11:53AM: While an official recovery timeline won’t be known until after the surgery, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman (via Twitter) estimates that Soroka will be out for a full year, until July 2022.
11:11AM: Braves right-hander Mike Soroka will undergo surgery to fix a torn Achilles tendon, the team announced (Twitter links). This will be the second season-ending Achilles procedure in as many years for Soroka, as according to the Braves’ announcement, he suffered “a complete re-tear of the tendon” while walking to the team’s clubhouse on Thursday.
It is another brutal turn of events for Soroka, who already underwent exploratory surgery on his Achilles back in May. Atlanta manager Brian Snitker initially thought Soroka would be done for the season after that surgery, though more recent reports had the team hopeful that the righty could return to action some time in August.
The 23-year-old Soroka was a breakout star of the 2019 season, posting a 2.68 ERA, 20.3% strikeout rate, and 51.2% grounder rate over 174 2/3 innings en route to finishing second in NL Rookie Of The Year voting and sixth in NL Cy Young Award voting. Just when it seemed as though Soroka had established himself as one of baseball’s top young arms, however, he tore his Achilles while covering first base on a fielding play during a game on August 3, 2020, ending his season after just three starts.
Between some shoulder inflammation and the May surgery, Soroka hasn’t pitched since that fateful August 3 game, and in the wake of these repeated major Achilles injuries, it is fair to wonder just when he might able to get back to action. A return by Opening Day 2022 doesn’t seem likely, as an increased amount of rehab and recovery will undoubtedly be required after this second surgery.
Soroka is under team control through the 2024 season, as he still has three years of arbitration eligibility remaining due to earning Super Two status. Despite tossing only 13 2/3 innings in 2020, Soroka still won an arbitration case with the Braves this past offseason, earning him a $2.8MM salary for 2021 in his first time through the arb process. He’ll be projected to earn that same salary for 2022, so there isn’t much of a chance Atlanta would non-tender Soroka given the low price tag and his big upside if he is able to stay healthy.
In the shorter term, the Braves now know they won’t be getting Soroka back as a late-season rotation boost. Charlie Morton, Ian Anderson, and Drew Smyly comprise Atlanta’s current top three, with Max Fried expected to return this week from a blister. Huascar Ynoa (broken hand) and Tucker Davidson (forearm inflammation) are both on the 60-day IL and won’t be back until August, while the likes of Kyle Wright, Bryse Wilson, and Kyle Muller haven’t distinguished themselves in starting roles. It’s safe to assume Atlanta was looking for starting pitching help even prior to today’s news about Soroka, though with a 36-39 record, the Braves will have to start stringing together some wins over the next month to ensure that they’ll be buyers whatsoever at the trade deadline.

I’m afraid his career is going to be over just as it got started.
BrittinghamSports
OMG. This is terrible. I heard that he had to have the stitches removed because his body rejectd them. I had no clue he had another tear. My guess is that this means 2022 is out of the question now. At least most of it. The Braves would be smart to just bench him until 2023 and hope he gets better. The other bad thing is this year was Soroka’s 1st year of arbitration. Now, assuming he misses next year, he won’t play until his 3rd year of arbitration. That mean Soroka will only be able to ply for the Braves for 1 or maybe 2 years.
JOHNSmith2778
Depending how his rehab is going with this procedure the Braves will look to extend him after next year.
48-team MLB
Soroka has tons of talent but there’s no reason to extend him for any significant money. It would have to be a very cheap deal. I hate to say it but I believe his career is basically over at this point.

Exactly, end of next season they’ll know if he is going to recover or not and they can get a cheap extension for an additional 1-3 years. Someone coming off of 3 Achilles surgeries isn’t expensive.

