb a financial hit like none of the other teams in contention for Max’s services, they could take all that future salary with no problems…
Not a clever name
Like a spare catching prospect named Joey Bart?
BRUH.SF.BRUH
@Datashark “Selling the farm” is a bit extreme. The Giants have a deep system. If they agreed to an extension before the trade, I don’t think it would be crazy to give up a top prospect (not Luciano obviously) and a bit more.
Deleted_User
An extension for a potential HOF Boras client 2 months out from free agency is basically going to be market rate. Not the type of thing that boosts his trade value.
BRUH.SF.BRUH
@Remove I somewhat agree. I think the security knowing he’s not a pure rental adds some value (especially for the Giants given their available payroll) Also, they need to fill out the staff and probably will be hesitant to shell out TOR $ for Guas…
Tatsumaki
Better off with giants, now there’s a laugh. Dodgers feature the best roster top to bottom in baseball and one of the best rotations to go along with one of the best farms. Keep trying datashark you always post non-sense
Deleted_User
@BRUH.SF.BRUH Nope. Those extra years after 2021 only add to his trade value if they are at a discount. If it’s an overpay like the Mets with Lindor it actually hurts his trade value. And there is very little incentive for Scherzer to sign a team friendly extension at this point in his career.
Datashark
Tatsu-on paper sure dodgers but now SF has #1 record in baseball
add Scherzer….Giants would have a formable team for playoffs and they have a great recent history….3 WS to 1Ws dodgers have 8 titles sure…but 1-8?!

Dodgers are missing seager and bellinger for most of the year add in may and Bauer for extended periods of time. It’s not close lol dodgers have 3/4ths there squad and are 2 games back.
ABStract
You’re still in second place.
The Giants have the best future prospects as an organization and a fan base that doesn’t boo future hall of famers for having two bad outings…
You might need to check out your own support of posting “nonsense” before calling out others
BRUH.SF.BRUH
@Tatsumaki The Giants are literally missing their entire starting infield. Get over yourself. May is a beast. Belli and Bauer are way overrated. Seager can’t stay healthy. EVERY team is riddled with injuries.
dodgerfan83
Dodgers are missing just as many from their starting 9 plus 3/5 of their opening day starting pitching and are still only 2 back. They get healthy and pick up a starter and they will start to cruise past the giants
Gmen777
Dodgers have been looking up at the Giants for two months now with their fans saying the same thing the entire time. The Giants have gone 4-1 the last five games against LA missing their ENTIRE starting infield. Crawford is having a better season then every Dodger player except Muncy, Longo was/is having a great year, Belt solid as always and LaStella should at least improve the team. The Giants are just as banged up as the Dodgers right now and yet they’re still beating them.
Gmen777
Belt’s OPS is .875, Longo .892 and Crawford .909. Taylor and Betts have an OPS of .876 and Turner’s is .891. The Giants are basically getting back 3 players that hit as good as 3 of your 4 best players…Dodgers fans better pray they’re all cold when they get back.
ohyeadam
If this and that and that and that happens then team can pass whos and what’s in the standings

Hey dude. Are you ever going to answer the question of when has a player ever refused to sign with a team specifically BECAUSE they traded him?
dodgerfan83
Here’s an answer, Doug drabek refused to resign with the yanks after they traded him.
Deleted_User
Not specifically BECAUSE they traded him.
Faith in the Padres
Aroldis Chapman resigned with the Yankees after they dealt him to the cubs.
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
Clearly getting traded from a team can serve as reason to hold a grudge. Maybe not most players, but clearly it can. It is human nature. If players have refused to report to their new teams after a trade (often for good reason), then it stands to reason players have refused to later consider a team they were traded from, especially if the same owner/management structure is in place.
Deleted_User
@Remove parody Can you name even ONE documented instance of a player actually doing that? Just ONE?
And are you ever going to address you changing your name and having a full blown conversation with yourself from 3 different usernames?
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
I have no clue what you are talking about, Oswald Spengler (Egon). But I guess you must be holding a grudge against some really dangerous people. I hope you make it out alive.
To answer your question, I’ve heard multiple players say in the press they would never play for this manager again or for this CEO/owner/GM. Aside from such examples (which is irrefutable), players don’t generally talk smack in the press about why they didn’t sign with this team or consider this team. They talk about why they signed with the team they signed with.

