The Reds moved infielder Mike Moustakas to the 60-day injured list today, opening up a 40-man roster spot so the team could select the contract of left-hander Josh Osich. Right-hander Ashton Goudeau was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Osich on the active roster.
Moustakas has already been out of action since May 19 due to a right heel contusion, and he had only just began a minor league rehab assignment earlier this week when he re-aggravated the injury. Now it seems as though Moustakas is essentially back at square one, and the Reds won’t have the slugger back in the lineup until after the All-Star break.
To their credit, the Reds have still been one of the better-hitting teams in baseball even without Moustakas available for much of the season, and with Moustakas off to rather an average start (.241/.337/.437) over his first 102 plate appearances. But naturally, the Reds would’ve wanted Moustakas back as soon as possible to bolster a left side of the infield that hasn’t gotten much offense from Eugenio Suarez or Kyle Farmer. Moustakas began the year as Cincinnati’s regular third baseman with Suarez at shortstop, but the Moose shifted across the diamond to play first base when Joey Votto was on the injured list.
Osich signed a minor league contract with the Reds in December. Best known for his four years in the Giants’ bullpen from 2015-18, Osich has since been a member of five different organizations, and he posted a 5.02 ERA over 86 innings with the White Sox, Red Sox, and Cubs over the last two seasons. Osich will add more left-handed depth to Cincinnati’s bullpen, and provide a fresh arm after the Reds used five pitchers in yesterday’s 8-2 loss to the Padres. Goudeau was one of those pitchers, allowing two runs on three walks and four hits over his two innings of work.

Isn’t Guilmet with the Marlins?

Guilmet is so bad he is getting sent down by other teams.

Dumb error on my part, it was indeed Goudeau optioned. The post has been corrected.

Wow… this says alot about Mooses heal. Just yesterday The Big One said maybe another two weeks. Question, of a player is put on either the 10 or 60 do they have to remain there the entire time, or can they come back early?
uncle1sock
It’s a 60 day minimum stay normally and they are off the 40 man roster. That means Moose out another month at least. I’m wondering if he needs surgery.
hiflew
He had a setback in rehab, so it just be a case of needing a longer rest.

Thanks for the response!

It’s 60 days dating back to the original injury. May 19th. Which means he can’t come back until at least July 18th.

Ahh, the Moose. Forgot about him.
Get better, Moooose!! See you in two months.
Rest the mind & body.

Key for the Reds is that it will now be almost impossible to love Moose at the trade deadline. The team, understandably, likes India at 2b and Suarez at 3B. With Votto back there’s a game of LH musical chairs if Moose is active – so to the 60 day he goes.
I hope writers do more about the new trade trend also – teams are not willing to take on salary unless they get a prospect (e.g. Angels/Giants/Cozart). To get a team to take Moose’s salary the Reds would also have to kick in a legit prospect – basically Moose plus a prospect to get AAAA type back….

I don’t see that trade happening as reds won’t part with a top 10 prospect just to try to unload him but a moose trade that could and should happen is moose for ozuna. Braves can move on and add a power bat for stretch run while reds free up spot in infield for berrero (formally known as Garcia). Then when castellanos opts out – they’ll have ozuna to fill his spot next season as he’s most likely done for this year. Doubt reds consider that much but they 100% should. Buying talent at its lowest value is what smart teams do.
DarkSide830
again, why did they give him that contract?
bot
Bc no one will sign in cincy. So they must over pay to get free agents. Moose said he’d come if they’d make him rich so reds did. Wasn’t the worst move ownership has made, not even close, but still not looking good.

You guys have no idea what you are talking about …

Excellent. Your comment is full of vast knowledge.

Players with multiple offers get paid more. Supply and demand, the lower supply (Vetern LHB 2B with power), and greater demand = bigger contracts. Any other simple concepts you’re struggling with?

Not sure I understand how a bruise on the heel puts you out for 60 days . Seems like such a minor injury. I guess he has low pain tolerance

I’m guessing it’s more than a bruise.

Poor Reds. Just as soon as they get going on a winning streak and look like they might have morphed into a decent team they fall apart, I am a die hard Reds fan and always will be but can not remember a time when I have been so frustrated. What the hell happened to Castillo change up? I mean for years it’s one of the best pitches in baseball then poof gone? What happened to Gino? One of the best third baseman going then another amazing disappearing trick, swings and misses at just about everything. We hold onto guys like Garrett and Doolittle. Aquino and Shogo never seem to get enough time to prove anything. It’s one thing to have a bad team and not to expect too much but when your team looks promising and does not produce that’s what eats at me. If we are truly a small market team then Reds ownership needs to get good draft picks and build from within or spend a considerable more cash and get a full set of good players. Not just a few good ones here and there and bargain basement retreads for the rest of the team. Sorry for venting just a loyal fan super frustrated.

I am also a diehard Reds fan they aren’t falling apart they have injuries like everybody else and they’re a 500 team in a very winnable division. Castillo and Suarez are a complete mystery to me I have no idea what is happened to them and I don’t understand why Derek Johnson can’t straighten out Castillo I have watched Suarez this year stand there and look at curveballs that are right in his wheelhouse and he doesn’t even swing I don’t know what’s going on with him. Akiyama to me is a wasted signing he can’t seem to catch up with MLB pitching to be affective enough to break into the lineup and get regular at bats they paid him $21 million for three years seems like a waste of money they could’ve put in the pitching. They need relief pitching help that’s their biggest problem if they had relief pitching they would’ve won Thursday night it would’ve been four in a row and the Weeknd might’ve went a little bit differently. Hopefully they can find some relief pitching that they can count on because most of the guys in that bullpen are terrible. Amira Garrett looks totally lost me and honestly I would send them to the minors to try to straighten out his head. Plenty of games left I haven’t given up on the season go Reds
