The latest minor moves from around the league:
- The Red Sox announced that right-hander Brandon Brennan has cleared outright waivers and been assigned to Triple-A Worcester. Evidently, he’s accepted the assignment, as Brennan is listed on Worcester’s active roster. Boston designated him for assignment last weekend after he made one MLB appearance, tossing three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He has a 2.16 ERA in 8 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level this year, with eleven strikeouts and five walks.
- The Yankees announced they’ve activated outfielder Ryan LaMarre from the injured list and passed him through outright waivers. New York selected LaMarre, whom they signed to a minor league deal over the winter, to the roster when Aaron Hicks went down in mid-May. The 32-year-old LaMarre went down with an injury himself just three days later and went on the IL. He’s been outrighted before in his career, so he has the right to reject a minor league assignment in favor of free agency.

Surprised Brennan cleared as from what I saw, he can at least help at then end of the roster. I’m expecting he’ll be back soon when an injury opens up another 40 man spot.

Agreed on cleared, then he’s pretty much just an emergency guy on a roster is my 2c at the MLB level for most teams. better to have him clear than Weber, good riddance there, tho it might leave the AAA rotation thin. All he was good for.
Nice to see the story Houck is projected to start Thursday. been awhile since he got hurt, that’ll help keep the Weber types off the roster for awhile once Houck gets back to normal.

We’ve been lucky so far. The RS rotation is not one for durability, but I don’t think we’ve missed a start. I’ll feel better when we have a competent #6 in AAA waiting for a promotion.

Agreed.

Yes, Weber was taken by Milwaukee.
The emergency bullpen pitchers are expendable, so Bloom can run as many through Boston as needed then DFA them.
Weber’s 5+ innings saved the bullpen in a game the Red Sox were not going to win, so he had tremendous value (just not in a way most fans can appreciate). I am sure he got lots of “thank you”s from his teammates.

Let’s not make Weber out to be another Eovaldi with what he did in one appearance. I can’t even recall it. The bottom line is who do you think can help the team win a pennant in 21, Brennan or Weber? I haven’t seen enough of Brennan but with what I’ve seen from Weber, he’s fine for a losing club, not one with playoff aspirations which Boston suddenly has for 21.
blwite
Would Weber or Brennan be on a post season roster? Hopefully not but they certainly do have value on a winning team who has playoff aspirations from April thru early September.
Weber did his job eating up the innings and saving the bullpen the other day. He didn’t make it thru waivers to be sent back down. Fine, Wish him well on his next stop. Nobody is saying it’s a huge loss for the team. But if you don’t think every team in the league needs pitchers like Weber and Brennan at some point during the season your crazy.
Mlb1971
Weber made one appearance, and was going to get a DFA the next day just like Brennan did. Some of you act like he was named to the rotation for the rest of the year. He was called up to save the bullpen in case the starter got knocked out (which did happen). The RS did not care how he did (why they left him in) and then had position players pitch. The new kid Rios will get a DFA as soon as the RS need a fresh arm. That’s how it works…and blwite is correct….Weber’s horrible performance had massive value in saving a bullpen that has been overworked all season.

Not disagreeing. My original comment was only a comparison of the two.
As for how the 26th man is being used, I don’t think it was the league’s intent when an extra player was allowed. it’s not fair to the involved players and it should be addressed.

I never liked Weber way too overrated.. I think Houck will be a big part of the Sox future rotation.. I hope as soon as the end of this season.. The latest I hope is by the start of next season.. If he stays healthy I really think Tanner will be a future Ace alongside Sale.. They’ll be the Sox 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation for year’s to come…
Mlb1971
The Red Sox have called up:
Workman
Brewer
Brennan
Weber
The last three were DFAs. The point is none are prospects. They are only in the mlb to throw depth innings and if they do not clear waivers the Sox grab another future DFA like Rios. Yes there is value, and no none are huge losses. It is how the roster churns in the mlb. For the players it’s a job…
I am surprised Workman has gotten a DFA yet!