I remember telling people the Braves should have traded this guy to the Marlins for JT Realmuto when they had the chance. He was already having shoulder problems at that point at such a young age and I was worried he would become one of those super talented but constantly injury prone players. When he tore his achilles the first time I told people it was going to be way worse than they thought. Hardly any pitcher comes back from that injury and stays as good as they were before. The best example was Adam Wainwright but even he wasn’t really close to the pitcher he was before the surgery. Everyone said “Soroka is so much younger than Wainwright. He will be fine.” Then Soroka started having more shoulder problems while he was on the IL for the 1st surgery. Now this again. Soroka seems like he is constantly going to be injury prone. Whenever he finally is healthy it seems likely he won’t be the same caliber pitcher he was before. At this rate the Braves will be lucky to have Soroka under contract long enough for him to have one good season to help set him up for a decent free agent contract. Then Soroka will be gone and whichever team signs him could very well end up dealing with him having a ton of injuries for them as well.
getrealgone2
Gotta say that first sentence is on point.
BrittinghamSports
Unless the Braves go on a tear and start stacking up wins they should be sellers at the deadline. with so many injuries and uncertainty surrounding Ozuna they need to focus on 2022 and try to trade away their short term contracts for whatever they can get. None of the Braves pending free agents are really considered good choices for a qualifying offer so letting them walk won’t help the team in the future. Obviously they should try to do whatever they can to dump Ozuna and the remaining $53+ million they owe him over the next 3 seasons but that contract is virtually impossible to trade at this point. Outside of him there are a lot of pending free agents they should trade and get what they can for. They have:
Charlie Morton- $15 million AAV
Drew Smyly- $11 million AAV
Ender Inciarte- $10 million
Travis d’Arnaud- $8 million AAV
Chris Martin- $7 million AAV
Josh Tomlin- $1.25 million AAV
Shane Greene- $1.1 million AAV
Will Smith- $14 million AAV through 2022
Getting rid of any of those contracts and getting something in return would help the Braves next season both financially and in terms of next years roster because only Ozuna and Smith are even under contract after this season and both those guys are probably overpaid. They could also try and trade away some of the lesser known guys on minor league deals who are helping the team right now. Guillmere Heredia, Ehire Adrianza, Abraham Almonte. Kevan Smith and Pablo Sandoval might hold some interest from other teams and they could all be gone after this season as well. Pitching usually commands a decent trade return at the trade deadline so it would be a wasted opportunity to hold on to guys like Morton, Smyly and Martin. Those guys are all pitching well enough that some teams have to want them for the playoff push and it would save the Braves several million dollars to trade them. Even if they trade all the guys I mentioned it would barely affect the teams roster next year and the core of Ronald Acuna, Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley, Dansby Swanson, Max Fried, and Ian Anderson will still be there in addition to Freddie Freeman if they are able to extend him. Maybe they should even trade Freeman for the remainder of this season and then just re-sign him in the offseason. He would be sure to bring the Braves back some good prospect capital and they would only have to lose a couple months of his services to do it. I think Freeman probably stays a Brave for life though.
RunDMC
Please also trade Swanson (FA after 2022). So tired of seeing him kick dirt in style. There’s about to be a historic SS class available with ATL having little on the books – in need of mid-order bats – and some vet presence needed with Freeman possibly gone and Ozuna’s penchant for neon accessories coming in handy with a form-fitting orange jumpsuit in his future.
SoCalBrave
What a horrible and uninformed take.
TomahawkChop
Freeman has 10-5 rights and there’s 0% chance he’d accept a trade. Once Ozuna goes on the suspended list, they don’t have to pay him a dime until he’s off of it and chances are it’ll be the remainder of the contract. This team will look much different next yr. I’d say Martin, Newcomb, Webb, Tomlin, and Dayton will all be gone. Smyly and Morton are gone. Camargo, Panda, Inciarte, and dArnaud are gone. After re-signing Freddie, they’re still gonna have a lot of work to do. It’s possible they’ve already missed their championship window unless Liberty Media let’s them spend some big money.
1984wasntamanual
I’m not sure Freeman brings back as much as you think. He’s on pace to be worth roughly his contract value this year. If he gets hot over the next couple weeks he might be a more attractive target, but right now he’s a 125 wRC+ and I believe he’s getting paid $22m this year, that’s probably not a super valuable player.
TomahawkChop
There’s no need to trade Swanson. He’s a good player and fits in well on this team. The available money needs to go towards Freeman, who isn’t going anywhere, and fixing the bullpen and rotation.
RunDMC
I don’t disagree with you, but how much annually is “big money”?
FredMcGriff for the HOF
Freeman has 10-5 rights. I doubt he okays any deal unless it a World Series contender. They probably should just keep him and try their best to extend him. Without his bat in the lineup this isn’t even a playoffs contending team. I do agree the Braves should be sellers at the deadline. Smyly at least has some value again with Morton/Martin/Smith.
RunDMC
I get the whole 10-5 rights thing, but IF Freeman doesn’t intend on re-signing in ATL, doubts their chances in 2021 of competing for one, and obviously cares for the long-term success of the club that matured him, I could see Freeman okaying a deal to a preferred contender (on the west coast: SF?, LAD?) which could restock ATL’s farm (AA knows a lot about since he was with LAD), but definitely more than the compensatory pick he’d collect if bolting at the end of the season. It be tough to see him elsewhere, but watching his body language in the dugout — he’s different this year. I wouldn’t doubt him seeing this opportunity to go ahead and rip the band-aid off, while setting his former team up for success in the best possible way.
WouldSettleForWildcard
Unfortunately, we’re getting a look at what a team with an Acuna, Albies, Riley, Swanson, Fried, Anderson, and Freeman core looks like this year and so far it looks like a .500 team without enough quality pitching. I’m not sure dumping your list of current contracts brings back any meaningful prospects that brighten the 2022 outlook, so I’d just as soon the Braves unload some farm assets to try to upgrade the current staff and see if we can get lucky and catch the Mets and the Nats.
RunDMC
@TomahawkChop – agreed, Swanson fits in well with the team, hometown boy, looks the part, but what does he do particularly well? He’s average defensively at one of the most important positions on the field, making some spectacular plays interspersed with not making routine plays. And after a decent 108 OPS+ (2020), he’s back at his career marks of ~88 OPS+, which would mean he’s below average offensively, even being on pace for career-high in HRs mainly because he’s on pace for a career-high in strikeouts, while career-low in OBP (.283 OPS currently). We’re coming to the point that they need to either commit and put a ring on it (since he’s a FA after 2022) OR upgrade with one of the best SS free agent classes ever.
48-team MLB
There’s no point in trading Greene or Tomlin. They won’t bring back a significant return and their cheap contracts are not even close to Atlanta’s biggest problem.
cgallant
I’ll take Freddy on the Sox for the remainder of the year. Then you can sign him back for the rest of his career.
J.H.
Not to mention trading Freeman midseason removes the qualifying offer, helping out his free agent chances as well. Not saying I think him being traded is realistic, but it’s an interesting thought.
BravesNutter01
Indeed, exactly. Your SS is supposed to be the best athlete on the field. Dansby isn’t even the third or fourth best player, not to mention being a defensive liability. But I wouldn’t trade him, his bat is too valuable. The better move is to move Dansby to the outfield.
MetsFan22