“To answer your question, I’ve heard multiple players say in the press they would never play for this manager again or for this CEO/owner/GM.”
But have you ever heard them say they wouldn’t sign with this team specifically BECAUSE they were traded? Or has any player ever gotten traded and then his original team verifiably offered him the most money in FA but he signed elsewhere for less money? If you had even ONE example, just ONE, then we might be getting somewhere. Otherwise all you have is a bunch of players getting traded and then their original teams not even offering them a contract or offering them significantly less than the highest bidder, which indicates that the player would have left even if not traded.
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
You’ve held a grudge since 2019? Seek help. I clicked on the link. I have no clue what I am looking at.
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
I am 100% positive it has happened but you can’t essentialize it down to ONE thing. That’s what insane people do. Nuance. Grudges, previous management, hot/cold weather, bad fans, bad market, crappy field, ex-wife living in the city, gambling debts, bad restaurants, no nightlife, etc, can all play a role. It is NEVER just one thing.

None of that is relevant to the topic at hand. Why do you change your username and have conversations with yourself?

That’d make sense if the article stated he wasn’t interested in going to Tampa or Boston or wherever the Blue Jays are currently playing. Idk if they’ve returned to Toronto yet.

I think it says more about the west coast.

I disagree. Baseball is an inherently political sport just like all sports. Politics are interwoven into it. That said, not every baseball story is explicitly political in nature. You’re reading way too much into it. Politics aren’t always the first thing in people’s minds. Sometimes it’s about weather, a chance to win a title, or just geographic preference,
Besides, most cities are liberal. Even cities in red states usually vote blue. But I seriously doubt, how liberal a place is, or isn’t, carries much weight when factors like the chance for a ring, and multi-million dollar salaries are involved.
josebatflip
Okay. Just wondered. From up here in the Great White North it seems like the US is testing itself apart over divided politics so I wrongly assumed that might be in play here.

Given that the Dodgers could probably void Bauer’s contract, depending on the outcome of the MLB investigation, it would make sense for them to take on, and extend MS. They certainly have the pieces to deliver to the Nats to make it happen.
bbatardo
They can’t void his contract. Whatever suspension he gets they won’t pay him for, but they still have to honor his 2 player options or just dump him while paying him.
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
No, there is a chance they could void his contract based on behavioral issues. It would be tough to do but it will likely be the path they attempt. The man is a pariah and many of the Dodgers players do NOT want him back. I warned Dodgers fans about being excited about this clubhouse cancer. The man cannot help himself. He has no off switch.
Jean Matrac
How often have teams been able to void a contract? It doesn’t mean it’s never happened, but I can’t remembering it ever happening. I’d guess it’s either extremely difficult, or impossible.
stymeedone
Many Dodgers players not wanting him back also indicates that many Dodgers players want him back. This is not an ALL situation. Lets say a poll of the players show 20% want him gone, 20% want him back and 60 percent aren’t sure. The media can decide to publish as 80% of Dodgers player either don’t want him back or are unsure him coming back is a good idea, or they can say 80% want him back or unsure if getting rid of him is a good idea. Both would be partially true, and can be used to support whatever argument you wish to make.
Deleted_User
If the Dodgers are able to void his contract I question why the Padres didn’t void Hector Olivera’s contract back in 2016-17.
jjd002
Because it can’t be done. Unless Bauer agree to some sort of deal LA is on the hook for it all.
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
According to Dodgers Nation:
“Bauer’s contract is not publicly available, so whatever particular grounds it might provide are unknown. However, the standard player contract allows a team to terminate the deal should the player “fail, refuse or neglect to conform his personal conduct to the standards of good citizenship and good sportsmanship.”
A move like that would almost immediately come with Bauer and his co-agents filing a grievance. The Dodgers could also opt to release the embattled pitcher who is still owed more than $80 million on the 3-year, $102 million deal he inked this past February.”
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
Good question, Oswald.
ohyeadam
Good sportsmanship? Does that mean the Trashtros will finally get their due?
bobtillman
I can see John Henry telling Bloom what he told Theo about Schilling….”Do what you have to do”…..There were empty seats over the weekend in Fenway…..
KD17
Bob – I hope you are right. The Red Sox Achilles heel is Starting pitching. If Sale is sound and back to being Sale then he, Eovaldi, Houck and Pivetta are a decent set of four but I don’t trust the rest and the two youngsters need to be the 4th and 5th starters so any acquisition needs to be better than Eovaldi to make a significant impact..
Bloom is no DD so he has never made a deal for a big star like Scherzer but he did do a terrible job moving Mookie and Price the only two big names he’s ever traded or traded for. Current ownership is not the ownership of the last 20 years. Their decision making has been horrendous since firing DD. There is less of a chance of getting Scherzer or any impact player than the Red Sox making the playoffs. Not much hope for the owners doing the right thing or Bloom knowing how to beat the competition for a big name star. Again, I hope you are right but it seems highly unlikely unfortunately.
bobtillman
It’s hard to compute what the Sox FO is thinking. But selling the concern about going over the tax threshold, to a fan base that pays through its what-evers for tickets, is just an insult There WERE some empty seats this weekend…and that’s with O’Brien and Remy downright huckstering to get tickets sold. Henry et al can’t be happy looking out the window and seeing it.
Do they need Max? Who doesn’t ? Plus, pitching is their Achilles heal. Ya they could use a 1B; right now Bobby D. bats ninth, so it’s not the end of the world. And getting Rizzo back would be a great story. But it’s not pressing.
But putting Max with Sale and Nate would not only be effective, it would be fun; the Bulldog Trio. (I can’t see Alex bringing out the spreadsheets, telling them what to throw; not without getting those spreadsheets shoved somewhere he doesn’t want them). They could turn what’s been a somewhat efficient, but somewhat boring, team into an entertainment vehicle.
Will it happen? Dunno; Bloom plays it closer to the vest than DD does. Again, efficiency over entertainment. I think they’ll do SOMETHING, but Max would be magical
KD17
Bob – It’s 24 hours later and Toronto got hand and SD got Scherzer. So to review the playoff teams:
Boston – NOBODY
TB – Cruz
NY – Gallo
Tor – Hand
Hou – Graveman
Sea – Can’t tell if they are adding or subtracting!
LAA – NOBODY
Guess which 3 teams will likely be home watching the playoffs!!
Boston
LAA
SEA
With 3/8ths of the season left the margins are too small to not expect change at the top of the AL East and the Wild Card spots. I guess either ownership knows Cora is cheating like they knew in 2018 and feel strongly that he can win doing what he’s doing or they simply have gone cheap and are willing to count their profits rather than rings!!