I would like to see Chaim Bloom obtain the services of OF Starling Marte (Marlins), P Richard Rodriguez (Pirates) and P Devin Williams (Brewers) for the second half push. Marte in CF would eliminate the need to use sub-.200 hitters out there. Rodriguez and Williams would add real muscle to the RedSox bullpen when they need it most. So……. get it done Bloom. I don’t care how but get it done.
deweybelongsinthehall
If you believe Duran will be ready, why Marte? In short, Bloom will not mortgage the future like DD would have.
KD17
Dewey – We all agree that Bloom isn’t as smart as DD and doesn’t plan on winning rings so I agree he wouldn’t do the moves hawkny11 suggested but I love the suggestions because they solve several issues prior to getting back the whole team for 2022 when they can really compete.
Needs areas were nicely covered by hawkny11. A CF who can move to second base in 2022 when Duran is ready yet hits better than all but the top four players on the team is an outstanding add right now. Rodriguez solves the long term closer problem and Williams and Ottavino as set-up men would be awesome. Williams might end up the closer in a few years and is priced nicely. The Red Sox could move their over-rated minor league players like Downs and Wong plus they have exceptional depth at the corners so Chavis or Potts is expendable.
Too many people don’t understand the purpose of the farm system. It’s not about the ranking, it’s about what the parts can do for the MLB team. Whether it’s through graduation or trades, the minor league raw material needs to contribute to the final MLB product. DD understood that and was very successful knowing how to use the minors without removing the key components but rather having them graduate to the MLB team. Bloom doesn’t get it. He’s new generation stupid. He thinks a farm system is to brag about not spare parts to make the MLB team better. TB can continue to brag about their minors but until they win a ring, who cares? It’s like a shiny buckle on a belt that can’t keep your pants up!!
deweybelongsinthehall
Sorry for the late response. You’re right with minor league talent but some gets kept and DD did a great job choosing who not to trade (i.e., Devers). However where DD failed in many cases was identifying the wrong players coming back or giving up too many chips (the Shaw trade for example).
KD17
Dewey – DD did the Shaw deal to help the bullpen (an area he was often criticized for) and the guy he picked got hurt badly. I think your judgment is harsh because ANYONE can get hurt. When the Cubs got Darvish he got hurt and didn’t pitch well. Was he a bad pitcher? Were the Cubs stupid for trading for him? No. Just unlucky. DD had a couple of bad breaks and he had a couple of lucky breaks. Pearce was pure luck and Shaw was bad luck. They tend to even out. Sale was a great trade.
The other thing you have to consider is the Red Sox infrastructure before DD arrived. There were a lot of bad pitching coaches in place and the best pitching guy in the program was Farrell. His style didn’t suit a group of Latin players and he got ousted and the bi-lingual cheating idiot was hired. That change alone destroyed the Red Sox MLB pitching because Farrell knew what he was doing and Cora was clueless and counted on people who had already proven they were no good at developing pitching within the Red Sox organization.
Bloom’s best move after Pivetta was his upgrades to the coaching staff for pitchers. It made a difference immediately but for 3 years now the manager has had no idea how to handle a pitching staff. They need a manager who has a better feel for managing a pitching staff and who doesn’t find cheating the easy answer to winning.
I’m really fired up about the guys DD didn’t trade because they are the heart and soul of the future Boston Red Sox. If Bloom and Cora go away it will be great fun to watch this team build itself back up to being a perennial contender but that only happens when the purse strings loosen up.
Wander Franco has been a breathe of fresh air to me. I’m not a TB fan but he’s the type of exciting player that I hope Duran will be. Without Mookie, the Red Sox don’t have that home grown star that everyone can relate to and support. Devers is too self focused, self centered and lacks all around talent. He’s similar to JD except JD is more of a team guy who adds nothing on defense. Bogey is fun to watch but not inspirational like Mookie. I’m hoping Duran will be that next guy.
Mlb1971
KD – wrong as usual.
If the Red Sox make the playoffs in a rebuilding year, you will need new bs excuses why Bloom is a bad GM. Lol. Lol. Lol. Lol
DD was not smart….he just had a BIG checkbook, and any GM can over spend. I am glad the Red Sox won in 2018, but that does NOT make DD a great GM!
KD17
RS8 – That’s why you aren’t a GM. You don’t get it. That’s also why you support the new clown in town, Bloom.
First, this isn’t a rebuild it’s a retool according to the ownership. Next, if you think they are making the playoffs, you’ve already consumed the Kool-Aid and you are doomed. No playoffs under Bloom!! Copyright the phrase and make t-shirts!!
Bloom will be long gone by the next time they make the playoffs. The really scary part is when a team plays as far over their heads as Boston is this year it leads to a down year the subsequent year like in 2019. So you better pray for a playoff spot this year because if Bloom doesn’t get it and they rebound like most teams and have a disastrous follow-up 2022 after playing over their heads in 2021 ownership will have all the proof they need to fire him and all that I have said since Bloom traded Mookie will have come true. He took the job so he could get a job that fit him in his next career move. Boston is his stepping stone to a small market team that behaves more like TB. No impact players just shuffling the trash in the minors.
AL34
An the Red Sox release or send Garrett Richards down to the minors already. He is awful and put the game out of reach in the first inning. He is killing the bullpen and to think they could have had Rich Hill instead. Great move by Bloom on that one.