As much as I would hate to see us give up the chase this early, I think you’re probably right. We’re not only 5 games back from the Mets, but WASH and PHI are right there with us and playing better than we are. The Wild Card is out of reach. This Mets series will tell us what we need to know. It wouldn’t feel like a wasted year if they give Muller, Wilson, Touki, Arcia, Camargo, and Waters some run.
48-team MLB
Touki and Camargo? That’s definitely a wasted year…and I’ve seen enough of Wilson as well.
BrittinghamSports
From what I know the only MLB pitcher to ever continue to have a VERY successful career after 1 achilles tear is Adam Wainwright. Wainwright still wasn’t nearly as good as he was before the injury. I have never heard of a pitcher fully tearing their achilles twice and coming back to be a dominant starting pitcher. Not even once. At the very least this is unprecedented/uncharted territory. The odds can’t possibly be better than 50/50 that Soroka will return to form because no one under these conditions ever has. It doesn’t matter if “Soroka’s only 23!” At 23 years old Soroka can’t even walk down the street without completely tearing his tendon. There is no reason to believe he can do a good job and make it through the rigors of pitching a major league baseball game when he is even older.
Dustyslambchops23
How many pitchers have torn their Achilles?
brucebochyisthemarlboroman
Charlie Morton comes to mind….

Not sure I’d jump to this conclusion yet. He’s still young.

If it were any other injury I’d be more positive but 2 Achilles tears in less than a yr is a huge red flag.