Astros … !!!
clubber_lang84
I could see the Astros jumping on this. Maybe take Verlander back to even out the money? Plus some of Houston’s young pitching. With tonight’s bullpen addition for the Astros, Mad Max would put them as the odds out Favorite for winning the WS. They are already in the mix
Dorothy_Mantooth
Unless Houston is willing to part with their #1 or #2 prospect as part of the deal, there is zero chance of Washington taking back Verlander’s dead money as part of a Scherzer trade. Houston will just need to exceed the CBT if they want him and pay the modest penalties and prospect costs for doing so. The only way it really hurts them is if Houson signs a FA next year who turned down a qualifying offer from their previous team. If they do that after being over the CBT, they would lose their 2nd & 5th draft picks along with $1M of international free agent pool money. Given their recent draft pick penalties for the cheating scandal, I highly doubt Houston is going to try to sign any FA who was given a QO (teams under the CBT lose their 2nd pick & $500K of IFA$) so acquiring Scherzer and going over the CBT would only result in a 20% overage penalty, which would be well worth doing so in my opinion. Scherzer would really round out that Houston staff quite well, and Graveman can actually save games for him too, so he can also get some more wins added to his HOF stats.

Charlie Morton, Chris Martin, and a change of scenery candidate like Kyle Wright
Baseball 1600
If the Giants get Scherzer they can use both Wood and Webb in the bullpen in the playoffs which would make their already strong BP even better as both have experience out of the pen and are both generally plagued by the same issue of not being able to get deep into the game (3rd time through the order)
BRUH.SF.BRUH
@Baseball 1600 I like the thought, but Webb has looked like our best pitcher lately…
Gmen777
Do you think they’ll run a 3 man rotation? No way does Cueto make a playoff rotation over either of those two. Gausman = Scherzer > Disco > Wood would be my guess if for no other reason Wood is a lefty over Webb
stymeedone
No one runs a 3 man rotation even during the playoffs. Not in this pitch count era. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a scheduled bullpen day in the playoffs, with the way things are evolving.
bobtillman
Think the Pirates are in it?
gbs42
Ke’Bryan Hayes would get it done.

I doubt the Jays will part with the prospect capital to get him, but acquiring Scherzer and having him start the first game back in Toronto on Friday night would send the Blue Jays fan base into a frenzy.

