To some, the Rays recent trade of Rich Hill to the Mets may have seemed incongruous with their plans for contention, but this is how the Rays do business: players play for the present, front office plays for the future. GM Erik Neander suggested it was simply a matter of coming up on having too many guys for the rotation, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (via Twitter). He didn’t shut down the idea of upgrading the rotation, however, suggesting they weren’t in love with Hill’s output projections for this season. For now, Luis Patino and Chris Archer will soon round out the rotation, pending another deal in the coming days. Elsewhere in the AL East…
- Red Sox southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez was removed from his start in the second inning today with what’s being reported as “migraine symptoms,” per Steve Hewitt of the Boston Herald and others (via Twitter). Rodriguez has a 5.19 ERA in 95 1/3 innings this season, though a 3.51 FIP and 21.9 percent strikeout-to-walk rate suggests his performance has been quite a bit better. He threw just 25 pitches in today’s outing.
- The Yankees were also dealt a potential blow today as Gary Sanchez was removed from the game with back spasms. The Yankees are already without backup Kyle Higashioka, who will remain on the COVID-related injured list at least until next week, per Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News (via Twitter). Rob Brantly would be the stand-in, should Sanchez need further days off.
- Orioles Rule 5 pick Tyler Wells was placed on the 10-day injured list today with right wrist tendonitis, per the team. His placement was backdated to July 20th, however, and the O’s don’t expect him to be out for longer than the minimum ten days, per The Athletic’s Dan Connolly (via Twitter).

Yanks need to sell
bobtillman
O’s are probably interested in Stanton to replace Chris Davis in the future.
mlbnyyfan
I wish Yankees would but have no one anyone wants to buy.

Yanks do need to sell but jeesh what a poor roster from the outset this year.
Mlb1971
And to think many publications picked the Yankees to win the ALCS go to the World Series for the first time in 12 years. Lol. I picked them to finish third in the division and miss the playoffs. The Yankees are always overrated. Lol

Yankees need to rebuild completely only two players to stay is cole and stanton just cause no one will pick up their contract.
brucebochyisthemarlboroman
You really think they should move LeMahieu?? They just signed him and they’d probably want a ransom for him that nobody would pony up for. I agree they need to sell but they’re not really in need of a blow it up rebuild.
Adampunk13
No but They need more agility on the field and guys that are hungry to win. They play without passion

I’ve written numerous times how Cashman blew it when he let Ronald Torreyes go. The man meant so much to the team (ex-pitcher Larry Anderson that does the Phillies games on radio says that Torreyes is this years Phillies MVP). Gleyber and Andujar were most noticeably impacted.
Was watching the recent game between the Phillies and Yankees listening to the Yankees radio feed. Gleyber was constantly joking with Torreyes and Didi, sticking his lounge out at them as he rounded the bases after hitting a HR. Suzie Waldman commented that it was the first time she’d seen Gleyber smile in quite a while, and John Sterling agreed.
I watch the Yankees play and it’s as if no one is quite sure what’s going on….including the manager. I don’t know if it’s coming from Cashman or Steinbrenner, but that team has no direction at all. Everyone seems to be looking around waiting for someone to tell them what they’re allowed to do.
thecoffinnail
Agreed. With as much talent as the Yankees have they should be contenders instead of 4 game a under .500. They need a new manager that knows how to lead instead of being a yes man for Cashman. Girardi wore his welcome out but that doesn’t mean go out and hire his exact opposite. Boone taking the team to the playoffs a few times is more a testament to the talent they have rather than his leadership. They should offer the job to Ibanez and see if he turns it down.
dimitriinla
Their talent had way too many question marks this year heading in.
When it was a game.
I never understood letting him go. Good versatile player and wouldnt hurt you if he needed to start long stretches. The team needs to step back and regroup since loading up approach isnt working.
linc_case
Not completely sold on Ibanez yet (though I believe he is a solid candidate). However in any case they do need and will get a new manager after this season is over.

Can’t wait for E-Rod’s 8.3 to come off the ledger next season, and to replace him with with Whitlock at the league minimum!
mlbnyyfan
I thought getting rid of Betts was a HUGE mistake but apparently the Red Sox kept the right person in Devers. Yankees need to learn from Boston who in the past got rid of Nomar and Mookie. Unfortunately Yankees care too much about loyalty and hang onto players too long. Yankees too stubborn or this front office too damn stupid to care.
butch779988
Cashman -Most overrated GM in the game. He sucks.