Just assuming a guy will be back after 2 major surgeries because he’s young seems a little naïve. They can take a wait and see approach with him for sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve already seen the best performance he’ll have.

It happened to Wainright when Waino was 10 years older. There’s no guarantee Soroka will return, but his odds aren’t impossible or even improbable.

Off topic but just curious about how long were you out of work with your broken foot. My mom broke her ankle when she was at work slipped on cooking oil at the casino she works at. Foot could be different than an ankle.

Hes hardly done. Only 23 years old now. Plenty of time to still have a great career.
hiflew
He is not going to have a great athletic career if he cannot walk to the clubhouse without tearing a tendon. Guy was good, and he might have some sort of token comeback, like Matt Harvey, but a great career is probably out the door.
bucketbrew35
He might only be 23 but he also has a key decision to make. It reminds me of a story actually.
My best friend’s brother was playing for Pittsburgh’s single A affiliate when he shredded his ankle tendon coming off the mound for a grounder. He was 24 and needed replacement surgery via cadaver. The doctor told him he could keep playing but also ran a high risk of not being able to walk right again is he reinjured it. He chose walking over baseball.
The reason I bring up this story is because this feels REALLY similar. First surgery, sure. Second, I’m not so sure. Considering how much a pitcher uses their legs during a game, the prospect is incredibly scary that he could injure it again. That combined with the fact that it didn’t seem to heal right the first time and it makes a comeback all the more unlikely to me. I hope I’m wrong but I also don’t want Mike to have a life long disability either.
elgrandeuno
What’s the name of that baseball player you are talking about?

He was also 24 still in A ball….sorry to say but he didn’t have a shot at a career in the big leagues.

Heartbreaking, he’s so fun to watch. It blow my mind how a young athletic guy can completely re-tear an Achilles by walking. Just wow
SonnySteele
Sometimes it doesn’t take much to trigger an injury. In 1994 I bought a used 1990 Ford Festiva. I got in and shut the door one day and heard a loud noise. I turned around and saw that the back window had shattered. My guess is that it was stressed at some point and just waiting for the right vibration to shatter. I wonder if something similar happened to Soroka.
bigshoots
Good call everyone, he’s 23, so his career is DEFINITELY over.
hiflew
It’s probably not over. But I’d wager the “great” portion of his career is over. He’s probably on the Matt Harvey road now.
Cosmo2
Harvey had TOS, a notorious career killer. I dunno how an achilles heals but I hope it’s not as bad as what Harvey had.
SheaGoodbye
It’s weird why people feel like they have to say so and so’s career is over. I understand saying it may be in doubt or that things don’t look good, but to be so definitive is just silly. And wrong.