They would have to add Bryan Reynolds.

He’s not going anywhere but the Dodgers. That’s 100% my opinion. They are already over the slot, the 7m it would take is like $7 and he would LOVE to go to free agency as a 3x cy young and 2x World Series winner
jjd002

Gmen777
Don’t think the Dodgers are ready for that 162 game championship yet

Reading he wants west coast but with the jays on a 3/105 extension would place him in a pretty good spot for the next 3 years and check off a major box for the Toronto. I don’t see San Fran or Oakland going in and still haven’t seen anyone “choose” the stros since well, you know
jjd002
Michael Brantley didn’t? They haven’t needed to sign anyone since the public found out about everything. Verlander decided to come to Houston when they were doing it. Your last sentence is stupid.

He’s a Padre for sure… if they pull it off. It’s over for dodgers and giants
jeffmaz
Every player wants to be a Padre. Do it, Preller.
skrockij89
Seattle not interested? Doesn’t surprise me after that terrible trade earlier today.
Matt_Angel_Bronco_Laker
C’mon, Angels! Trade Jo Adell and Griffin Canning, and offer an extension for 4 years/$110M, the fourth year being a player option. The angels need an ace in the worst way. Add more. Pay more. Whatever it takes.
Deleted_User
Pretty sure the Angels could get him in free agency if they are willing to offer that kind of dough. That way they keep Adell and Canning.
mlbnyyfan
Max can be a huge difference maker like Verlander. Why would you not do whatever it takes even for a rental. TB has won in Hockey and Football. The Baseball team needs to finally step up. The Yankees won’t be down forever now is your chance TB.
Deleted_User
@mlbnyyfan Astros didn’t trade Franco or anyone like him for Verlander. And Verlander had two more years on his contract when they traded for him.
mlbnyyfan
No guts no glory. Stop acting like a small market team. If not Franco then someone else

BTV says Max Scherzer for JJ Goss straight up is fair.
Matt_Angel_Bronco_Laker
My concern is what I read in the article about Scherzer possibly wanting an extension to wherever he goes. If he goes to the Dodgers, Giants, or Padres, the Angels are SOL.
Let’s face it, the Angels should be in on every pitcher. I saw him enjoying time with Shohei Ohtani at the All-Star game…. It’s my pipe dream. Lemme have it! Ha.
Deleted_User
@Matt_Angel_Bronco_Laker Scherzer’s agent Scott Boras already backpedaled the statement about an extension being necessary for Scherzer to waive his NTC.
And if they do extend him it will be an overpay like the Mets with Lindor so the Angels should consider it a bullet dodged.
neo
I think the Angels might be three or four HOF players away from contending, and even then they might not get the job done. But at least they can send players to the All Star game for good times. I don’t think you should expect competitive advantages from seeing guys smile, however.
You can celebrate so many things but seeing a winning team assembled may have to remain a pipe dream a long, long time.

