11:11am: The Twins announced that Buxton has been placed on the 10-day IL — he’ll obviously miss more than the 10-day minimum — and Celestino has been recalled from Triple-A St. Paul. Celestino is playing center field and batting ninth for today’s noon rematch against Cincinnati.
12:58am: Twins center fielder Byron Buxton suffered a “boxer’s fracture” — a fracture at the base of the fifth metacarpal in his left hand — when he was hit by a pitch during Monday night’s game against the Reds, manager Rocco Baldelli announced to reporters after the contest (Twitter link via Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press).
It’s a deflating injury for a Twins club that only just welcomed Buxton back from a month-long absence due to a hip flexor strain this past weekend. Buxton appeared in three games, going 4-for-10 with a home run and a double, before getting hit by a pitch in tonight’s contest. Baldelli was vague when asked about an expected recovery period for Buxton, who is batting .369/.409/.767 with 10 homers, 11 doubles and five stolen bases in just 110 plate appearances this year.
Injuries have been a frequent hindrance for Buxton in recent years, although there’s little he could’ve done about an errant Tyler Mahle fastball that ran up-and-in on his hands (video link). It’s a tough-luck injury for both Buxton and for the Twins, who have rattled off five straight wins as they hope for a season-saving push in the standings in advance of next month’s trade deadline. Clearly, a Buxton injury will do them no favors in that uphill battle.
The Twins have cycled through various options in Buxton’s absence this year, although two in-house alternatives — Jake Cave and Rob Refsnyder — are on the injured list themselves at the moment. Cave’s injury, a fracture in his back, will keep him out for the foreseeable future. Refsnyder is currently mending a hamstring strain. Longtime infield prospect Nick Gordon has been getting his feet wet in center field recently, and right fielder Max Kepler has proven capable of playing a solid center field over the years. Prospect Gilberto Celestino got a brief look as well, but he was making the jump straight from Double-A and struggled considerably in 10 games and 33 plate appearances.
Even with five straight wins under their belts, the Twins are still 10 games under .500, which makes it highly unlikely the organization would sacrifice any young talent for an immediate option to help bridge the gap in Buxton’s latest absence. An in-house patching of the problem, at least in the short term, seems the likeliest route, which likely means some combination of Kepler and Gordon for the time being. Veteran Keon Broxton is on hand in Triple-A St. Paul, but he’s batting just .169/.260/.215 with the Saints and has fanned in nearly half of his plate appearances. He’d give the Twins a competent defensive option, but his offensive woes against Triple-A pitching are rather glaring, to say the least.
It’s worth noting that while the Buxton injury will only further fuel speculation about the Twins’ trajectory at the trade deadline, they’ll at least have one more chance to control their own fate, so to speak. Once the Twins wrap up a brief two-game series against Cincinnati tomorrow, they’ll play exclusively AL Central opponents for nearly a month.
Minnesota hosts the Indians for four games this weekend before a seven-game road trip to Chicago and Kansas City. They’ll close out the first half with seven at home against the South Siders and Tigers before opening the second half with four on the road in Detroit and three more in Chicago. It’d obviously take quite a run in that stretch of divisional play — especially early on — to turn the tides in their 2021 season. But with such a lengthy slate within the AL Central on the horizon, it’s doubtful the Twins will jump the trade market, even in the wake of a potentially crushing injury.