RunDMC
What a gut punch! This is where AA’s front office silence really take a toll. Sure, things evolve and I’m all for “hoping for the best”, but Snitker essentially said this a few weeks ago – presumably got slapped on the wrist (based on what he said after the fact), with the front office trying to save face — and now it’s even worse he said — with him out until July of 2022.
They really poop’d the bed on this one.
SoCalBrave
What you just said makes no sense. How did Snitker know that he reinjured this Thursday, 2 weeks ago?
RunDMC
He didn’t know he reinjured it, but he did state the timeline was next year, while the front office kept insisting on August being a possibility. Then we find out the sutures didn’t take, then an Achilles tear. I’m saying Snitker was a lot more logical in the timeline then a Braves front office that continued to bait fans with unreal expectations based on Soroka’s recovery. That would have been a good time for one of AA’s patented ambiguous statements.
Dustyslambchops23
What are you talking about? What does any of the communication around this injury matter? How exactly did they poopoo this one? You’re making up an issue that doesn’t exist.
He got hurt, and now the injury is clear and timeline will be TBD. None of the front office or manager speculation or public comment would change the situation whatsoever
bravesfan
RunDMC doesn’t do the best job putting his thought to words here (although he normally does), but I 100% agreed. The entire Mike Soroka injury debacle has been handled very poorly by upper Mgmt and has been very conflicting up until now. This looks very poor on them in my opinion. It means either A.) Mgmt wanted Soroka to rush back (likely contributing to the major setback). Or B.) Mgmt at no point either knew or wanted to know Soroka’s health status. Either way, it’s a bad look on them. The flip flop on how well or not well he was progressing, suggest they simply had no idea and didn’t invest the time or resources they should have to ensure a young potential superstar came back healthy
RunDMC
lol — The site doesn’t allow GIFs and/or emojis, my point would be more obvious.
1984wasntamanual
I don’t know, I don’t always agree with Run, but I found his post easy enough to understand and do actually agree with him on this point. If your manager thinks a player is done for the season to the point of commenting on it, there was probably a reason for it and with what we know, it was probably a valid comment on his part.
Now, I’m not sure how big of a deal this is or if anyone will even remember it, but I think it’s appropriate to point out the different messages that were put out there regarding Soroka and his recovery/absence in light of what we know and what has transpired.
SonnySteele
Maybe Braves management took Rob Dibble’s advice. (You may remember in 2010 when Dibble said this about Strasburg on a Nats broadcast: “Suck it up, kid. This is your profession. You chose to be a baseball player. You can’t have the cavalry come in and save your butt every time you feel a little stiff shoulder, sore elbow.” Strasburg ended up needing Tommy John surgery. And Dibble was fired.)
Appalachian_Outlaw
AA and the Braves brass 100% knew Sororka was having issues prior to this. Snitker wouldn’t have said what he did if that wasn’t already known.
I find it hard to believe a healthy person tears an Achilles walking to a dugout. However, if he already had issues, I can see it being reinjured.
AA was probably just trying to garner more leverage in trade negotiations by hiding Sororka’s status, trying to bluff other teams when dealing for pitching.
RunDMC
@AppOutlaw – I’m not going that far on AA. I can’t imagine any GM would want to burn bridges by downplaying a serious injury to boost trade stock that may inevitably come to light in an industry that doesn’t sleep and doesn’t forget.
Appalachian_Outlaw
Oh I wasn’t talking in terms of dealing Sororka.
I meant more like: “Well, we have Sororka potentially coming back, so we don’t really want to deal Pache for (insert pitcher), but we’d be open to discussing (insert lesser name)” type of hiding.
SonnySteele
That’s a good point, Appalachian.
1984wasntamanual
This really isn’t super surprising that he’s still having issues with this, it didn’t seem like it was recovering as expected, but to completely re-tear it just walking was not expected.
BravesNomad
I just hope the kid recovers, at this point it’s more about being able to walk for the rest of his life versus throwing a baseball competitively. I do hope though he’s able to come back from it and be the pitcher we all hope he can be.

I did a little googling, here’s what I found…
• 80% of people who have surgery to repair a torn achilles report a 100% recovery, ie a complete return to their previous lifestyle. I could not find if this is higher or lower for pro athletes.
• About 5% of people suffer a second tear; according to everything I read, recovery rates for a second surgery are almost identical to first surgery rates..
Certainly hoping Soroka can, at the minimum, have a good, healthy life and enjoy his family, etc. A real bonus would be if the Braves got their All-Star calibre pitcher back! I was actually surprised to see that the rate of recovery for a second surgery is good. Worth hoping for the best.

“You did good research because it supports my preconception”
Dusty, researching the recovery rates for your average person isn’t the same as recovery rates for athletes. Maybe you should look into doing some of your own research instead of calling out commenters that disagree with you.
You can argue that NFL and NBA are different than MLB, but here are a couple quotes from an article that looked into injuries in those sports. I would also expect slightly better results for modern medicine than some of these due to how long ago some of the surgeries took place, but this offers a little context on the effects of these injuries on professional athletes.
NFL – “In this cohort, only 68% of athletes were able to return to the sport, and those that did generally returned at a lower level of efficacy compared with preinjury.”
Some of these injuries are old, I’m sure surgery has gotten better since, so I’d expect better results than these and it also doesn’t include Durant, but for some context about NBA
NBA – “Achilles ruptures have been assessed in other sports, as well. Amin et al assessed 18 players from the National Basketball Association (NBA) who had Achilles ruptures over a 23-year period (1988-2011).10 The injuries had a profound negative impact on the athletes, as 39% were unable to return to competition, and those who did return had a significant decrease in both playing time and performance. Further data suggest Achilles tendon repair is associated with the lowest RTP rates among NBA players of any orthopedic surgical procedure.11”