Hughass5g
Yupp— had whitlock in the farm. Protected kriske and nick nelson. Not to mention ottavino, good thing he got traded to snag justin wilson and darren o’day. The Yanks also have 27m of payroll to chapman and britton that they cant bring in on crucial games because analytics says so. So done with this clown show
yanks02026
You mean kriske and Nelson that had better minor league numbers than Whitlock.
Bob Lablah
If he’s not highly rated, how can he be over rated? Anyone can piss money away.
Mlb1971
Cashman can only win if spends $100 million more than all other MLB teams! Lol
miltpappas
Betts wanted out. A lot of people refuse to accept that but he refused to talk extension, then signed one with L.A.
luckyh
He may have stayed if they threw more money and years at him. I liked him but glad they traded him. They are in a better place without him. They are building around a core that’s solid enough. You can’t field a team of big contracts. I loved Mookie, but best for all he moved on. And they were able to get rid of Price. His attitude was awful. LA should be concerned about Mookie’s back and hip issues this year.
Rsox
A $365 million extension during a pandemic when no one knew what offseason spending would be like made it pretty easy to say “yes”. If Mookie had still been in Boston at that stage he may stayed as well.
When it was a game.
Sox do a good job of regrouping and taking a step back to take to forward. They are in good shape and the yankees need to take a page from this playbook.
KD17
Lee – You like the formula Win a ring – suck two years – possibly contend?
I liked when DD was in Boston and it was Div Champ – Div Champ – Div Champ-Injury plagued season. Ownership had the money to keep things together and chose the alternative, destroying the 2018 champs by dumping players and not replacing the talent they shed. Yes, the season is better than expected based on talent but remember a cheater is back and who knows why it’s better than expected..
DD knew how to win the Division and you can’t name another GM for Boston that you can say the same thing about. Remember, he kept HIS payroll under the CAP so the whole misconception about him spending was horse crap. They fired him because DD wanted to bring Mookie back and pay him roughly $10M more per year than his last arbitration year because ownership could afford it. It should have been a dynasty under DD but instead it’s a bunch of hollow promises under Bloom.
They are not in good shape and the Yankees should not take a page from Bloom’s flawed playbook. Cashman needs to aggressively spend like he has in the past but going forward eliminate injury prone players. When you have that much money and you are making more money than any other team despite spending more money on players than any other team it’s very simple – picked the best guys available who are healthy and have no injury history. Put DD as GM of NYY and the MLB will revert back to Yankee era dating from the 1920s to 1962 where the Yankees won half the championships. Leave Cashman in the job and it will be more of the same. Bad big contracts and an emphasis on relievers not starters. What a horrible philosophy documented by no rings yet more money spent than any other team (25% more than the closest spender!)
Rsox
As much as Whitlock could be a decent starter he’s been a lights out reliever. I know the plan is eventually to start but not sure if that is by next season or not.
I may be in the minority but i hope we keep ERod next season. Yes he’s had his struggles but with all he went through last year and basically rebuilding arm strength in the ML rotation is going to have bumps in the road
miltpappas
Can’t picture any team diving full throttle into an E-Rod contract. Two years maybe. The guy is decent but has a plethora of health issues.
Mlb1971
Milt – yes, for 1 or 2 years, if I am Bloom I resign him. Anything longer is way too risky considering his health concerns.
KD17
RS8 – Resign E-Rod? Why pay his salary demands for a #5 SP at best?
The guy started pitching at 22 and had a 3.85 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. Normally, that would be good for a #5 SP, acceptable for a #4 SP and bad for a #3 SP and that was his best season so far. Yes, in 2019 he won 19 games with great run support but his ERA was 3.81 and his WHIP was a pathetic 1.33. Again, not terrible for a #5 SP but clearly not #3 SP numbers. The numbers suggest he and Perez are fairly comparable #5 SPs. Which one is cheaper? Why not take him instead as the #5 SP in 2022?