The Astros are set to lose Verlander and Grienke so they would certainly have the money to pay Scherzer next winter. The Dodgers are sort of stuck in limbo until something happens with Bauer and his $45 million dollar salary for next season. If the Padres can move Hosmer and/or Myers that would go a long way to helping get and keep Scherzer. The Mets could do it, but would Washington want to trade him to a team they will face several more times this season and next (granted the Nationals have no controll over where Scherzer signs over the winter). The Giants have LOTS of money coming off the books next winter so i would definitely not count Farhan out
Deleted_User
I’ll ask it again. What does it matter if they can or can’t pay him next winter? They are trading for him for 2021.
Rsox
Because it clearly states his preference is to be traded to a team he can stay with beyond this season
Deleted_User
@Rsox Boras already backpedaled on that statement
Rsox
No Boras backpedaled on it being a prerequisite for him to waive his no-trade clause. Preferring to go to a team that can possibly resign him and demanding an immediate extension are not the same thing
Deleted_User
Not sure why it would matter if the team he goes to can re-sign him. One way or another he’s gonna get his money.
Geaux Astros
Giants is where I think Max will be traded.
44McCovey
The Giants have Crawford, Belt, Longoria, and La Stella coming back soon. I wonder if there are guys currently on their 40 man roster that get traded? Slater, Dubon, Dickerson, Davis? I’m not sure who has options left?
gmenfan
Slater seems like the odd man out.
jimmertee
I seriously doubt that Shapiro/Atkins are going to part with a top prospect for Scherzer. They don’t have the stones to do a deal like that even though it is what the Jays need to try to win now.
Doxie
If you close your eyes you can see how cool Max would look in Dodger Blue and I’m a Brave fan since 1959 ( no typo ) ! Would be nice to see him finish his carer in LA.
pc01
This has Astros written all over it, though I’m curious if he’d waive the no-trade clause for Houston. And yes fellow trolls, I know YOU don’t think anyone would go to the cheating Astros, but YOU don’t get to decide.
Chief Two Hands
Aww…are you going to take your ball and go home now?
moosedrool
If Max goes to the Dodgers, Friars or Sox…I will call it a poon move.
Amanda2019
Im sry but if i was a Washington fan id be PISSED, first you loose your overall best hitter a few years ago, then you find out your homegrown really talented pitcher is out for the rest of the year THEN you need to/want to trade your ‘ace’, oh, and you have had like, 4 managers in 3 seasons. this team has no stability, i mean they arent broke, just resign him, unless hes injured or just says ‘ I WANT TO BE TRADED’ he shouldnt be considered available, They just won it all a few years ago, makes really zero to no sense they arent trying to keep everybody, it was like when Houston traded garret cole, it was simply cause of money, no player should EVER be traded simply for not being on a team that cant afford them, they should be traded for better reasons, poor performance, attitude, age, NOT money.
adc6r
1st you lose your overall best hitter [after offering him a 300mm 10 year deal]
Harper has higher strikeouts and lower average than he should because he maximizes his power swing
Then you… want to trade your ace…
And infuse some much needed talent into a thin farm system while clearing payroll to extend young players just entering their prime, and signing some much needed free agents to fill needs
Gmen777
I honestly don’t see him being traded to any other team but the Giants or Dodgers. Giants have the most payroll flexibility of any other contender, a deep farm system and an extension would probably help them more than hurt them. The Dodgers have never shied away from spending money and are definitely in more of a win now mode than the Giants. The Giants can probably offer more than the Dodgers tbh (I’d think any prospect is possible except Luciano) but I don’t know if Zaidi is willing to make that move
adc6r
The Dodgers Luxury Tax situation gives the G-Men the advantage here. But I think the Padres [lesser luxury tax issues] are just as likely with the aggressiveness they have shown
CardsNation5
I’d be cautious in trading for this guy and with what I’d give him in his next contract. Yes he’s a future HOFer and is still very productive when HEALTHY. That’s right when healthy. He’s 36-37 years old and injuries have been mounting up the past few seasons. Yes he’s still a tremendous pitcher, but Father Time is undefeated. And with the torque that he puts on his body with every pitch, those Lil injuries that’s starting to keep popping up, the longer they’ll take to recover from. It’s

Having said that, he still has the ability to put one team over the top for this season as a rental

So in a second “look on the bright side” season in a row here is today’s backhanded ray of sunshine:
With the positive Covid test, Turner’s chance of being traded went down keeping the Nats first in line for a possible long term contract. Now that Ovechkin is in the fold for his career home stretch run. Scherzer remains the biggest fish in the trade market. As far as mad max is concerned I have mixed feelings. The Farm needs to be bolstered for the long term health of this team. third base needs to be addressed [look for Rizzo to go after Bryant in the off season] and injuries have left many doubts in the bullpen.
I am also thinking Carter may be more suited to second base than third but the jury is still out on that one… the kid IS just 23…
Geaux Astros
Please let this be to the Astros. I doubt it will happen, and they can make it without Max, but this rumor lines up with what has been done before.
adc6r
Where ever he goes [assuming he goes at all] it will take some serious impact prospects. I am not sire the Astros match up as well as SD and SF. The Dodgers have the depth to do it as well, but I see SF as the most likely.

He’ll be a Dodger in 48 hrs
LetGoOfMyLeg
I would be surprised if he does not land with the Red Sox. Time will tell but he and Sale would make a formidable duo
Amanda2019
god what i would give to have him in boston, even if its only for the next 3 months, can you imagine him and sale 1-2 to the world series? Granted sale had surgery and may be awful/still not 100%, etc, but just 50% of sale and max together is more than well, most of the league, then for fun lets sprinkle in them, at the world series against MOOKIE and the dodgers, who they traded. Doncha just love baseball:)
Amanda2019
But honestly if im being realistic i completely see him going to Houston, they will do exactly what they did a few seasons ago with verlander..older veteran STILL amazing free agent pitcher.