Isn’t that every pitcher who has ever left the braves organization over the last 5 seasons. Alex Wood, Gausman, Lucas Sims, Mike Minor, Allard I can keep going but it’s depressing how bad this Braves organization has been at developing pitchers. They had stockpiled tons of young top notch pitching with Kyle wright at the top and maybe 1-2 of all of them have panned out so far with the rest all having control/walk issues and giving up home run in 0-2 counts speaks to organizational philosophies issues.
TradeAcuna
Maybe it is best to just pretend the season does not exist. Hopefully, by next season, the team is overhauled including management.
Brad Scott
Surgery doesn’t repair an injured Achilles tendon nearly as well as letting it heal naturally. Even the most severe Achilles rupture fully heals in about six months without surgery if rehabbed correctly, and the healing is far superior to the results surgery provides. Soroka shouldn’t have more surgery on his Achilles. He should let it heal on its own.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
I found this when I googled:
“Non-surgical Treatment
The treatment includes casting the foot with your toes pointed down. You can also opt for recasting. Ever week, a new cast will be applied and this will gradually decrease the amount of flexion that points down in your ankle, enabling your Achilles tendon to heal while increase the stretch in your tendon gradually. While you may appreciate the value of non-invasive procedures, you need to know that the recovery rates from this treatment option are not very encouraging. The non-operative care has demonstrated a re-rupturing rata from 10% to 30% as compared to the 3% to 5% re-rupturing rate in surgical procedures.”

At the end of the day, the Braves organization is jumping with joy behind the scenes. They will be sellers and they can replenish the farm system which any intelligent person will tell you is all they care about. Winning at the MLB level is nothing for them.
I say trade everybody other than Anderson. Too bad fake superstar Acuna is signed to a friendly contract. He will surely be the most overrated player in the sports history.
Appalachian_Outlaw
I wish we could trade fans. Anyone who believes Acuna is overrated should be dealt into Pirates fandom.
Cosmo2
Yea, I mean he’s only on pace for a 6 WAR season with a 157 OPS+, but I guess you can’t please everyone.
Shoechewer
Cut and Paste. But mostly just cut.

