The Red Sox have designated right-hander Ryan Weber for assignment, manager Alex Cora told MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo and other reporters. Michael Chavis has been called up from Triple-A to take Weber’s spot on the active roster.
Weber’s contract was only just selected from Triple-A yesterday, and his lone appearance for the Sox ended up being a nightmare. Called into the game after starter Martin Perez was chased in the second inning, Weber was left to soak up innings in mop-up duty, and he allowed 11 runs over 5 2/3 innings in Boston’s 18-4 loss to the Blue Jays.
Now in his third season with the Red Sox, Weber posted a 4.73 ERA/4.66 SIERA over 83 2/3 innings in 2019-20. Weber is something of a groundball specialist, with a 52.3% grounder rate over his 163 career frames in the majors and only a 15.1% strikeout rate. He is versatile enough to work as a proper starting pitcher or as a multi-inning swingman type, though with limited effectiveness (Weber has a 5.30 career ERA).
Chavis has been shuttled back and forth a few times this season between Boston’s MLB roster and either the alternate training site or Triple-A Worcester. Chavis has hit .273/.273/.485 in 33 plate appearances this season, as the former top prospect is still trying to establish himself at the big league level. He’ll factor into Boston’s bench mix, and some playing time at first base could open up if Bobby Dalbec continues to struggle (though Dalbec has been looking a bit better over his last four games).

so this time will they actually learn their lessons?

One down, one to go (Andriese).

Joey Cora lol
Anyway good riddance to this bum. Please don’t bring him back again and may god have mercy on whatever team may claim him.
Dustyslambchops23
Jays are going to sign him to throw BP
chris redsox69
They already did that in a real game
redsoxfan719
How about editing this. Joey Cora is NOT the Red Sox manager.

Joey Cora is NOT the RED SOX Manager. ALEX CORA is the manager.

When you get outpitched by Marwin Gonzalez, you have to to see this coming.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Well, so did Martin Perez technically.

The definition of a “sacrificial lamb”. Yep, he’s a ground ball specialist: .lots of those ground balls flew over the Monster yesterday….the guy deserves another shot just for being willing to take the beating.
Monkey’s Uncle
To be fair, the balls did at least hit the ground when they finally landed…
Monkey’s Uncle
Boston repeatedly giving Weber a shot is the baseball equivalent of repeatedly running into a brick wall, then wondering why you have a headache.

I’m surprised they didn’t do this on Sunday. It was a huge mistake to bring him up. They should have recalled Tanner Houck instead since he is already on the 40 man roster (I believe he is healthy again). If he’s not, they should have given Steven Gonsalves or Daniel Gossett a chance. Both of these guys have outperformed Weber at AAA. Gossett also has years of MLB experience with Oakland. While Boston wasn’t going to beat Toronto after Perez got shelled anyways, it would have been nice to see how either of these guys did versus someone (in Weber) who has repeatedly failed at the major league level. It really made no sense to bring him up at all. Once Weber clears waivers, they should just release him. He offers no value to this team or to AAA Worcester either. Let one of the kids get a shot a pitching in AAA. This really should be the end to Weber’s baseball career. I wish him luck in his future endeavors; seems like a nice guy.

Houck isn’t ready yet. He’ll be up when he is stretched out and one of the starters has consistent bad starts (more than 3).
Weber was brought up to fill in for mop up games, not to be a star. The pitchers you mentioned have very distinctive programs and they are not ready neither.

Should have kept Brennan. There is no possible way he could have pitched worse than Weber
PapiElf
I’ve heard a lot of Red Sox fans hate on him for his performance yesterday but he saved their bullpen. When your starter goes 1 1/3, the bullpen usually ends up being dead for 3-4 days. The Red Sox only had to use Weber and two position players in a game that was over after the second inning
JoeBrady
Much ado about nothing. They needed an arm for emergency purposes. And we immediately had an emergency. He’s actually much the same as Brennan, just some cannon fodder to support a failing starter.
And, if we have one more 1 inning outing from our SP, we will find one more RP to absorb 5 innings.

The bigger problem from yesterday was Martin Perez….

More like a ground beef specialist. Another meatball, coming right up!
JayKay
I legitimately am hoping that the Orioles claim him. I like his wind-up, though I guess the Blue Jays did too….
Pls don’t bully me for this
JoeBrady
That depends. ‘Wind up’ like in pitching, or ‘darn, that ball is going to wind up in the Charles River’?
kingbum
Next man up, when Marwin Gonzalez out pitches you you should be fired
Sideline Redwine
Well, now y’all have Yacksel Rios. You should be happy.

It’s pretty crazy that him and Austin Brice lasted as long as they did. Looking forward to putting the Ryan Weber era behind us, as I’m sure most Sox fans are.

Geez. What a disaster…

1 appears, 13 hits, 11 runs, 4 HR given up. Lol yup… that’s a bad day at the ole ballpark

Our pitching has gone downhill….. Weber doesn’t belong here…
