The Yankees have released reliever Kyle Barraclough from his minor league contract, per an announcement from their Triple-A affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He’s now a free agent.
Barraclough signed with the Yankees in February and has spent the entire 2021 season with the RailRiders. Over 14 innings, the righty pitched to a solid 3.21 ERA and struck out a fantastic 24 of 55 batters faced (43.6%). Barraclough doled out far too many free passes, though, issuing eleven walks (20%). Those control issues made it tough for Barraclough to crack a Yankees bullpen that has been one of the game’s best this season.
Those high-strikeout, high-walk ways are nothing new for Barraclough, who pitched in the majors for the Marlins, Nationals and Giants between 2015-19. He’s punched out a lofty 29% of opponents in his big league career while 14.1%. In each of his five MLB seasons, Barraclough struck out and walked batters at a higher than average rate.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him draw interest from teams needing bullpen help now that he’s back on the market. The 31-year-old was a quality option for much of his tenure in Miami and has demonstrated he’s still more than capable of missing high-level bats this season.

He was so good with the Marlins

If he could only get a Duncan Donut endorsement.

Nice… I admit that the first time I read your post I didn’t get it, but I’m glad I gave it another shot.

Damn I was reading the headline as Wandy Peralta. It’s a typo, right?
birdsfan415
yes sir. Kyle Barraclough
YankeesBleacherCreature
Well, I await the correction to Peralta before I comment.

It’s almost like the Yankees are trying a new approach this decade. Lose at all cost… not a fun team to watch

Unfortunately, no. Wandy’s still in place to serve up gopher balls to monstrous sluggers like Tony Kemp.

…all while holding the platoon advantage.

Down a struggling lefty reliever and the Sockman
grapher0315
Would sure like to see Cards take a chance on him. Cards have got to improve their pitching.
bobtillman
They may very well. Any team that picks up Wade LeBlanc will take a chance on anyone. OTOH, I think LeBlanc threw 3 scoreless innings tonight. So why not?

I was floored last night when I heard the stat that the Cardinal bullpen has issued 16 walks this year with the bases loaded. Moments later #17 was issued to the opposing pitcher bringing Acuna Jr to the plate! Yeah, I can see STL calling Barraclough first thing this morning. That pen is a mess.
vikingbluejay67
Jays should give him a shot. Nothing to lose.
mlbnyyfan
Peralta needs to go. Call up and try Adam Warren.
YankeesBleacherCreature
I think this may be the first time we agree on something. Never liked him and I like most players.
karldanger
Why? He’s been decent as a middle reliever
YankeesBleacherCreature
It’s one of those irrational things I guess kind of like how I felt when the Yankees signed Tyler Cippard in 2017 and he bombed out. Clippard has had a pretty good career. Not sure how closely you follow the Yankees.

How does a 5.28 ERA equate to “decent”? He has the worst ERA of all the relievers on the active roster and the only negative fWAR.
YankeesBleacherCreature
It’s a small sample size even for a reliever. Part of my dislike stems from the fact that the rest of pen has been very good with a few more good ones on the mend. He won’t be on the team for long when they get back.

Decently High 5.00+ ERA…
Bring on the PSUEDOSTATS!!
Where’s Shreve and his reverse-platoon splits when you need him… Come home, Shrevey!

Agreed Viking.
Dorothy_Mantooth
There are 20 teams in MLB who could use him. Won’t be surprised to hear him sign by the end of the weekend. Not sure how choosy he can be but he might wait for an offer from a contender versus signing with the first team that offers him a major league deal.
It was generous of NY to grant him his release. I wonder if he was a goo man?
BeforeMcCourt
Generous? It’s far more likely it was a contractual requirement when an opt out was triggered…
They weren’t drinking buddies. They were his employer
Redstitch108* 2
Angels should sign him. Better that what they got.
bravesfan
I agree. He’s pitching well enough to easily pitch for some of these teams in need. I wouldn’t mind my Braves doing a minor league deal with him
whyhayzee
Stop the presses! yankees released a player that no one knew they had. OK, as you were.
Joe says...
Don’t you mean, you didn’t know they had?
whyhayzee
I’m sure there were four or five articles about him joining the yankees but I guess they got lost in my mind. Anywho, I was making fun of people who complain about all the yankee articles all the time.
Oh crap, that’s me. Sigh. Busted.
YankeesBleacherCreature
You’re contributing to the constant flux of Yankees-centric articles. If you don’t click or comment on them, maybe the MLBTR overlords will take cue and have more to say about the O’s.

But we’re the Yankees.
So we *always* matter.
Ugly team & style of play to watch & really scuffling as a ballclub lately. Yet despite all that, we remain in the thick of things.
So glad I’m a Yankee fan so every season matters, uh?
vatp46a
Giving Barraclough a chance with the big club makes way more sense than keeping Peralta in The Bronx. Peralta was of marginal value before the Yankees got him and has not even lived up to low expectations.
StudWinfield
Nothing suggests that Barraclough would be a better option than Peralta. There are several superior options available including Abreau and Nelson. Peralta only reinforces the fact that Whitlock was a monumental mistake.

Hands down one of my favorite baseball names. Perfect name for a lights out closer for a baseball movie