I gave you a +1, but that was just cold, dude, cold.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Totally sucks.
I’ve seen this kid play out here a handful of times & he has always been worth the price of admission.
Gotta be really frustrating for the Twins & their fans. I’m pretty sure a couple years ago he fouled a ball off his foot when coming to the end of a rehab assignment, incurring a new injury. Reminds me of this. Gets over an injury only to have some kind of fluke injury happen.
Fantastic talent.
Kid just can’t stay on the field though.
Fever Pitch Guy
Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.
Deadguy
Dude, he just came back hit a long home run and broke his hand…. What? He almost injured himself running out a play at first. Highly talented, but when does the front office say ok and tell him your DH.
Sky14
You don’t make one of the best defenders a DH. Besides, making him a DH will not prevent taking fastballs to the hand.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Nor pulling a hammy running to first.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Yankee fans would know.
flatbip
Buxton got hurt at the plate. That’s not something moving him to DH will prevent in the future.
CubsWin108
You really can’t write this up… starts off at a mvp rate, get injured for like 40 days comes back, hits a hr, then gets hbp in the WORST POSSIBLE SPOT.
dodgersfan445
The twins just can’t catch a break
SoxRewl
I haven’t paid too close attention, but you have to start wondering if Baldelli can make good decisions as a manager too. The injuries are one thing, but it seems like he’s managing to stunt his young players’ confidence while getting very little out of a majority of his veterans.
Is there any reason why Nick Gordon shouldn’t be slotted into the lineup regularly until they figure out if his breakout is real or not? He’ll go 2-fer-5 and then get three days off.
darwin 22
Agree 100%!——I understand Baldelli has limited options to cover CF with Kepler just coming off IL with both Garlick and Refsnyder still on IL, but you’re spot on that Gordon should be given the majority of starts in CF with Buxton out. I just can’t fathom the logic of bringing Celestino back—-which just happened this morning. I don’t have anything against Celestino, but I witnessed him “in person” in early May struggles against AA pitching…….going 1-7 with 5 K’s against Springfield when he was with Wichita. He’ did NOTHING with his bat in his short time with Twins (4-32/.125 avg/ .402 OPS) to justify being recalled to play daily in CF. I realize Gordon doesn’t have any experience in CF, but in the limited time he’s played there his defense has been serviceable to good. His bat—.317 avg (13-41) with a .333 OBP/.748 OPS to go along with 5 SBs—is what this lineup needs now.
SoxRewl
It’s sad that even as a non-Twins can I can tell that Gordon would be way better in CF than Celestino!
gbs42
Apparently they can catch a break, just the wrong kind.

Buxton is injured more than stanton..
Oldschoolandthemets1980
Dont forget Judge lol
bronxbombers
Judge has actually been healthy all season *fingers crossed *
nosoupforyou

YankeesBleacherCreature
Healthy enough to stay on the field but Boone has said a few times that Judge has been dealing with a “lower body issue” all season.

Don’t forget Moustakas
Tko11
Yet when he’s injured no one makes an argument that “hE hAs ToO MUcH muSCle” and he should be doing downward dogs and warrior poses instead of lifting weights. Which is the case every time with Stanton or Judge…
Mynameisnoname
Buxton should and hopefully does work on his pliability and nutrition to prevent the promotion of soft tissue injuries.
It’s tough on his reputation when you’re chronically injured though as you have people talking about muscle pull antics when he broke a bone getting hit by a 95mph heater.
Rsox
Its unfortunate because if he could stay healthy he might be one of the best players in Baseball.

Said Byron Buxton’s mother
phantomofdb
Along with anyone who has actually watched him. He is absurdly fast and good at tracking down balls, and has been a beast at the plate lately.
When it was a game.
I’ve only seen him a few times. But if he could be healthy for 150 games yes he has amazing talent. Reminding me of Sizemore just when hitting the next level boom on DL. nick Johnson was another one.

