The Rockies have reinstated shortstop Trevor Story from the 10-day injured list in advance of tonight’s game against the Marlins. He’s back in the starting lineup, hitting fourth in the order. Infielder Alan Trejo was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque to create active roster space. Story has been out since May 28 due to right elbow inflammation.
The Rockies are surely happy to welcome their best player back into the fold, but the bigger focus for the out-of-contention club is on Story’s impending free agency. The 28-year-old is among the top players scheduled to hit the open market in a few months. It certainly looks as if Story won’t wind up re-signing with the Rockies, making him one of the more likely players in the game to change teams this summer. MLBTR’s Steve Adams placed Story second among the league’s top trade candidates last week, only behind teammate Jon Gray.
It hasn’t been a banner season to this point for Story. He was off to just a .255/.322/.424 start before going on the IL. Regardless, there’ll be plenty of interest from contenders as the deadline approaches thanks to his strong track record. Between 2018-20, he hit an impressive .292/.355/.545 with 83 homers in 1571 plate appearances.

White Sox can start kicking the tires on this rental with 3 high impact players out.
Monkey’s Uncle
Trevor has struggled so far this year, but maybe there’s more to the Story.
StupendousYappi
He dont want to be there no more. He already has said so. If Im the Rockies I wouldnt do him no favors!
Arnold Ziffel
The rest of the story will be the return if and when he is traded. The Rockies surely can’t be so stupid as to keep him the rest of the year, can they?
dabrewcrew
I wouldn’t be surprised
hiflew
It’s only stupid if there are offers better than the qualifying draft picks they will get. I would imagine at least one offer would be better, but if not then why not keep him and take the qualifying draft picks.
flyfisher64
If Oakland is in it at the deadline, he’s a definite upgrade there
mlbnyyfan
Why would Oakland trade any prospects Story they won’t keep him.
AHH-Rox
Because he would be a big improvement over Elvis Andrus if the A’s want to have postseason success in 2021. Common for contenders to pick up a short-term rental or two.
hiflew
Because that’s how trade rentals have worked ever since trading began.
StupendousYappi
Not to be a ball buster or nothing but why bother to reactive him? The Rockies arent going nowhere anyway and he already said he will not resing with them this off season. If Im the Rockies I let him sit out and drive down his value. You want to be the big shot and speak out against us then deal with what happens. You get what you get.
Joel Peterson
Dude you been watching too much basketball…..
mlb1225
One, that’s completley unethical in the sense of the game, and extremely petty. Two, the MLB PA would throw an absolute tantrum. If a team did that, you could guarentee a strike.
Orel Saxhiser
Great strategy. Let’s tick off future employees and further tick off our paying customers. Because nothing says customer-friendly like trying to drive a human being’s value down.
WarkMohlers
“If I’m an owner I would do whatever I can to create ill will with fans while making myself the enemy of every free agent player from now until I sell the team. Even then, I shoot myself in the foot by undoubtedly lowering the value of my investment. I should never own any business ever because I’m too spiteful to have the ability to differentiate between personal and business decisions.”
I think that’s what you were trying to say.
Dorothy_Mantooth
@Yappi – That makes a lot of sense…bench the best trade asset you have just out of spite because he doesn’t want to re-sign. Story might be the Rockies’ best opportunity to add their next Todd Helton. Even though he’s a rental, there are plenty of examples of teams getting stars in return for a veteran rental player at the deadline (Baez, E-Rod, Bagwell, etc). The Rockies front office should be rooting for Story to play at an MVP level from here on out. That will only increase the number of teams interested and it will also increase the quality of the players being offered to obtain him. After the Arenado disaster, the Rockies have to get this one right and the right move is to trade him at the deadline for the best package of prospects offered.
StupendousYappi
Why hold onto him at all then? Why play him and let him get hurt like he has done already. Take the best offer and get rid of him or just let me sit at home and walk for draft picks. Very simple.
WarkMohlers
Why not trade every player on your roster that delivers any value when you are rebuilding? Baseball is still entertainment and without any marketable players, teams would be basically telling advertisers and cable networks that they need to prepare for lean times when the team is bad again. That’s asking to get terrible contracts in the future, if you can get the same amount in the first place. I know i would second guess advertising each year if I thought the team would pull a Loria Marlins every few years.
Fans won’t just show up when they know the team makes moves that scream “we don’t care at all anymore!”
amanda_hugandkiss
Name a contending team that needs a SS?
Matfactor2
Cincinnati Reds.
It would change the game for them with some A bull pen piece or two.
amanda_hugandkiss
Yeah, they could use both Gray/Story. Move Suarez back to 3B. Would take an impressive record, against a tough schedule, to convince ownership….?
solaris602
That’s been clear since ST. Reds FO chose to let the SS situation sort itself out with predictable results. The team first needs to get itself above .500 in short order. Then it would be worthwhile to make an offer.
Ji-Man Choi
Oakland and you could say NYY because Torres needs to be at 2B then could move DJ to 1B. Trade Voit (if anyone wants him) for an arm or two
amanda_hugandkiss
I guess Gray/Story to OAK is basically warm, predictive bliss
hiflew
So do you think Oakland would offer two good prospects if the Rockies took back Andrus? Kind of similar to what they did when they traded Tulo and took back Jose Reyes. Not exactly the same since Tulo was not a pending FA, but same basic plan.
Joel Peterson
Makes sense to me. The Rockies are not poor they are stupid but not poor so they can absorb money in a deal. And someone has to play short. Yeah sure.
amanda_hugandkiss
I think a lot depends on how Story comes back from the injury.
How bad could the Yankees use Gray, Story (and Blackmon)??? Probably too complicated, but this team needs a spark.