E-ROD has LOWERED his 2021 ERA to 5.23 by the end of July!! That sucks. His WHIP continues to be atrocious at 1.35. He’s nowhere near as good as Eovaldi or Sale and both Houck and Pivetta look better than him. Why not take advantage of the two controllable SPs and find a quality #2 or #3 SP for E-ROD money but with much better numbers? There are plenty out there. E-Rod is in his sixth season with Boston and really hasn’t improved, he’s just gotten better run support so he won more games. His ERA and WHIP are very consistently bad and his career ERA is 4.18 with a 1.30 WHIP. Not the numbers ANYONE should want for a guy marketed by the Red Sox as a #2 SP. Eovaldi is their #2 and has proven that conclusively in 2021, a season where he has been healthy.
Dump E-Rod and find a quality #2 and bite the bullet one year until the Price money rolls off.
Dickiesox
He’s inconsistent but a bargain at that price, especially looking at his advanced metrics. If they can sign him at 2yrs/16-18m, they’d be stupid not to.
KD17
Dicklesox – Are you talking about E-Rod or someone else? $8M for a #5 SP is fine? But half that for a starting left fielder who never had a full season below 100 with his OPS+ is too much to ask so they trade him? I’m confused.
E-Rod’s number warrant no more than $4M per year since his comp is Perez and he deserves no more than $4M. You’ve been drinking the company Cool=Aid again!
They would be stupid to sign E-Rod. He’s injury prone and over-priced. So, so many more better options available.
E-Rod’s actual numbers show $8M to be too much. If the contrived and always inaccurate advanced metrics suggest he’s worth $8M, don’t become a GM because you trust the wrong numbers! ACTUAL NUMBERS are facts and should be chosen over contrived numbers!!! Plus his optics suggest E-Rod should have been non-tendered for 2021 and shouldn’t be touched in 2022. How much more money that was saved by giving away their best player should be wasted on crap like E-Rod? It’s like paying JBJ $11M, it’s a complete wast of money.
Performance should dictate pay not contrived stats. Over the last half decade if you take away E-Rod’s huge run support his win total drops dramatically and that’s his ONLY good stat. He gives up too many hits and walks per inning and his ERA is over 4.00!!! Those are not the numbers of a pitcher who should earn over $4M per year, especially with the consistently bad history since he joined the Red Sox. He’s at best a very mediocre pitcher so pay him a very mediocre salary.

Sad Yankees can’t admit team is a train wreck and there is no chance for them. They missed their window
alwaysgo4two
Hard to believe with the Yankees unlimited budget they are currently fielding a AAA team.
lemonlyman
They don’t have an unlimited budget though, that would be the Dodgers.
AAA team lol. They’re 4 games over .500. I love Yankees fans exaggerations. They’re either the best team ever assembled or a minor league team, no in between.
KD17
lemonlyman – Good point. The Yankees do outspend everyone and as a result everyone expects them to win like they did from the 20s to the 60s but they don’t. Their big issue is putting fans in the stands by paying big prices for players with big profiles. Cashman makes that mistake all the time. Don’t spend big bucks or long contracts on players with injury history. Cashman has done that a lot.
The Yankees haven’t had much talent for many years except on paper. The problem with paper is it doesn’t take into account injuries. Frequently injured stars include Stanton, Hicks, Ellsbury, a half dozen first basemen, Sanchez and even Judge and they all impact the standings. Their pitching has fallen victim to the same problem with Severino, more recently Kluber and so many other hopefuls that all end up on the IL.
Cashman has a flaw in his GM philosophy. He believes a half dozen excellent relievers is better than 3 or 4 excellent starters. His first smart move was getting Cole. Unfortunately, he reverted back to his old ways when he got Kluber and of course Kluber is on the IL along with their former #1 SP Severino..
The Yankees have lots of talent but if they can’t stay healthy it’s very hard to win. Add to that, they dismissed a manager who had kept them competitive during their weak years when Jeter was old and replaced him with a TV friendly good guy who can’t do the things Girardi did. Girardi did more with less talent so maybe it’s time to start at the top and find a new GM, new manager and then see if the GM has a schmuck apprentice who is GM for another club and will do him a favor and make a deal that clears some of their bloated payroll. Kind of like Friedman robbed the Red Sox of Mookie only this time some young GM takes Stanton’s contract or any of the other bloated contracts. That would be the fastest way to get back on top.