Is it just me or does this speak to a potential bigger issue with the whole Braves Organization??? The Sh** has hit the fan this season on how mismanaged this whole organization has been run from top to bottom. Everyone involved is at fault and it’s time Liberty sales the team and new ownership fires everyone within the system and hires new FO execs, minor league instructors and coaches, advisors, medical staff as this shouldn’t have happened if the surgery was done correctly the first time. Just “walking out of the clubhouse” should never rupture your achilles. This will be his 3rd surgery if you count the “exploratory surgery a couple months back. When snit said he was done for the season and than AA told him to walk that back something seemed off. I’m tired of this Organization always putting cost savings ahead of performance. Atlanta and it’s huge fan base deserve better. I want Freddie to be extended but if he is smart he will get out while he can as this Organization is a dumpster fire and I don’t see any other for than for Liberty to sale the team and for new owners to lean house.
Cosmo2
Seems like an overreaction to me
russ5tide
How so? 1 win away from a World Series in a 60 game season and what has this Organization done correctly? There have bee. Pitching issues for 3 years now and signs of what’s happening this season possibly coming. Do we as fans just lower our expectations to the bottom ¼ of the league or should we expect the best from an organization like the Braves?
Cosmo2
A lot of teams have the same complaints about not winning big recently. That’s how it goes, you can’t be on top all the time. Fire the manager? Sure. Make some trades, sure. Sell the team? Overreaction.
russ5tide
Liberty media has held back this Organization for years and everybody knows it. The problems start at the top. Chipper Jones even came out and called Liberty and “absentee owner” which they are. They care only about profits and could care less about winning. Why own a professional sports team if winning isn’t your main goal??? Now that’s an overreaction?
48-team MLB
“You can’t be on top all the time.”
The Atlanta Braves have only been on top once in 55 years…even though they’ve made 22 postseason appearances.
Cosmo2
The Braves have had more success in that time than most teams. Does half the league need new owners? It’s beyond hyperbolic.
russ5tide
Yes but are you as a fan happy with just winning the division so many years in a row with only 1 World Series and should ownership be happy with just winning the division or should they strive to win it all?? Why own a sports team if your not trying to win it all every year
RunDMC
People really overreacting to “absentee owner” comment. They are – they’re a corporation based in CO. Would you really feel better if you saw John C. Malone in an oversized Braves hat at a home game in a crisp-pressed Brooks Brothers buttondown with his sleeves rolled up trying to look like Joe Everyman? I don’t want an owner like Arthur Blank, Mark Cuban, Steve Ballmer on the sidelines patting my guys on the butt or in the huddle. Give me the money, leave me alone and let me do the job you hired me to do. Isn’t that what every employee wants in a workplace? To not be micromanaged? 2020 payroll was a record (and of course it was scaled back after record losses…though they could still spend on acquisitions). Hate the fact that Braves have corporate owners? Blame Ted Turner, who sold it in the Time Warner deal, that signed a terrible TV contract, then selling it off to Liberty, another corporation.
russ5tide
Nobody is asking for an owner to stand and dance on top of the dugout with the mascot or anything. But Liberty isn’t sufficiently “giving them their money”. They are def leaving them alone unless it’s to tell the FO to make cuts. Also, what good is blaming Ted Turner going to do. It may be his fault for the bad sell. But doesn’t mean Liberty and MLB can’t be responsible and see that this Organization would be much better off if they aren’t handicapped by it’s ownership style. Don’t get me wrong. This team has so many more issues than just the FO/ownership problems. But with the size of Atlanta, the huge fan base and the consistent profits. The Braves organization deserves to be one of the higher market teams in all of baseball. Why expect less when we know how much potential this Organization really has if they truly go all-in?
RunDMC
What dollar amount are you expecting for them to be “giving them their money”? Record amount in 2020 and, as now, about a 10% decrease after record losses from no 2020 attendance (though they’ve stated they have held onto some for some in-season spending in 2021, so by the end of the season, most likely that 10% will shrink, unless they decide to sell-off). Don’t misread me, I blame AA for the moves he didn’t make, but it’s too easy to blame an absentee father — nay — owner for not doing enough.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
@Russ. I can only pray Liberty Media sells the team. Chipper just came out recently and let Braves fans know the truth about Liberty Media. Which is basically they only care about making money. I would love the team sold to a private owner that actually cares about winning.
48-team MLB
I heard that Tom Glavine was part of a group that tried to buy the Marlins. That obviously fell through but I wonder if that same group would try to buy the Braves.
SonnySteele
FYI: The Cubs never reached the World Series while the Tribune publishing company owned the team. Braves corporate ownership likely operates in much the same way. If the team is profitable, all is well. No matter how many playoff opportunities are lost.
BravesNutter01
Sad to say Soroka’s career is likely finished. The idea that he can continue performing at an elite level given a third surgery is all but impossible.
samthebravesfan
They need to use him as a long reliever or something if he ever recovers. We may have seen the best he’ll ever do.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
When he first suffered the torn Achilles heel. I said he would be done out the entire year.
acmeants
So sorry thais has happened to Soroka. They obviously need to go shopping before the trade deadline and get a controllable arm. There’s plenty of trade bait, namely Kyle Wright. Toussaint, Camargo, Pache, Luke Jackson, even Muller and Newcomb.
48-team MLB
Only Minnesota and Oakland even come close to Atlanta this century in terms of most postseason appearances without a single World Series appearance. It’s getting old.
IjustloveBaseball
Given it’s not his arm, I don’t see as much doom and gloom as a lot of these comments seem to be sharing.
It’s one of those injuries that must be 100% before being pushed in any way though; I get the feeling he rushed things in order to make it back this season — understandably so; he wants to compete.
acmeants
Hate to say it, but the Braves need to terminate all the village idiots who keep doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. And when they do that, also send the village idiot in the broadcast booth packing. He keeps sending all the wrong signals into the universe and jinxing the team.
48-team MLB
The Braves have 12 postseason appearances this century and no World Series appearances…and if you take away the fake 2020 season then they only have one postseason series win in 11 postseason appearances (2001 NLDS). I know you can’t win the World Series every year but I don’t think it would have been unrealistic to win a couple titles…let’s say 2003 and 2019.
