Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina made an early exit from today’s game due to a left knee contusion. Reds shortstop Kyle Farmer sent a foul tip off of Molina’s kneecap in the top of the fourth inning, though Molina remained in the game after taking a few moments to walk the pain off. Andrew Knizner then pinch-hit for Molina in the bottom half of the inning.
It remains to be seen if Molina’s contusion is a day-to-day situation (and an injury not uncommon for a catcher), or if it’s an injury that may require more time off, or an injured-list placement. Molina already missed 11 games this season on the 10-day IL due to a tendon strain in his right foot.
Molina is hitting .277/.314/.493 over 159 plate appearances, with much of that damage coming prior to his IL visit. He hit a scorching .323/.366/.631 over his first 71 PA, and the veteran backstop has perhaps unsurprisingly cooled off after that big start.

A couple years ago it wouldn’t even be big deal. Heck I think the team might actually have been better there is a LONG list of guys that were traded away who are doing well now. But this year there is no depth at all and the injuries are piling up.

Might do better.

Wizard of Oz reference. Sorry, bad joke. But the Cardinals do seem to be melting away.

Molina is a tough hombre. He may not be out long.

I agree with all about our pitching. What is sad is that it was obvious back in spring training that our pitching was a series of question mark with no depth. Carlos is a flake who gives us one good game a month …when he can focus. Kim was a question mark who hasn’t panned out as hoped. Waino is showing his age but still giving us a good start every other outing. Gant belongs in the BP. Mikolas has been hurt ever since he got that extension. Flaherty was our only stud and then he got hurt. That was predictable with him going all out 110% every start. We have a few good arms in the BP led by Reyes but no real depth. We had what most thought was a strong lineup but they have dried up with the team BA down around 230. It looks to me like this is going to be a fight for 3rd place this year between us and the Reds and they appear to be the stronger team. At least they have some good offense.