When a team is on top in a division and they weren’t supposed to be and you are the team that is now chasing them the best thing to do is get healthy, be angry and compete harder and get more quality starting pitching. The rest will take care of itself because the team in front is not likely to stay there but you’ll need to try to keep pace with the team that acquired an impact player because right now they are sitting in the driver’s seat and the team on top is about to see them fly by so fast they won’t know what hit them.
TB finally did a big market move and got the missing piece to win it all. The Red Sox don’t have that ability with Bloom so the Yankees still have a chance for the wild card spot and a Cole versus Sale match-up or a Cole versus Manaea or Cole versus Gilbert or possibly Cole versus Ryu is still a strong possibility.
Frankly, it’s hard to see the injuries stopping for the Yankees but if they do, they are in the hunt just like four or five other teams. In a week, they’ll all be chasing TB. What a great acquisition!! Clubhouse presence and the best bat on the team. Those are the types of deals that put teams over the top!!
Mlb1971
KD – “over the top”….the Yankees are over the hill….
Your serious comment usually make me laugh
KD17
RS8 – Good to see you have no shame. After your last outburst I thought you might actually think before you wrote anything stupid but apparently I was wrong!!
Over the hill?
Cole turns 31 this year
Severino is 27
Montgomery is turns 29 this year
German turns 29 next week
Schmidt is 25
and only Kluber is over the hill at 35. Starting staff is in their prime.
Chapman is 33
Britton is turning 34 this year
Green is 30
Loaisiga turns 27 this year so the bullpen is in their prime. A bit older then the starters but on the back end of their prime years.
Sanchez is turns 29 this year
Voit is 30
LeMahieu just turned 33
Torres will turn 25 this year
Urshela will turn 30 this year
Judge is 29
Hicks will be 32 this year
Frazier will turn 27 this year
Gardner and Florial will turn 38 and 24 this year.
Yep Gardner qualifies for your statement. The rest are in their prime or heading into their prime. Hardly over the hill.
Learn what phrases mean!!
The Yankees are having an off year works.
The Yankees get hurt a lot works.
The Yankees are over the hill is both inaccurate and inappropriate to say.
The season ends in September not July. Lots can still happen. I wouldn’t count out the Yankees, Rays, Blue Jays, As,Angels or Mariners. They could all finish ahead of Boston.
Jaa1968
Yankees always wanted the biggest names to come to New York no matter the cost and they get the same results , Always injured. Hal is just like George buying the name . I love watching them fail!

I hate the Yankees, but I fully expected them to come out of the gate after the all star break with something to prove. I thought Cashman would send a message that the Yankees are expected to win… and he was going to make the moves to make them feared again
I expected them to make deals for catcher Tucker Barnhardt and Pitcher Wade Miley of the Reds… 1B Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs… SS Trevor Storey, Pitcher Jon Gray and CF Raimel Tapia of the Rockies… 2B/LF Frazier of the Pirates.
SS Storey
2B LeMahieu
RF Judge
DH Stanton
1B Rizzo
3B Urshela
LF Frazier
C Barnhardt
CF Tapia
Dorothy_Mantooth
And what assets are they giving away to get all of those names? Say goodbye to your entire farm system, including Jasson.
BobGibsonFan
Prospects are for teams that want to win later… yankees need to win now.
Look at what it cost the Ray’s to get cruz… the yankees dont have a great farm, but they do have quite a bit of talent down there to deal. They could get every player I listed if they wanted.
Rsox
And where are the Yankees getting all of this prospect capital to make these deals. Miguel Andujar timeshare?
Bozrippa
Keep dreaming
billbraskey
Yanks lineup has certainly underperformed, but Cashman relied on too many unknowns for the rotation. Kluber and Taillon were not stable answers. High-risk, high-reward acquisitions that haven’t paid the dividends for a team supposedly in “win-now” mode.
yewed
Yankee starters are ranked 4th best in the American League.
whyhayzee
Erod will be fine. He’s an upper mid rotation starter who is coming off a lost season. If you look behind the numbers and at his more recent performance, he is making progress. Heck, Perez was their “ace” last year and now he’s a solid 5. That’s because Erod’s back, Eovaldi and Pivetta are available full season so far and they signed Richards. Plus, Houck will be a regular in the rotation soon and Sale’s coming back. Richards is the only real stinker and even he has some good games. Next year, I think Whitlock and Houck are in the rotation with Sale, Erod and Eovaldi. I’ll take that.
