The Yankees have acquired infielder Connor Cannon from the Giants to complete the April 27th trade that sent Mike Tauchman to San Francisco for Wandy Peralta and a Player To Be Named Later. The Yankees announced the completion of the deal.
Cannon was drafted in the 17th round of the 2019 draft out of UC Riverside. The 23-year-old hit .326/.399/.689 in rookie ball during his first taste of pro action after being drafted, but he has yet to appear this season. Probably a first baseman, Cannon pitched some at college, but his power at the plate is by far the greater talent.
The 6’5″, 240 pounder will be on the older side for a prospect wherever he ultimately reports this season, but he does have some promise at the plate, particularly for an American League club that might envision him as a designated hitter. FanGraphs named his as the Giants’ 40th-ranked prospect, crediting him with top-of-the-scale, 80-grade raw power but bottom-of-the-scale, 20-grade speed.
What can any of you Giants fans tell me about this guy?
Thought of him as an under the radar prospect. Showed good power, could see him as the type of guy to breakout out later in his career, as he’s already 23.
Never trade with the Yankees….
… Unless you are trading for the Crime Dog himself.
He is a massive man. 6’5″ 250lbs. Looks like he should be playing DE for the NY Giants. 1B only. No speed, no glove, average arm, but light tower power. Stantonion like exit velos. If he can make enough contact he could be a legit middle of the order, three true outcomes type player. If he doesn’t, he’ll stall out in AAA. Reminds me of Mark Trumbo. Given his limited profile, there are more doubts than certainties, but he isn’t a bad guy to take a flier on.
In other words, another Luke Voit type, but a less capable hitter for average.
sounds more like Cecil Fielder. Voit is athletic for his body type
Be stoked.
Sounds like a big, lumbering, defensively challenged, RH bat.
Because – obviously, @Joe – you can never have too many of those.
@Ducky He’s already had multiple knee surgeries so I’m inclined to agree.
Oh no!
Ugh. Can’t help but laugh at some of this stuff, man. Big Power, injury concerns, & not much else.
Maybe we do need a new GM.
Cash has been double doubling down on his TTO guys & bullpen. I’ve been willing to ride it out with him, but if we don’t start seeing some real accomplishment (at least a damn pennant) I think we may benefit from a change.
This is entirely & completely: His Team.
He did an incredible job rebuilding us on the fly (really never missed a beat) & acquiring/developing this core & roster. He has his guy in the dugout. Hal bought him an ace.
If we don’t show a tangible result when Judge, Sevy, Phat Sancho et al are through the arb (& extension) years, I think it’s safe to say he failed.
Not sure how I ended up here with this take.
But I’m good with it.
Hey Theo Epstein is available. With Joe Torre as special advisor.
You’re probably right on Ducky, but I wouldn’t get too shook about this trade. Tauchman was spare parts. He’s not exactly tearing it up in SF. Anything you get in return represents value of some degree.
He fits right in there. Seems the Yanks have a type.
No not cannon
Kid has true true power. He’s huge. He’s more of a DH but plays first. He is a RH batter with plus plus plus power and feeds off fastballs but has a blind spot in his swing. He could be a steal for the Yanks if he gets a shot as he has power to all fields especially right center.
Sounds like the rest of the Yankee lineup.
Why, Seattle loved Jay buhner
Wasn’t in SF’s top 30 though, so most likely a lotto ticket, nothing to see here type.
He’s not more highly regarded because of the canceled season. That’s the only reason.
Luke Voit 2.0
Isn’t that a fantastic return for tauchman?
Cannon is almost as big as Judge
His favorite color is blue. His favorite movie is The Terminator (the original). He is allergic to snails. He loathes long walks on the beach. His favorite food is steak (any type). He makes a killer cosmo.
Another big first baseman. The Yankees refuse to give Gittens any opportunity
He is way behind Gittens in development. At least 2 years away. No threat to Gittens.
OK I didn’t know that but they could of at least got someone left handed.
Kittens are threatening
(=^・ェ・^=))ノ彡☆
Yeah, Cashman certainly has his type, @mlbnyyfan.
But I still think he should take the best return regardless of which side of the plate he digs in on.
I know you are pining for a lefty power bat. But I don’t think we were ever going to get one for Tauchman & I’m probably more of a believer in him than most.
Also.
Good gravy did we ever need a win.
Scored 5 runs(!). & it only took 11 innings…
@mlb He’s barely made it out of rookie ball. You take chances with potential, not handedness. The kid has 80/80 raw power which is his appeal.
Anyone who finds out they’re allergic to snails deserves to be allergic to snails.
Hard to believe the Yankees went after a guy with massive power and nothing else…sound familiar?
Hard to believe people are complaining about a throw-in PTBNL for….Tauchman.
Hahaha. So true.
Let’s not lose sight of what was given up here. It wasn’t judge. It was a journeyman 30 year old outfielder.
The Yankees weren’t getting back a top prospect middle jnfielder who bats left and has power, defense and speed.
Steve Balboni comes to mind. Maybe Cashman wants a MiLB legacy. The future MiLB homerun king.
So basically, don’t get into a bar fight with the Yankees. Although two of them will wind up on the injured list as a result of the fight with unknown injuries that take months to heal.
Two Yankees injured in a bar fight? They could get two injuries ordering appetizers and another require TJ surgery after lifting a 16 oz draft.
@Darryl after cleaning my iPhone screen and making sure everything still works after spitting my Smart Water onto it, I needed to say thank you. I needed a laugh and your comment fulfilled that itch. G’Day sir
As yankee fans we can choose to laugh or cry about it.
I’m with the “laugh” choice.
Hoarding RH TTO guys who can’t run or field & come with injury concerns – indeed – leave little choice. But, as it is a new day in the season, I – once again – am ready to believe.
Hal must absolutely love fans like me, man.
“Probably a first baseman, Cannon pitched some at college”… 24.92 ERA… pretty safe bet to say he will not pitch much in MLB, unless they’re losing 13-4 to the White Sox in the 9th inning and Mercedes is up.
Chris Gittens brother
An 80 and a 20 on the same report is pretty impressive all by itself.
I think this in itself makes the Tauchman trade worth it
Another slow guy who can’t field. Yup.
Anyone complaining about a throw-in for Tauchman is detached from reality.
16 straight articles and nothing about the yankees.
Just for you complainers out there.
Seems to be about right for the return on Tauchman. Getting a one-dimensional defender for a one-dimensional hitter. Neither guy is going to offer much, except, I suppose, Cannon could mash as a future DH.