Says the stats. His bWAR/650 over the past 5 years is 7.3. I’m not sure if anyone other than Trout is higher.
Nothing
Made of glass. Twins should move him this off-season if they have any sense. No point keeping a star player if he barely plays.
Dustyslambchops23
I would love to see how your hand reacts to a 94 mph fastball
JoeBrady
If they would trade him to the RS, I would personally drive him from Minneapolis to Boston. He’d have to meet me on the outskirts of Minny, since my insurance doesn’t cover inside Minneapolis, but I’d make the drive.
And I get that, even without the HBP, he is injury-prone. But his stats, when he plays, are 1st ballot HOF type of stats. In his last three years, in only 504 ABs, he has a .903 OPS, 33 HRs, a .282 average, 21/4 SB/CS, 88 runs, and 92 RBIs, with GG-level defense.
I don’t mind a gamble once in a while, and imo, his talent is worth gambling on.
ncaachampillini
I feel like there’s a story here about the non-Minneapolis insurance coverage.
JoeBrady
One of my wife’s friends, who lives next to Minny, refers to it as Murderapolis.
nh_55
Well, I hate to break it to you, but your wife’s friend is an ignorant fool.
cwhoswims
Did your wife’s friend hear that one once on KFAN in 1996 and think it was so clever that she just kept using it?
Ducky Buckin Fent
Here to try & set the record straight, @Brady.
My house is just over the Hennepin Avenue bridge. I’m a few minutes out of downtown.
Yes. The crime rate is up.
But – as a city – Minneapolis always has extremely low crime rates. I bounce all over the Midwest on my hunting trips. So I see a number of other comparable cities.
Bottom line: even though we are experiencing an increase in crime, this is still a very safe town. I go back East yet, occasionally. It’s not even close to the problems in NY, DC, etc.
You are still safer here than in Boston, man.
JoeBrady
Well, it is certainly the reason why I keep using it. But I did check out you claim, and it appears as though you and Ducky are correct. And I will now no longer refer to it as MU———————-
Shame-it was a heck of a nickname.

jonbluvin
He needs to go to a contender and sit out until the last two weeks of the season. That should allow him to make it through the postseason.
Tcsbaseball
So a team needs to give up prospects to get him but sit him out for 2 months not playing any baseball so that he MAY make it through the post season? Lol got it
BPG86
If he has surgery on this fracture, he isn’t playing for two months anyways. I’ve had this exact injury. 2 weeks of zero use of the hand, 4 to 6 weeks of PT and no more than 5 pounds of force/weight with the hand. Might end up with sensation issues and Post-Traumatic Arthritis.

Ala….Rich Hill style….
someoldguy
I’d doubt that.. this wasn’t a week back.. in fact it was 3 days: the 19, 20, 21 of june
someoldguy
307 Home runs… the year everything went right for the twins… this season is just a little old fashion Karma comin’ round… of course they being analytical don’t get the reality.. baseball is a game of luck and skill and often times luck ought weighs skill.. but that can’t be dissected by numbers..
gbs42
I don’t understand the anti-analytics perspective, and not just with this comment but in lots of places. “Stop trying to find better ways to win!” Huh?
No, the game isn’t just about numbers. I don’t think anyone thinks it is. But continuously trying to improve should be lauded, not frowned upon.
someoldguy
Bull carp.. they haven’t won more games… its a claim.. show me the team winning more games then they did 30 years ago… the numbers will show I am correct.. All Teams on average will win 81 games a year.. same as it has been since they went to 162 game season..
YankeesBleacherCreature
Luck outweigh skills??? Tell that to pitchers and their defense. What reality are you in?
someoldguy
apparently you don’t watch the games… the difference between a win and a loss is often an untimely error or a bad bounce or a blooped ball… Luck is a very important part of baseball.. just like it is for a hitter.. the difference between a .300 hitter and a .250 hitter… is a lucky bounce.. a bloop ball.. a flare a week… all those are luck..
JoeBrady
Over 162 games, the amount of wins you have is really closely aligned with your runs scored and allowed. You cannot predict injuries, but no one has ever said that you could.
someoldguy
are you saying runs allowed and runs scored have nothing to do with luck.. that is false to fact.. and reality
JoeBrady
1-There is some element of luck involved in every endeavor,
2-But runs scored and allowed very closely follow OPS and OPSa. No team gets materially lucky over a 162-game sample.
someoldguy
most games are decided by the Umpires calls and things like the wind.. is it blowing in is it blowing out.. is the humidity up.. is it warm or cold… all which effects pitches.. and every player differently.. there are so few scoring events.. its the vagaries that make the difference…
JoeBrady
But over 162 games, the team with the best run differential, generally wins the most games. Teams usually get around the same amount of good and bad umpire calls. Players generally don’t hit into bad luck or good luck for more than a month or two.
This reminds me of some of the poker players I use to play with. Some of them actually thought that they were always unlucky.
someoldguy
Actually umpires decide games.. because it matters who gets the benefit of the pitch… one mistake at the wrong time means a game… and it hurts teams .. for example teams that don’t hit as many home runs… they lose more games than teams that get that extra swing that has a lot of home run hitters… I’m sure you don’t believe in team chemistry, or Energy or Human dynamics… all decide games… The Numbers never got a hit .. or caught a ball or made an error or a fantastic uncalculable play.. numbers are a way of trying to quantify a reality.. and in life and baseball there are many incalculables.. and many things that change a chain of events… and with so few scoring plays … seasons are won and lost on a very minute number of events.. as for Poker..people do have streaks of the odds being against them and for them.. the difference is knowing when it is a streak.. Feel… many of the best poker players feel they flow of the events.. and use that to their advantage..
Cosmo2
Luck is involved in all aspects of the game but large sample sizes weed out the luck factor and over 162 games your generally left with a situation where talent, runs, and wins all sync up. That’s why the season is so long, so factors extraneous to talent will kind of even out.
someoldguy
never happens.. talent is never a sure thing.. .. .. because there is no sure thing in baseball.. amass all the talent you want.. the lucky teams will beat you.. a perfect example.. The 2021 twins V the 1987 twins.. and there are so many examples going thru the world series.. give me an average lucky team and I’ll beat your talent more often than not..
Ron Tingley
The guy was killing it. I didn’t even realize he was out a month with his numbers. Just when the long talk of talent was coming back.
Sky14
This injury is a bit of bad luck. Hope he recovers well, he is really starting to put his whole game together.
badco44
This guy lives on the IL, what a shame with all that talent
ExPatNYker
Hurt, hmmm when did he get traded to the Mets?