Bozrippa
No way they bring back ERod, unless its a cheap 1 year deal where he can reestablish his value. Sale, Eavoldi, Pivetta, Whitlock, Houck next year.
MafiaBass
To be fair, Perez was signed to be the #5. It was a good signing imo, just unfortunate the way the rest of the season turned out. I like Perez. He’s not an ace but he keeps you in the game. Very solid for a #5. That said, there is a rotation crunch coming in 2022.
Sale
ERod
Eovaldi
Pivetta
Perez
Whitlock
Houck
Richards
So, we know Richards won’t be back. We also know we need a sixth starter because of the injury concerns for Eovaldi and Sale. I’m guessing either ERod or Perez is the odd man out because three lefties in a rotation is a lot.
Mlb1971
E-Rod is a free agent, so a lot depends on contract demands and health.
Yankeelove
I’m a devoted fan of the Yankees but I agree with everyone assessment this team SUCKS to ME they’re are all overrated and play with no passion or even anger over their performance this is the time TO bust this team open and start over starting with Cashman and Soft ass Boone who always tries TO sugarcoat the teams performance a yes man TO his core Boone never shows any anger towards his team play on the field I’m these clowns don’t know how TO run the bases or field the ball hit right at them
Hey Cashman do us yankee fans a favor and quit you too Boone
KD17
Yankeelove – Boone proved he’s as big an idiot as a manager as Cora. Cora moves JD to 5th after a very successful 4 months with him at 3. Last time he did it in 2018 JD spiraled downward and lost out on his bid for MVP that year. Cora is trying to push Cordero for MVP but he won’t get it since they won[‘t make the playoffs.
Boone has German pitch a no-hitter into the 8th and he was dominant. One hit and the inexperienced idiot Boone pulls him and they lose another game they should have won. Boone should be fired along with Cora TODAY. Two clowns who have no business being big league managers. And for all you idiots out there that give managers credit for winning when they have enormous talent on their roster, you don’t get baseball. Cora had talent in 2018 and 2019 and won the first year and lost the second. Why? Because the manager can’t positively impact a team, he can only make costly mistakes and both Cora and Boone do it all the time. Two worst managers in baseball and they are coupled with GMs who aren’t doing their jobs.. The two premiere baseball organizations in baseball have fallen so far!!! It’s embarrassing to the fans of both cities.
KD17
Bogaerts not Cordero (sorry watching baseball in the background).
luckyh
Cora is an outstanding manager. I don’t like his cheating garbage that he has done, but no one can deny he’s superior in every way. Look at the difference between the two yesterday. Cora was getting his guys fired up, Boone waiting to lose again.
KD17
luckyh – Too much credit to managers for impacting games. Cora did what Boone did yesterday the day before yesterday. They are the two worst in baseball because their job is to not screw up things set-up by others prior to the game and to make in game decisions that don’t hurt the team’s chances of winning. Cora can’t figure out a line-up, can’t rest people properly, has no clue how to manage a bullpen and plays favorites within his own team. Boone is a good guy with no managerial skills like Cora. Similar issues including where to play players, managing his bullpen and making smart in game decisions.
Boone gets the nod from an integrity perspective over Cora. He comes from a family of ball players with excellent integrity that played the game the way it’s supposed to be played. Cora doesn’t and has proven he prefers to cut corners to win so much so he’s been caught twice so far.

the past two games were painful to watch. I love the Yankees and I’ve been a huge fans for years but I know this year we’re not going anywhere. It’s sad to say with so much talent but it’s reality
yanks2323
Fire Boone and Cashman. This patchwork to the sinking ship is not working. I have been a Yankees fan for years and I know we all get blasted as entitled fans; I am not one of these. However, they need a couple big moves to balance the lineup. Tired of seeing Stanton and when they are bad Torres and Sanchez bailing out on curveballs. I don’t have an answer but a good reset is needed.
mlbnyyfan