We need an all time China Doll team. I’ll start it out:
Byron Buxton
Giancarlo Stanton
Patrice Trimboli
Josh Donaldson
Stephen Strasburg
ncaachampillini
Johan Santana
Grady Sizemore
EliMorganFanClub
Corey Kluber
Aaron Hicks

Dunno if they have to be active, but Buxton is having a Grady Sizemore career.
Sizemore got paid early though. I wonder what Buxton’s impending FA value is.

Please NOT Keon Broxton! 61 K’s in 123 playe appearances at AAA. He should be released from there already.

There’s a guy who had all the potential in the world, and that seems all but gone now. If he could at least work with someone to get that staggering strikeout rate down he might still have a chance, but it doesn’t sound like that’s happening.
nentwigs
He DID make it through 3 GAMES before he got hurt again.
Under the circumstances,
GIVE HIM A HAND !!!
BPG86
I’ve had a Boxer’s Fracture; if he needs surgery involving pins, he’ll be out 6 to 8 weeks before he’s even allowed to swing a bat again. Hope for his sake that it doesn’t go that far.
LaFlamaBlanca
Still remember when baseball writers and Twins fans were saying this guy was going to be better than Mine Trout lmfao.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Trout was also drafted with the 25th pick so whatever team you root for took a pass on him.
JoeBrady
I’d be curious to see an article by any Twins’ writers saying that. The year Buxton was drafted, Trout was already ROY and 2nd in MVP voting, after being the #2 prospect in baseball. By comparison, Buxton was only the #2 pick in his year’s draft. By the time Buxton played his first season in AA, Trout was already MVP, and 2nd in MVP 3x, with an average bWAR of 9.2.
So I am going to apologize in advance if I am wrong, but I am calling BS on this one.
Gus Leggett
I think drastic times calls for drastic measures. It is time for the Twins to hire a witch doctor or voodoo priestess to come in and remove this injury curse on Buck. Both the Twins and Buxton have been through enough now. He was even starting to understand how to rein it in slightly at times now. Hopes for a speedy recovery, so he can join the Twins on their “a little too late” late season surge as they try to push (and come up short) for a playoff spot.
SodoMojo90
I can’t help but feel bad for him. This years Mitch Haniger. Hopefully he doesn’t turn into Rich “Glass Man” Harden
